Seeing as i've been to otakon since 04, i wanted to give you newbies and maybe oldies some tips i have learned through the years -
1. Pack Food I started doing this at cons maybe 3 years ago, best choice ever. Sure its fun to go out and eat once, but its expensive. The 7-11 is always packed and still not cheap down the road, there isn't much choice but to spend all your swag money on food for the weekend. I save a ton of money by just bringing a cooler with some samich stuff, hell we've brought microwaves and ramen before, the hotel won't mess with you (atleast at the hyatt)
2. Don't pay the Hobos Just don't do it. Its all bad, they are leeches. The only time i would ever consider giving a hobo something is if he does something really clever. I think in 06 some hobo came up and started talking to us and said, "so i got a question fo ya! What's the best nation?" We all guess, but are all wrong, then he says "a doNATIOn!" Now that is clever, i gave him a dollar.
3. STAY AT THE HYATT If you can Stay at the hyatt, its the best, its connected to the convention center, and is all around fun. Its a little late now, but always try to stay at the hyatt, its the best.
4. Cool your drinks More than likely the hotel will run out of ice friday, and be a pain in the a** to get more. I always fill the sink up with ice as soon as i get there and put my drinks in there.
5. Beware of the Liquor Store If you want to buy some liquor, be careful, i would recommend not going in cosplay, its a really sketchy a** walk, you might get jumped or raped. All around not good, go with a friend.
6. Memes Don't overuse a meme, its obnoxious
7. Complaining Don't complain about long lines, if you don't show really early, your not getting in.
8. Get their early If you want to see an event, get there an hour early, just trust me on this.
9. cigarette butts If you smoke and don't litter, do not pile cigarette butts in your pockets and throw them away in the hotel room, they will charge you a smoking fee.
10. Photos DON'T STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WALK WAYS TO TAKE PHOTOS OR LET SOMEONE ELSE STOP YOU! GET TO AN OPEN AREA!
so yeah anyone else give in your tips.

Great tips smile We thought about bringing a microwave, but I'm so afraid it will blow a fuse and the entire hotel will lose power XD

6a. "BUTTSCRATCHA" IS DEAD. LET IT STAY DEAD.
6b. "The game" can be defeated by invoking Rule 34, since as far as this particular poster is aware, no porn of "The game" currently exists.
Also, Rule 34. Because, you know. (see above)

i've been using #1 for the past few conventions, and it's definitely saved me a nice chunk of money. i never brought a microwave before tho.. that's a new one to me lol. to add on to 1, i try to bring food that doesn't need to be heated up or kept cool, so it's usually fresh fruit and fruit cups, snack crackers, juice, etc. i also bring ramen, but only cup noodles since they're cheaper (3 for a dollar where i get them) and you can use the coffee maker to heat the water. if you plan on using cash (which i'd suggest you do), get it before you come to the con and do your best to stay within your budget if you've set one (which i'd also suggest you do). don't keep all of your money on you all the time and avoid atms if you can. they can run out of money by saturday and the fee for taking money out is kinda on the high end. that's all i can think of to share for now.

Yeah, unless you're lucky enough to have a branch of your bank within reasonable walking distance of the con, you'll only want to use an ATM if you're desperate. You're better off going to a 7-11, CVS, whatever, buying a soda, and getting cash back there.

11. If you MUST eat out, try to limit such meals to one a day; that way, you can splurge if you wish.
Some of this poster's favorite places for Otakon: - California Tortilla(godly quesadillas and queso) - Noodles and Company - Jimmy John's(if you get the biggest regular sub(I forget the name, but it has a ton of meat), you can easily split it into two meals if you plan right) - Pratt St. Ale House(good cheese fries, IMO. But since it's a bar, people under 21 may not be allowed in) - Blue Moon Cafe(it's somewhat far, but GREAT breakfast fare -- plus they're open 24 hours on weekends!)
11a. If, however, you are on a budget, but you still want to splurge, McDonalds or Subway are options. However, this poster prefers Royal Farms(pretty good chicken, IMO) or 7-11(three slices for pizza for three bucks? Add the drink of your choice, and you have a quick, cheap meal for around five bux. Worth it, IMO).
12. Another food rule: if you bring your own, get some things well in advance! Stuff like applesauce, pudding, etc. -- as long as it doesn't expire by con time, you're golden. Even better, stock up when things go on sale! Save things like sandwich meats, bread, veggies for closer to the con -- but try and get things on sale, if you possibly can.
