Katai has always been the solitary type of person. A lone wolf so to speak, He has no family to speak of and has always relied on himself for motivation to get him through his own personal problems. Speaking very little on matters that didn't matter to him specifically some could call him aloof or detached on a personal level. Most don't know if he has any hobbies or little quirks about his demeanor. Though the truth of the matter Katai is a stoic, he shields his emotions and personal beliefs in the wake of situations that would be painful or hard on the normal individual. It is his duty to serve and that is what he does, to uphold the laws is his purpose. There is no greater calling for him.
Character Strengths:

Can you imagine what I would do if I could do all I can? "A certain level of diligence carries Katai among his peers and those of the Rukon, he believes and personifies hard work. His belief is that though the outcome may not be favorable or desired, but the fact that he worked towards an end is favorable than doing nothing. It is a trait he carried over from his past life in the Sengoku (Warring States) Period of Japan.

Loyalty and devotion lead to bravery Katai is a disciplined young man. Though quiet and reserved the warrior is heavily devoted to Soul Society and the good of it's people, those who cannot protect themselves and to the balance that must be upheld when protecting the Living World as the law states and his training dictates. In the face of danger the man is brave and unwavering in his resolve to do his duty.

Character Weaknesses:
To play shogi amounted to a duty. Katai is almost like too old fashioned, he will gamble to his heart's content in a game of shogi or horned beetle wrestling. Or almost any competition should the politics be right. He is a very smart man but a poor gambler, most of his winnings go towards his second vice if he attains any at all.

“I drink a bottle, and can write 100 poems” Sake! Sake sake and more sake! Hot, or cold. Though the former is preferred to his tastes but the latter will do on a lonely night. The habit of drinking has taken hold of Katai, but he does not drink in public for it would be dishonorable to his Captain and his squad, most importantly to himself. But in the private hours of being off duty or if offered a drink when in the company of comrades, he cannot resist but a few cups. Maybe one, three or five! Remarkably however, he holds his liquor better than most. Unless of course, it is a special seasoned brew.

"Even monkeys fall from trees." Katai is no perfect man. He will make mistakes and miscalculations and because of this, bad things might come of it. On the battlefield he may be distracted by any number of things. His sense of honor and duty may pit him against his superiors or fellow members of the Gotei Thirteen.

Likes:
Flower, Bird, Wind, and Moon. Katai enjoys the beauties of Nature as she paints them, in the living world and Seireitei. Frequently he will write poems about his appreciation for the natural ways and beauty around him.

Conquer, but don't triumph Being an honorable warrior, or believing himself to be such, Katai does not wish to obliterate his enemy or adversary in any conflict, but he does wish to defeat them. This does not extend to Hollows for the most of them will surely only strive to hurt him, and if not him others. Which is against the law.
Dislikes:
"One who chases after two hares won't catch even one. " There is nothing more irritable to Katai than someone who insists on trying to multitask when it is painfully obvious that they cannot manage to do so. It creates more chaos and only more problems and possible supplementary tasks to make up and account for the two previous tasks now sullied. Doing too much and showing too little.

"Gold coins to a cat. " Committing to useless tasks or gestures. This mismanagement of time could be used for more enduring endeavors instead.

"Fish among cats.." Naturally on guard is one thing, but when Katai is guarded for long periods of time he becomes a bit irritable if only in demeanor. He doesn't mean to be so 'uptight' but without relaxation, it can only be expected for someone to become wound tight.

Favorite Food: Yamagata hiyashi ramen, Katai's favorite food is relatively easy to make and great for the summer time.

Zanpakuto Name: Shinseki (Lit. Relative)
Sealed Description: When sealed, Shinseki appears to be a normal Katana with black wrapping of the hilt and an iron Tsuba. Though the blade appears to be dinged and worn. It's sharpness and alacrity for battle cannot be discerned from it's appearance.
Spirit Form Description: In it's unreleased form, Shinseki appears as an androgynous like figure, though leaning towards the male spectrum of broad shoulders and a square chin. There are no facial features and 'he' wears a white Kimono with the Ying Yang symbol emblazoned on it's back.The collar of his kimono is reversed from right over left to left over right. Implying that he is dead. A bamboo hat sits atop his head which is bald, laking hair. The demeanor of sealed Shinseki is that of a wise Kensei (Sword Saint) from war's past. Offering keen advice and insight and also good poetry topics.
Shi-Kai: When the proverb, Kishi kaisei (Wake from death and return to Life) Shinseki, is spoken in any volume of voice the blade undergoes a radical transformation of appearance. No longer is it dinged and worn from any battles and ill maintenance, but is polished and sharpened to forged perfection, The blade also elongates ten more centimeters and becomes more of a Tachi than a simple katana's sixty centimeters. The tsuba is a polished black metal and the wrappings are a royal red. Matching the color of the ribbons on Katai's shoulders.

Ability 1 - Shō Mai (Lit. Thrust Dance) - Shinseki is a patient yet reserved teacher, and the first of it's abilities Katai learned was the ability to properly defend himself if simple zanjutsu was no longer an option. This ability drains Katai's energy reserves however, since it is hado channeled through his Zanpakutō. Usually this ability is used in quick succession of itself, sending blasts or waves of energy that 'push' in according to the blade of his swords movement. (stabbing, slashing, hacking, etc)

Abilities/Special Training: In the Spirit Society, Katai applied his living world training in Kenjutsu to his Zanjutsu training. His favored style of combat is similar to Battōjutsu which deals specifically with the rapid drawing and sheathing of a sword. And makes heavy demonstration of Hitotsume: Nadegiri (The First: Killing Stroke). Most of his other abilities are pretty average, there is nothing spectacular about his Shunpo ability nor his affinities for Kido. Along with his level of swordsmanship, he restricts his combat style to what he refers to as 'marks of engagement'. A system of directions for almost any close quartered combat situation in which drawing his sword would be warranted.

