The very word calls up images of grand gala's and high society events. The life is glamorous and extravagant. Nobles can have whatever they want, without as much responsibility as a King or Queen, their rule applying only to their own region. However, none of the perks of this lifestyle appeal to one young Noble girl. She's found the ridiculous dances and garden parties she's forced to suffer through to bore her, the mindless chatter from her peers annoying, and the many advances made to her from snobbish Nobles' sons unwanted. Her few activities of enjoyment, which included archery, swordplay, and falconry, have since been mastered and she's found her only release to now be her many, many books, into which she pours herself. The ideas of high-flying adventure, various treasures and mysterious creatures are what she dreams about as she stands and pretends to listen to other Noble girls' clucking. Likewise, the very word calls up images of ships sailing among crashing waves, bloody battles, and gleaming treasure. All of the above can be spoken for by the crewmen of The Screaming Mermaid, a ship notorious for it's attack, particularly against any official vessel. Much of the King's gold has been taken by the Captain of The Screaming Mermaid, due to his targeting of any high society ship known to be in the area. His hate for the King, and his dogs, is said to stem from their capture of his mother when he was just a child, whom they ended up hanging for not revealing the whereabouts of his father, a known pirate. In his years at sea, he's never once been captured and held, the few times they have caught him leading to him slipping away one way or another. This has led to rumors of he and his crew being in alliance with true mermaids for various jewels procured in their raids in exchange for great amounts of luck. But those are just rumors...right?NOW:Now, as the Noble girl finds out her parents have given her hand in marriage to a man who is twice her own age, the Captain pulls into the docks in small dinghies, looking to replenish his now diminished crew after a particularly nasty squabble with a few of the King's ships. This will be where the two shall meet, leading into the story of a young girl's dangerous plight for a new and exciting life as she tries to keep her true identity secret and thus keep her life, and the Captain's goal to uncover this strange new boy's secrets while trying to sort out his strange pull towards him while doing his best to keep the youngster from meeting the same fate as so many others aboard his ship have met: Death by the end of a sword.

This has led her to run off every chance she’s gotten, even if it was only ever for a few hours. This time however, it’s different. I will not follow you, my bird, I will not follow you. I would not breathe a word, my bird, To bring thee here anew.
"Arianna...?" The girls mother said, trying to bring her out of her shock. "My dear, are you alright?" She asked, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Lord Lambrick!?" Arianna finally said, pushing her mothers hand away and glaring at her father. "Father, he's literally twice my age!" she exclaimed. "That may be," her father said "but he's got a great deal of land and you will be comfortable. You are nineteen Arianna, you should have been married four years ago but you made that rather difficult. Now, you will marry him within the month and should begin preparing yourself." he said, and with that he took his wife by the shoulders and steered her away, leaving their daughter to work over what she'd just been told.
An hour later, she was doing just what her father had suggested, preparing herself. However, in lieu of picking a hairstyle and makeup with her handmaiden, she was packing a bag with essentials, including daggers, her saber rather than her rapier, a change of clothes, and some books. She was currently wearing the clothes of the gardener's boy and she'd ripped up a sheet to bind her chest, giving her a flat chest. The gardener's boy had known for a time now that she tended to sneak out and was sympathetic, so as he'd developed muscles and grew taller, he'd given her his old clothes. Finally she stood before her mirror with a dagger in her hand and her hair tied back in a messy ponytail. Her hair was extremely long and was always something she'd prided herself in. In that way she supposed she was like the other girls. But now, she needed to get rid of it. No women were ever said to go on great adventures, they were always the ones being saved. She took a breath, closed her eyes, and heard the dagger whisper through her thick hair and felt it fall against her neck. She opened her eyes slowly and let herself get used to her hair before evening it out some with scissors and hoisting her bag up. She picked up her quiver, the bow tucked inside, and strapped it across her back as well before going to the window. She let out a simple four note whistle and soon, from the darkening sky a peregrine falcon descended to land on her arm. She was used to handling him without her protective leather and the scratches she got from his claws no longer bothered her as he landed on her arm. "Are you ready Asgeirr?" She asked, stroking the birds plumage. "We're going on an adventure." She sent him off, knowing he'd stay with her, and sneaked out. It wasn't hard now, the help knew Arianna locked herself in her room early, and dressed the way she was now, no one gave her a second glance. Still, she breathed a sigh of relief once she made it out the doors and into town without a hitch. She headed then to the skiviest bar she knew. It was far down the coast away from the main docks. Arianna walked carefully, hearing her boots against the wood as she made it to the door. She looked up to make sure Asgeirr was still circling above, before entering, keeping her belonging's close to her body. I love the free in thee, my bird, The lure of freedom drew; The light you fly toward, my bird, I fly with thee unto.

