In ancient times, long before the birth of Celestia, before the dawn of the alicorn, that land that would someday become Equestria was known as Herlia. This ancient Equestria is much different from the one we know and is the home of young Lucky and his family. It is a time of great swordsponies, terrifying creatures, powerful magicians, strange artifacts, and legendary warriors. But what do things of this nature matter to a young farmpony such as him? A fighter, maybe, but a warrior? That's a pretty far stretch. However the winds of fortune are blowing in his direction, and he may soon embark on a journey unlike any he could have ever fathomed. But how was this role thrust upon him? What adventures will it lead him and his friends to? That's for us to find out!

So I'm not too good at setting up a fancy introduction, as you can tell, but I think you guys get the idea xp Also, it should probably be noted that I did this rp in another guild that was non-pony before, and I've done what I could to ponify it.

Here are the rules:
- No Cybering. (Romance is okay though)
- Do not kill someone's character without their permission. (Don't be a d**k!)
- Try to avoid too many overused plot elements. (I know it might be tough sometimes in a fantasy roleplay, but lets do our best to be original.)
- No Alicorns please. (Note the phrase "before the dawn of the alicorn" in the opening paragraph)

Name: Dusk Sprinter

Age: 18

Sex: Male

Breed: Pegasi

Cutie Mark: A fancy sword and a plain pencil crossed over a plain white piece of paper

Description: A very dark blue stallion, with wings larger than average. His mane is a two-tone black and dark blue (although not as dark as his coat). His mane is parted in the middle over his head, the inside being blue and the rest being black. He has a medium length tail that is black with streak of the blue in it.

Occupation: He is mostly a sellsword, but that's only when prospective employers are willing to make the trek to his out of the way home.

Residence: Dusk lives on one of the slopes overlooking the Everfree Forest.

Alignment: Dusk is a very good pony, holding himself to high values.

Bio: He is a strong pony, constantly honing his skill with a short sword he holds in his mouth, along with a strong bow he is able to notch and draw with his wings. He is graceful while moving, but when talking regularly to other ponies and/or creatures he tends to be awkward in conversation. But he is also a writer, trying his hand at poetry and writing while on the road.
Also, it is at his home that he treks down into the forest on a daily basis to confront monsters to improve his skill with weapons, and every once in awhile he hikes a little farther up the mountains, not only to contest the more hardy creatures of the mountains, but also to take in the beautiful view of the mountains combined with the forest that helps him relax and write.

Sunlight came flooding in through Lucky's window, waking him from a deep sleep. "Oh man...What time is it?" he asked to himself, setting up in his bed. It was just before 11:00 in the morning. Under normal circumstances he wouldn't have slept in so late, but strange dreams had kept him up late into the night. With a yawn he hopped out of bed and shook his mane out of his face. He stepped out of his room, and into the large den of the small hut he shared with his cousin and uncle. Their house was a quaint, circular cottage with 3 bedrooms, and a massive middle room that served as their den, kitchen, and dining room. There was a large wood-burning stove, a fireplace, a cold storage unit, and a dining table with chairs; that was about it. Lucky called out to his uncle, "Dad, you here?" He looked around, seeing no one. Now where could he be? Lucky thought to himself. He thought about making himself a quick breakfast, but after a moment decided against it. Hopfully Jupiter won't be too pissed at me for being late! He pulled on his shoes and went out the front door, locking it behind him as he left. After a few minutes he arrived at the small grove on the outskirts of town, ready to meet with his sister. "Jup! Sorry I'm late! Hey Jup!" Looking around he saw no sign of his older sibling. "That's weird...Jup's never late..."

The sun was already high in sky by the time June had begun to walk down the long trail leading to the forest on the outskirts of Merco. "Hopefully Lucky won't be too pissed at me," she thought to herself. "Not that it would matter," she chuckled. It wasn't long until she reached the heavily wooded area, and after that a clearing through the thicket. As she moved a few brances out of her way she spied her younger brother. He was leaning against a treetrunk and, as she predicted, was not looking very happy at all. She raised her hand and called out to him, "Lucky! Lucky!"

The sound of Jupiter's voice brought Lucky out of his daze. He looked up just as his sister was coming through the thicket, he spat out the twig that he was chewing on and rose to his hooves; dusting himself off as he did so. "Well it's about damn time! What kept you so long sis? You ain't afraid of dueling me are you?" he sneered at her. Lucky took a moment to look her over. Jupiter was never late for anything and he had a strange feeling that something big was going on. He couldn't tell for sure, but something seemed different about her, something he couldn't quite put his finger on. He decided to cut the games and asked her a serious question. "Seriously though Jup, what kept you? You gotta new client or something?" He turned towards the tree that he was sitting under. It had a large hole in its side, and inside was a large bag. He reached in and pulled out the bag, unfastening the knot of rope tied around the end. Out from the bag came out two wooden sparring swords. As he tossed one over to Jupiter he asked a final question, "by the way, you know where dad's at?"

