Why are cats scooping food? Is it because they don't like their food or because they're playing with their food? Hmmm... Not really!
The Size of The Bowl
Cats hate it when their whiskers touch the side of the bowl. But they also want to be able to look around while they are eating. So a bowl with big edges is a no-no! So you might try using a wider, shallower bowl to feed out of, or use a plate. Some cats don’t like the smell of plastic, and prefer to eat from metal or ceramic dishes.
Bored
He might be bored. Cats like to hunt and if they can’t stalk and hunt for real, a lot of energy is left over, and he might be trying to make mealtime more interesting as dinner just appears in his bowl. Try playing with him before dinnertime. Or feed him with a food-maze.
Burrying Food
This might be an instinctive behavior to keep himself and his food supply safe like big cats in the wild do. Digging and scratching around food dishes is also a way to mark the food as his, because the scratching and digging puts his scent around his dishes.
Free-feeding.
Stahp, stahp right there! Free-feeding, no, bad! Switch your cat to a feeding-schedule. feed him in a smaller room or contained area. After 20 minutes or so, take the food away until the next mealtime to make your cat get used to it. Feed the amount it needs, not the amount it wants.
Dirty
You might want to clean the bowls on a daily base and don’t leave cat food out for too long. Or he doesn’t like the food your giving your cat. If other tips don’t work, I would try out a different kind of food.
