In Kemurigakure there was a white poplar tree in a clearing. No other trees grew near it and not one of the shinobi who lived there would dare to climb it or to break its branches for firewood. From each tiny twig hung metal bells and paper tags tied on with red strings. A few of the bells were actual silver; more were rough beaten iron or cheap tin that had already started to rust. Regardless whether the inked characters were in the elegant calligraphy of the nobles or the rounded handwriting of a child they all wanted the same thing: To be heard.
A cold wind starts to blow.
Komodo Hiroshi looks up as the wind shakes the branches and the bells start to chime. Each has a unique peal and instead of a silver-throated chorus the noise is an increasing discord.
The corners of his mouth drag downwards as a frown creases his brow.
A solitary leaf parts company from its branch and spirals towards the ground. Instinctively he traps it between his fingers. The top of the leaf is a vibrant green but its underside is a velvety white.
Hiroshi softly drags his finger over it. Its papery feel makes him think of a message left unwritten or maybe he is simply unable to read it.
As it lies in his hand he can’t help but wonder at how much he has changed. His fingernails are claws in all but name, they have grown long and strong and he had given up shredding gloves in an attempt to hide them. Other shinobi had started to treat him with a wary respect ever since he started to walk around with them bare.
He had outgrown his simple shells of spiked armour and traded in his shorts and black t-shirt for a Sunagakure styled garment the dull unfriendly orange of igneous rocks.
As he pulls his hood back up the patchy sunlight gleams off his bright hair. It was still a cherry red at the roots and a golden blond at the tips but he had ceased to augment the natural colours with showy hair dyes and overall the impression he gave would be similar to that of one of the Paths of Pain if there was more than a handful of people left alive who could remember what Pain looked like.
Whereas before he had swaggered like her had to prove he was strongest his steps now were as measured and perfect as a lion’s tread. He moved with the laidback stroll of one who knew that he was the strongest.
As he left behind the tree he smiled (which stretched the crinkled scar at the corner of his mouth) but it never reached his slit pupilled eyes.
They were reptilian eyes, as old as flame rocked canyons, eyes that sound watch the world go by.
You could drown in eyes like that.
‘Would Kaze be able to recognise his hot-blooded lizard now?’ Hiroshi idly wonders as he wanders along the rough animal track of a path. He still had that fervent energy that had categorized him in his early life but he had managed to channel it inwards.
In short Hiroshi had grown up.
“Sorry I’m late you see this bird-” He starts as he steps into another small clearing and eases down his hood.
“That’s a damn lie and we all know it!” His students simultaneously protest as their sensei looks sheepish and rubs the back of his head.
Well maybe he hadn’t grown up that much.
_______________________________________________________________
Fireworks were exploding over the village.
If nothing else the people of Kemurigakure knew how to party even if they didn’t do it in their own village.
A few of the daimyo had complained about that and a few of the older ninjas had been suspicious but the food was good as was the drink and there were plenty of both.
The chunin exams were normally very dignified, after all it was a diplomatic meeting of military powers but this tiny speck of land seemed to be saying, as loudly as possible ‘We are here!’
Another firework explodes in a magnificent starburst of red and blue and throws multi-coloured lights over the packed streets.
Streamers and paper lanterns hung from every doorway and the shop fronts were all bustling with activity, selling jewellery or weapons or strange and exotic foods from a hot iron plate. Most of those stalls had Akamichi clan members outside haggling for recipes.
Every crossroads had a stage where performers dances or sung or put on puppet shows and occasionally a visiting shinobi would take the stage to challenge them.
The air was filled with the happy babbling or a lot of people getting a bit fatter and a bit poorer.
Yoru quite liked it. His childhood hadn’t included many things that were pretty but useless and most of the festival was completely new to him.
A fountain of yellow sparks leaps up above the rooftops and makes him grin. Imagine an explosion that wasn’t meant to hurt people but look pretty! What a rare thing it was.
He bought a white plastic mask made to look like an ANBU and stopped at every food stall he could see to buy a little something for Doku.
He had even seen the Hokage at a noodle bar with this village’s elected leader; a man that looked like he had escaped from one of Father’s labs.
This whole exam thing looks like it might be fun…
___________________________________________________________
This was the first year Kemurigakure had been allowed to host the chunin exams. It had been one of the true hidden villages, little more than a large mercenary organization. The Hokage had persuaded the other villages by means of political coercion and straight out guile to allow Kemurigakure to be recognised at as nation; it allowed the shinobi that fought to be recognised instead of simply fading away into legend.