Rising with the crack of dawn, Dusk opened his door to the brilliant sight of the sun pushing itself above the peaks of the mountains. The bright light bounced off the snow, throwing up an impenetrably bright wall above him. With a content sigh, he grabs his gear and trudges down into the forest. Flying high into the sky, he takes out his bow and allows himself into a freefall. Nocking an arrow, he quickly begins a torrent of arrows at various targets he has set up on the ground. When he is a bare few feet above ground, he flares his wings, stalling his dive and gently lowering himself to the ground. Going around the various targets, he looked at disgust at the one arrow of the many that was just out off center. Any performance like that out in the field could cost him his job. Collecting his arrows, he began to head deeper into the forest, drawing his short sword and prepared for anything. The untamed animals of the forest had a strong disliking of anything encroaching their territory. He notices the presence of something stalking him. A deep voice rumbles up from behind, "There you are. And living up to your reputation"

Jupiter cheerfully stuck her tongue out at her younger brother's frustrated question. "Hey don't b***h to me baby brother, unlike you I actually put some bread on the table!" She tried her best to act fine, but on the inside Jupiter was deeply troubled. She realized that Lucky must have been able to tell, because the next moment his question turned serious. "Well if you must know I do have a potential new client. I was on my way here when I was stopped by him." She bit her lip, wondering the best way to go on. Finally she decided to just come out and tell him. "It's uh...Actually really important Lucky..." She said, her mood turning somber. "It's about the tribe of Griffons that want to take over..." After a moment she added "Theres no need to worry though. It's mostly silly politics; but I may need your help. She smiled. The smile, like the words she said about her new mission not being serious, was a lie.

Her thoughts turn to the Griffons, and her mission. About a year ago a tribe of warrior Griffons, skilled in the ways of magic and hailing from unknown lands arrived in Herlia. Their demands were simple: the king of Herlia step down from the throne, and nopony gets hurt. Their request was denied, and they quietly left the king's court. However they didn't venture far, they set up camp near Herlia's capital city, and restated their demands every few weeks. So far they haven't turned openly hostile, but they also made it clear that they were dangerous. In the beginning, several parties of knights had been sent to ask them to leave. None were ever heard from again. From then on, it was decided that the best way to deal with them, would be to leave them be until they left. It was an uneasy truce, but a truce none the less. It seems that now thats gonna change.. With a sigh she pushed the thoughts out of her head, and snatched the wooden sword as Lucky tossed it to her. "No I haven't seen him, but it's time to put that BS aside for now." She took her stance and smirked at Lucky. "Now defend yourself!" With that, she charged at him, sword raised.

Whipping around, Dusk came face to face with a large, pure black griffon. An eyepatch covering his left eye, and a massive rippled scar travelled up from his neck, over his right eye, and ending just above his brow. "I had heard rumors of the prowess of the mountain hermit with his arrow and blade, but that was truly impressive. Not even the Rock Smashers (lets just call them an elite unit of the griffon military?) are able to attempt such a feat. I believe you will do perfectly."
With slight trepidation, Dusk offered forward a hesitant reply "May I help you my fine, feathered friend? If you pay enough, I'll be with you to the end."
"I have a special task for you. Your pay will be subject to how well you perform the mission. But if you fail..." The griffon let his silence hang in the air ominously, a significant enough warning in itself.
Sizing the griffon up as a potential opponent, multiple plans of action coming to mind and being scrapped in the mere seconds it takes him to answer, "Exactly what kind of job are we talking about here?"

As Jup mentioned the Griffon Tribe, Lucky's blood turned cold. In the entire time since they had been in Herlia he had never seen them, but he had heard stories of their demonic ways and rituals; and of their evil leader Bloodbeak. Just the thought of them was enough to send shivers down his spine. Jup's answers only produced more questions, but Lucky shook the thoughts away, and prepared himself as Jupiter attacked. Lucky charged forward to meet her. Their blades locked and he wondered how long the duel would last, he hoped to change the current losing streak he is on. All his concentration is focused on his sword and her's. Clearing his mind, he continued with this special bond he and his sister share.

The battle lasted roughly thirty minutes or so; by the end of it Jup and him stood panting. "Looks like it's a draw then," he laughs, "damn sis, at this rate I'm never gonna get another win against you again!" He wiped the sweat off his brow and gently collapsed to the ground. After a while he got up and dusted himself off. "Hey I think it's about time to get going, it's getting close to noon. We might want to see what dad's up to." As he says this, he wonders to himself if she may already have an idea where their old man is. His mind is still on Jupiter's mysterious new mission, and her distance is bothering him; he also knows that it's useless to ask. She'll tell him what's up when she's ready. He puts his sword back in his pack and waits for Jup to toss him her's.

