Artists throughout time have always been trying to come up with new ideas and concepts. It's getting to the point now, where ideas are being repeated, recreated and moulded to look like something different. Contemporary art is starting to lose meaning because everything has already been done. New meanings are being created from old artworks when artists start using appropriation, but I can't help but still see the original artwork. There are contemporary artists who consider a few strokes of a massive brush on a massive canvas to be a masterpiece, when I still look at it and think "Did someone have a paint fight in here." I don't understand contemporary art, so I think I'll just stick to the old fashion stuff.

Contemporary art is a hugeeeeeeeee field tho. ^^ Even in the past, ideas were ALWAYS being "repeated, recreated and moulded," as no one person in history has ever been 100% original, and all time periods are influenced by those before them. ." Impressionism didn't come out of nowhere, and cave paintings didn't immediately lead to hyper-realism.

That's my opinion though, and I agree with you when it comes to artists like Jackson Pollock. s: srsly wat is up wit dat guy s:

My personal opinion is that things can only be called art if the artist put a significant amount of work, effort and mastery into them. And I've seen some pretty amazing contemporary art pieces including all of those. 4laugh
But I will admit that making a few strokes on a blank canvas and calling it art is bullshit and downright insulting to people who actually work on their pieces. stare

I completely agree with this. As long as someone puts effort and thought into their work, they have the right to call it art I believe ^_^ I guess I just have my personal tastes of what I like and don't like, but in no way can I say something isn't art when someone has put their heart into it.

Depends. I went to the smithsonian and saw a black streak on a canvas. Like come on. I could do that. But then what if you put a giant eye out of acrylic in the middle of the canvas and then roughly cover the whole canvas except the center of the eye in oil paints, all in muted autumn colors as well as purples and greens? Would that count as contemporary? I think that would be a great picture.
