Eponine had been helping her parents all day with the house chores. She did feel bad for Cosette I mean her mother was paying for her to live here. Still she did try to be nice to Cosette. Cosette was beautiful even though she wore rags for clothes. Well they were more of hand me downs. Eponine looked over at Cosette. "Cosette would you like to go for a quick walk maybe see Marius and Enjorlas?" she asked. Eponine was sick of being in the house all and having to pick pocket. She wished for once in her life that she could do the right thing.

Cosette had just returned from the woods with a pale of water in her grip. She used to be so scared of the woods, but, in recent years, she found it rather comforting. It was a place that Madame wouldn't go looking for her in. She could hide in there all she wanted, and no one would come looking for her. When she had at last set the bucket down where it should be, she heard Eponine ask her if she wanted to go for a walk with Marius and Enjorlas. She smiled, and said, "Do you think your mother would allow you to be seen with the sights of me?" It wasn't as if she was oblivious to the fact that she looked like a disaster compared to Eponine.

"Actually I was going to let you borrow one of my dresses. I saw the way that you were looking a Enjorlas. You like him don't you? Besides my mother doesn't have to know every little thing that I do. It's my father we need to watch out for. Besides all I will have to do is put a tiny tear in the dress and you will be able to keep it. I'll just sew it after we are out of sight. You know by now Cosette that I am not as heartless as my parents are. I use to be when I was younger but now I see the world differently. Besides they are too busy trying to pick pocket people." Eponine explained. She was frustrated that Cosette thought that she would let Cosette go out looking like a train wreck. As long as she did not get caught by her parents everything would be okay. She really wanted to see Marius and wanted Cosette to have at least some happiness in her life.

Cosette couldn't help but smile when Eponine asked her if she liked Enjorlas. "It's not as if he even knows I exist. As far as he's aware, your family has this random blonde maid." She supposed that that was, in some aspects, what was going on. She worked for them, yes, but, with every piece of money that her mother sent to pay for her, it just equaled a new dress for Eponine... or shoes... or hats. Even when she was sick last year with the flu, none of it had gone to her Cosette sighed, and said, "'s not like I'm afraid of what I look like. I've gotten quite good at making old clothes seem presentable." It was true. The dress she was wearing currently, no one would have known it was a light blue before she had worked on it.

"But he won't see you anymore as this random blonde maid who lives with us. Listen I probably will bring something to eat. Mom thinks that I'm out telling you to get firewood for the fire place. She doesn't know that it is already stacked up in the woods or at least it will be. Come on lets go. I'll grab you something and if she sees you going with me I will tell her that I need to go get a new dress and you are just trying it on for me because I don't feel like it. She knows that we are basically the same weight and size. Come on Cosette please?" Eponine said. She really wanted to get going before her parents needed her again at night.

Cosette smiled slightly, and said, "All right. I'll come." She wasn't sure why she was agreeing to that. It'd probably mean that she'd have to carry double the firewood tonight because of this. Sure, she didn't like doing more runs than necessary, but she didn't necessarily want to overwork herself because she slacked off during the day.

As Eponine walked through the kitchen she saw her mother bringing out some food. At least it was food but all of the food was disgusting to eat. Still she did not want to starve but knew if Cosette was spotted it could ruin the afternoon. Did her mom even see her walking through the kitchen? She signaled to Cosette to go around so that her mother wouldn't see her. Eponine started to walk out the door. Her parents were busy so it really didn't matter.

Madame Thenardier walked into the kitchen and grabbed a tray of food. Customers were coming earlier and earlier these days, and he didn't really like it. And, as more and more people showed up, it seemed as if that brat, Collette or Locette... whatever her name was, got lazier and lazier. "Is that worthless child back from the woods yet?"

Cosette was just to walk around Eponine's mother when she heard her yelling for her. Sighing, she walked in, and said, "The water's just where you want it." That was all she felt she had manners to say at the moment. She was so close to being able to get out of there for once.

Eponine turned back around to see her mom mad at Cosette. She walked back inside and said, "Mom, I need to go get a new dress this one has a huge tear in it and I really do not want to try on all of those awful dresses. That is Cosette's job and I want for her to have to try the dresses on so that I can pick out the one that I like. Please Mom. She will still do her chores and its just one more chore for her." Eponine said. She hoped that her mom would let her and Cosette go but at the same time did not hurt Cosette's feelings. She just wanted her mom to let her leave with Cosette.

Madame Thenardier sighed, and said, "She still has to mop the floors and bring the firewood for the night in. It does look like rain, after all. I want that wood in before the rain comes." She sighed. This child was always getting the sympathy of her daughter. How could she have raised her so horribly that she was actually feeling sorry for a girl who's mother had to pay for her even to eat? "You know, if you're not careful, someone might think you're starting to pity the help."

"I promise you that I am not. Would you want me to be running around wearing a torn dress like this one does all the time?" she asked as she gestured to Cosette. "Please this dress is already torn don't you happen to have another one somewhere in this house?" she asked. "I'm going to go and help Cosette with getting the firewood mother I'm freezing." she said hurrying off. It was true that she was pitying Cosette but if it was reversed she was almost positive that Cosette would have done the same for her.