When their little match was over, Jupiter stood tired and smiling. "Hey don't sweat it Lucky! You're getting better every day." She dusted herself off and set down on her haunches in the soft grass, waiting for her breath to fully return. "Why soon, I may even have to start going full out against you!" She laughed and stretched out her limbs. Her thoughts, however, were far less confident than her words. Yeah right, who do you think you're fooling Jup? You haven't had to go easy on him in months. A few quiet moments passed before Lucky was ready to go. Jupiter handed him her sword, and watched as he put the swords back into their hiding place. "You're right though, it is time for us to move. Me, you, and dad need to talk as soon as we can." Her voice and thoughts had once again lost their cheerfullness, and without another word she began to walk down the worn path to town. As they walked back to their home, Jupiter was too lost in her thoughts to talk to Lucky.

When they finally arrived at their quaint little hut, they could see their father waiting for them at the door. Mercury Breeze and his daughter shared the same grave look when things got serious, and right now he and Jupiter were both wearing it. Jup nodded to him as she and Lucky reached the front door. "Has he arrived yet father?" she asked, her attention turning towards the window of their hut; trying to see if she could make out anyone on the inside. Mercury nodded and looked towards Lucky.
"Aye, that he has Jup. Lucky, I'm going to need you to stay outside for a little while. Your sister and I have business we need to take care of real quick. We'll send for you as soon as we can." Jupiter looked towards Lucky, seeing the confusion and hurt in his eyes. She knew that he didn't want to be kept out of the loop like this, but he would do as told for the time being. Without another word Jup followed her father inside, leaving Lucky outside by himself.

When they were inside Jup spotted the stallion she had met earlier today sitting at the table in their large main room. He was dressed in elaborate purple and green armour, and the sheid strapped to his back bore the royal Herlia crest. Jupiter and her father took their seats next to him. Mercury wiped his brow and said with a sigh,
"So it's come to this...The Griffons are no longer willing to wait, and the sacred shields and helm must be retrieved..." The royal knight, Silver Lance, is just as somber as Mercury. "You knew just as well as we did that the prophecy was bound to come true one day Mercury. Now that their patience has run dry we can wait no longer. You have to send the boy. He's the only true heir to the throne, thus making him the only one that can handle the items."

Mercury's eyes flashed with annoyance. He looked up at the knight, his voice becoming harder. "You don't need to remind me Silver, I know damn well what must be done. It's just that he still seems far to young to begin this quest..." As he trails off, Jupiter felt her face flush with color. Upset that her father still contuinued to baby his nephew in such a way. "Father, I was nearly half his age when you sent me away for training. I may not be able to physically handle these items, but I still have more than enough experience for me and him!" She noticed that her hands had become balled up into fists. She took a breath, and released her grip. "Besides dad...He's a quick learner, and great with a blade. Already in just a few short years, he's nearly bested me..." Mercury looked away from Silver and towards his daughter. "I know it is useless for me to worry Jupiter, but a father can't help but to care about his children. Frankly, I still find it hard to believe that we've raised royal blood into such a quiet life."

After Mercury spoke, Silver Lance laughed a reply. "Isn't it though? Lucky had been raised in such a different manner than his sister. Though I suppose is was for their own good that they were split apart. Jupiter's heart nearly skiped a beat when she heard this. Most of what was being discussed she had heard her whole life, but this was the first she had ever known about Lucky having a blood-related sibling. "What do you mean he has a sister? How come you never told me about this father?" Mercury looked to his daughter's surprise with a smile. "I'm sorry Jup, but I had meant to mention this a long time ago. I guess I just never got around to it. Before he could say anything else, Silver interupted. "Allow me to explain Ms. Breeze. Lucky's grandparents had two boys; Lucky's father and uncle. When Lucky's father and your aunt, Lucky's mom, and your father's wife were murdered, Lucky's other uncle wanted to take the girl as his own so that the babies could be in separate places. That way, should any enemy look to find the children and finish the job, there was a chance that one could always remain hidden. Silver Lance paused a moment before adding, "Why does it bother you so Ms. Breeze? You're not jealous are you?" At these words Jupiter's faced flushed red. Partly because she was insulted by Silver Lance's remark, and partly because he was right. As far as she was concerned Lucky was her baby brother, and she was the only one that had the right to call herself his sister. Her father must have guessed what she was thinking, because before she could say anything he put his hand over her shoulder. It's probably time for you to go out and get him don't you think? Jupiter looked up at him and nodded. She then pushed her chair back and preceded to walk outside.

