Recently a friend of mine competed in a Jiu Jitsu tournament, and did fairly well...Although something happened that cost him a win, and now I'm started to question how I should go about competing....

See, he was doing good, and was in the Advanced Open semi finals ... He caught his opponent in a inverted arm bar, he tapped, and the crowd cheered, he then let go and stood up. The ref (Looking confused) then says to them "I didn't tell you to stop, keep fighting". Our guy Mike, just looked at him, and was like "ummm what? he just tapped". The other guy realizing he could keep fighting if he lied, says " I was going to tap, but he let go before I could." The ref then instructs the both of them to keep rolling, so they had to reset, he sat back from being in the guys open guard to attack the legs, and he took that momentum scoring himself 2 points for a sweep and then he stalled, and laid on top on him the rest of what little of the battle was left so Mike ended up losing. He tried getting a bunch of other people from other schools to tell the ref, and event coordinator that the other guy tapped, but to no avail.... stare

So now, I'm stuck wondering how I should go about taking submissions, and competing ... Should I go by the, "Take the sub, and if he taps I let go, hoping that the ref will notice, and if he doesn't, hope that the guy will show honor by admitting his defeat?" ...

Or should I go flat out Royce Gracie post Ken Shamrock, and not let go of subs till the ref pulls me off? ... gonk

OR!!!! When I catch someone in a sub, and know its for sure, I start yelling, "REF LOOK REF HE'S TAPPING ARE YOU SEEIN THIS!?!" scream

Ahhhhh!...I'm worried about the approach I should take ... Can you guys provide any insight? ... sweatdrop

I depends on what level of competition I would have to say. I compete relationally so for me a win is not worth breaking someones arm. But If I was in a MMA match and it was a source of income then I would just go for the kill.
Another option is if they are tapping just lighten the pressure abit but don't let go of the sub.

Sounds great man, thank you very much for the advice ... I was worried that this post will go un-replied as my usual ones, so thanks for taking the time.

I read all your posts in here its just most of the time I don't have much constructive to add. I like to make sure when I open my mouth I am 100% right.

Considering the venue, if it's within the rules to hold the submission until the referee is certain, I would hold it. Both competitors (should) understand the risk involved in such a competition of injury and as such there's little room for the other competitor to complain about a hyperextension or a sprain. That's just incentive for them to tap or call out a bit more emphatically next time.

I see...This makes much sense...I usually worry about the safety about my opponent ... But after the events taken place, I'm quite certain my opponent wouldn't feel the same ... So i'll hold my subs maybe a split second to a second longer to make the ref 100% sure I got the tap.

Hmm ... I could probably learn from that ... I do seem to talk a lot ... Maybe I shouldn't speak so openly without think of all possible set backs ... Once again you've helped me my friend ... Thanks =)

There is a fine line here ... I would like to think that the majority of us do not want to hurt our fellow competitors ... but your friend should have kept at it ... only the ref can stop the action ... now there are problems with all three options you gave ... if you let go of the sub and the ref didn't see the tap ... you might end up in your friend's situation ... now holding the submission until the ref pulls you off ... the crowd might turn on you ... and then screaming out that ,"oh he's tapping" or "he's out" ... you run the risk of causing controversy ... seeing that what if he isn't actually tapping ... you see it all the time in MMA where fighters says oh they tapped ... but in the replays there really wasn't any there ...

So in essence ... it really is up to you ...
