Yuuna Akashi Fly free on endless seas the final curtain falls Cut the ground from down below The time to lock and to load It wasn't snowing yet at Mahora, but it definitely was cold enough to. Even with her temperature-regulated armor--this stuff was nice, and she did not want to know how much it cost--she still felt a little bit of chill around her elbows and knees where the heaters bled a little energy into the surrounding air.
The steaming cup off hot chocolate fresh from Starbooks in her right hand kept her hand extra warm, but she didn't want to drink it yet because it was still scalding, and she'd have to take off her nice warm helmet to do so. Turning away from Starbooks' festival kiosk along the parade route, she started toward Fireteam Charlie's spot in the parade. Inside her helmet, a floating blue diamond on her HUD marked the destination.
A few people were already there; the fully-functional Scorpion tank and its crew of three were preparing to roll; the size of the thing meant they had to bring it in during the night, and regs mandated a firewatch on the vehicle. There was also supposed to be a full-crewed Warthog and Mongoose, or maybe it was two Mongooses. Either way, those crews weren't here yet, nor were any other of the three elite teams.
Taking a moment to greet the tankers, she then walked to the side of the street and sat down on the curb, popping her helmet with a hiss of compressed air and setting it beside her before taking a lip-blistering sip of the hot chocolate. Through the fire, through the rain Far across the distant plains Feel the wind beneath the steel

She rubbed her arms. Even in the jacket she had brought, a modified version of Yuna's Psychic Dressphere jacket that she had made to match most of her short-sleeved outfits, provided little warmth. She continued down the parade route, searching through booths that had been set up for something to munch on. Breakfast hadn't been as filling as she thought it might have been.
She decided on a muffin and some kind of sugary hot white-chocolate coca thing. It had sounded tasty, but she was wary of it. White chocolate has a 50/50 chance of being horrible sometimes.
Movement caught her eye. Or perhaps sheer bulk. She turned as she was grabbing her cocoa to spot a huge tank. The brunette rose and eyebrow at it and wandered towards it. It definitely reminded her of some game she had seen before. Something on the 360? There were people around it in costume. So she stopped at the edge of the street to watch curiously. And to try and remember what it was from.
God, it was some simple name, and it was just on the tip of her damn tongue. Her brow creased in mild frustration.ஐﻬ¸¸.•´´¯``•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´´¯``•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´ஐﻬ Treat your love like a firefly, like it only gets to shine for a little while. Yuuna Akashi Fly free on endless seas the final curtain falls Cut the ground from down below The time to lock and to load
The tank crew ignored the girl gawking at them from the edge of the street, and at first Yuuna didn't even notice her presence from the other side of the street, busy fiddling with something in her helmet, a cell phone held in her free hand.
After several moments, she appeared to grow increasingly-frustrated with whatever it was she was doing, before finally deciding that she'd had enough. "Damn it!" she cursed, visibly resisting the urge to either throw her helmet or slam her phone to the ground.
This shout drew the attention of the pintle machine gunner of the Scorpion, who looked up at the gamer girl. "What's going on, Yuuna?" he asked. "Malfunction in your suit?"
"No, call it user error," she answered, shoving her phone back into a pouch. "Still can't figure out how to do that thing that my armor's supposed to do that lets me use my phone hands-free through my HUD."
The gunner listened to her, then shrugged and resumed inspecting his turret. "Can't help you there, I'm afraid." He tapped the much more simple UNSC Marine helmet he wore. "We don't get the same toys you deluxe models do." Through the fire, through the rain Far across the distant plains Feel the wind beneath the steel

Hotaru tried not to, but eavesdropping was inevitable. Huh. So those helmets were set up with HUDs? That was pretty high speed.
She turned to the girl and tilted her head to the side.

