There once was a human who had no emotions. The human could not laugh, nor cry, nor scream. Many of the human's friends worried about him. His family did as well. Without emotions, the human was nothing but a shell. But there was hope yet for the human. The village elder told him of three entities that could give him the emotions needed to be human.
“You must travel to the fields of grass and seek out an orb of light. That being will grace you with the power of joy and happiness. The second is a beautiful woman whom has no face and lives at the base of the mountain. That being will bring you sorrow and pain. The third is a beast of darkness. One who has no form and lives in the dark parts of the forest. That being will make you tremble and give you a fright.” the elder explained. The human with no emotions accepted this task to no longer be nothing and set out on the next day to the fields of grass.
It was a sunny day with not a cloud in the sky above. The human trekked along the grassy planes, hoping to find the ball of light. He heard about the being's favorite food, Dandelions. He picked one up and offered it above his head. It vanished!
“MMM! Dandelions! So wonderful!” the voice of a small woman cried out. The human looked around and noticed the ball of light. It grew and shrunk with each movement it made. The human then explained his plight while he had the chance.
“Oh being of light, I am a human whom could never smile ever. I seek your aid in bringing me joy to my heart.” He bowed to the light as he pleaded. The light hovered closer to the human.
“Joy Is indeed one of the three core emotions for a human to have. Without such a sensation, you could kill yourself in sorrow or never try anything. I can help you, but first you need to pick a sunflower as tall as yourself and untouched by bees. To the north is a field of flowers. From there, you will find what you seek.” The entity explained. The human nodded in agreement and set off to find the flower.
Much time has past by, and the human arrived at the flower field. He noticed a person clad in a sun dress and carrying a weird parasol. He cautiously approached her and explained his situation.
“Excuse me, miss? Mind if I can take a sunflower to help regain my happiness? As tall as I preferably.” The woman looked at the human with some disgust.
“You may not take a sunflower. But you can look at one.” The woman folded her parasol, holding a hand to the human with no emotion and guiding him down the field to the grand mass of sunflowers. The human was astounded by the many sun styled plant life that he got up close to view one. It looked down at him, curious as to why he was looking at the flower. It shook it's pedals and started a small dance. The others followed along till the field was a regular festival of dance! The human did not know what was going on until the woman with the parasol came from behind.
“The sunflowers are trying to cheer you up. They want to see you smile and filled with joy, right?” as if knowing why he came. The human, though not able to understand the flowers, started to dance with them. The sunflowers soon acted more like humans, some talking to one another and others dancing with themselves. It was a sunny party in the field. The human slowly felt something with in him. It was warm, Gentle, And tickled his heart. He smiled and laughed. It was the emotion of joy he sought out for. He thanked the woman and headed back to the entity of light to explain what happened.
“Being of light, I have failed in bringing you a sunflower. But I have seen them. Sunflowers look so bright and colorful. They dance among the wind with their slender stalk as if they wish to bring joy to one without any. I felt as if something tickled my body from with in and I laughed for the first time out of joy! Thank you-” The human stopped and noticed the being of light had changed to a small woman wearing orange and yellow standing before him.
“I am glad you could find the emotion of joy. My work here is done.” and she vanished in the sky. The human, now with the emotion of joy inside him, sought out for the being of sorrow...
The sun was overhead by the time the human made it to the cave at the base of the mountain. With one foot in the opening, he could hear the faint cry of a female. Sobbing and all. He called out.
“Oh being of sorrow, I am a human whom could never frown. I seek your aid in sharing your pain with me so I may understand.” The woman stopped crying. She slowly got up. Her long, blue kimono and hair slowly drifted up before she turned around to face the human. Her front face only had a hole instead of anything on it. But she could still talk.
“Sorrow. A feeling that balances with joy and fear. Sorrow is the key emotion to all humans who wish to understand one another and feel for their loss or pain. Without sorrow, everyone would never care for one another. I can help you, but...I lost something very important to me. My necklace fell at the bottom of the lake and was smashed into pieces. Please bring back my necklace.” the woman turned from the human who bowed before taking his leave. The lake that was not too far from the entrance was long and wide. He had no time to take his clothes off and instead dived instantly into the cold water. He swam to the bottom of the lake, attempting to find any sign of the necklace. He caught sight of a group of loose beads and headed over to grab them. But some fish passed right by and began picking at the beads one by one. He had to work fast! The human batted at the fish to shoo them off. But even then, he could only gain one bead. The human felt as if he failed. A weight was slowly pressing on his heart.
