Hi, I was recently watching a program about Amy Allen, who can both see spirits, and communicate with them. At the end of researching a house, she told the owner to seal the house with smudging, and also to surround the house with black salt in order to be safe from a particular.... spiritual critter/thing/(what do you call it?@!)

So, since throwing salt over your shoulder is a very old tradition (that i also don't understand), can you tell me the uses for white salt and black salt, and why/where those traditions come from?

Thanks!!!!

If I recall black salt comes from voodoo and is used generally in either hexing or (at least with Pagans) protection. Black salt is made with soot, burnt herbs, and ash.

White salt, on the other hand, is used for both purifying and protection. I see the purifying aspect in various Pagan groups, but it dates back to ancient times (the Ancient Egyptians used natron, a type of salt, for purifying as an example). That said, not every Pagan sect uses salt for such purposes.

Forgot to add this, but white salt also represents the earth in some Western Esoteric practices and Wicca. Some will ingest white salt after a ritual in order to ground. I highly advise against ingesting black salt unless it's actual black salt (which will come from Hawaii, India, and I can't remember where else). That type of salt is sold in specialty cooking stores.

BLACK SALT
SpiritLady Yve

Black salt is sometimes called Sal Negro, Witches’ Salt, Drive Away Salt, Voodoo Salt or Santeria Salt.

It can be used for driving away evil or negative energies, it can be added to war water.

You can sprinkle it in the doorways and corners of a room or business to drive away negativity or give you protection against bad neighbors
or co-workers. Sprinkle it around your property or garden for protection.

It can be used to cast circles of strong protection.

Black salt has also been traditionally used in removing hexes and jinxes.

A PERFECT ingredient for filling 'Binding Poppets' for a powerful outcome.

Place a black candle in a pile of black salt for Samhain Remembrance rituals, sprinkle Ouiji Boards with Black Salt before use.

In ancient times it was one of the most important goods, used as currency, medicine and obviously in cooking and preserving. The Romans regarded it so highly that they even made a massive road, the longest in its time just to transport it from sea to city.

So how do you make black salt? There are several different ways, which include mixing 2 parts salt to 1 part of another substance; cast iron scrapings, ash from a fire place, charcoal, black pepper or black dye are the most often used.

For my mix, I used the scrapings from my cast iron cauldron, which include a bit of cast iron, a bit of ash from burning things, and a bit of charcoal. In fact, I intentionally burned some herbs of protection on a self-lighting charcoal the day before I made my black salt so that I’d have a nice mix in my cauldron to use – and boost up the protective energies of my salt via the herbs.

I used an old spoon to scrape up all the particles
I got quite a decent amount of ash and scrapings. I removed most of the really big chunks of unburned matter.
Into my mortar went the scrapings and twice as much salt for a good mixing and crushing.
While I did this, I concentrated on protective energies. Then into a labeled jar!

It doesn’t make a huge amount. This batch I’ll save for using when I really need it.

Using what I had in my cauldron, created with the intention of protection, really felt like a good way to make black salt for me.

I have to say, this little jar of black salt does give me a feeling of having something powerful in my cupboard to work with! I like the idea of having it on hand for when I need it. You just never know.

This is how I make my black salt as well, I use it mainly for protection.

First off, I want to say thank you guys for the amazing information here!!!

I have a question though, I usually use my black salt for rituals during the new moon and/or dark moon. Am I using it wrong? idk why but I was drawn to use it during these times as well as for banishing spells and spells for new beginnings (I know, different things. But I'm a weird person lol)

It's the first I've heard of it, but it makes sense to me.

As the witch who taught me says, do what feels right for you, there are no hard and fast rules for anything really, I think it all has to do with your intent and what you want to use it for smile

I have used it before and use it generally in charms for protection from negative entities of the spiritual realm.