Now he was increasingly convinced his decision was the right one, after all any village who’s leader would let him hold a meeting in a noodle bar was surely an ally of all that was true and good in this world.
“So you’re only entering three teams?” Naruto asks through a mouth of pork flavoured noodles.
The two ANBU at his side shift their weight from foot to foot nervously. This situation was a tactical nightmare. There was no way they could keep an eye on all the crowd at the same time and the Hokage had flat out refused more bodyguards.
The possibly future Kemurikage only had one body guard, perhaps out of a wish to keep things friendly, but they look like they could lift an ox-cart in each carapace covered hand. Akira’s child lets his long scaly tail coil around the bar stool as he struggles to grip his chopsticks.
The Brood or The Multitude as they were sometimes known was rapidly making their way towards being a ninja clan. The horrible mixture of insect, serpent and human never looked the same but was always sentient and always hungry.
“We are a small village Hokage-sama.” Akira says somewhat nervously. “And being a shinobi is a dangerous occupation. We have few students.”
“Still if they get knocked out in the first round.” Naruto’s chopstick stabs through a slice of roast pork. “Then you’re villages first chunin exams might lose you the respect of the other villages…and the funding of the Daimyo.” “Oh I don’t think that’s going to happen.” It’s impossible to tell between his bandaged mouth and dark glasses but Akira is smiling. “They have been training awfully hard.”
“So has Konoha’s genins. I have a feeling their going to do great this year.” Naruto grins.
“Then again I doubt we’re the only ones that can make such a claim.” Akira adds nervously, looking into his bowl to avoid Naruto’s enthusiasm.
A comet of green streaks through the air before exploding in orange sparks.
“It’s getting rather late isn’t it? I hope the entrants aren’t getting too caught up in the festivities.” Akira changes the subject. “The entry forms are due in by the end of the day and the first test begins tomorrow.”
“I look forward to seeing it.” Naruto says and he means it not just because he wants to see how Konoha’s genins perform but because there is the sneaking feeling that something is indeed suspicious.
Kemurigakure needed watching.

In Kemurigakure there was a white poplar tree. From its branches hung silver bells and one fresh green branch trembled in the wind. The five bells sound a tiny chord. The five notes are repeated in a different tone on the stringed instrument. Seemingly satisfied the wind dies down.
“Biwa-kun hurry up.” His sensei demands of him, not unkindly. The youth spends a few moments staring at the tree to make sure the entertainment is truly over before clutching his precious instrument close and catching up to his teacher . It was unwise to spend too long staring at anything in the forest. Originally it had been planted to defend the shinobi of the village, minds tended to wander there which had suited the village’s defender at that time rather well but was an annoyance to everyone else, including people trying to go somewhere. Out of the blue objects would suddenly demand to be looked at which is why any journey had to start early to be sure of arriving on time.
Moving at the same time lazily without purpose and rather fast Biwa catches up to his team mates.
With over 80% of his body covered in clean linen bandages it was impossible to tell what he really looked like but the way the thin strips of cloth clung closely to his skin suggested the curves of muscles and the lithe build of a ninja exceptional in speed.
Of his face only one eye was visible. It was the usual dark grey, nearly black of many clans that at a distance seemed indistinguishable from the pupil. His hair, a few spikes escaping from the bandages, was black too. His choice of clothing was unremarkable, a blue shirt and grey pants, the kind of outfit selected each day by those who never worry about thinking what to wear.
More interesting was the fact that he wore no shuriken pouches or kunai holsters. He carried no sword or nunchaku or any concealed weapons at all. The only thing he carried with him was his instrument, a four stringed lute the size of a club and shaped elegantly like a fan and its plectrum. The Gakubiwa is inlaid with coloured ivory plates in spring green and light pink. They form a simplistic decoration of sakura flowers.
The plectrum was cream coloured ivory.
Both elegantly crafted for their purpose, a craftsman would weep at the thought of such beautiful tools being used in something as crude as combat. The heavy wooden instrument would never serve as a club or its plectrum as a shuriken.
