Warning: dark themes. Murderers, serial killers, assassins, protectors, defenders, humans, animals, machines...what do they all have in common? When push comes to shove, they can and will kill you. Even a cornered mouse will kill a cat. What changes things are instincts. Some like to kill, others live to not die. And in a world as immoral as ours...is it truly possible for someone to not be responsible for the deaths of those around them? What if they truly had no choice? Because that is the case of Hitonaka Shin. Call it bad luck if you will, but this boy has been forced into unfair circumstances since a child. For some reason, those around him always want to kill him. And despite the most careful of choices, he always ends up with a bloodied weapon in his hands. The police know him well as well as other certain establishments. They've examined the boy many times and determined that his personality is not fitting for one who habitually kills. Each of his cases, despite how numerous, were all acts of self-defense. So he was relocated, so often he is more of a traveler than an orphan. So, finally, the forces of law decided to bring in some outside help. This help came in the form of a young exorcist. And that, is where things got very interesting. This...is the true beginning. You have one year to find to true cause behind Hitonaka's mysterious problem lest you become the next victim. The chill of winter hugged against him like an old friend, whispering news of snow and cold feet for weeks to come and nipping at his numb nose. Kail had never really liked the cold; he didn't hate it, but he rubbed his arms and the jacket that seemed a tad too thin for the air around him as he marched into the police station and tried to stamp what slush and ice he could off of his shoes before he walked towards the waiting secretary.
"They'll see you by room 113, down past the offices and on the hall to the left. You can't miss it."
It was impossible to miss, especially thanks to the large man with a walrus-mustache and matching gut standing by the door. "Mr ... Gargoyle?" the cop asked, voice deep but strong.
"Just call me Kail," the younger and far fitter man replied, keeping his gloves on, even if he wanted to remove the protective leather to rub his hands together. "Is he in there?"
"Yeah. Shin Hitonaka. I'm sure you read over everything we sent you, so let me get to the facts. He's a good kid, facts aside. We're hoping you can--"
Kail didn't need to hear anymore. He smoothly stepped around the man, and let himself inside first. Best to hear it from the horse's mouth and get into the thick of things.

Shin was sitting at the table, staring at an untouched plate of food. It had been only yesterday when he found himself fighting his way out of a crowd. He had been grocery shopping when, the next thing he knew, he was on the run, using whatever he could to survive. And survive he did, at the life of every man, mother and child that was in the place. Covered in blood, he had locked himself in the manager's office and curled up until the police finally showed.
And now, here he was. The chief gave him food to eat and some tea for his nerves, but to no avail. He felt...empty. Sick. Unclean. Dangerous. He wanted to die. If he...if he had to kill again...if he had to find himself covered in blood once more...no... He couldn't take it. He just...
Another wave of nausea hit him and he could no longer stand to look at the food. In a fit of despair, he flung the plate across the room, smashing it against the wall. He laid his face down upon the table, arms shielding him from the light, but the sounds were still in his head, calling for his blood and screaming in pain as they were felled.
Even the entrance of someone new didn't disturb his torment state of mind.

Kail looked from the remains of what had once been a plate of food, over to the curled up form of who could only be one person: Shin. The exorcist signed, pulling off his coat as he walked towards the table, and hanging it over the back of the available chair opposite of the young man. His silver cross swung a bit now that it was free, before Kail let himself sit down.
He didn't speak. First, he had to determine whether the odd phenomena truly were the work of a demonic possession. So, Kail reached behind his neck, and undid the small clasp on the chain of his necklace. The silver on both necklace and chain was holy, and made to protect from outside influence. Like supernatural earplugs, once the necklace was off ... suddenly, the smell of salty iron ... blood, was thick in the room. Like the place was coated in blood, and the florescent lighting seemed to dim a few notches.
Sighing, Kail put his necklace back on, fingering his cross a few moments. The police report was fresh in his mind, along with the news-feed he'd glimpsed before arrival. Something had a hold of the kid, that was for sure. Something strong.
"Well, this is annoying ..." It was too strong to be a simple ghost. Likely ... this was a demon. Not an imp, a full-blooded demon warrior. What class, species, or anything else ... Kail had no clue. Which was definitely frustrating and dangerous. "Shin Hitonaka," Kail said formally, standing and putting his coat back on. There was no telling how soon normal people might be affected. And if one of the police officers in the precinct was weak-willed ... things could get complected in as little as a half hour. Or less. "I'm Kail, an exorcist of the Holy Monumental Church. If you don't mind, you'd best be coming with me."
He didn't have time or want for small talk. He expected results.

