I don't really remember him getting beat up except kind of by Lyon during the cursed island part... plus during the Nirvana and the Tenroujima part where everyone else also gets beat up... xp

He's been kicking some serious a** in the current arc, if you've been reading the translations.
I see where you're getting it from though, it's been a long time coming for Gray to get some badass moments. He's conceptually cool (no pun intended), but Mashima hasn't given him much love until now.

Personally, I think Gray is plenty badass, but the manga is always going to focus mainly on Natsu and Lucy, because they are the main characters. But that's purely my opinion.
