As was mentioned on The wizards of the coast site, the tag line for the upcoming October set's prerelease events is Pick your Guild. Here's the link resorce.Although The prerelease itself is a long way away, some game stores are getting lists of people who are interested in playing and their top 2 preferred guilds from the five guilds being released. So the question here is: Which guild would you pick (options are below) Azorius (White/Blue) Golgari (Black/Green) Izzet (Blue/Red) Rakdos (Red/Black) Selesenya (Green/White) Feel free to state your favorite Guild here too if it isn't featured in this set. Mine was the Blue/Black House Dimir the first time around.

That's one of the guilds I was thinking of choosing here, but I'd like a better idea of what each of the guilds does first.
However, if each guild gets a differently colored spindown dice I am going to do my best to collect them all.

From the books, Selesnya was hands down the coolest and more powerful guild. On paper I loved izzet, simic, and orzhov. Once I get a better look at the mechanics, their interactions, and what not but I don't think the guilds will be like they once were

I think the Grull clans will have a different mechanic than last time ( have to wait 'till 2013 to find out) but I'm not sure about the other guilds. It is highly likely however that only a few keyword mechanics will be returning. so they will be different.
In terms of the books, I'm not actually sure which guild I liked best though. The Selesenya conclave was pretty cool. but those quiet men were really creepy. and many of the other guilds didn't get as much page time.

There are some mechanical connections to the previous Ravnica block. However, none of the old Ravnica keywords will appear." http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=431651 under characteristics. I figured this should be stated as a reference =P So though they are getting new mechanics, we just have to wait till 2013 to see if it will be connected in some way to getting stronger or dealing more damage if not bloodthirst with a new name

I based my statement about bloodthirst on the answer in this link here ( M13 core design Q&A1) in which the criteria the design team use when choosing returning mechanics for core sets and deduced that Bloodthirst wasn't returning. With all new mechanics it will be interesting to see what the guilds will look like. I'll still probably miss graft, dredge and Hellbent though, they might have been interesting (or incredibly broken) in the same standard as a graveyard block like Innestrad.

If we take both of these into consideration, and Selesnya's Populate (the mechanic on a spoiled card that may or may not be fake) is indeed true, then we can see where they could be going. Selesnya's Convoke was a mechanic where the more creatures you had, the cheaper you could make your spells. This works betters with tokens. Populate: "To populate, put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of a creature token you control" It, too, is a creature based mechanic but only works if you have a token. It works much differently but sticks to a token generating theme. I'm just waiting for what Haunt will become =P I wish they made good cards with it the first time around to make it less bad

Haunt was a really weird mechanic, Blind hunter bats was good though.

I just think they were afraid of printing cards with haunt that had useful abilities. A card I made a few years ago to show how haunt could have been good was like... [CARDNAME] 3BW Sorcery Return target black or white creature card from your graveyard to play. Haunt
or
[CARDNAME] 3WW Creature - Something. Maybe a Spirit or Cleric of some kind Haunt When the creature ~ haunts is put into the graveyard, remove target creature from the game. 2/2

That sounds like it would be a pretty good card in with the advent of mythic rares, but it might have been one of those effects where there was potential design space for a card like that, but it was too powerful to print at the time.
They probably made sure that the haunt effects were seemingly underpowered as if you were playing the effect you could expect to get said effect twice per card.
You never know though, it seems like something they might bring back for an enchantment matters block as it seems to be a way of compensating for the card disadvantage problems with most auras.
If that's the case, you might get artifacts like this:
Poe Lantern UC (uncommon) 2 (colorless) Poe Lantern is Hexproof. Poe Lantern becomes a 1/1 creature with flying as long as it is haunted.
Power would probably have to be adjusted but it would be an interesting design direction if the mechanic was deemed to be popular enough and an upcoming set had the right flavor for it to make a comeback.

I really like that idea actually. Maybe give it something to do when not haunted? Unfortunately WotC deemed haunt too confusing and complicated to ever bring back. *sad face* oh well. Gives me development room to make my own fun cards.
On a more important note, Golgari's mechanic, Scavenge, has been revealed. Limited powerhouse but I feel it falls short of constructed playability outside of casual. Sure, a 3/1 with Scavenge BG would be nice but at first glace its an ok mana sinc. Makes me wonder how Simic will turn out with Golgari getting a +/+ counters

I am stuck with a few guilds. I am one that is mixed between Dimir and Rakdos, but I also have some fun with Izzet. I want to also be in the Orzhov Coalition, but right now it is so tough to do that due to mana issues
