Magical ability is very rare, concentrated in only a handful of family lines, and these families form aristocracies and royal families who often war amongst themselves for control over the land and its peoples. The rare magical plants and animals are sacred to the magical ruling class, and interference with them by non-magic users is punishable by death. Duniya has many climates, but most of the population lives in the tropical regions.

Personalityxxxxxxxx
Sinjini was born to her region's ruling clan, and she never ever forgets that. She is entitled, snobbish, and difficult to please: a princess in both the literal and pejorative senses of the world. She is accustomed to fine food and soft living, and pitches fits if things aren't just how she likes them.
She is also insecure and lonely under her vain exterior; her upbringing was left mostly to passive servants who saw to her needs and then left her alone, and Sinjini is so desperate for attention she'll provoke people just for the thrill of getting frowned at. She throws tantrums and overreacts, especially when she thinks it might let her manipulate someone else into doing something she wants. One of an interchangeable mass of royal children in her own world, she has a deep craving to distinguish herself as an individual.
She is slow to trust, but once she feels something or someone is hers, Sinjini gets protective to the point of being territorial. This has inevitably driven away what few friends she's managed to make in her life. (It doesn't help that her social skills are not the best.) Ahi, her pet snake, is the one thing Sinjini feels is absolutely loyal to her, and thus the one creature she most prizes.
Things like romance are completely irrelevant to her: Sinjini knows she'll be married off in an arranged match once she goes home, so what's the point?
Biographyxxxxxxxx
Sinjini was born a princess, but a low-ranked one: as the youngest daughter of the youngest son of the current king and queen of her homeland, she is as far down the totem pole as it is possible to be while still fitting her world's rules for royal status. As a result, she was never considered particularly important, and her parents left her to the servants to raise, sometimes forgetting her name on the rare occasions she's had a chance to speak with one of them.
As she grew older, Sinjini began to crave attention above all else. Attempts to gain her relatives' acknowledgement in positive ways failed: there was just too much competition, and with her many, many siblings and cousins excelling at so many different talents and skill sets, Sinjini couldn't find a way to stand out. She was good at magic and dance and various other things - but never quite good enough. Eventually, she tried getting attention in negative ways, acting out and causing trouble. Although her tricks and tantrums failed to get her the adult attention she wanted so much (she wasn't the only royal child to be trying that route), it did manage to infuriate a few of her siblings and cousins. Which was something, at least.
Fed up with an elaborate fit of hysterics, one of her cousins one day shoved her through a door in the palace hallway - one which no one could recall having ever seen before. After an (actual) fit of hysterics at finding herself in a strange academy, Sinjini asked enough questions and did enough exploring to decide that she absolutely was going to stay. Finally, an opportunity to distinguish herself from her siblings and cousins!
Sinjini already had a grasp on time magic from her studies at home, but has spent a year at the school extending her knowledge. She hopes to soon expand her repertoire to another element: preferably one unusual in Duniya, to allow her to finally stand out.
