Since there are so many different martial arts, I was wondering what are the different ranks in other styles. I'm also wondering what it takes to earn those ranks.
Ryu Te Kempo Karate Advancement (Kids and Adults): White, Yellow, Gold, Purple, Blue, Green, Brown-White, Brown, Brown-Black, Red, Red-Black, and Black
Takes approximately 5 years to earn a first degree black belt.
To earn my first degree black belt I had to know 18 Katas (Forms) and numerous of stances, strikes, blocks, kicks. I also had to come up with a musical board breaking routine, a three station break, and go through a speed break. I had to know all level one chin na techniques and their various options along with other self defense. I had to spar for almost thirty minutes, including a single, double, and three person attack. Because I'm in jiujitsu I also rolled with my Sensei for five minutes straight at the end. The test took four and a half hours.
Caique Brazilian Jiujitsu Adult Belt Advancement: White (With 4 stripes), Blue (4 stripes), Purple (4 stripes), Brown (4 stripes), Black
Takes approximately 10 years to earn a first degree black belt.
Chin Na Advancement:
To be honest I'm not sure. It took about a year, a year and a half to earn my level 2/3.
If you have further questions for me, feel free to ask. Please post what your style's advancement is. Thank you.

For 10th Planet Jiu jitsu:
This is how its going to work for those who are NOT enrolled in an official 10th Planet school,
You must be a premium member of the 10thplanetJJ.com website for at least 6 months. So you can have access to all the technique videos, especially "Mastering The System" is crucial for promotion.
Then you will need to post on your 10th Planet profile 10 competition wins, and in the video you must have a 10th Planet patch on your shorts, or gi pants, in every match(you can have other school patches too, share the love). To get a purple belt you must post 20 competition wins. To get a brown you must post 30 wins.
Plus you must upload 7 10th Planet technique videos., one of all the half guard techniques you know, one of all the rubber guard techniques you know, one all the twister set ups, and transitions you know, one of all the deep hook transitions to spider web techniques that you know, one of all the mount/back techniques you know, one of all the passing, and transitions you know, and the last one can be a miscellaneous video which could include anything, and everything else you know, like various chokes, x guard, 50/50 etc.
You must not teach in videos you post, you have to perform the techniques swiftly, and name EVERY position as you pass through it. No discussions, and absolutely no edits in any of the videos what so ever one continuous shot. Each technique video should be about 3 minutes, and again don't not to teach in the video, just run through the technique.
All videos must be posted on the forum so the whole association can see what you're up to. When you're ready to be analyzed just start a thread titled "[Your name here] ranking thread".
Then once your thread has been graded, you'll be notified by Eddie himself if you've earned a promotion, (or not), either 4 stripped white belt, blue blue with 4 stripe's, purple(or purple with stripes) or brown (or brown stripped).
Every promotion no matter what color will require the same 15 videos. Naturally the 5 technique videos will be critiqued alot harder for a purple than a blue, and worse so for a brown than a purple.
10th Planet head instructors that are non black belts can only rank their students to a blue belt. All Nibiru warriors that ARE enrolled in official 10th Planet schools that are run by non black belts that want to get their purple, or brown belt must be first recommended by their instructor, and only have to submit 5 technique videos to your 10thplanetJJ.com forum. Rather than having to do most of the above.
One of all the half guard techniques you know, one of all the Rubber Guard techniques you know, one of all the twister set ups, and transitions you know, one of all the deep hook transitions you know know, and one of all the passes you know,
"One continuous swoop. you gotta show me what you know without looking at any notes...Easy right?? smile " -Eddie Bravo
Anyway...That's how ranking, and testing is done in 10th Planet..You can only get a black belt from Eddie himself, and it has to be at 10th Planet HQ, and I don't know what to do to get a black belt besides having the flexibility to get your legs behind your head, getting into the butterfly stretch while your knees are touching the ground, and your feet are as close to your groin area as possible, and pulling lotus without the use of your hands.I've got that flexibility, but other than that, I don't think I'm anywhere near a black belt =P But I know its got something to do with him watching you, and seeing your technique, and deciding your ready, and he'll give you a test (Which is super top secret)
(I stopped taking Judo long ago, but I got as far 5th kyu which is like the higher white belts, but for !0th P JJ I'm a purple belt..And a Brown Belt Gracie Jiu Jitsu...My belt rants are bad yeah...But I make up for it with my experience when I roll)
