As time passes we begin to forget. Our memories slowly fade away. I tried so hard not to forget you. But it was so long ago and now I can't even remember your name. But I know something about you. I remember the promise you made me. Those many years ago. That I will hold onto. Until the bitter end.

A typical story of forbidden love. Kaoru was born into the royal family and since birth was declared a prince and destined to be king. [X] was born into a commoner family and had been working since he was young. His dream was to become a royal knight. [X]'s father was an architect, and his mother was a seamstress. Pretty respectable jobs. In the kingdom the common folk were always respected and treated fairly by the nobles. But they were still not allowed to mingle and mix. But Kaoru and [X] became friends when they were young. And since no other noble had children his age at the time his parents allowed the two to play.

Two boys grew up together. But when he turned 13, [X] was sent away to a sort of military school. It was his dream after all to become a soldier. Kaoru was left alone then. He only had his memories and the promise [X] had made. He promised that when he became a knight he would return and would always be by his side. But time passed. Too much time. Kaoru's memories sadly began to fade. He became very ill and his mind was slowly slipping. But he held onto that promise even if he had forgotten who had made it.

And then [X] returned. When he was twenty five years old. [X] had not forgotten his friend. At the time his father was called to work on building the new temple dedicated to the kingdom's guardian spirit and all the elemental gods. [X] was visiting his father there when Kaoru was brought there to bring the month's pay for the workers. The two are face to face but [X] knows something is wrong. Kaoru says nothing to him. But why? The young prince who is now twenty one seems different. Impatient and indifferent. Cold and uncaring. Could it be that he no longer cares for his old friend? No. It is simply that he has forgotten who he is. So what can [X] do?

It must have been a long week. Kaoru could feel his body's weakness. Or perhaps his illness was simply getting worse. At this point he could not recall which it must be. He would see his doctor every Monday and then again on Fridays. Always in the morning after breakfast. His parents had been told the illness would remain as it was and Kaoru would only deal with what he had. He would at times tire easily. That was mostly in the summer months. And his memories would fade quickly unless at rare times were seen as important.

Kaoru mostly kept to himself now. His parents wanted now to find a princess he could marry. But each time they brought it up Kaoru would simply refuse. The idea was silly. No woman would want a sickly husband. And definitely not want him if he could not give them children which was a flaw he had from the very beginning. It took him hours to simply get ready in the morning. And this particular morning he felt extremely exhausted without so much as knowing why. But finally when he was done he went to collect the money he was totake with him and then was helped into the carriage by a guard and then was taken away. A few minutes and they were in town among the common folk. Kaoru was not allowed to stop wherever he so leased. He was taken to deliver the pay for the workers to the temple. And then he would be taken back to the castle. Kaoru didn't mind because he knew the lead architect well. A well respected man in the town who had been serving the royal family loyally for years. But there was more of a connection between them. Involving a third person. The one who Kaoru for many years could not recall.

Coric laughed wheezily at the bear hug his father gave him, almost wishing he'd kept his armor on. Even after a twelve year absence, his father seemed just as strong as ever, even if the man had more gray in his hair than the knight remembered. "Dad, please," he laughed, finally getting released, "I'm not a kid anymore." But, even then, it was nice. Coric was still dirty from travel, horse ted up out front with his supplies. But when he'd heard his father was in the mist of helping construct a massive temple, he'd just had to come. And ever of it was unfinished right now, Coric couldn't help but be impressed. His dad really did have a knack for grand things. "How long have you been working on this?" the young knight asked, looking around as other were still busy and working.

"Oh, about ten years now," his father said, looking around proudly. "And it's not that far from completion. Maybe a year or so more ..."

Grinning, Coric tried wiping some of the dirt off of his travel cotton clothing, chain mail underneath. Even on the main roads, it was best to stay prepared. Especially since he'd been traveling alone. But the stick of horse sweat was still thick on him, along with his own. His mother was going to have his hide if he went home without getting himself at least a little more decent first. Luckily, his dad was covered in dust himself, so there was no worry about offending the man.

Though, before they could actually talk, Coric heard a yell from the arch where the front doors were going to be. "The prince is here!!"

