The Shadows' Son

User Image

Fourteen years ago, a boy not of this world was found in one of the lonely back alleys of New York. Nearly dead and soaked into a cold delirium from the freezing fall rain, he was rushed to the nearest hospital where the emergency team rushed to stop the bleeding from the broad cut on the child's lower back. All the boy's talk of 'monsters' and a man trying to get him were ignored, and once the six-year-old was found to be unwilling to give a last name or any other information besides that about the 'monsters' and 'that man.' He was shipped into foster care, and given psychiatric help.

That was fourteen long years past.

Today, that boy is now a twenty-year-old young man. Homeless, Vorax wanders around with the other vagabonds of the sprawling city and makes his daily living. All he has are dark half-remembered threats from his childhood world, and confusion of being in this odd place like, but not, his home world. He is a marooned orphan, lost and without a drive in life ... until one day digging through the dumpster behind a nice Italian restaurant. Guys there were nice, and sometimes gave out freebies. Not to forget: the dumpster itself was always a good place to find stale bread ... so long as the rats hadn't gotten to it first.

It was then he saw it. Sitting down the alleyway a few yards, deeper in the shadows. Two glowing green eyes gleaming out at him from a dark ... slimy face. A Monster. It seemed vaguely the size and shape of a fox, but its unearthly eyes were what shocked Vorax the most. Any other man might've ran from such a thing ... but he didn't. He grabbed the nearest weapon at-hand (at that time a plank of leftover firewood) and went after it, and pursued the beast until the light of day made the shadows short, and the beast hid.

Things went like this for the next two years. During that time, little changed. Vorax still didn't own a home, and he still scrapped a rough sort of living for himself. But now, his life had a grim sort of purpose. He'd gotten his hands on a gun ... not exactly legally either. That made for buying ammo a bit hard, but Vorax didn't care. He had a purpose in life. Chasing down those inky shadow monsters, and shooting them when he could. Like his prey, the man slept by day and worked by night.

It was one such night something ... unusual happened.

The shadows beasts (of varying shapes and sizes, but usually quadruped and all with the same, striking green eyes) never went near other people. Never let themselves be seen by anyone but him. Until that night, when one ran down one of the many dark alleys of the darker New York, where few people even dared to lurk ... an alley with some man in it. Vorax didn't hesitate; he shot the creature in the back as its green eyes looked at the likely-scared-shitless witness, before walking over to this stranger, this person. The shadow monster's body melted into the darkness, leaving no sign that it had ever existed at all.

Unwashed, face stubby and unshaven, he glared at this other human being and grunted. "You okay?" As much of a loaner as he was ... this was an unprecedented situation. He'd always been alone. Always been that slightly 'crazy' but 'harmless' homeless guy. It was weird ... but nice, to have a possibility of not being so alone. If only to share this odd nightmare he called a life.

Rules and the Important Information:

- Attempt to write with literacy. Spell check, acceptable grammar (I'm not a Nazi), and a length that both describes and gives good attempts at ... well, story telling. No one-liners, but I don't force posters to go uber-long. Just good replies are needed, okay?

-Side characters are encouraged, whoever they may be.

- Don't disappear. Really. Give a heads-up for absences that last more than a week. There's nothing more despised than a person who just drops a RP without a word. Tell me if you get bored and want to move on to another RP without me. Please. Really; I don't mind being left; just tell me your leaving.

- Have fun. Talk to me Out Of Character with [], {}, or (()) if you want to add a comment, make a suggestion, etc. or PM if you like that better.

- Follow Gaia's TOS

-No extreme Godmodding

-When applying with your character, use a PM. Title the PM 'Loving the Shadow Chaser' when submitting, or I won't read it. Also, in this PM, put in what your first post would be. I find seeing where my partner wants to take things right from the get-go says a lot about them. I hold onto my right to refuse applications as well; this is not first-come first-serve.

-When joining, bear in mind that I can't come up with all of the ideas, and neither can you. So lets work together! I've got a plot in mind for my character, so make sure to have a plot of sorts for yours before joining!

-Character requirements: He must be a guy. I don't mind whether he's uke, seme, or whatever! Nuff said.

What's he like personally? What's his past?: To say it politely, Vorax lives for one thing only: to chase shadows. He's never liked this world, and is forever yearning after the home world he's mostly forgotten by now. Growing up being ridiculed and being called crazy not only by adults, but by other fosters kids, has left him as a highly self-absorbed individual with little care for others, because caring about other people has only hurt him in the past. So, he is distant, obsessed with his 'duty,' and untrusting. The rest of his past is above.

