Pen Pals_yours_ and _mine_ have been pen pal for god knows how long. One is a regular American teen and the other is your average American soldier. _yours_ met _mine_ when _mine_ was given an assignment in their English class as a Sophmore. _Yours_ and _mine_ ended up writing each other back and forth for the next two years, happily getting to know each other and not really worrying about anything else, not even the war that was going on Iraq where _yours_was stationed. One day, when _yours_ takes a leave of absence from the corp, he taked a flight to America where he meets up with _mine_ for a few days and they end up falling for each other. When _yours_ is suddenly called back after a few days of being together, _yours_ goes back to Iraq and leaves _mine_ alone in tears, promising each other they'd still write. But when an unexpected even occurs and something tragic befalls _yours_, making the two lovers to never be able to see each other again, leaving _mine_ heartbroken and in tears.

Tyler CollinsWhere did I go wrong, I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life Tyler sighed and looked down at the small box he had in his hands. It was adressed to a man over seas in Iraq who was fighting for America; a man who Tyler had no clue existed or even served. This box was an assignment from his English teacher, a letter was inside along with a few gadgets and a candy bar he hoped wouldn't melt on the way there. Tyler had no clue about the war going on or even if this man would get the box he sent; he didn't really care all that much. Part of him did care if this man got his box, then maybe he could learn more about the army and the war at hand. Tyler set the box in his maibox before walking back inside his house. The mailman came later that morning and took the box away, leaving Tyler to only hop that it would be sent to the right place. The next few days, Tyler went on with his normal life, all but forgetting the small box with his note in it. The note read::
Dear Sir or Ma'am,
I don't know if you'll get this or not, and I don't really know if you'll care that a teenage boy is being forced to send a random letter to a soldier over seas for an easy A on his grade card, but I hope you do care. My name is Tyler Collins and I'm currently a sophmore in Greenwood High School. I really don't care about the war going on, even if everyone tells me I should care. Wars are just not my thing and I really have no clue about what's going on. Between you and me, I kind of didn't want to write this letter. 1, because I'm lazy and procrastinate everything, and 2, because I don't like school to begin with. I wrote this letter wishing that maybe you would reply. I may be a popular guy at school and everything, but I feel so alone, even when all of my friends are around. I know they're there, but it feels like I'm alone all the time. I don't know. . . maybe I'm being a drama queen. I do hope you write back.
Tyler Collins, 15. Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life

 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — Abigail Caesar Abigail, the soldier Tyler had written to, played with the tag around his neck. He was laying on an un-comfortable, springy bed in his tent. It was a bunk bed and he shared the bed with a fellow soldier, one of his friends, too. Abigail had just started to drift off before he felt a box land on his stomach with a soft thud. The male opened one eye and looked up towards his fellow soldier. "I was told to give this to you." The soldier mumbled. Abigail took the box in to his hand and smiled, pulling the lid off carefully. He looked at it's contents, nodding. "Funny. I was just craving chocolate." He laughed. Abigail then reached down, taking the letter in to his hands and started to read. The soldier frowned, thinking for a moment and reaching for a pen in his pocket along with a piece of paper.
Dear Tyler,
I am glad to have gotten your box. Funny thing, actually. I was just craving chocolate at the time it arrived, so thank you for that. It's a little soft and melted, but it's still fine. I wont let good candy go to waste. My name is Abigail Caesar. When I was in school, I did the exact same thing as you. I really didn't care about any random soldier I had to write to, but now look at me. And it's good you're not worried about the war, but you really should care a little. Your people go out here to fight for your country and if we didn't do this... You probably wouldn't be living the life you've got. Now, about feeling alone... I know that feeling. I have hardly anyone in my life. Why do you think I joined the army? I felt like no one would really miss me, so why not? But trust me, you're never alone. There's always someone. Even I know that. If you wish, we can keep in contact. It would be nice if I had someone to talk to while I was out here. I'll try to reply to every letter you send. You can tell me anything. No secrets. I don't betray someone who has trusted me with their secrets.
Thanks again for the candy and other stuff. You're a real life saver.
- Abiail Caesar, 24
Abigail also attatched a little picture of himself to the letter before putting it in to an envelope and writing the adress. Abigail then got down from his bed and went to send the letter.