Shin flinched as he heard his name called by an unfamiliar voice. Looking up, he saw a strange sight. He looked like a priest, but...more aggressive. He felt a title whipsered in his ear, an echo from something he heard while being brought in. "...e...xor-cist..." A lot of thoughts went through his mind as to why such a person was introduced to him.
"Nn...if...you're here to end me...the nearby alley is fine. I don't...need any special treatment." His eyes were the one tired of existing, tired of hurting others over things he did not understand. But he did understand it only happened with him. Just him. And it happened without fail every time. "If my...existence is a pox upon this world, then please...don't let me plague it any further. I don't...want to hurt them anymore..."

Kail saw a well of despair in the other's eyes. A pain too deep form him to possibly see the bottom, and a turmoil that had clearly eaten up this boy (not much younger than himself). He did not bother correcting Shin's assumption, it would be a waste of time and a dangerous thing to do. So Kail just grunted deep in his throat, grabbing the younger male by the back of his shirt, and proceeding to drag Shin along towards the exit door.
"I can take care of it," he said curtly to the officer outside, shoes smacking against the tile flooring. Otherwise, Kail was as silent as executioner as he pulled/dragged Shin out of the precinct ... and to his motorcycle. The two-wheel vehicle was far easier for maneuvering around other cars if need be, even if things were trickier in winter weather.
Letting go of the possessed boy, Kail grabbed his own helmet, and tossed one Shin's way. "Put it on." It would be simple to just kill Shin, but then the demon would just as easily move on to another nearby host. Right now, Kail was going to get Shin away from town, and away from anyone who might be easily-influenced into ... Well, attacking Shin. To a safe house in the woods, a cabin. Not the most comfortable of places, but it would be safe.

Shin didn't resist as he was grabbed and dragged out of the police station. He had already seen some of the men in the station getting the fidgety. He'd been in the interrogation room for his own personal protection from the other cops. The motorcycle was a new one, though. He almost didn't catch the helmet as it was thrown at him. "...okay." He put it on, remembering faintly from one of his many rushed escapes out of there. He then climbed on behind Kail.

Once they were both securely in place on the vehicle, Kail started up the engine and soon took off, mindful of ice and snow on the road. But it was not a short ride. After a half hour, Kail turned off of the main road and onto a side road, off onto a curling path that turned and twisted through a forest, until turning into a dirt road that bumped and shook the bike unmercifully. What felt like forever to Kail, the road finally came to a cabin. Slowing down, the exorcist parked his bike, slowly standing up with sore bits here and there from the ride.
"I'm not going to kill you," he said, removing his helmet, "I'm going to cure you. Now come on; we've got work to do." Kail turned to walked a bit towards the woods, to search for the hiding-place of the keys to the cabin.

Shin felt uncomfortable having to sit on the bike fifteen minutes in. It was painful on his rear. But it wasn't as if there was anything he could do about it. The bumpy road made it worse. Once they finally stopped and he was able to stand, his entire lower half was sore and aching. "Unngh...hm?"
He looked up and around him, noticing their isolated surroundings. "This place...is...???" He turned upon hearing the other say they were going to cure him. "What are you, some kind of genius? The best doctors in the world couldn't cure me. What makes you think you can? You brought me out here to cure me? You'd be better off locking me inside and throwing away the key. I...whatever I have...whatever I am...it makes me too dangerous to be around anyone! What can an exorcist do that doctors can't?"

Kail didn't even turn around from his foraging as Shin spoke, only standing once he had the correct rock in hand, removing the taped key from underneath it before replacing the ice-cold stone. The exorcist turned around, hey in hand as he motioned for Shin to follow him to the cabin's front door.
"There are a lot of things I can do that doctors can't. Getting rid of demons, for one thing. And you, Shin, are certainly being bothered by a demon. Another thing I can do that certified doctors can't is last longer than a few days around you without losing my cool and trying to kill you. Which, from what I've gathered, happens a lot." Kail unlocked the door, opening up the cabin with a small frown. The place had definitely not been used for a while. But it was a safe-house, built to be of use to any exorcist that needed it. So it had all the necessary supplies, and three bedrooms. Only one bathroom though. And he would need to go out to but non-perishables.
Kail walked in anyway, heading for the fireplace. First things first: getting the place warmer.

Shin didn't know what to think, learning that he was possessed by a demon. But it was hard to think...that all his troubles, was for something very few people believed in, including him. "A demon. How can a demon have been plaguing me since I was a child? I never did anything wrong!"
He found this all a bit overwhelming. "Wait. You said you'd last longer. But who knows how long that is! And that doesn't mean it won't happen! No, no! I will not have the blood of an exorcist on my hands! You...you should just kill me. But if won't it, I'll handle it myself!"

