So I'm terrible at DIY stuff, and basically anything that requires a drill. But even in my ineptitude I managed to build a ring flash out of nothing more than one of those metal heat lamp shade thingies, a heater coupling thingy, and some white paper.

It's pretty ghetto and doesn't give quite the effect of a professional piece of equipment, but for $28 vs. $400+ I can't complain.

gaia_angelleft I've heard of a couple DIY versions of creating your own artificial lights. I think it came out great! Do you have a studio you used to take the picture, or is it just a dark room off-hand ready to be used?

Either way, keep at it. I suggest trying having multiple makeshift lights so you have overlaying shadows from various angles. However, the head-on approach you used for this photograph seems most appropriate.

Just another recommendation (word of mouth and off the top of my head, haven't tried) would be to use a filter such as wire metal mesh over the light, satin, or light gels. Please post more pics soon! I want to see more! :]