The unlikely duo stroll quickly through the forest, Dusk's gear strapped into place, and not making a single noise. He ghosts over the ground as his large counterpart crashes about beside him.
"So what is the quest I've been set to task, might I ask?"
"In my species' travels through your lands, we have encountered rumors of four objects of immense power. Only now have we acquired information that may lead to more substantial results than mere rumors."
"And yet you turn to a pony for your work. Why not use griffons to lurk?"
"Because ponies are a lot less conspicuous in your lands. If we hire the right ponies, then we get what we want and they get what they want."
"Exactly what kind of pay, may I say, may I see today?"
"You won't see a bit of it until you bring me those objects."
"What four objects am I to find? I want pay now if it's going to be a grind."
"You're too find a mask and three shields. When the holders of these items use them in tandem, no force known to either our kinds could stop them."

The two finally reach the edge of the the forest, a town not too far away from them. A single house with a figure standing outside stands between them and the town.
(It's my pleasure. You should thank Sky though. She's the one that asked me to join.)

Lucky waited patiently outside of his home as Jupiter and his father talked. He thought that he had heard them mention something about someone else being there, but he couldn't be sure. After awhile he decided to take a peek through their window and see what there was to see. Sure enough, sitting down at their table was Jupiter, their father, and a mysterious pony he had never seen before. Lucky's eyes widened as he realized that this new stranger, was a Herlia knight. "What the hells going on?" Lucky said to himself with a frown. Suddenly Jupiter began to look really upset. I'd give anything to know what they were talking about, he thought, watching as the knight began to speak to Jup. Moments later Jupiter sat up and began to walk towards their hut's front door. Lucky quickly left the window and resumed his seat at the door's step.

When Jupiter opened the door, her face looked pale and drained of color. Seeing his strong, older sister like this nearly brought tears to his eyes. She didn't say anything, instead she nodded to him and began to walk inside the house. Lucky followed her, closing the door behind him. As he entered, his uncle stood up and pulled out his chair for Lucky to sit in.
"Good afternoon son, please have a seat." "Dad what's going on?" he asked with frustration. "Who is this guy, what's with the secrecy?" Tell me something!" He waited for an answer. After a moment his uncle and the pony in armour exchanged looks at each other. "My name is Silver Lance," the man answered in a strong, noble voice. "And we have much to go over."

The next few hours were spent telling Lucky things that he never dreamed he would have to hear. Tales of the death of his true parents, things about a sister he had never known he had, tales of a prophecy given in the wake of his parent's death, and most of all tales of a world's fate which was now in his hands. Just the news of his parents, and his true identity as prince of Herlia was enough to overwhelm him, but that wasn't all there was to hear; no not by far. Apparently this prophecy had told of the Griffon's arrival, and of ancient objects that would vanquish them. Most of this talk Lucky was too preoccupied with his own thoughts to hear, but he did make out a bit about some shields and a helmet. Suddenly everything began to make sense to him. Now he knew why Jupiter had been sent to that horrible camp all those years ago, now he knew why she had chosen to share his knowledge with him, and now he knew why his cousin and uncle had never told him of his parents. It was because Lucky had needed to become strong for the quest that awaited him, for he was one of the only residents of Herlia that could weild these sacred objects; and Jupiter was to serve as his mentor and protection on the journey.

When they were finally done speaking Lucky stared in silence at the table. After a while he looked up at his father and Silver Lance. "So basically you're telling me it's time to pack my s**t and hit the road. There's a country that needs saved, and I'm the poor b*****d that has to go." His father's face shown that he was shocked by his adopted son's bluntness
"Yes Lucky, but you shouldn't be so disheartened by it!" Silver Lance quickly added to Mercury's words. "Yes Prince Lucky, this is a great honor you've had bestowed upon you. At his words, Lucky laughed. "Oh please good knight save your honor! Lucky then pushed his chair back, and sat up. "I pass." He didn't say another word. Instead he walked from his seat and out the front door. The rest of them were too shocked to stop him, but he did make out his father calling after him as he left. "What do you mean you pass?!! Lucky! Lucky!!!"

"Where am I to find these items?"
"You will find out soon enough. For now, we are returning to my base camp, where you and my superiors will discuss your payment."
Looking forward once he's done talking with the equine, he spots another reprehensible example of this pony ilk. Hanging back, he leaves the shy pony at his side to do all the talking. Which was just as well. This pony he was hiring was asking entirely too many questions that he had orders not to answer. Not to mention that the form of payment he would be receiving may be unorthodox in this land...
Being forced to talk to the stranger, Dusk moves ahead of the griffon slightly, sighing at having to associate once more with the world once more. "Hello friend, are you one on which we can depend?"