Nathaniel "Nathan" Vane Blue-green sea water gently pushed a large, beautiful pirate ship through the water, aided only by a gently sea breeze and the occasional push of the oars. Behind the wheel stood a fairly tall blueish haired, violet eyed man, the top three buttons of his shirt undone to capture more of the breeze. The ship was sailing in familiar waters. The same waters that the young captain had grown used to as a novice pirate, yet also the same waters that he wished to avoid as much as possible. Only a week ago, the crew of this notorious pirate ship had been plentiful, their numbers high and unlikely to fall. But, then the ran into some trouble with one of the king's dog's ships. For once in quite some time, they'd proved to be quite a fight, but had fallen, as did every other ship. Now, their destination was the tavern most popular with pirates, and men seeking new adventures.
Only a little while later, the young captain and a few others were in dinghies, rowing towards the shore. Next to the captain sat a man noticeably older than the captain himself, though only barely. This man was identified as Louie, first mate. He looked up to the captain, his mouth a straight line as he spoke, "Captain, are you sure about this?" The captain, Nathaniel Vane, son of the notorious James Vane, looked at his first mate, his expression similar to that of his first mate's as he said, "Yes. We don't have enough men to stand another attack. We need more men."
The captain of The Screaming Mermaid stared off towards the shore of his old home. "It's good to see you again..." he murmured to himself, a glint of hatred quite obvious behind his eyes. All of the crewmen understood; this was the same reason for his hatred of the king, queen, and the rest of the royals. Murdering an innocent woman, and willing to murder a child, all for information. Disgusting. I'll make my post prettier tomorrow, I'm going to go to bed soon, so yeah...

It wasn't long before Arianna got swept up by a group of sailors. True, they were from a barge and therefore, not exactly what she was looking for, but it wouldn't hurt to be friendly with them at least. However, there was one of the group who simply stared at her and refused to join in what fun they were having. Arianna was content to let him alone, until one of her new drunken friends knocked her into his lap. She smiled and jumped up at once, her hands up. "Sorry ma-"
She was cut off by the sudden need to duck a flying punch aimed for her face. " "Ey Tom! Wassur problem, ya a**!?" one of her new buddies asked, stepping up behind her and therefore blocking her escape. Another punch flew, and it was on. Next thing Arianna knew, she was dodging fists and feet as well as letting a few punches fly herself, aiming mainly for noses and eye sockets. ☠ Nathaniel "Nathan" Vane ☠ Within the hour, Nathan and a few of his crew were on the docks, heading towards the taverns. He'd given the two men remaining in the dinghy an order to stay hidden, and if they heard any word of him and the others being captured to just leave; he'd find a way out of it. He did before.
"Louie, you take James and see if you can find any men in the smaller taverns closest to the docks. I'll take Christopher and check these few taverns over here," Nathan said, watching for a moment as his first mate headed off. Then, he turned on his heel, motioning for his crewman to follow as he headed off to one of the larger taverns nearby.
When they got inside, Nathan was a bit surprised at the sight of a brawl happening. This early? he thought, an eyebrow raised. He walked over to the left side of the building where there was a flight of stairs. It was pretty early for any serious brawls, so he wanted to take a look. When the two men got up the stairs, Nathan stared down at the circle of people, focusing on the men in the middle. This brawl was just like the usual brawl. But, wait... Was that a boy in the middle? I short, scrawny boy holding his own? Nathan leaned forward, his attention focused on the boy, watching as he managed to dodge any serious punches. "He'd make a nice crewman..." he murmured to himself.

I will not follow you, my bird, I will not follow you. I would not breathe a word, my bird, To bring thee here anew.
"ENOUGH!!!" a huge bear of a man behind the bar roared, bring the brawling to a halt. "By the love of me ma, if'n yeh can't hold yer liquor long enough ta make fer a good business night, yeh can all get yer asses outta me tavern er I'll kick 'em out meself!" He shouted so all could hear. His word seemed to hold some weight as the man holding Arianna by her collar, the very same man who'd started it all and was about to receive a punch from the girl himself, snarled and threw her to the ground away from him. As she landed she coughed, the breath knocked out of her, then went to quickly retrieve her belongings before someone else picked her bag up and set to rifling through it. Once she'd found it, as well as her bow and arrows, she found her cap and stuck it on, stuffing her hair up into it again to keep it out of her face. The men she'd been talking to before were nowhere in sight, apparently deciding to either ditch or head to a friendlier tavern. Arianna shrugged then and went to sit at a table, looking for any groups to come in. Those sailors hadn't been what she was looking for anyway. I love the free in thee, my bird, The lure of freedom drew; The light you fly toward, my bird, I fly with thee unto.

