Crissy stood in front of me in the line, I knew it was her because of the long black hair draped over her shoulders covering part of her black dress. She always wore dark clothing and carried a book, I didn't know why at the time. I stepped forward after she left and grabbed my food. She was sitting in the corner where she always sat, and I moved to sit on the other side of the room so I could watch her without her noticing me. That is when the football captain walked over to her table and sat down. 'What is he doing?' I asked myself as I sat down.
She ignored him as she read and ate her food, but he continued to try and talk to her. Finally he got angry and grabbed her book. He ripped out the pages as I ran across the room and she began to cry. My fist hit him in the jaw and he slammed into the wall with the force of the punch. I helped her pick up the pages of the book and almost got hit by the jock who had finally recovered. I slapped his hand away and handed her the book pages. He swung at me again, but this time I caught it in the gut. I dropped to my hands and knees gasping to get air back into my lungs.
"You're gonna pay for hitting me." he said kicking me in the side. He kicked again but I caught his leg between my arms and legs. I twisted my body and he fell onto his side, slightly catching his fall. I immediately got onto his chest and pinned his arms with my knees. I punched him in the face till he stopped struggling, then I got off and walked away the gathered crowd moving aside to get out of my way.
The bathroom smelled of urine as I washed my hands and grimaced at the pain the cuts on my knuckles caused. I turned to leave as the principal came into to room.
"Terry, you need to come with me." she said as she stopped and looked at me. I followed her to the office and sat down as she tried figure out what had happened. I recounted it for her and when I was finished she suspended me for it. Those three days were agony for me, how was Crissy doing? Was she changed by the ordeal? Or had she simply forgotten about it like she seemed to do about everything else? My picture of her was old but I didn't care. I stroked her face and kissed it regularly.
The day I came back to school I was greeted by pats on the back and chorus' of 'Thank you'. It wasn't until later that I found out I had sent him to the hospital, they didn't like him. Crissy ignored me as usual, but I no longer followed her around instead I walked beside her. It took a couple of days for the talk to die down, but when it did we started to talk. She had been depressed because of her parents getting divorced and her brother dieing. It didn't help that Thomas, the football jerk, wouldn't leave her alone. Me defending her is what caused her to stop planning on committing suicide. We became friends and soon I hoped to be able to go on a date with her. It was when we were sitting by the lake, studying, when I finally asked her. She was shocked, to say the least, and sat for several minuets before she replied.
"I'm sorry, but I like someone else." she said as she prepared to leave, uncomfortable with the situation. My body seemed to move faster than my mind as I leaped at her and pulled my scarf around her neck. After she stopped struggling I moved her to be leaning on the tree nearby and I sat down next to her. I talked for a while before finally kissing her and then moving over to the spot I had planned on going all the way with her, but refused to do now that she was dead. I covered her with the blanket that we had been sitting on and headed home.
It wasn't until the next day after school that I realized what I had done, when the cops came by and asked me about when I had last seen her. I told them I had last seen her at the lake, and that we had been studying. They thanked me and then left, so I went to bed. It was Saturday morning when they finally brought me in for questioning. They said they had found my scarf around her neck, and I replied that I had left it with her to keep her warmer because she was gonna be staying there longer. I lied and said that she had been fine when I left. When they finally released me I returned home and pulled up the loose floorboard in the corner of my room. A small metal box held the picture I was getting, a picture of us sitting together.
Fear froze me in place when it began to move, black tendrils extending outward to a spot on the ground. As the tendrils reached the spot they combined and grew upward into the general shape of a person. Suddenly they contracted and formed HER. She stood, her black hair draped over her shoulders , a red line around her neck. She opened her arms to me and I walked over to her, and we hugged as a darkness enveloped us and pulled us back into the picture.
Prelude:
Terry was found laying face down on the ground holding a picture, with a slash in each of her wrists. "She caused this." was written next to the body in her own blood.