Shoogar Hiie
Name: Kageko
Age: 21
Physical description (or a picture): Will you shoot me too...?
What's he like personally?: As his name states, Kageko was tainted by the shadows, forever stained with their marks at birth. The only time you see their work is at night when he is chased by the very beings that marked him in order to finish the job. He is timid, quiet and jumpy. Since he has to work now, he is forced to leave the safety of his house during the evening unlike when he was contained as a child. Now, after so many years of hiding and running, the shadows seem to be catching on to his habits and routes. What will become of this 'shadow child'?

Kageko ran. The only thing he could do. The shadows had been following him and he could sense their very presence. He skidded to a stop and then ran down an alley, hoping to escape the evil things that lurked, but found himself surrounded by them. He looked back. No escape route in sight. He pressed himself against a wall, curling into himself. Well... This was the last time he would walk in the light. A gunshot. A small shred of hope. Opening his eyes, the brunette looked up to see himself being stared at by the wounded shadow before it vanished. A voice. Another person. A... Question? He hadn't been asked that in a long time. "I... I'm okay. Thank you." The younger male said, standing upright. Kageko gave the other a nod of the head as he dusted himself off. This was probably a bad idea. Speaking with a human, however, he couldn't help but notice that this 'human' had seen the shadows for what they actually were and managed to kill it. "How did you... You can see them? How?"

Vorax's eyes quickly scanned the area for any other traces of glowing green within the black as the stranger picked himself up, but it looked like the shadows were gone. For now. One hand clenched into a tight fist and the other griping his gun, he looked back to the male he'd saved. "I could be asking you the same thing," he said, taking a moment to push down his hood from his cheap-but-warm hoodie. The shadows had never bothered with anyone else before ... never been seen by anyone else, to Vorax's knowledge. Who was this guy?

And then Vorax caught sight of black ... spots? Splatters, on the other? The homeless man took two steps back, his gun down but ready to fire should this 'man' turn out to be some sort of new shadow trick. "What's that? What's that on you?" He lifted the weapon, aiming at the other's torso in warning. "Speak up!"

Kageko blinked when the other questioned his appearance and jumped when the weapon was pointed at him. He looked around fora way out. "You... Will you shoot me if I tell you that the shadows stained me with their own touch...?" He asked softly. He wanted to know the other's reaction to these words. He didn't know whether to feel safe or threatened now. A bit of both really. It was odd. The black splatters on his skin began moving about somewhat, whiling and squirming about that side of his body. He winced, giving a small sound of pain. As the moon rose high above.

Vorax felt his eyes narrow slightly as the guy began looking around, probably for a route of escape. But in this dirty back alley there were only two ways out ... one of them fenced. Which left only one reasonable direction for the stranger to go in if he really wanted to run, and it was an awfully long few yards to go to escape a bullet in the back. But the homeless male felt his stomach drop at what the blue-eyed man said, eyes wide in unhidden shock. The ... the shadows could taint people? A chill rock settled in his core, thinking of how those eerie 'mouths' that glowed bright green down at the throat must've bitten into this sad son-of-a-b**ch to somehow ... 'infect' him. But what did it mean?

The gun held steady, only giving the slightest shake when the black spots started moving like odd tadpoles underneath (or on? Or both?) the other's skin, and seemed to hurt the male a bit. The familiar weight of the M9 was reassuring to him even in the face of the unknown. The moonlight was also reassuring; during a new moon was when things tended to really go to hell at night and there wasn't any light to deter the monsters at all. Moonlight didn't stop them but ... it was better than nothing.

But Vorax still had a question to answer. He could be one of them in a human skin. Or ... or he could be turning into one, like a werewolf. How can I possibly even think of tolerating someone who's got bits of shadow in him? And yet, despite these thoughts, he didn't pull the trigger. After so long of being alone ... even the temporary company of just about anyone was preferable to shooting and walking away. Not to mention murder was not something Vorax wanted to risk getting imprisoned for. "... No. No, I won't shoot you, so long as you don't give me a reason to," he said, eying the splatter of shadow on the other uneasily but slowly lowered his handgun.