☠ Nathaniel "Nathan" Vane ☠ Nathan watched as the brawl continued, though only for a moment. A dissatisfied frown settled on his lips as the bartender broke everything up. With a sigh, the captain stood up straight, adjusting his shirt a bit, his eyes still on the scrawny boy that was in the middle of the brawl.
When he noticed that the boy was leaving, Nathan quickly glanced at Christopher and said, "You look for men that're looking to join a crew. I'll meet you back here in a little while." With that, he walked down the stairs to the first floor where the brawl had initially taken place, then started to follow where the boy had gone. A few minutes later, he was standing a few feet away from a table, watching as the boy sat alone. Ah, what the hell, might as well take a chance.
"You're pretty small to be taking on a guy like that, don't you think?" Nathan said as he walked up to the table, taking a seat across from the boy, a slightly cocky smirk on his lips. "I'm Nathaniel Vane. Captain of The Screaming Mermaid," he said, introducing himself casually. "What's a kid like you doing here in a place like this?"

Arianna looked up at the man as he approached her Does he wanna fight too? she wondered, raising an eyebrow as he spoke. However, when he introduced himself, her eyes lit up. "Lookin' to broaden my horizons, Cap'n!" She said, trying to not appear too eager. "Life here's gotten way too routine." She said, leaning back in her seat and hooking an arm over the back. She looked around, trying to spot anyone who might be in his crew. She'd heard of The Screaming Mermaid from the various soldiers around town. They'd captured the captain a total of two times, and each time it was all they talked about, until he escaped. Then everyone heard the speculations of how he'd done it for weeks and weeks. I love the free in thee, my bird, The lure of freedom drew; The light you fly toward, my bird, I fly with thee unto.

☠ Nathaniel "Nathan" Vane ☠ Nathan nodded, an eyebrow rising. "I see..." he murmured, looking the boy up and down, from what he could see at least. "You don't look like much, but you're pretty tough, from what I saw back there. You think you could make it aboard a ship?" Nathan knew he was an inspiration to several young boys, and even some girls, that came from poor families, or families that had a pirate or two in their family line. He simply figured that that's what this kid was eager about.
Nathan leaned forward, arms folded across each other on the table. "If you think you can make it aboard a ship like mine, then you're welcome aboard. But, if I even have a doubt as to your intentions on my ship, I will not hesitate to throw you off of my ship into the sea," he said, his line a straight line as he finished speaking, and a serious look in his eyes. He'd had a few incidents where some of the kings men acted as pirates, joined his crew, then tried to 'take care' of him. It didn't end too well for them. They all suffered pretty painful deaths.

"Beggin' yer pardon Cap'n, but what could I possibly glean from bamboozlin' ya?" Arianna asked, leaning foreward to mimic his pose, though there was a self-confident smile on her face. "M'dad was a baker, Ma died in childbirth. Ain't got a thing against ya." She said, sitting up again. "As fer spyin' or some such nonsense," she held her arms out to show off her body. "ya gotta have a certain physique to join the royal guad, and I ain't got a physique at all." She said bluntly. Talking to tge men before, she realized her proper dialect wasn't going to cut it here, and talking in such a manner made her voice sound gruffer besides. I love the free in thee, my bird, The lure of freedom drew; The light you fly toward, my bird, I fly with thee unto.

☠ Nathaniel "Nathan" Vane ☠ Nathan chuckled, leaning back in his seat. "Oh, you'd be surprised..." he said, his smug and cocky smirk back. When the boy said his father was a baker and that his mother died in childbirth, he shook his head. "What a pity. Your mother was probably an amazing woman..."
Since he'd been a young boy, before his mother had been murdered by the king and his men, Nathan had received quite an excellent education. Even his father had agreed with it, the few times that he'd seen him. It made it less obvious that he was a pirate's son. And now, now that he was a pirate and captain of one of the most notorious pirate ships, he thought he might as well be known for something other than his pirating skills.
Continuing on with their conversation, Nathan said, "I've had men disguised as several things, just trying to get aboard my ship and capture me, or at least kill me. Black smith's after a mid-life crisis, Mama's boys sick of their mother's constant nagging, maybe even a baker's son..." He sighed, shaking his head again. "Truth is, kid, you can't trust many people out here..."

"I look trustworthy enough?"Arianna asked, looking him up and down the same way he had done her. Honestly, his scrutiny made her nervous. Was her binding tight enough? She was rather clean right now, did that make her suspicious? She was suddenly unsure of herself and reached up to pull her cap down a little further anxiously. ☠ Nathaniel "Nathan" Vane ☠ "Possibly. You look like you can handle yourself, especially for being a baker's kid," Nathan said, eying him. He smiled devilishly when the boy pulled his cap down, seeming anxious. "I don't believe that's the right question, though. Do you feel like I should trust you?" Nathan knew what the answer would probably be, a yes. Of course, that's what they'd want him to do if they were a spy. If.

"If I didn't, I wouldn't be wastin' time talkin' to ya now, would I?" Arianna asked, trying to keep that self confidence up. It hadn't seemed he'd caught anything out of the ordinary with her, but it made her realize just how careful she'd have to be if she did get accepted to his ship. She'd have to keep her binding tight and secret. She'd never be able to take her shirt off while the others did. Well the sun would explain that away easily, but still...