Yuuna Akashi Fly free on endless seas the final curtain falls Cut the ground from down below The time to lock and to load
After deeming that she wasn't going to be able to figure out the HUD-connection setup on her own and resolving to wait for the rest of her squad--surely they'd all figured it out themselves--she'd turned her attention back to the hot chocolate she'd bought. It was getting awful cold without her helmet on, but the suit was keeping the rest of her nice and warm.
She was halfway through a sip of the steaming liquid when the girl had posed the question to her. The foam cup still tipped over halfway, she turned her head in the direction the question had come from, and took half an instant to scrutinize the girl. The hairstyle she had going looked familiar, but the outfit itself--clearly she was in cosplay for the festival--wasn't ringing any bells.
"Oh, this." She made an encompassing gesture that took in the tank and its crew with her free hand. "It's from Halo. We're from the 'Fireteam Charlie' demonstration club co-founded by the Military Enthusiasts' Club and the Electronic Gaming Club."
She managed to repress a smirk and a self-satisfied nod; she'd been practicing to make sure she could deliver that little bit of propaganda line. Through the fire, through the rain Far across the distant plains Feel the wind beneath the steel

Halo, yeah, okay. Now it sounded familiar. She glanced back to the tank and then back to the girl in armor.
"Yeah, that makes sense. I remember now, it's that game about the green armor-y guy, right?"
She paused. Then asked without waiting for an answer.
"So how come your armor is black?"ஐﻬ¸¸.•´´¯``•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´´¯``•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´ஐﻬ Treat your love like a firefly, like it only gets to shine for a little while. Catch it in a mason jar, with holes in the top, and run like hell to show it off.

Yuuna Akashi Fly free on endless seas the final curtain falls Cut the ground from down below The time to lock and to load
It took all of Yuuna's willpower not to puff up and preen at getting to explain the differences between ODSTs and SPARTANs to an impressionable outsider. There was no helping the grin that spread across her face, though.
Setting down the cup of cocoa somewhere where she probably wouldn't spill it, she rocked backwards, then used the forward momentum to shove herself up to her feet. Once upright, she scooped her helmet up in her left hand and then turned to face the girl, so she could get the full view of the armor.
"The guy you're thinking of is the Master Chief. His armor is different, because he's a different kind of soldier, all experimented on and genetically-enhanced and all that stuff."
She gestured at her own kit. "Now this is the armor worn by Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, the best that the Corps has to offer. Rated for hard vacuum and energy resistant, and besides all that, it just looks cooler. And ODSTs can still kill the Covenant without having to have super-strength or any of that garbage."
"Tank still beats everything..." remarked the turret gunner of the Scorpion. Through the fire, through the rain Far across the distant plains Feel the wind beneath the steel

Master Chief sounded kind of familiar. When Yuna stood to let Hotaru get a better view of the armor, Hotaru gave it that critical eye that a fellow cosplayer gives another, assessing the cohesive quality of the outfit.
The terms started to fill her head. Master Chief, Orbital Drop Shock Trooper, Covenant. To be entirely truthful, the language more or less hit glass and then slid off of Hotaru's brain, failing to stick. Not that she wasn't interested, but without context from the plot or from playing the game, the technical jargon of the realm was failing to leave too much of an impression on the other girl.
Hotaru looked ponderous. "If... he has super-strength, though, wouldn't that make that guy better?"
She paused and looked Yuuna over again, though. "Your armor is cooler, though." She smiled kindly, truly appreciating the craftsmanship of the kit Yuuna was wearing.ஐﻬ¸¸.•´´¯``•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´´¯``•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´ஐﻬ Treat your love like a firefly, like it only gets to shine for a little while. Once again she had to refrain from the first response that came to mind, only this one of a more negative nature than the last. Namely, flipping s**t on the poor girl for innocently suggesting the naturally-occurring (but still wrong) conclusion that a SPARTAN was better than an ODST. Had it been someone who was into the genre, then by all means, the gates of hell would've just been flung open, but she couldn't fault someone who didn't play for not knowing better.
With her right hand, she raised a finger matter-of-factly and explained, "You would think that, but what that really means is that he's not up to scruff without the super-strength and all that. He can't hack it without those advantages, know what I mean? That is what makes us ODSTs so awesome."
Of course, that was just the competitive nature of interservice rivalry talking, because Yuuna actually had great respect for the Chief--he fights aliens and doesn't afraid of anything, after all--but she had her pride in her chosen aspect of the Halo universe.
At the compliment of her armor, she raised her arms out to her sides, turning them over and then back again, and flexed the fingers of her right hand. "Well, I can't take credit for the quality of the kit. I didn't make it, it was actually furnished to me. And it does, indeed, operate completely to the game's spec." Having grown bored of standing on the roof and watching the proceedings and deeming that there was nothing more suspicious than high school students sneaking off (possibly for quikies) he wandered off into the crowd. After a few minutes of walking he spotted something familiar and smiled before walking over.
"Hey there Helljumper! How goes the fight?" He asked jovially "Hear things got rough on Requiem but you guys came out victorious in the end. Good work!"