Kail rolled his eyes, heading back outside to face the overwhelmed young man. "How could a demon be plaguing you? Simple. Perhaps your parents cussed up and did something bad enough to warrant their kid getting possessed. Maybe it's something to do with your bloodline. Or you were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Demons really don't care about specifics. So long as they can get into you, they will."
Unimpressed by Shin's concern, Kail simply grabbed the other tightly by the arm, dragging the possessed young man inside and out of the cold into the cold cabin. "Look, kid, this is my job. And I don't like things getting in my way, even clients. So just ... stop any talk of killing yourself. It's depressing." It had been a while since Kail had gotten a job, let alone one as ... dramatic as this one.
He let go of Shin close to the couch, grabbing a few logs to put into the fireplace.

Shin couldn't really argue back at Kail's words. He...didn't know about exorcists any more than he knew why what happened to him did. So now...he could only accept what the other proposed. But it didn't make him feel any better about his situation.
Sitting on the couch, he quietly reclined into himself once again, hugging his cold form tightly.

Kail was relived the other at least was quiet now, and soon had a warm fire going in the fireplace. Once that was accomplished, Kail left Shin to his ... whatever it was he was doing. Possibly wallowing, or processing what had happened. Either way, it gave the exorcist a wonderful chance to tidy the place up a bit. Fire going, making sue the water in the pipes wasn't frozen, dusting as best he could the rooms they were likely to use first. Like the kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms.
Once the cabin was a bit warmer and homely, Kail returned to where he'd left Shin, sitting down tiredly next to the other with a sigh and taking off his gloves. Considering the shattered end the last plate of food given to Shin had met, Kail decided not to ask if the other was hungry. But Kail knew right now would likely not be the best time to leave Shin completely unsupervised. At least ... not if the other was conscious.
Peeling off his boots and sock as well, fingers and toes truly appreciating the warm fire, Kail left a moment, returning with two cups of what looked like warm tea. "Here. You still look shaken up." The exorcist stood there, sipping at his own cup and clearly not in the mood to hear a 'no.' Particularly because he'd put a sedative in Shin's drink.
Couldn't have the client doing anything stupid like hanging himself while he was out getting proper groceries. Luckily, tea leaves didn't go bad, and there were always plenty of hidden supplies for keeping 'particularly difficult' clients and those possessed safe from themselves, and safe of others to handle.

Shin didn't really move from where he was sitting. The roaring fire in the fireplace was distracting him. And yet, even within the dancing flames, he could see them. No matter what he did, he saw the dead everywhere. It was driven him from sleep. Sleep...when was the last time he had that? He didn't sleep much anymore. Too scared. Might wake up with a knife at his throat. Ugh... He rubs a faint scar on his neck. Reliving that would be fairly unpleasant.
The closest he ever got to sleep was fading his consciousness away to shut his brain down, leaving only his instincts. Instincts...he was on alert right now. He was alone, with a exorcist he knew nothing about. The police handed him over a bit too easily as well. Why? Did they finally give up on him? What did it mean? What does it mean!?!?
He jumped a bit, watching the other warily as the exorcist sat next to him. He relaxed a bit as the other left him alone again, but tensed as he saw the two mugs. Tea... He could tell from the color within the mug. But why tea? Coffee is stronger, keep him awake. Police tried to give him tea too. But no, he hates tea. Makes him sleepy. Sleep. He's not ready to go to sleep. Never. Never again. Too much blood, to many voices, the screams...it'll get him. He can't stand it. Doesn't want it again.
Then a voice in his ear, as if right next to him, but only inside his brain, spoke to him. A tiny voice. Only there when he was on the edge of madness. That carefully quiet madness that always lead to him hurting himself. Something is in the tea. You know it. He knows it. Look at him. Some exorcist. Think he's so smart. That demons are real. Why would a demon go so far? There are better ways to amuse one self. Yeah. Yeah. Totally lying. He's just trying to make you crazy. Trying to make you become some low-life murderer. Look! You hands are twitching. Twi-twi-twitch! Hahaha! Drink. Drink and die. Drink and die! He'll lock you away and then the fun we shall play. Driving everyone mad...mad...mad, then you'll be on the run again.
"SHUT UP!" He shouted at the flames, eyes wide, but his pupils were dilated. He either needed some serious sleep...or something more. He looked down at his tea. "Poison...poison right? I hope it is. Please let it be..." He downed his tea all at once, not minding the heat of it all. "Ungh...can't sleep...so many faces...and the voices...they're the worse...ungh... I just...I just...I just wanna...wanna...unnnhhh..."
He fell quiet again, the sedative quickly working into his system. "U-uunnnhhh..." His eyes closed and the cup slipped form his hand as he drifted off to sleep.
