The shelves loomed high, but Sweetie knew how to navigate them. It was just a matter of gripping the rungs on the side and hoisting herself up paw by paw. She scurried up the side with little effort and found herself facing a pile of bird seed. It had spilled from an overturned bag and, if one took the time to pick off the moldy parts, it made a decent meal for a hungry rat.
Sweetie started picking through it, looking for her favourite sunflower seeds. She didn't mind the other seeds, but they tended to catch in her teeth. Once she gathered a small pile of them, she sat down comfortably and wrapped her tail around herself as she gnawed on one. She could see far from the spot, but there wasn't much movement.
Sometimes Sweetie grew lonely. She could hear and smell and see the presence of others rats, but she hadn't had the fortune to run into any of them. And when it came down to it... she was a bit too shy to go out and find them. At least she had a safe place to stay and food to eat.

Come Here Girl trotted rather jauntily to the edge of the shelves, intent on a birdseed snack for herself. Sniffing at the air and not sensing danger, she too ascended the rungs, whiskers twitching in anticipation. As she reached the birdseed shelf, however, she became aware that someone else was already up there, eating sunflower seeds. The dark-furred female poked her snout up over the edge and studied the other rat for a second. She then hopped up onto the shelf, not rushing toward the seeds, but staying a bit back. "Hello there," she greeted the stranger heartily, her ears forward in friendly interest.

The sound of the sunflower shell coming apart between her teeth was interrupted the the sound of a second body coming up on the shelf. Sweetie stopped eating and peered at the new comer. She seemed more than friendly, so Sweetie returned the stranger's greeting with an equally friendly one of her own.
"Hello! Would you like some seed?" she asked, more than happy to share. There was more seed there than she could eat by herself and she was in the mood for company. Which, she had to admit, was a little unusual as of late.
"My name is Sweetie," she said gently, encouraging Come Here Girl to come closer.

((ooc: Does Sweetie have, say, her own "territory" yet, at these shelves, or are the bird seed shelves currently an unclaimed/open area?)) "Yes, I would! Thank you," Come Here Girl replied, trotting forward happily. There being plenty of seed here, she felt only camaraderie for those of her fellow rats who did not seem hostile, rather than any urge to claim a particular food source.
As she approached, she angled herself slightly to show off the symbol dyed on her shoulder, but also to conceal her lack of a tail. Though the latter didn't bother her, she didn't want to risk scaring off this new acquaintance by revealing her rather unusual appearance.

((Sweetie has a little nest in the corner of the shelf, but she hasn't put a claim to any territory. ))
Sweetie was delighted by her new companion's enthusiasm. It was definitely a pleasant change from the usual, melancholic reverie that she usually took on as of late. In fact, Come Here Girl's friendliness almost reminded her of her lost sisters... Oh, how she missed them!
Part of the reason she kept to the high shelf was the small hope that maybe, just maybe, she would see her mother and sisters someday.
Sweetie cleaned her whiskers briefly, bringing her thoughts back to the present, and resumed her nibbling on her sunflower seed as she watched Come Here Girl. She was striking, with her dark coat and the bright blaze of while on her face... and was that a dye pawprint on her shoulder?
"Where did you get that?" Sweetie asked, motioning her nose at Come Here Girl's shoulder. "It looks nice!"
From the angle, Sweetie couldn't see Come Here Girl's lack of tail, so he paid no attention to it.

"This?" Come Here Girl indicated her dye mark. "I got it from a friend of mine, named Bew. She's taken up residence in the area where my cagemates and I used to live." She gave a happy little twirl, proud of the marking and forgetting caution with regards to her natural lack of a tail.
