I wasn't really sure where to put this. If it's in the wrong place - sorry. sweatdrop

I have some socks with the toes and heels a bit too worn out, but I don't want to throw them out. They're store bought. Some are almost knee high, others are ankle socks. I'm unsure what to do with them but I want to put them to use.

I'd prefer ideas that don't require a sewing machine since I don't have one but others may find those uses useful... I can't really thing of anything knit-y I could do with them (or would it work like t-shirt yarn?). And I'm not sure about use for other types of crafting.

Any sort of up-cycling crafty ideas?

You posted this in the right place!

This is such a good post so glad you posted this. Well you could make the simple thing and make a sock monkey or other plushies.

You could also make and iPod holder.

Thats all I got so far.

Yay. whee

Plushies do sound like a good idea. As long as the socks are clean they could even be for giftmas gifts... Are socks usually microwavable? I could fill 'em with old or cheap rice and make microwavable hot pack things... hm.

An iPod holder would probably be great for one of the socks. I really like the design on it.
Thank you. biggrin

You can make pet toys.

I bought a pair of Christmas-themed baby socks and packed them with stuffing and bells.
My cats go crazy over them.
Probably more so had I added catnip.

You can microwave socks! They make great heating pads when you fill them with rice and microwave them!

Ahh. Now I really do want to make like... little bears stuffed with rice... and put them in "PMS care packs" for giftmas. rofl My cousins would love them.

If I do end up making the bears and/or the kits I'll post pictures. biggrin

Thank you for your post! Similar problem for me, my case the socks just refused to stay up so they are no longer useful as socks.

Would love to see your finished projects!

I'm going to try the cat toy suggestion

Haha all the good ideas have already been posted. If you have a small pet like a Rat or hamster you can cut up the socks and any other fabric scraps or old towels you have and make washable/reusable bedding. mrgreen

I found another use for no-longer useful socks: sock buns. I have my hair in one right now. It's great. One thing to keep in mind is how much hair you have and the length of your sock. The longer the sock the bigger the bun. I don't quite have enough hair for a longer sock so I ended up cutting mine in half. Otherwise it's great.
This is a good video for it. There are others too if that one doesn't help you. 3nodding

Another use for socks that someone suggested to me. I'm sure big socks can be used. They'll just be a bit bigger...

I have seen ADORABLE instructions for little pig plushies made from socks, but I lost my link. You should definitely look them up.

That's a super cute idea. Mind if I make some up for all my kitty friends this Christmas?

As a mouse/small animal owner, I wanted to let you know that this is really dangerous to your mousies**. sad The strings that will come out of the socks or any other cotton-based fabric when you cute them up (and when the mousies chew them up) can get wrapped around legs/etc. and cut off circulation and if the mouse swallows any of them they can get bound up in their stomach or intestines and cause a blockage. Both of these outcomes could kill your little friend! If you want to do washable, go with fleece: It is totally safe for the little guys. Even just a flat layer works great as washable bedding, but they love fluffing around in little pieces of the fleece too. Great use for scraps. biggrin
(**mouse in this whole statement goes for any small animal/"pocket pet")
