I've always been interested in this debate and really, I'm surprised that this hasn't really come up as a thread yet. Just give your side and we'll see where it takes us.

Here's what I think, people think about the different types of cars.
At least in this counrty that is. (South Africa)
American car cars powerfull, but are no good at cornering.
Japanese cars are high tech and efficent, and thus at the pinnicle of what a car should be.
European cars, are balanced, and if from germany - relaiable, Italy - tempremental, France more looks than go.
Those are just generalisations of course. But if you where to look at the counrty where a car was designed then you can pick up interesting things. For instance, America is wide and open, so designing a 3 cylinder compact car, doesn't make much sence. Where as building a box, sticking in a V8 does.
What seems to be interesting is that American companies outside of america design and sell almost completly different cars to europe and africa. Ever heard of the Ford Bantam?
Where as the other forien companies inside the us seem to sell cars that they would sell in thier home country.

Personally alot of the cars I like happen to be Japanese.
So I guese I like Japanese cars, but if presented with a choice between a new 2005 Daihatsu Cherade or 1969 Plymoth Barracuda. I would take the Cuda... whee
but then again thats a obvious choice.

I am an import fan, although i own a European car which i love, and i have always had a liking for Muscle cars, so im on a 35/35/30
35= Imports, 35= European, 30=Amercian

Personally, I prefer to work with Japanese cars since that's what I've been around for most of the time. My dad was a dragster junkie way back in the days, but he's since sold off his '69 Camaro for a fishing boat so I got to pick which way to go for as far as tuning goes.
I really like that Import vs. Domestic image Toker posted though. As mad as it might make some people, it's so true blaugh

I do like Muscle but I live in england thus it's impratical and any jap import's are dear to buy, tune, insure so Bikes are the only way to go fast here altough I plan to buid a Rod In latter years. Maybe a pro street car But at the moment I'll stick to my sleeper Mini It I'll shock some of the fast car owners

Well straight from the door I have to say I am all for American. In saying that, don't misunderstand me. I love japanese cars, but they try to do things that are important to people in japan. I love having a car that handles really well. My tiburon does that stock. However I would give it up in a heart beat for a non-turn muscle beast. And it's funny how everyone beleives japanese cars handle and american cars have power. Have any of you guys ever seen a Corvette? Sure they are expencive, but thats an american car that will stick behind an intergra/RSX in a turn then smoke it on the straight. Sure the price difference if huge, it does however show american cars have what it takes. And who needs handling when you have a 8.1L V-10? You can have it biggrin

Hmmm, I think an Integra vs. a Corvette would be a slight mismatch if you ask me sweatdrop
Now if we have an Evo going against the Vette, than I'd say it'd be more fair, albeit the 'vette would still probably eat the Evo alive.... xp

Not many cars handle aswell as an integra/RSX from the showroom. But you can compare anything you wish, EVO, Supra, Lexus, dare I say NSX. I would still have my money on the vette.

You just can't ******** with real muscle. You don't see streetable imports in the 8s (Supras aside?) , or import-powered rails in the 4s. Really, about anything you can do to a 4 banger to make it fast (and they can be made fast!), you can do to a good ole pushrod V8, not to mention a DOHC mod motor, and make it even faster.

Super Panda: Many American cars are very good at cornering, have you ever seen a Corvette take a corner? There are several Japanese made cars that suck at cornering too, I don't think it's fair to say that just because it was made in a certain country that it will perform a certain way. Yes, companies from the same countries do have alot of similarities, but they all have their differences. Take Chevrolet and Ford for example.
Also, not all parts of America is wide open... not even most parts, really... You definitely don't want to get stuck around Chicago during rush hour... The average speeds at that time are between 1 and 6 or 7 mph... It may not make sense to you for us to make a 3 cylinder compact car, but we did it anyway.
Yes, I do seem to notice that American companies design and sell different cars out of America... it makes sense, it's good for business, and in most circumstances those vehicles are actually manufactured in those countries.

Camero_guy, you bring up a lot of good points. Though I think the thing that really bothers Japanese tuners in particular is the fact that a lot of American drivers have the mentality that power will win you everything. I'm not trying to pick on anyone in the guild, but that's just the major difference I see here and in Japan.
I know a lot of guys in Japan who would prefer to tune a Nissan March (itty bitty 1.5L compact with electronic AWD) over an R32 Skyline just because it suited their needs better.
Once, I went to Mt. Rokko in Kobe to see who was coming out. While I was there, I saw a guy in a Nismo March dust an R32. And believe me, it wasn't because the R32 was going slow. I bet if a Camaro or a Vette went up there and raced against that same guy, they'd get spanked too.

How you mod a car all depends on what you're going to be using it for. Most people these days can't seem to grasp that concept. It all depends on how modded those cars are. Most people still think that American cars can't handle worth s**t but they really haven't seen what the modern cars can do. If I built a Camaro or Corvette especially for handling, it could probably keep up or pass that guy. Would I? No, I don't have a use for extreme handling like that around here. What I'm actually doing for around here is building a fast street car. I don't plan on participating in any auto-x races, mountain races or anything like that with my car. The extent of my racing is redlight take-off's, the occasional line-em up in the industrial park, and a few times at the local drag track. I'll add stability things to my car for daily driving but not for racing.