"What are you doing in a lower-end neighborhood like this, anyway? And why ... how can you see them?" Vorax said (ignoring the fact that the other had asked him that first and he still hadn't given a proper answer) before he used his free hand to push his long-ish bangs to the side, the rest of his hair greasy and unwashed. Not to mention he needed a good shave sometime soon before the stubble became more like a wild-man's beard. He'd have to make a stop at a soup kitchen and try to get some bathroom time if possible, once the sun rose and all creatures of the dark were sure to be gone.

Blue eyes blinked. The other seemed quite dense. "Er... Since I have part of their being in me, then it's hard not to see and hear them. Its not infectious if you wanted to know that as well. Only newborns can actually be touched and infected by the shadows. I'm their only mistake, however." he explained, relaxing only slightly when the gun was lowered. When the markings finally stopped squirming, they rested on his skin like a tattoo would. "I was on my way home. It's not safe. The longer we stay out during the night, the more likely they are to come. They have found my usual routes to and from work." Kageko added, glancing about.

"I need to get inside." he said as he motioned for the rough-looking male to follow his lead. "My home isn't too far away. You can come along if you want. I can run you a bath and provide you with food for helping me." Kageko offered, pushing his glasses up on his nose.
PostPosted: Wed Nov 14, 2012 4:05 pm

Vorax grimaced at the explanation, looking at Kageko as if the blue-eyed male had just told him that he had a bunch of maggots squirming around under his skin. Disgusting. Shadows inside of him? Part of their 'being' in him? Maybe it might be best to just go on my way ... The dark-brown haired man scoffed and rolled his eyes at Kageko's statement of the obvious though. "Yeah, no s**t. They aren't stupid, and if they want to find you, they will." Looked like the four-eyed guy needed to find new routes for the dark hours, at the very least.

But it was when the stranger motioned for the homeless male to follow that Vorax looked completely confused a second. This guy, whatever his name was, clearly attracted trouble. And by trouble, he meant shadows. Vorax was all for taking the initiative and going after shadows instead of running away, but hanging out with this guy seemed just plain stupid. But the guy was offering food. Vorax had stuff to do like ... sleeping in a cardboard box somewhere or waiting for more shadows to show up to get pot-shots at them and--But Kageko was offering free f**king food.

Vorax hesitated a second, before rolling his eyes and shuffling along behind the cleaner man, clicking the gun's safety on before sliding the weapon into his pocket. He kept his hand on it though, eyes scanning the dead streets as they left the alley and walked on.

"... Name's Vorax." He kept scanning the area ... and not walking too close to the presentable stranger, just in case Kageko really was a shadow agent or something crazy like that, even if that was looking extremely unlikely at this point. Infected as a kid, huh? I wonder what he'd do if I told him I've been able to see them since before I came here ... that I'm not of this world? He'd probably think I'm crazy. I wonder what kind of place he's got, anyway. Probably a well-lit one, if the shadows really do chase him for whatever reason ... I guess that's cause he's their 'mistake' as he put it. Food ... He swallowed down some spit, salivating at all the possibilities.

"You always this rude?" he inquired, raising a brow as they started off toward his home. it was quite obvious that 'Vorax' didn't talk to others much, and if he did, he had a personality he really didn't like. Stopping suddenly, Kageko grabbed his 'savior's' arm and pulled him down another street and quickly into a building, closing the door and automatically turning on the main power switch, causing the lights in the house to slowly come on, one-by-one.

Sighing, the blue-eyed male walked further into the nicely built home. "Ah, please wait while i run your bath. I'll cook afterward." he informed, walking up the stairs to the bathroom and filling the tub with hot water, putting a towel on the sink, along with a washcloth. he placed the shampoo and soap next to the tub and then sighed, walking back down to his guest. "It's ready. I'll find something for you to wear later. It's the room directly across from the staircase. Take your time."
PostPosted: Wed Nov 14, 2012 5:43 pm

The man huffed at the 'rude' comment, actually having the gall to look offended. "I say it like it is," Vorax said in his own defense, though ... it was a bit odd to be talking to someone. Especially such an odd stranger that apparently had only one key thing in common with him: the monsters of the night. "Besides, you're the one who hasn't even told me his na--!?" Vorax stiffened in the other's grip, barely tolerated being dragged to the side and into a building ... until the darkness was steadily vaporized by the many high-output lights as they came on slowly.

