They may not be as glamorous as Photoshop CS6 Extended Edition (intentional drawn out name),
but at least you don't have to feel guilty for pirating. Some of them are pretty darn good, too!

Platforms: Windows, Mac/Linux?
I always recommend this one. This program is fantastic for digital painting.
As with most programs, it takes a little getting used to, and it's a little simplistic as far as features go,
but if you're looking for a free software, I recommend trying it out.
One of the coolest features (in my opinion) is the ability to
set up a server and invite other people to draw on the same canvas
with you, in real time. I'm not sure how to set it up, though
