Lesson time! This about why learning to draw the proper anatomy is important for artist, no matter the character's personality and all that. Many times people will say that you have to learn the anatomy and many often as why. Doesn't matter what style, you have to know the rules before you can break them.

I am not the best artist in the world and still have a lot to learn it comes to the anatomy and all that but there is this one trend that artist are doing that is driving me crazy and will explain why. I also thought about making a tutorial or posting a journal about this on DA to help fellow artist (though I will just use my own pictures for examples on that to avoid problems unless they ask for reviews/corrections), but for now will just post it here. smile

Today's subject is male characters, especially effeminate males. Males seem to be the hardest draw as they often seem to be drawn having a female body.

So many people have male characters that a bit effeminate and that's fine. I have some that are as well at times, but that doesn't mean that they will have a female body, they are still male. Which my pet peeve, drawing proper anatomy. Lord knows that my guys looked weird when starting out, now their drawings are looking better.

Look at the difference-
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/art/It-s-Snowing-280220397
Ignoring the hand for now, he looked awful. The biggest complaint I got was that wasn't a male body. I agree (can't really see the review as that was for premium memberships and that lasted only a day and disappeared).

Now look at the improved versions I did-
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/art/It-s-Snowing-280621353
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/art/It-s-Snowing-Redo-2-color-294797156

Same character and outfit, just a more proper anatomy. Doesn't it look better now?

Example-I saw this and assumed it was a girl (curvy hips and all, The base itself bothers me for many reasons, but that is a different subject).
http://my.deviantart.com/messages/#/d55lrse

Ah no. That looked worse than my first pic of that It's Snowing drawing I just showed you and mine was pretty bad.

So lesson one-Difference between men and women and their anatomy.
Men don't naturally have a have waist and hips like that. Why? Because they don't give childbirth.

Reminded me of a discussion someone posted on this subject and how draw the proper anatomy and showing the difference when it comes to body types of men and women and the common mistakes not to make.

Main difference was the waist, chest and hips. Shame they took it down, as that was helpful.

Another note to make is that women in general have softer facial features where men's are often sharper and angular. The only way some of these feature's change (besides surgery, binding or using what is called a packie but that is a different topic and not what most artist/creators are even going for, so won't be going into that), is through hormone injections or dysfunction in my case. Even then, surgery is the only way to remove or create some anatomical parts.

Do your research and study anatomy. Might make a lot of mistakes and look terrible at first and that's o.k., the more you practice, the better it will look. I promise.

Now pointing out mistakes and what to correct.

So that boy in the picture would still have a p***s. Yes, I know many artist freak out about that, but men have packages or bulges down there so to speak. Waist won't be nearly have curvy and wouldn't have such wide hips. Even males with slender bodies don't look like that. Men will have a slight curve at the as it isn't entirely straight, but no where near as curvy as women's.

Another note-don't forget the clavicle/collar bone. Don't forget that their necks usually are thicker, the have a more prominent larynx, also known as the Adam's Apple. Men in general also have broader shoulder, will women's shoulders are more sloped and the indentation of the waist is also a little higher on women. Men have bigger hands.

Tips:
Hands are roughing the size of your face.
When drawing males, use more triangles and rectangle shapes, while more circles for females. This will help with the basic fundamentals of the body, even for the more masculine women and effeminate men.

Also look a different body types as everyone one is different and will help give your characters more variety. Not all women have the same chest size and some people are heavier or slimmer than others.

Here are some good tutorials to look at to help

Now go practice and show off your sexy boys and girls. biggrin

Lesson two, drawing proper breast.

Yes, now I will go into boobs. Another topic artist are embarrassed about, but will help make your females more accurate.

First thing to keep in mind is gravity. Brest will sag, especially when you get older, have child or bigger. That's where the magic of bras come in.

Big problem artist make is skinny girls, especially ninja, which big breast but the wrong body type that can't support them. Breast are made of fat tissue mostly, so usually women with bigger breast are heavier and curvier in general. Also remember that big breast can be painful, can hurt your back. Now I am a size DD (maybe a bit smaller now) and a dancer and learning some martial arts and self-defense. I can move around a lot obviously, but isn't always comfortable. Keep that in mind for action characters.

They also don't look like beach balls. Circles can help with the placement and size, but they won't look like that in the end. Breast sit on top of the pectoral muscle and move along with it.

Also need to make sure you draw the armpits.

Fact-Did you know that most women wear the wrong size bra cup? Don't always trust charts from artist, go search measurements instead. Can't really work for characters as well as you can't measure them

Now keep in mind that breast comes in different sizes.

Example. Look at Kotori's funky boobs here. Bad

Not perfect, but looks much better and isn't too big for her body type-

Lesson three/resources: Body types

Since everyone is different, characters are also going to be draw different.

Examples
Karasu and Ren are The ECTOMORPH type. Meaning they are slimmer and have a harder time gaining weight and muscles (they have to work harder at it and would need a lot of protein in their diet. Protein is good for muscles. Karasu didn't get his sexy abs just from sitting on his butt all day. wink ) . Kotori have the curviest figure out of all the girls (she is more of an hour glass shape). Sayuri is just a bit heavier than her and the shorts. Sayuri is the endomorph. Her shape is rounder.

