So you know how Korra is really good with the physical side of bending, but awful at the spiritual side?
I keep coming back to this thought that the loss of spirituality is like, the major force of imbalance within the entire Avatar universe at the moment, that Korra's problem is in fact the problem that the entire world faces.
Bending in Avatar was portrayed as a very spiritual, respected, cultural art. The bending styles reflecting the culture of the people, people took pride in it, built rituals around it.
But in Korra, bending has changed. At least in Republic City, where cultures have blended and changed and been forgotten. Bending is very different. It's a Pro-Sport. It's used by gangsters. It's used by cheap labor. It feels like the ART of it is gone, that the spiritual connection that benders have with their bending is gone, and thus: the imbalance within the world.
And maybe that's why it's so EASY for Amon to take away people's bending, while it was so HARD for Aang. Ozai, while a d**k, was in tune with the spiritual nature of bending. People these days in Korra? Not at all.
I keep feeling like a major theme of Korra is going to be how to regain that spiritual side of bending, not only for Korra, but for all Benders.

I never thought of it that way, but now that you mention it, it seems really legit.
I think you're very much right. Bending in Republic City has become a tool instead of a gift, and I think spirituality may be an important theme in the series sometime in the future.

It also makes it interesting that we have Korra with her spiritual-bending crisis, up against Amon, who is claiming at least to be speaking to Spirits.

that's a really good point. I know even when Amon talked about the spirits, it felt out of place. I had almost forgotten about the spiritual side myself until Amon started chi bending.
I wonder if the people of Republic City remember the stories of how bending started. I'm sure they've forgotten.

Times are a changing...
But see... we have only seen Republic City... in Korra's time...
Fire Nation, Earth Kingdom, Water Tribes are still basically the same... the fashion might be a little more modern... but from what I see... only Republic City has this "mixed culture where all other cultures are lost" thing.
They have a new culture... a new way of life...
But I suspect the separate nations still have their traditions and spiritual beliefs. Republic City is just one small place that is a mix of all things.
And we have only seen a few people in the whole of Republic City... You are generalizing when it's only been 4 episodes... wait until season 1 is over to see if there is other spiritual people other then the new monks under Tenzin. Remember there was a whole dining room of them. There is definitely more spirituality then you think...

Also, Republic City is the largest city in the world, bigger even than Ba Sing Se. It's likely that it now stands as the balance between the four elements, and if it doesn't become spiritually connected it could affect the entire world.

But the lack of heritage cultures, and the commodification of bending seem pretty well established.

It had been announced by the creators when The Legend of Korra was first announced that it would be a mini-series that would only take one season. However, further researching this fact, they recently came out and said by popular demand there will now instead be two seasons.

When Korra finally discovers her spirituality, I think that's when she will be able to airbend. Once she is able to airbend, I think she will have the upperhand on Amon. I see airbending being the most unique of the four techniques. She'll have the skies as her field while Amon is stuck on the ground if they ever have their fight.
