I know my last post on this left a bad impression, and I feel incredibly bad about it...So I made this more formal post to describe 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu to you, in attempts to make up for my last fail ...
10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, named 10th Planet, (Also known as Nibiru Jiu Jitsu) named after Planet X, or the planet recently found to be more distant from Pluto, it was called Nibiru named after, an Ancient Sumerian Text in.the oldest version of the bible, that is a planet in our solar system where a highly advanced civilization lives. That's where the name 10th Planet came from, because Nibiru is supposedly our 10th planet. The style is a non-traditional style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu developed by Eddie Bravo (Aka: Edgar Cano). The characteristics that distinguish it from traditional grappling are its strong focus on alternative, and unconventional techniques, and positions revolving around tremendous, or at least above average flexibility, and foundations without a gi.
Victory Belt Publishing released three manuals covering techniques of the 10th Planet system, one titled "Mastering The Rubber Guard(book)" in 2006, a second "Mastering the Twister(book)" in 2007., the third (and final) Mastering the Rubber Guard (The DVD) in 2011. The first and third books cover aspects of the signature guard of the system, the rubber guard, while the second tackles aspects of the twister, another integral position in the system, although people claim he invented it, he clarifies, that he did not invent anything, the origin of the twister, was from his wrestling years in high school, his friend taught him the technique/pin known as "The Guillotine." Not to be confused with the submission the guillotine, and integrated it into Jiu Jitsu. So in a sense a heavy aspect, of 10th Planet was based from wrestling.. Then expanded with Jiu Jitsu ... Anyway The books were written by Eddie Bravo, Glen Cordoza, and Erich Krauss. Planet X is the Gi version of 10th planet Jiu Jitsu ... In case you want to stick to roots ...
History: Bravo revealed this no-gi style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after defeating Royler Gracie via triangle choke in the ADCC 2003. Initially before the fight, he was star struck, this was the guy he use to show off to his friends to show how good Jiu Jitsu can look. So he was the most surprised at his victory over him. He then went on to get destroyed by Leo Vieria. He wasn't surprised at his loss, though MORE surprised at the fact that no one mentioned it, and almost acted like it never happened, so when his recognition kicked in, he felt as though it was undeserved.
His way of Jiu Jitsu wasn't developed after beating Royler, he actually had been working on techniques such as the "Lock Down." the "Rubber Guard", "Twister Side Control" ect, long before he rolled with Royler ... The reason for this, was because he was constantly afraid of his life falling apart, he is a musician at heart, and actively writes, and produces music, but he is most known for Jiu Jitsu, he loves performing with his band though, he wanted to stay in shape when he first started, he wasn't much of a weight lifter, and when he discovered Jiu Jitsu he practiced it to stay in shape, and also, because its fun (it sure is) initially a Bruce Lee fan, Eddie couldn't find any kung fu classes, so took a karate class instead, he then wrestled for 2 years in high school before discovering the UFC ... Originally when fighting he would double leg a guy, and always thought it was cheating, and wasn't fair ... Once he discovered the UFC he realized wrestling was a Martial art, and fell in love with Jiu Jitsu, finding Jean Jacques Machado's gym, he began his practice in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Getting a Job at the 'Man Show' as a comedy writer, he felt the show wasn't going to go far, fearing he would lose his job, and would rather do MMA than work a regular Job, he began extensive training to prepare for what he thought would have to be his UFC fight career, developing a no gi way of doing Jiu Jitsu, he of course trained with the Gi, but rolled as though his opponent wasn't wearing one, not relying on handles or collar grabs, trying to get his Jiu Jitsu as MMA ready as possible believing that he would have to turn to UFC to make a living ... He knew he wasn't strong, so using his flexibility when he rolled, he started working for unorthodox positions, and using his flexibility to aid him where strength could not, the Rubber Guard started when he used to pull a high guard, open up his opponents collar, and get his foot into the opening to control his opponents upper body, wanting to translate this into a no gi move, he started using what is known as the "Rubber Guard". From there he went to compete in ADCC where he fought Royler, and yeah I already covered that ... But AFTER the fight, gaining recognition, he was convinced to begin opening up a Jiu Jitsu school ... He did, and went on to teach his No Gi system, to help Jiu Jitsu evolve in MMA ... Though wasn't well received, but then again I'm sure most arts weren't when they first came out ... Things take time ...
Technique:
10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu focuses on constant pressure from unorthodox positions such as the Rubber guard, Twister Side Control, Monkey Mount (Gangsta Lean (Yeah I'm not much of a fan of that name either ...)) and the half-guard position known as the "Lock down" The main premise behind 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu is that the art should keep evolving, a lot of the times his students are cross training other grappling arts, and enjoys when his students bring him, "The goodies." which are just whatever techniques the students think might benefit the team, all the best techniques, to make the system better ... To get the best of all worlds into one ... All his students are considered his little scientists, because they all bring in their own pieces to mix together .. so they're constantly finding new ways to attack and counter.
Although Eddie developed his way (I say his way, as does he, because he himself doesn't believe he invented or discovered anything, his term for it is, "I just brought it to everyone's attention.") of doing Jiu Jitsu, he still has traditional BJJ hero's such as the Gracie's, Minotauro Noguera, Marcelo Garcia, and Jean Jacques Machado.
