Eyes: Gerald Pine views his rather dreary world from a pair of hazel colored eyes which seem almost to glow a faded shade of olive green around the golden brown color which collects in random spikes coming from the pupil. Over the last year and a half as he continues an alcohol-induced downward spiral, the whites in his eyes are almost always shown with slight bloodshots, usually taking the form of a couple of jagged red lines coming from his eye sockets. Many times, there are speckles of rheum collected around the inner corners, never wiped away from when he wakes up. Even on occasion, these specks are found matted within his eyelashes. He sports slight crow’s feet wrinkles along the outside of his eyes, as well as a couple large, but only slightly darkened bags beneath his lower eyelids. This only adds to his rather slovenly appearance.

Face: Gerald’s face holds a thick five o’clock shadow, as he will often go multiple days without shaving his face in the winter. What was formerly a handsome rugged face, nearly stone-chiseled to perfection in his teenage youth, has since become slightly more airy. Though his face is not fat, it has lost its firmed form, as his cheek bones have been smoothed out, and a small ridge beneath his chin has begun to form. His forehead shows slight furrowed wrinkles in his brow, dug in during long summer days of working. His nose is a typical slender nose, which does not deter one way or another from the rest of his face. Along the sides of his head, usually partially covered by a thick mess of curly hair hides a pair of small ears, which seem to stay naturally pinned closely to his head, that is to say, they do not stick out like some people’s might.

Hair: Gerald’s hair is best described as a thick moppy auburn-colored mess. He tends to keep his hair rather shaggy, especially during winter months when it gets freezing cold. The extra hair keeps him warm as less heat is lost through his mess. It’s a medium length, kept off of his shoulders, though it does curl and hide a lot of the back of his neck, ears, and some of his forehead. During the spring and summer months however, Gerald does make an attempt to keep it short and trimmed so the hair doesn’t hinder his work.

Body: Gerald is of average height and average build, with a noticeable beer belly beginning to form around his midsection. His biceps and thighs support moderately strong muscles, thanks mostly to his line of work in the construction business. His hands are rather large and firm, slightly calloused from years of working with his hands. The rest of his body is somewhat average, as he has no abnormal features. His day wear often means going about wearing flannel shirts and jeans. Often he’ll walk in work boots and thick socks, even around the house. He does make an exception during hockey night, where he dons an Edmonton Oilers jersey, usually of past stars gone by, like Gretzky or Messier. He is however very strict about the gear, wearing home jerseys for home games, away jerseys for away games.

Gerald Pine is arguably a glorified slacker. Although when he does work he works hard, he has made no attempts toward much advancement in his role of construction worker, as he remains satisfied simply being told where to work. He is a man who seems to be between content and complacent about his mundane life. So much so that he even took his divorce in stride. Over the last year and a half, since the divorce, Gerald has been in a consistently mundane existence. After dinner, he often drinks himself to a stupor before beginning his nightly routine of gaming during the winter months. In the real world, his attitude towards the world balances between nonchalant and aloof. The only exceptions is during hockey games and when physically provoked. It is through gaming which Gerald displays his stronger range of emotions, being able to express himself through his character as an extension of himself.

_________BIOGRAPHY ▪▫

Born Stephen Gerald Pine on June 23, 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, He quickly learned to go by the name Gerald, or Gerry, so not to be confused with his father, Stephen James Pine. As a child, Gerry was the typical average Canadian. He loved playing hockey, and was decent in it, playing all the way through his high school days. He also enjoyed going with his family on camping trips in the summer into the wilderness of his parent’s home province of Alberta. In school, he made above average grades, B’s mostly. However he didn’t have the drive or the desire to push himself in school.

At the age of 14, his family decided to move back to their home province, as his father got a job with a bank in Calgary. He attended high school there, getting a degree. During his Senior year, he met a woman named Jamie Carr, a sophomore at the time. They began a relationship that year and continued it through her final two years of high school. The summer following her graduation, they were married on July 12, 2014. She was getting ready to go to college at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton and he was currently at a dead-end job at a local pizzeria. Gerry would eventually follow her to Edmonton, gaining a job in construction. They settled on a home in the local suburb of Spruce Grove, where they quickly made relatively easy friendships with their new neighbors. His steady job in construction was only available during the spring and summer, so during the winter he began to assist in snow plowing.

Midway through Jamie’s sophomore year, Gerry found out that his wife was pregnant. She left school after that semester to give birth to their son on August 3, 2016, whom they named Dennis James Pine. The mother would stay home during the next three years to nurse the child, while Gerry continued to work to support them. They began to settle into a nice routine, where Gerry would come home after a long day, and be with the family. Jamie would often find herself online with several different sites while she nursed their son. Gerry during the winter would go watch the hockey game at a local pub with a collection of like-minded gents, and occasionally he would surprise his woman with a night out just the two of them. It was indeed an nice routine somewhat regular existence, one which Gerry settled into happily.