At first, the knight looked dumbstruck. Then ... he grinned. Well, looked like he would be able to see his friend again. And soon. Coric couldn't help but remember the short blond who'd been his partner in crime when he'd just been a young boy, helping his dad in renovating the dining hall in the palace. A ... very special friend, who he'd made an important promise to.

But Coric blinked when ... a very different sort of person walked in, his father walking forward to collect the month's pay for his men, most everyone else stopping a moment to bow politely. This was their prince after all, their to-be king and ruler. But Coric didn't bow, busy comparing the light, sunny memories he had to ... The Prince.

Kaoru slowly made his way over to them. By either side walked two knights wearing glittering golden armor and the symbolic crest of the royal family. These two carried large claymores which were mounted on their backs and in their hands were large shields which were also adorned with the crest of the royal family. Kaoru was not to walk a step behind nor a step ahead of them. That's how it was said to be and how it now was. The two guards were two twins who had been brought to the kingdom and selected for the task of guarding they prince when he was out of the castle. They stopped a few feet away from the workers and Kaoru held the bag of gold coins for Coric's father to take.

The architect took the bag with a polite bow, Coric giving the prince a stare from behind his dad. Sort-of trying to get the prince's attention just a little. The knight was still a little confused with how fragile the other male had gotten (at least appearance-wise, along with tired-looking) but Coric also wanted to see the look on the other's face when the blond realized he was finally back. Dang, it had taken a while, but Coric was sure it was worth it.

"Thank-you," his father said, as was custom, "my prince."

Kaoru gave a slight nod. "You have been doing an excellent job with the temple,"he said in a low, soft voice. " My father has commented on how pleased he is with the work as well."Certainly it did take a while but Kaoru finally noticed how the other male was looking at him. It seemed odd. His two guards were already suspicious of him. And of course Kaoru did not recognize the other at all so he simply ignored him. "Well anyway I must be going now,"he continued. "Excuse me now." And that was all. He turned and they left walking back to the carriage at the same pace as they had come. He was helped inside and the door was closed. With a crack of his whip the driver got the horses moving again and they rode off.

"...?" Coric ... didn't know what to make of the blank look Kaoru gave him. The redhead hadn't paid any mind to the guards, seeing as he hadn't seen then around when he was a kid here. The twins had probably finished proper training when Kaoru had been allowed out of the palace. Coric himself had left for his own training before the young prince had even been allowed outside of the protective castle gates. But he still didn't understand. It wasn't until the prince was leaving, carriage drawing away, that Coric realized ... this wasn't some sort of joke. There had been no sign of recognition, none at all. Not even a moment of possible familiarity. Had ... had the prince ... not even recognized him?

The knight walked to the archway, looking down the dirt road a few moments at the back of the receding carriage, shaking his head at himself. That ... that ... "That p***k," Coric snarled to himself, marching over to his horse. He wanted to ride directly to the palace, angry and hurt and demanding the other take a real good look at him, when he realized ... he still looked and smelled very much like any vagabond out of the woods. Clearly, a bath was in order fist. And he would put on his best armor, seeing as he'd planned to try getting a position guarding at the king's castle when he'd returned anyway. Being able to fight was well and good, but he still had to earn his keep. He had some coin from a few guard jobs he'd done all along the way home ... but not much. He'd bought his horse and armor himself, after all, schooling paid thanks to his both-working parents.

Coric sighed to himself, and lightly patted the brown gelding's nose before going back to tell his father he was heading home, the architect already handing out coin amongst the gathered workers.

((One quick question~ Is Kaoru's illness a commonly-known thing, or is it something just the royal family and their closest attendants know? I want to know if Coric's family would know why Kaoru forgot him or not))

((It's inherited. It comes from his mother's side of the family. His great grandmother who was queen at one point and left to rule alone for years had it was known by everyone. Mostly the older people would know about it.))

Kaoru kept a blank look as he always had. he was quiet all throughout the ride back and when the carriage stopped and he was back behind protective walls he stepped out and walked back inside. He went directly to his room to lie down. He soon was able to fall asleep and all the servants knew to leave him alone and let his parents know he was resting.

Since the appearance of the illness all of the citizens learned to be attentive of their prince. This was a double edged blade. It was good because he always had people looking out for him but bad because no one would leave him alone. Kaoru often distanced himself from others and was alone thinking and trying his hardest to remember things that had seemed to be so easily forgotten.

