I think it's awesome that Dawnguard allows you to make arrows. But while you can craft other weapons - swords, daggers, axes - and armor, you can't make staffs! You have to depend on finding them. And when you find them, they're already enchanted with a certain type of magic; you can't enchant it with whatever you want it to do.

I have a 'white mage'-type character that specializes in restoration magic. I would *love* to enchant him with a healing staff. I've never been able to find one in his game, though I've happened upon them with other characters. I really, really wish you could make and enchant staffs yourself!

And just imagine if you could enchant a staff with two spells! I'd give it Grand Healing for myself and Fire Storm for my enemies! -cackle-

It would be cool if you could make your own staves, like being able to find a staff somewhere like you did in Oblivion and then enchanting it with what you want. Or just go out into the woods and find a random long stick. It kind of is a rip that you can't already make your own staves, since you can enchant other weapons.

I do think that you should be able to create a staff. Not being able to limits mage characters somewhat.

Greetings;

Well, in all fairness, you can kinda make your own staffs, though you are limited as to what. The antranoch forge has the ability to make you, provided you have the ingredients and other items necessary, staffs to summon fire, frost and storm antranochs, as I recall. Possibly other elementally based staffs too. Maybe, never have bothered with it myself, but still. When I level up I always just summon a couple of dremora lords to back me up. Same reason I never bother with a companion.

Thank you...

Realistically, they couldn't really add a staff creation mechanism. Not only for the lore of the game (how could an outsider of the Mage's Guild/College possibly know our most valued secrets of staff creating!?), but because of practicality. They know that a mage being able to create his own staff would have some glitching, like smithing once did, and it would definitely overpower most mage builds to the point of it being nearly unfair. The fact that you have to scavenge for the staff that you want, typically tempers staff ability with experience and knowledge. It's good the way it is, I think. Sure, creating staffs would be "fun" but it would certainly unbalance the game.

Hm, I don't think so. How is it different from creating any other enchanted weapon? One of my guys is at level 60 and essentially a god anyway with his one-handed perk tree filled.

Also, I've played 400 hours or more and not once have I found any type of healing staff. I only know they exist because my wife picked one up in her game. I was trying to swing my character the 'white mage' way and would love a healing staff of some sort. Just can't find one.

Can't say I agree that mages alone should have the ability to make the staffs either. Yeah, I think it would have made more sense and I would have preferred that certain character classes would be unable to wield magic. Hell, I'd keep that an ability strictly related to elves if possible. But since you can mix and match any skill set to any race and character, you can't really say that in Skyrim only mages should have the knowledge of making a staff. I don't like that about the game myself, but that's how they chose to do it. I do prefer the kind of system where you pick warrior/mage/archer or something like that, but that's not how Skyrim works.

Neat! I haven't seen that feature yet. I'm kind of ignoring the main story to just check out the island.

Staff creation would, in theory be simple, modders have done similar things, I think what makes anything lacking when it comes to weapon enchantments is that there seems to be fewer options then in Oblivion and fewer still compared to random, in game items.