Dang. It was a full sized house. Heck, for a place like this in the city, the stranger had to be rich, or well-connected. And the electric bill had to be through the roof for so many lights. Vorax blinked slowly when the bespectacled male went upstairs, and mutely looked around a little bit, even daring to take his hand out of his pocket where the gun rested. No shadows would dare come in here, that was for sure. That fact alone relaxed half of the tense muscles in Vorax's body as he looked around a bit more leisurely, and less critically as he had been of the dark spaces outside. This was a really nice place, especially for New York.

He turned his head when the other returned from upstairs, and grunted some odd noise that sounded almost like a 'thanks' before going up himself. Food was obviously more at the forefront of his mind than cleanliness, but the man wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth. The clean white-tile bathroom was as easy to find as his own feet once he got upstairs, and he went in without bothering to lock the door and took out the contents of his pockets onto the sink next to the towels. A mostly-empty wallet, his gun, two extra magazines of bullets, and a toothbrush. Not much, but it was enough. Most of the time.

Looking at his options, he decided to peel off his clothes that had been worn so long they felt more like a second skin to him now. Hoodie first, then a horribly-faded black t-shirt. Then his sweat pants, and boxers. Naked, Vorax grabbed a razor and shaving cream before heading over into the tub, sliding down with a slow sigh. The feeling of lowering himself into the warm tub of water was a luxury he hadn't enjoyed since he was a kid in foster care. Nowadays, showers at the soup kitchen or public gym were the choices he had to keep clean. That, or swimming around in a lake at central park.

After a few minutes of just enjoying being warm and letting the stale, soaked-in sweat and dirt get 'softened up' a little, he began the cleansing process. He lathered shampoo into his greasy hair, then began to slowly shave himself without a mirror. Not the most accurate way to shave, but Vorax was used to it and he used his hands to feel where he was smooth or rough. That ate up quite a few minutes of his time but hey: the guy had told him to take his time. The food had to be cooked and all that. Mmm ... freshly cooked food. Almost sounded too good to be true.

True or not, Vorax eventually dunked his head, scrubbing away the lathered shampoo and leaving his hair to be cleaner than it had been in a week. "Ah," the lean male sighed happily, then grabbed the soap to get at the rest of his boney body. He could count most of his ribs, and his love handles were clear for the world to see but at least his stomach wasn't shrunken against the back of his spine or anything horrific. At least, not to Vorax. He scrubbed himself from top to bottom, as happy as a seal in a sea park and turning the once-clear water a cloudy, brown-ish murk. But usually he didn't get the luxury of all the time in the world to enjoy himself and not have to be ogled by other folks in a group shower, or have someone else banging on the bathroom door for a turn.

But, as with all good things, the water had to cool and Vorax got out and began to towel-dry himself off with quick hands, eager to get to his reward-meal. He did take the time to finish up shaving with the bathroom mirror and getting any stray hairs he might've missed in the tub, which was now draining out its unclean water down the drain.

Shaven, towel around his waist since he had yet to wash his clothes, Vorax decided to leave most of the stuff where he'd found it, but bought his stuff back downstairs with him. Clothing, gun, and everything in his arms as he curiously crept downstairs, sniffing for food and not particularly caring about his near-nakedness. They were both guys, no big deal.

As the time passed that Vorax bathed, Kageko had made a full course meal. It consisted of a salad, large slices of turkey and gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans. There was even a plate of chicken if the other preferred that over turkey. a glass of wine was poured and there was desert for later if Vorax decided to take part in sweets. he, himself, didn't eat much, but having a lot of leftovers would make for plenty of meals when needed.

Spotting the hunter as he peeked around, the blue-eyed male nodded. "Come on in. You can start eating while I find some clothes." the timid male said, slipping past his guest and heading toward his own room, searching for warm clothes that would fit the other. It didn't take too long though. he rushed back down the stairs, having to stop himself from tripping.

Heaving a sigh, he placed the clothes on the couch for the other to get when he was done eating. "I hope it's all to your liking."

Vorax almost couldn't believe his eyes when he found the massive spread set out all for the two of them on the table, eyes wide and mouth sagging down like an unhinged door. Was it Thanksgiving already? No, it just still in that odd time between summer and fall when the weather was turning brisk, and soon to be chill. But there was so much freaking food for just the two of them! It was wonderfully insane! Vorax hurried forward at the words 'you can start eating' and dumped his stuff on an extra chair beside himself before piling food onto his plate and stuffing his face with a grand total of zero table manners. Chicken or turkey? Vorax began digging into both with equal ferocity. Gravy? His mashed potatoes were drowning in it. The green beans were unmercifully slaughtered one by one as he impaled the stalks with his fork and shoved them into his waiting maw to mash them into nothing but green mush to be swallowed.