Tyler CollinsWhere did I go wrong, I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life Tyler had just gotten back from school and was walking inside his two-story white house that his parents had bought about fice years ago. His little brothers ran around wildly since their day ended at twelve while his went on for another five hours because of his after school program he enrolled in for Art. "Tyler is that you?" his mother asked from the kitchen. "Yeah, Mom?" Tyler asked, walking into the other room, his bag still on his shoulders. "A letter came for you today. Somewhere in Iraq from a soldier named Abigail," his mother said, guesturing to the letter on the table. Without thinking, Tyler dropped his bag, scatched up the letter and ran to his room, quickly reading through it and seeing the picture. Before long, Tyler was sitting at his desk writing a reply.
Dear Abigail,
I can't tell you how excited I just was to hear I got a reply. Like literally, I just dropped my bag and ran to my room, haha. I was a little surprised you were man considering the name. For some reason I think Gail would fit you better then adding the Abi on it. My mother's probably freaking out since I left her in the kitchen with my two little brothers without even saying how my day was. I knonestly didn't expect a letter back this soon considering the time differences and what not and the flight times. Anyways, even if I don't know you well enough, I'm going to say be careful when you're out fighting. I really don't think anyone else would talk to me, so I hope you can stay around for a while.
Tyler
Tyler folded the letter neatly and stuck it into an envelope before putting on the same adress and sticking a picture of himself in the letter also, even if it was a silly picture that he didn't like much. He ran downstairs, stuck a stamp on the lettter and ran outside before sticking it in the mailbox, hoping for another reply soon. Abigail walked in to the tent, frowning. He had been injured. Nothing serious, though. Just a few broken fingers. The male removed his wet hat and placed it down on to the side of his bed before catching a glimpse of something. A small pile of letters. Abigail looked through the three letters. One from his family. Another from his friend. And the last from Tyler. Abigail grinned and sat down on the bed, reading through the letter before once again writing a reply, using his good hand.
Dear Tyler,
I'm glad to hear from you again. I'm happy you looked forward to my reply. Sorry if my handwriting is a little odd, I am having to use my left hand since two fingers and a thumb on my right hand has been broken while I was out fighting. I understand what you mean. I have a silly name... Something you'd expect a girl to have. I wouldn't mind at all if you decided to call me Gail or Gale. I like that. And don't worry, I try my best to be careful out here. The worst that's happened to me out here was when I got shot in the hip. I always try to be careful. I'll be here as long as you need me.
- Abigail.

Tyler CollinsWhere did I go wrong, I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life Tyler checked the mailbox first thing when he got home everyday for the next couple days, finally seeing a letter back on the fifth day. Smiling, the teen took it up to his room and read it, his expression turning a little sad when he read the man had been hurt before replying.
Dear Gail,
I tell you to be careful a little too late, you're already hurt. And yeah, your name is a little odd for a man. Then again I have a couple friends named Morgan and Shelby so it's not all that bad. I've been working really hard in Art lately for some reason, maybe because I like that class. I made a small. . . um. . . I think it's called a dreamcatcher but I can't remember. It took me a while to get it started but now it's finished biggrin . I was thinking maybe you could hang it somewhere so if you ever had bad dreams they'd go away. I look forward to your next letter.
Tyler
Tyler put the dreamcatcher in another small box with the letter and closed it, putting it in the mail with a small smile. Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend Somewhere along in the bitterness And I would have stayed up with you all night Had I known how to save a life

The male reached up, taking the box and the letter. Once he pulled it open, he glanced down at the dream catcher and grinned. It was beautiful... The male lifted the dream catcher up and placed it just above his bed before starting to read the letter.
Dear Tyler,
Well, when you're in the army, you're bound to get hurt, right? I know. Some mother's give the weirdest names. It's a good thing you're working hard in class - I also used to love art. It was one of the best subjects for me. Thank you so much for the dream catcher. I've been having quite a few nightmares lately. It's gorgeous.
- Gail
Abigail looked around, trying to find something to send in return. He pulled a small bullet out of his pocket, the one that had been removed from his hip and placed it in to the box, heading off to send it.
