I'm just poking them with swords and then running away to heal then going back to poke some more because my magic does nothing on them. x.x

Greetings;

Well, if you level up and put your skill points where I would, you could just dual summon dremora lords and stand back and let them tear the hell out of whatever stands before you and your loot/treasure/quest goal. Always love doing that-should they somehow manage to defeat your powerful summon dremora, you could always smash them up pretty good with a soul tear shout.

Thank you...

They are weak against fire spells dual wed them that is what I do for my mage characters.

You talking about the Dwemer contraptions? I can totally understand where you're coming from. And they have that steam breath crap so sometimes just shooting fireballs doesn't work. Dual wielding dooms me since I need my healing on one hand. .w. I kinda just shoot fireballs, shout at them and use a Flame Atronach. Works for me, but if you found blocking and one-handed works for you, congrats. c: I know it doesn't help me since my weapon skill is so low. >w>

I see most people have suggested that you use Conjuration. Marvelous suggestion. Back when I had a mage, I used Conjuration, Archery, and Heavy Armor. Learn the Bound Bow Spell, Dremora Lord Spell, and Storm Atronach Spell (they work just fine and are your most powerful atronach. Dremora's can be a pain if you want your Magicka to regen fast for a bound weapon.). Now go in, dual cast and summon the lord/atronach then use your bound bow for longer range and good damage.

You can't just pretend to dodge every single blow. One moment you're going to take a hit. A HARD HIT... like steam and dwemer metal. Conjuration and Destruction are obviously the offense but don't forget your defense. Gain a few perks from alteration and increase your defenses. Gain another few perks to increase your healing capacity.
Be smart and use the environment, hehehe. They can't crouch under low doors and will stand there like idiots waiting for you to get closer. They also go the long way around pillars, facing away from you while walking around it. So don't be scared to be a little childish while fighting things that a dead serious about killing you. Be creative and use telekinesis to grab things from a far, specifically things with dull shapes, and launch them!
Finally, invest in Deep Freeze, Intense Flames, and/or Disintegrate. Any of the three will give you a HUGE advantage over foes that take less damage and have huge amounts of health.

I like to use a one two combo. I summon my most powerful thing (Arniel's Shade) and use lightning storm. I find that while I stand back all my enemies attack Arniel's Shade.

I have yet to obtain Arniel's Shade. I'll have to try that some time. Sounds neat.

Assuming you're a low level mage with limited magic and not a vast spell repertoire, and assuming like most mages your Destruction skill is close to being most advanced, if not already most advanced out of all your magic skills, then this is for you.

Shock (as one would logically expect) would affect metal creatures a bit more than frost or fire.

If you get the dual casting perk for destruction that stuns enemies, and you have robes that increase magic regeneration/decrease destruction costs, you can easily stunlock enemies with repeated lightning bolts. Hit them, let them recover, hit them again, let them recover.... Easiest way to kill enemies, they can't even move and you kill them. The best part is, since you have a short pause between each cast, your magic keeps up pretty well, so it's pretty effecient. I even killed a dragon priest at level 12 or so using that method with a nice set of mage clothing. Same with dragons, just stunlock them.

Keep in mind this is the "brute force" of all mage tactics, and I would suggest that for a more fulfilling mage role-playing experience, don't use a cheap method like this more than once or twice, and use cunning and your own combination of effective spells to defeat your foes. It's much more satisfactory than stunlocking them to death.

Example, use conjuration to summon allies and weapons to fight them in melee combat, after using alteration to buff yourself with stone skin, and then have a restoration ward ready in your non-weapon hand, or just a healing spell. Illusion is a good choice IF you acquire the perk to affect dwemer machines and daedra. Or acquire a follower and then have the perk for double summoning and summon a daedra so you have two companions traveling with you, and use your other summoning "space" for exploding wolf summons, which are incredibly fun variences of the familiar spell, except when they get to an enemy they ignite and explode. Or if you dual summon, just summon two of the exploding wolves while you hide out of sight. There's a dozen options for every situation.

They are resistant to shock damage.... Not completly of course but it is the weakest type of magika to use against them.

Actually I just verified this, they're immune to poison, soul trap and frost damage. Fire and Shock work normally against them, disregarding their 25% magic resistance.

So for pure necessity, one would either attack them with melee, fire, or lightning, as ice is useless against automatons.

Just saying.