Ren is more of an inverted triangle
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/gallery/35811564#/d4ma1wj

Airi-
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/gallery/?q=airi#/d41rgh5

I need to redraw this, but she will either be a rectangle or apple shape.

If you look here, her face is more rounder and she is a bit more plump but not morbidly obese. Her breast are a bit saggier (probably because they are a bit bigger due to her weight) and probably a pear shape.

http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/art/Sayuri-Reference-sheet-Line-Art-296365541

Due to working out more physically, Airi and Suzume have more muscle mass and more toned. Remember men in general have more muscle mass though and six pack abs don't come naturally. It is the result of a lot of hard work.

Redo w.i.p. pic showing you an example working on more proper body types-
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=scraps&offset=24#/d4mlkbg

As you can see, Karasu's shoulders are now more broader and Kotori's is more slopped. Kotori's chest sized decreased so it looks better for her body type. They aren't completely round either. Still a major work in progress.

questions to ask your self about your OCs. Are they tall? Short? What is their metabolism? What is their diet like? Are they active and if so, what do they do?

http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/favourites/47905438?offset=24#/d4xllt8

As you can see, I need practice too, lets practice together.

Once you get the basics of anatomy down and have a basic idea for your character and written stuff down, time for style.

Come on, they can't be naked all the time (not even that sexy Karasu). wink

Some questions to keep in mine-Are they from a certain fandom, what clothing is appropriate for that fandom or original story? For their age, what is their personality? What is their job and dress code?

A tomboy like Airi isn't going to be seen in a frilly/lace outfit like Sayuri and Kotori isn't shy about showing off her body. Keep their personalities in mind. Shy girls aren't going to dress slutty and shy boys probably won't were extremely tight pants or show off their abs.

Like body types, each character have their own unique style and personality. For the sake of art though, I will mostly focus style. Maybe others can help with the writing and developing your character.

Sayuri is sweet, caring and cute, so her outfit is more sweet and cute looking-
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/art/Sayuri-Reference-sheet-Line-Art-296365541

See her style? She has bows, ruffles, etc...but also kept her info in mind (not a runner really and does more research at that stage, not much fighting). Original outfit that was less fitting-
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/art/Sayuri-Reference-sheet-colored-w-i-p-270632981

Not very fitting for the series unless she isn't working. The other is more fitting yet kept some of the elements.

Ryuuichi is a medic/scientist , so here is a drawing of a lab coat
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d53r1ji

Here are some reference for Karasu-
See how these ones fit the actual series and has a uniform?
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=scraps#/d5323lp

This won't work well for his job, but is fine for casual wear and fits his personality-
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=scraps#/d54ex05
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d4viixw

Tips for style. Since this was inspired by Naruto, I'll post basics for than then work on stuff outside of the series.

Suna is hot, so you aren't art going to expose as much skin at times (why many wear robes), but not going to wear a sweater either. Kumo and Kiri seem to be cooler due to mist and clouds, so you are more likely to see them wear sweaters and sweatshirts (more so with Kiri)-

They don't wear fishnets, trust me, it is a bad idea. Fishnets won't give girls with bigger breast much support (my dance teacher ranted about this as it was part of a costume and for some, it just won't work unless they have something over or under it) and will rip. What they actually wear is metal chain mesh and people like Anko actually have it custom made for their body. Mental is much more protective for a ninja.

No bandages as shorts, bad idea (yeah genin Ino did it and that must of been hell for her). Ninja can't spend a lot of time undressing and undressing, they are often on the go. Plus very impractical for many reasons (might even lead to some embarrassing or difficult situations). They can also tear, which will expose them. Also not good for tops themselves for the same reason unless you have something over it. Guys can get away with it but that leads their vital spots exposed and enemies would take advantage of that and would try to kill them. Just not a good idea for them with just a bandage on their chest while on a mission.

These can help you find a more appropriate outfit while on missions

http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/tutorials/?order=5&q=naruto&offset=96#/d4qv0y0
http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/tutorials/?order=5&q=naruto&offset=72#/d4ridqm
http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/tutorials/?order=5&q=naruto&offset=72#/d4rid5k

Note, girls with long hair should probably keep it up. Yuko has hers in a ponytail, Suzume's bangs are pulled back a bit to keep some of it out of her eyes and the fringe isn't in her eyes, Sayuri has her in pigtails. The exception is Kotori and a lot of it is in braided buns and isn't too long, just past her shoulders. Ren also has his hair in a low ponytail. You can keep it down if not fighting or on missions. Even the new movie Road To Ninja showed Kushina with her hair pulled back and in uniform.

http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/gallery/?q=ren#/d4u2zlb
http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/gallery/?q=ren#/d4sc24k

You can also cut it short. Try out different styles. Some examples-

http://yukoisbadmedicine.deviantart.com/gallery/30685041#/d51d8ez

Trust, I learnt this the hard way. whether dancing or fighting, you don't want it getting in the way too much.

For everything else, as long as you have an idea of what your character is like in your mind, go nuts!

If it is your character, you can do what you want with them, but these can help to make it more fitting in certain settings, for personalities, etc...I hope all these help!

Recommend getting an anatomy book as well as Shojo Fashion Manga Art School Year 1 and 2, those have some great tips for styles of all sorts and how to make it more realistic and fitting.