"Yeah, I suppose that make sense. I suppose that does make ODSTs better then."
Hotaru glanced over as another person, a boy, approached. She stood back a bit, since he obviously was addressing the girl in armor, but she couldn't help but smile a little bit. It was always a bit of a giddy feeling she got when people showed their love for fandom culture, so, even though she had very little idea what Halo was and what ODSTs were, it was making her feel good just to be around people of somewhat similar interests.ஐﻬ¸¸.•´´¯``•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´´¯``•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´ஐﻬ Treat your love like a firefly, like it only gets to shine for a little while. "It's all good, though," she remarked, giving a thumbs up and a conspiratorial wink. "We still let Chief think he's the star of the show."
When that new fellow showed up and called out to her, she turned in his direction even as she was registering what he was saying. A wide, confident grin spreading across her face, she planted her fists on her hips and nodded exuberantly. "Damn right, it was! Fricken hinge-head trying to throw us into the sun. He was smart to run, cos he's done when we catch up to him!"
"Hey, boss, how 'bout a spoiler alert?" a new voice called out. "Yeah, sounds like this guy played all the way through Spartan Ops, but the little lady over here may not have."
From up the street came nine more guys and gals in ODST armor, each with some kind of personalized touch. These were the other members of Yuuna's Cleric Team, here to take part in the opening parade. It was Hatsu Uno, the self-appointed playboy of the team, who'd just spoken, and as he spoke of Hotaru, he gave her a nod and a perhaps a little too friendly smile.
"So first it was no armor, and then it was armor again," Sean Hartley, the XO of the team, teased Yuuna as they grouped up. "Not going to have us go back and ditch the armor now, are you?"
Rolling her eyes, Yuuna turned and stepped toward the American, reaching out her right hand for a 'combat handshake'--reaching past Hartley's gloved hand to seize his wrist in a firm, fast grip. "Now that you mention it, I did get a call from Colonel Ruiz a second ago..."
Stepping back, she pulled her phone out of the pouch she'd stuffed it in. "Or at least I would have, if I could remember how to get this damn thing linked up to my helmet."
Katsuki Nishihara, the techie of the team, laughed. "Still can't get that sorted out, Guns?" He stepped up and grabbed the gunslinger girl's helmet and cell phone, then started tinkering with the interior of her bucket. "I'll get it set up for you in a sec." So, I think it's safe to say to say I don't know anything about the series other than my newly acquired knowledge that ODSTs are awesome."
The girl cast her eyes about the squad, taking in their appearances. All the kits were amazing. She was a little shocked by how seamless and well made the armor was. If she had tried to make something of this quality, she would have been forming pepakura for months.
Her attention was drawn back to Yuuna.

(Masato and company arrive from Dorm #7)
People naturally cleared out of the way for Masato and his three companions as they made their way to the parade grounds. A lot feared Masato might tear off people's limbs or bite, but after seeing the words written on his collar ("Mahora Robotics Engineering") and several university students recognizing Ayame ("Professor Usanagi" to them) and petting Masato themselves, the crowd quickly lost their fear of the giant white fox and Masato calmly set himself down on the ground; wrapping his big bushy tail over his paws while Ayame petted and nuzzled him. More and more people started to gather and the crowd of spectators grew ever larger, but even as they did so, Gilly and Serenity could still see well over everyone's heads from where they were, as could Ayame as she climbed back up next to them. They had the best seats in the house; warm, high-up, and plushie and all that remained now was for the opening parade to begin.