So he returned to the woman, sopping wet, and holding in his hand the only bead left. He extended the bead to the woman, his eyes drifting from her.
“I am sorry. I was only able to get one. I had failed you and...I feel as if pain has hit my heart. I know the necklace meant a lot to you.” The human slowly frowned. The being took the only bead as her face slowly formed once more. She was more beautiful than the story claimed. Her eyes drifted from the bead to the human. She bowed to him.
“I thank you for bringing my necklace back. It was a gift from my long lost husband whom drowned in the lake. He never did return. But I know now that the necklace was true. You have felt a feeling of sorrow for one's own loss and pain from your so called failure. You understand what it means to be sad and filled with grief now. My work is done.” And soon, she melded with in the wall as a cave drawing. The human, now filled with sorrow and joy, had one more task to complete...but first, he had to dry off.
Night slowly approached the land. The howl of wolfs warned of wandering people to be on the look out. The human traversed the dark and gloomy forest to find the being of fear. It wasn't until he came across a shrine with a bell that he had found the being. It was clad in a shadowy mist, protecting it's identity as the thing opened it's yellow eyes to the human. The human once more bowed to the being.
“Oh being of fear, I am a human whom could never scream. I seek your aid in scaring me and giving me something to fear.” the entity spoke in a low but soothing dark voice.
“Humans without fear are dead already. Without fear to balance joy and sorrow, many would of jumped off cliffs and killed themselves due to no warning at all. For it is fear that grants you the ability to be cautious about your surrounding. For this task, I want you to go out and grab the hair from a silver wolf. No weapons at all.” A suicide mission! The human, agreed and walked into the dark forests for the wolf. Many times had he spot the silver wolf and many more had the grey ones closed in on him. The human took twenty minutes to finally confront the wolf he sought for. The silver wolf growled and readied for an attack. The human prepared himself and waited. Once the wolf lunged at the human, the human quickly dodged his attack. The human took his chance by grabbing the wolf's tail and pulling off some hair. It was not the smartest of moves. For the wolf soon went berserk and chased after the human. The human, feeling as if his life was on the line, ran like the wind and through the trees to make it to the shrine once more. His heart was racing. His palms sweating. And overall, he was afraid. He did not want to look behind him and only looked forward. Just as the wolf was closing in on the human, the wolf suddenly stopped. The human made it back to the shrine and caught his breath. The entity extended one long appendage to grab the hair of the wolf and examined it.
“Amazing. You have done what many others lost and arm for. Tell me, would you ever do it again?” The human looked up at the being and managed to tell of the adrenaline he had.
“Nay! In all my life, I never felt such confusion! I could of died this day! I could of lost a part of my body! It was a stupid action in the first place-” Then the entity interrupted.
“And you were scared. Scared to die. Scared to look back. Fright keeps you from making a mistake twice. And you indeed have felt the shock and fright of fear itself. My work here is done- but I shall take you to the safer part of the forest.” The entity slowly moved over the human to cover his body and bring him out of the forest. The human, whom was scared, closed his eyes and only opened when he felt the breeze of the midnight wind.
As the early morning sun began to rise, the humans of the village started their routine like any other day. But today, the human whom left to find his emotions, soon returned from his journey.
“Fellow Humans! I have danced with the sunflowers and felt joy! I went to the bottom of the sea to retrieve a lost item, and was filled with sorrow for the owner! I nearly died to gain hair from a silver wolf and live to never do it again out of fear! I return, as a human once again!” he cried. The villagers were happy to hear their fellow man was no longer emotionless. For the human with no emotions, now could smile, frown or scream.
“Without Joy, one would always doubt life”
“Without Sorrow, one would always be rude to another of their kin”
“Without Fear, one would never understand the consequences of their actions”
For that is what makes a human, human.