When Dennis was old enough to go to nursery school, Jamie decided to go back to school. Gerry now found himself in an unusual position of being home alone during the winter days without anything to do. He began to seek out a hobby. After a few failed attempts at finding hobbies, Gerry decided to try a game which his wife Jamie played, a World of Warcraft expansion which combined the world with My Little Pony characters, entitled, Ponyvaganza. Though he found the concept of playing as a fancy child-friendly horse dumb, he was entranced by the immense world of the MMORPG.

The first year of gaming, he experimented with several RPG’s, trying to find one which suited his interest. Through a few months of playing with his wife’s game and computer, he learned the basics and eventually had developed a solid character. That first winter was like his reawakening to a new world, a new side of himself, one where he felt freer than he ever had. Midway through the winter, his hockey buddies were the first to notice the change in him, as they began noticing him missing some of the Oilers games, though they didn’t know it was in favor of gaming. That spring, as he continued his regular construction job, at night he would immerse himself in games. He bounced around to several gaming sites, trying to find one which really captivated him. His quest continued through the summer, which found his wife Jamie noticing the change. He was less affectionate toward her, and seemed to begin to ignore the family in favor of his current gaming obsession.

The pattern would continue through the next year as he began to get sloppy at his morning snowplowing job in the winter. He found himself habitually late to the job, which his employers began to warn him about. However, an abnormally heavy snow season kept him in work through to the spring. During the spring and summer of that year, a number of things began to occur. His wife began having an affair with a classmate, feeling neglected by Gerry’s new obsession. From that, their child, Dennis began acting out in school. Gerry began taking shortcuts, showing up late and intentionally not taking a couple jobs to afford him more time for games, creating more strain on their budget. The tension from it all started escalating into fight between he and his wife, causing him to seek the gaming worlds more and more for solace.

At the end of her final semester of college, Jamie had made up her mind to getting the divorce, presenting him with papers a month after her graduation. The process of finalizing took a while. They were ordered to a separation beforehand, which proved beneficial for Jamie, as she continued her romance with her classmate. Meanwhile, Gerry began a downward spiral, escaping more and more into the various RPG worlds, aided by various beers, ales, and whiskeys. By the time six months had passed for the separation period, he was a wreck. Jamie won full custody of their child and moved in with her classmate, while Gerry was left the house and his belongings. He now had no other obligations except work to get between his preferred way of life, the gaming worlds, where he could recreate himself with no consequences or fuss about his shattered reality.

As the year 2022 passed, Gerry found his offline life somewhat collapsing around him. The past winter, he had lost his winter snow plowing job thanks to his drunken stupors no longer being permissible to drive in the mornings. He appeared before his hockey friends as lethargic, to say the least. He was no longer the same Gerry he once was, and now all of his free time was spent thinking about the next time he could play. After growing bored of the game he was playing, he began to seek out another. It was then he saw the buzz about a serious virtual reality RPG, Sword Art Online. Knowing winter was coming, he knew he would have to find another game. So he took the shot, buying up the equipment and applying for playing the beta trial.

Face: With basic appearances in the Beta of SAO somewhat lacking, Gerry’s character, Enigma, begins as he begins most starter humanized role playing game characters, by getting as close to his former high school self as possible, before adjusting to how he wants it. Through the development, he starts with the face, selecting the eyes first. The end result is a pair of dazzling brown eyes which give off a faint glint of light reflecting off them. They are adjusted slightly, shrinking them closer to his natural eyes’ size. They are also given a small upward slant adjustment toward the nose. His nose is made slightly wider than his natural nose, and nostrils are rounded downward. The point of the nose is rounded a bit, so not to be given too sharp of an angle. He keeps the standard stone-cut chin and jawline, but removes the facial hair. He makes small adjustments to smooth out the edges to have a clean-cut look. The ears remain the default style, though given a small adjustment to bring them closer to the head. For his eyebrows, Gerry chooses a fading style, bushy near the middle of the brow, which gently fades as it curves around the eye. He gives the eyebrows a dark brown tint, making sure to keep a bit of color rather than letting them become all black.

Hair: Quite possibly the most extensive of default settings lies in the player’s hair selections. Gerry’s final selection of his character’s hair is a slice of life from his youth, as he picks a style reminiscent of the scene look of the 2008-2913 era. His hair dangles around ear-length in a thick mess of straightened black hair, with individual streaks of hair sprouting from midway between the dome and hairline in the front. Its bangs are highlighted in alternating patches of red and blue.

Body: Gerry created his character, Enigma to be exactly 195 centimeters (about 6 foot, 4 and a half inches) tall. The final weight for his character was made to be 80 kilos (about 176 pounds). For his beginning character, Gerry gave his upper body a plain dark blue t-shirt, with a denim jacket, unbuttoned to allow the shirt to be seen. For pants, he decided on a pair of regular dark blue denim jeans, for which he altered the color a bit to give it what he considered a proper faded look. Lastly, he placed a pair of black combat boots on his feet, unaltered, as the cuff of his pant legs hid the tops.