Coric arrived home in good time, only having time to stable his horse before he heard his petite mother tapping her foot from the small stable's entrance. Being part of the middle class, Coric's parents were able to afford stabling the two thick cart horses his father owned for helping fetch building materials himself, and saving on some of the cost delivery would otherwise take. But for now the redheaded male smiled sheepishly at his mother, only to be shooed off to the well to get himself cleaner before even thinking of setting foot in the house. And after that he caught up with her ... spoke about how his old friend hadn't even recognized him ... and got trapped into staying for lunch with her before getting on.

Needless to say, Coric went to the castle much later in the day than he'd planned, feeling a little down at something his mother had told him. "Well Coric, you know how important he is. And he was only nine when you left. A little play buddy really doesn't matter much in the scheme of things hun--"

"Well, then I'll just have to remind him just who I am," Coric told himself and his horse as he rode her down the street towards the palace gates, plate armor on above his cloth clothing and chain mail now, but his helmet still in a saddle bag. He didn't want to look too threatening, after all. Just like any other respectable fighter his age. Coric smiled, waving to the gate guards, and dismounted his gelding to approach on foot, sword sheathed and attached to the saddle instead of to him. It wasn't the biggest of blades, but its lighter weight felt right in his hands. "Hey! I'm Coric. Coric Smith," he said, stopping with his horse's bridle in hand. "Son of David Smith, the architect. I was hoping to get a job. Any guard positions open?" He couldn't just ask to be part of the prince's guard first off, he knew that. And it would be more than a little insane to demand to see the prince, even if he had known the blond once upon a time. No.

Coric was going to work his way up the ranks, deserve the position on the royal guard, and then tell Kaoru face-to-face that he'd kept his promise. That would definitely jog the other's memory and show him! ... Right?

Well, at least he might be in time for a guard's dinner if he was let in.

One of the guards who was at a high tower looking down smiled at him knowing who he was. The man had worked with his father years back when Coric was still a boy. He waved at him and was about to open the gate before he was stopped by the screams of one of the golden armored knights. One of the twins stepped forth but gave no order to open the gates. The knight removed the helmet and with ebony hair being released and cascading over the shoulders revealed the knight was in fact a woman.

"What is it you've come here for now boy? I recognize you from this morning. You are the one who was staring at our prince in a strange manner." She kept a serious look on her face though she did not look angry or threatening. Good grooming and advanced training were apparent in her appearance and gestures. She was a master in her trade as was her twin brother who was not present at the moment.

Coric smiled, seeing the wave. He couldn't see the other up high too well, but he did vaguely recognize the face. Someone who'd worked with his dad. The redhead was just about to thank his lucky stars when a voice yelled out for the gates to stay closed. "..." He held back the urge to curse his unlucky stars until he was sure he was locked out. But, for now, he smiled as best he could at the raven haired woman with the big-a** sword. Ah ... right. He knew that armor, from earlier. She was one of the two human guards that had been on either side of Kauro. Therefore, it was of the highest importance to not get on her bad side. And not just because there was a high possibility of kicking his butt from one side of the kingdom to the other. Girl or not. Coric at least had the training to know when he was outmatched, gender regardless. He'd met enough enough witty and deadly female bandits on the long way home to get cocky, pardon the pun.

That didn't mean he wouldn't try his darnest to put her and the other guy out of a job though. He had made a promise, and he intended to keep it, even if the other hadn't realized he was back in town yet.

"I'm sorry, was my manner strange?" Coric called up, hands cupped to help give his words clarity to those he was talking to. "I was simply surprised he did not recognize me. Though, now thinking upon it, I have been gone a long while. I'm Coric, son of David and Kathrine Smith. I was hoping there might be an open place among the palace guard I might fill."

The woman observed him for a moment and then signaled the guard to open the gates enough for Coric to get in. Once he was in he was right in front of her she spoke again. "We always have jobs open for guards and soldiers. But you have to speak to the captain for that and pass a test which is given on an assigned day. You may return tomorrow and speak with him. But I am guessing now that you still wish to speak to the young prince? If you say you know him then I will not doubt it. But he mentioned nothing about knowing you. Therefore what am I to think?"