However, if he shouldn't have need to draw his Zanpukato then Katai will resort to his knowledge of Hakudo, hand to hand combat, of which he is a fairly skilled practitioner of. Without knowledge of hakudo how could he be such a well versed Zanjutsu disciple? It is all related.

Katai has no problem casting kido, though he rarely uses Hado, which is what he prefers since it can be directly applied to offensive techniques.
Biography:
Childhood in Rukongai/Seireitei

Katai was sent to the Soul Society in 1490 AD, after being felled by the warfare in an ever restless Japan. A musketeer had killed him in the battle between Hojo and the forces within Horigoe Castle. He received a ticket that took him towards one of the outer districts in West Rukongai. Upon arriving he was lost in West Rukon district 63. There was little to find of anyone he knew or recognized from life and the district was lawless or just lacking order. Though this was understandable as his family in the living world had orphaned him at a young age to a Monastery of Monks who took care of him until he was of appropriate age to leave on his own. As a young man with no where to go, he was taken in by an aged couple who claimed to have no children of their own and would like some help around their home in the outskirts of the Rukon. He stayed with them and did menial labor that they could not do for some time. He then found an occupation in tending the fields that food crops. This helped bring in money to his adoptive family, a humbling life though he was easily angered by how uncontrolled the further out from Seireitei one traveled. As if the law meant nothing.

Shinigami Academy Years

It wasn't long before the wizened man and woman who called Katai their son now took notice of the young man's irritability and his adoptive father asked Katai one morning before he took to the fields that he should make a man out of himself and take the entrance exam. The deadline was approaching and if Katai had became a Shinigami it would make them both proud and possibly cheer Katai up. The young man refused to leave them alone again, murderers and outlaws were rampant enough in the fields and forest and his conscious would weigh heavily on him if anything happened and he couldn't help them as he had been doing. Though, nothing ventured and nothing gained. His parents urged him to at least take the exam, and so he did. On his first try at the start of the academic year he aced the entrance exam with high scores. Much to his own chagrin at being accepted it had made his family proud and he bid them goodbye for the duration of his training at the Academy. He was an excellent student when it came to martial skill in Zanjutsu, deft movement and slight of hand gave him an edge when sparring with his fellow schoolmates. Though he was no expert or prodigy at Kido, he preferred to use Hado instead of Bakudou despite his more than Academic knowledge of Bakudou techniques. However, he excelled in the calligraphy and Haiku classes that were taught quite easily. Even having a tapestry he wrote a haiku on with his calligraphy be put onto the wall of the haiku corridor. What a tasteful achievement.

Current Timeline.

Upon graduation only after the full term of six years, Katai emerged a full fledged Shinigami with interest in the Second Division of the Gotei 13. Though his parents could not be found at the graduation ceremony Katai was sure they would receive him once he returned home. Though much to his surprise only his elderly mother remained as his father had passed two years prior and the messenger that had been dispatched to tell him had apparently not told him. Saddened by this, Katai stayed with her that night and awoke to find her dead, having passed in her sleep. After peforming a solemn burial ceremony that morning, he returned to the Seireitei to petition join the Second Division since the Onmitsukidō was one of his goals to join as well if his fate allowed it.

Roleplay Example:

"Every married woman is not a wife Tomagachi..best remember that." Katai said as he looked down into his saucer cup of rice sake. It was warm and it's heat transferred through the porcelain of the cup into his drinking hand, his left. He was speaking to a member of the Ninth Division at the reception of another Shinigami's wedding ceremony. The incredulous man had married a beautiful woman of the Fourth Division's sixth Relief team. An admirable occupation, but also an excuse for this man's wife to laud over 'injured' patients in a most intimate fashion.

"But, Ryuusei-san, don't you think she is just doing her job admirably?" Katai only scoffed, almost coughed up his sake. The nerve!. His dark eyes looked to the concerned man and gave him an amicable smile.

"Don't listen to me, I'm just a drunk fool." Ignorance was buddha. He wouldn't ruin the happy day that was taking place between two souls. Even if they were destined for ruin in the future. With that, the young man took his leave of the reception. Bidding adieu to Tomagachi and presenting the wedded couple with his gift of Spring Sake, he bowed to them and left. Closing the sliding door behind him as he let out a delicate sigh. The familiar warmness behind his ears and cresting the top of his nose told him the Sake was taking hold now. "I could write..one thousand poems." He muttered as he walked down the wooden steps into the streets of the North Rukongai district twelve. This establishment was an excellent choice to hold the reception, it was large and sported a zen garden for decoration. The groom surely had good taste despite spoiling his wife who was already unfaithful. The Shinigami continued onwards, the sun was setting and the view of the various silhouettes of the buildings was beautiful. "Such is natures gaze, golden and crisp against the faces of warriors eternal..." He closed his eyes, a breeze caught him mid stride, allowing his shoulder tied ribbons to waver and wave. It was a beautify evening indeed.

"I think I'll go meditate for a bit...yes."

I am fine with Vice Captain seat, I wasn't looking to become too powerful without character development and such.