He was on his seconds plate-full of food when heard someone talk. Ah, that guy. Vorax said something completely unintelligible around his mouthful of food--though it sounded like it could be positive feedback?--before going back to eating like a dog given raw, wonderful steak. Tearing in and swallowing thing near-whole at times. Once his third plateful of food was gone and he'd gulped down a full glass of water in one gulping go, Vorax leaned back in his seat with a very content sigh, then a bletch. "Oh, that was a good one," he said to himself, for the first time in a long while feeling stuffed full of good and non-greasy food. "Thanks again," he said off-hand, standing and heading over to the couch. He tossed off the towel and got himself dressed, blinking at the feeling of being clean in new-ish clothes. It was ... wonderfully nice.

Feeling a lot less like something scrapped of the street and more like a decent human being, Vorax walked back over to the table to grab his old clothes and to pocket his few personal items. "Well, guess I'd best get going. Try not to walk out in predictable patterns then, and take care of yourself, guy," he said awkwardly, not used to ... well, being taken care of. It was hard knowing what to say when no one had ever bothered with him before. But hey, he didn't want to overstay his welcome. The stranger had offered him a bath and food, not a free night's stay.

"Kageko." he said, giving his name finally. He nodded to the other. "You are welcome to come here around this time if you want food or a bath or somewhere to stay. Keep your eyes and ears open." he said as he turned to start cleaning the kitchen table and wash the dishes. He quickly cleared the table, but washed the dished and utensils in a thoughtful manner.

Another person who could see them... How refreshing. The blue-eyed male gave a small smile and finished up his work before sitting at the table. After all of that running, he was a bit exhausted.

Vorax nodded slightly, taking in the name and offer given to him. "... Thanks." And then, he left, bringing himself to the front door and departing. It was still dark out, and likely to remain that way for at least another five hours. Vorax checked his gun before walking out into the night once more, on-alert. But, besides a few solitary shadows here-and-there, the night was relatively quiet. So by the time dawn rolled around, Vorax yawned and got to work finding a quiet place to sleep for the day.

He eventually settled down leaning against an alley wall, using the shade the buildings offered while he snoozed sitting up, chin resting against his knees as he curled up as best he could. It wasn't a comfortable way to sleep but hey. It was quieter than one of the homeless shelters would be this time of day.

Kegako soon enough went to sleep in the bright house, not one corner left unlit. He had grown accustomed to this kind of lifestyle. It was quiet and uncomfortable, but he managed. When the sun did finally roll around, the blue-eyed male got up and quickly got dressed, needing to stop at a few shops in order to obtain things for the evening like a flashlight or two to ward off the shadows.

While out and about, he did, however, notice Vorax in a nearby alley. Thinking momentarily, Kageko raced off to do his shopping and then returned, panting heavily. He covered the man in a warm blanket. Then, he went back to his house and prepared a bit of breakfast food for him, putting it all in a bag. After running back, he adjusted his glasses and quietly put the bag there and stuck a note under it that read: "My offer still stands."

Walking away, he wondered if it was okay for him to have come in contact with Vorax. His scent had surely rubbed off on him and that in itself was dangerous.
PostPosted: Mon Nov 19, 2012 3:10 pm

Needless to say, when Vorax first awoke he was quite confused. He woke up when he usually did--which was roughly two hours until sundown--only to look at the new blanket and bag of food in confusion. He was highly suspicious, looking around before cautiously pulling the food closer, only to find the note underneath. Blinking, Vorax snorted after reading it, then got to eating the now-pretty-cold breakfast food that had been left for him. Then, he folded up the blanket and walked off, glad he wouldn't have to go dumpster diving or bagging at the back door of a restaurant to get something to eat.

It was near-dark when Vorax knocked on the door he knew to be Kegako's, waiting a few moments to see if the other was home. If the other wasn't, the Vorax would just go off looking for him.

Hearing the knock at his door, Kageko hesitantly descended down the stairs, flashlight in hand. He unlocked the door and turned the device on, shining it through the crack of the door. "Huh? Vorax? Oh come in." he said, opening the door and ushering for the other to come in.

"Were you here for a meal or a bath or a bed?" he asked with a small smile, quite enjoying the other's company. Motioning to the couch, kageko looked around. "Ummm is there anything you would like to eat in particular?"