The intention of 10th Planet was to try, and make Jiu Jitsu more known, and to expand it, to bring it together, even the Gracie's have accepted his way of Jiu Jitsu, they don't actively practice it though I've seen Rener Gracie play with the Rubber Guard before.
The Belt system is followed like the traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu System
Though this is how it is for 10th Planet Jiu jitsu:
For those who are NOT enrolled in an official 10th Planet school,
You must be a premium member of the 10thplanetJJ.com website for at least 6 months. So you can have access to all the technique videos, especially "Mastering The System" is crucial for promotion.
Then you will need to post on your 10th Planet profile 10 competition wins, and in the video you must have a 10th Planet patch on your shorts, or gi pants, in every match(you can have other school patches too, share the love). To get a purple belt you must post 20 competition wins. To get a brown you must post 30 wins.
Plus you must upload 7 10th Planet technique videos., one of all the half guard techniques you know, one of all the rubber guard techniques you know, one all the twister set ups, and transitions you know, one of all the deep hook transitions to spider web techniques that you know, one of all the mount/back techniques you know, one of all the passing, and transitions you know, and the last one can be a miscellaneous video which could include anything, and everything else you know, like various chokes, x guard, 50/50 etc.
You must not teach in videos you post, you have to perform the techniques swiftly, and name EVERY position as you pass through it. No discussions, and absolutely no edits in any of the videos what so ever one continuous shot. Each technique video should be about 3 minutes, and again don't not to teach in the video, just run through the technique.
All videos must be posted on the forum so the whole association can see what you're up to. When you're ready to be analyzed just start a thread titled "[Your name here] ranking thread".
Then once your thread has been graded, you'll be notified by Eddie himself if you've earned a promotion, (or not), either 4 stripped white belt, blue blue with 4 stripe's, purple(or purple with stripes) or brown (or brown stripped).
Every promotion no matter what color will require the same 15 videos. Naturally the 5 technique videos will be critiqued alot harder for a purple than a blue, and worse so for a brown than a purple.
10th Planet head instructors that are non black belts can only rank their students to a blue belt. All Nibiru warriors that ARE enrolled in official 10th Planet schools that are run by non black belts that want to get their purple, or brown belt must be first recommended by their instructor, and only have to submit 5 technique videos to your 10thplanetJJ.com forum. Rather than having to do most of the above.
One of all the half guard techniques you know, one of all the Rubber Guard techniques you know, one of all the twister set ups, and transitions you know, one of all the deep hook transitions you know know, and one of all the passes you know,
"One continuous swoop. you gotta show me what you know without looking at any notes...Easy right?? smile " -Eddie Bravo
Anyway...That's how ranking, and testing is done in 10th Planet..You can only get a black belt from Eddie himself, by personality testing from him, the test is secret, and I unfortunately am no where near black belt level besides the flexibility ...
In my opinion 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu is in its infancy form, which is why it hasn't seen much attention ... And also why I understand peoples skepticism in trying this form of Jiu Jitsu ... But it is actively evolving, there were originally some other moves that Eddie does not teach anymore, because of their ineffectiveness ... Only one I know of is the position called, "London" Which was the way point between Mission control, and new york ... Originally the basic Rubber Guard sequence went thusly ...
1. Break the opponents posture
2. Mission Control
3. London
4. Zombie
5. New York
6. Chill Dog
7 Clear the neck
8. Kung Fu move
9. Omoplata (Optional)
But london was taken out due to its ineffectiveness to hold one down, and with the introduction of the Double bagger, thanks to one of his students showing the move, and Eddie Fell in love with the Technique, and gives his student credit each time he shows the technique.
The Rubber Guard sequence is now (advanced version)
1. Break posture
2. Mission Control
3. Zombie the arm
4. New York
5. Chill Dog
6.Double Bagger
7. Clear the neck
8. Kung Fu move
9. Invisible Collar
10. Technique of your choosing
Attacks from This guard are, gogoplata , asylum, straight jacket, reaper, locoplata, Croc, swim move and MANY more. (My Favorite is Chill Dog to the Carni)
So seeing as how moves have been added, and taken out in the last sequence shows that this form is still in work shop mode ... But its good to learn so we can have more tools in our tool box ... Even if they are not needed its good to have ...
Notable 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Users in MMA are:
Jason Chambers, Lyoto Machida, Shinya Aoki, Shuichiro Katsumura, Dan Hardy, Alan Belcher, and BJ Penn, and Chan Sung Jung (The Korean Zombie), and Frank Mir might start too since he was at Legends Gym with Eddie... And possibly George St. Pierre ... He was at 10th Planet HQ, but there was only video of him asking Joe Rogan to teach him how to perform a perfect turning side kick ... So I'm not sure if he was also there to learn some NJJ ... There may be more, but none that I have seen ...
Lastly:
People always question the silly names ... Well...Mostly just crackhead control ... The Idea for the silly names is that it makes the positions easier to remember ... Whats going to stick more in your head? ... Break posture to both legs up to leg grab, with double leg curls, around the head, with tight grip on left or right leg ... Or Crackhead control? ...
Sorry I couldn't be more insightful ...This was to the best of my knowledge ... I just hope I helped you guys understand Nibiru Jiu Jitsu a little more ... If you need anymore info feel free to ask ...