He had been named after it, as many of the parentless children of Kemurigakure came to be named, Biwa for the instrument he carried with him and Gagaku for the music he played with it. He was also a type of ninja not recognised anywhere outside of Kemurigakure. Biwa was a bard and he was representing his entire school of ninjutsu in this exam…
“Biwa-kun~!” His female team mate ambushes him from behind and lashes her arms around his neck. “We’re going to win this thing aren’t we?” she purrs in his ear. “Of course.” He replies, turning to face her. “Seeing as you’re so talented maybe we could train together before the start of the exam?” “Sazae it’s my turn to train with Biwa today!” Keiteki protests loudly and the inevitable fight starts. Biwa smoothly pulls himself free of the mess and leaves his two admirers to their squabbles.
Hiroshi watches the mess with a bemused grin. He can’t remember the last time he had two girls fight over him or even one girl for that matter. Something about his boyfriend seemed to drive them off, even when they weren’t officially dating. Possibly the metal arm… Hiroshi interrupts his musing as his student approaches and sits cross-legged on a tree stump then starts to tune his instrument.
“So Biwa, you think you can handle this exam?” He says with a false cheer. His ember coloured eyes are watching the skies. “Yes.” Biwa says simply and testing a few notes. “Even the one on one match.” Hirsohi’s voice becomes soft with concern. Biwa never seemed to fight for himself, what with his team mates effectively serving as bodyguards. “Yes sensei…” Biwa replies equally softly but with a note of bitterness. He is insulted by the remark although he cannot rebuke his sensei for his concerns. “I have been training.” “Tell me…” Hiroshi’s voice drops to a conspirators whisper. “Which one of them do you…?” Biwa, apparently out of the words for the day, merely shrugs. Hiroshi coughs and straightens up. At this time the waited for message finally arrives.
Winging its way through the canopy is a messenger bird; one of Hayato’s great grandchildren Hiroshi was amused to find out. The hawk that had become the perverted Uchiha’s new body had also been a stud breeding male and the famed black hawks of Kemurigakure had been the official messenger bird of the nation for generations.
Hiroshi reads the tiny scrap of paper. With a barely perceptible frown and a short pause he folds it in two and puts it in the pocket of his robe. “Well then.” He announces loudly enough for the rest of his team to hear him. Sazae and Kiteki stop their fighting and shoot dirty looks at each other. Biwa puts his precious instrument away as his team mates pointedly sit either side of him. “The first test of the chunin exam is about to start soon. You’ve all been working very hard and I’m very proud of you.” He smiles as he says this, he truly means it. “You’re going to be representing our entire village in front of the world. Are you going to get out there and show them what you can do?” “Yes sensei.” His students chant. Hiroshi extends his closed fist and his students stack their fists on top of his. “Three, two, one. Team Firestorm!” They recite and break formation. “The first test is in an hour at the Palace of Stars.”
Shizuka Keitiki smiles and wrapped her arms around Biwa’s neck. Her hair was a long luscious red and, mimicking her crush, she had bandages over her arms and legs and well as the left side of her face. She wore silk the colour of wild flowers and chatted continuously, regardless of whom was listening to her or not. She always stated her opinion as loudly as possible.
Kikou Sazae on the other hand had similarly long equally luscious black hair and also had bandaged her arms legs and lower half of her face. She was quieter, more subdued then her team mate although there were earthquakes quieter than Keitiki when she was feeling happy. Her specialty was close combat and her bandages had inked black summoning seals on the wrist for weapons. As they proceeded through the forest to the first test she merely grinned optimistically and leaned against Biwa’s arm while her rival keenly protested the action.
Sero looks over their profiles and sneers. It’s his default expression but in this case he feels it is well deserved. The provider of his information, a jonin in the uniform of a Kusagakure nin, shuffles his feet nervously in worry that he is the source of Sero’s displeasure. “You can go.” He says with a dismissal wave. “About those photos…” the chunin stutters and it silenced by Sero sharply looking up. His eyes are glowing red with the stylized black shuriken of the mangekyou sharingan. Stuttering out a long line of esses the jonin back away, bowing to avoid meeting the pale teenagers eyes. If it wasn’t for that glare he could have broken that stripling brat in two. Instead he was being blackmailed into being his spy. Nonchalantly Sero flicks a photograph at him and the jonin scrambles to pick it up. “There’s the first one.” Sero says, looking over the sheaf of papers in front of him. “You’ll get the other one’s when you’re finished.” As the jonin leaves Sero looks through the other papers. Other than wondering how much of a threat that gakubiwa posed (and after seeing his father’s village he understood the potential for damage sound could do) they appeared no greater than any other team. He had worried about the skills of this new village but so far they looked…manageable. Sero shuffles the papers until he gets to the other Kemurigakure team.
Click. Whirrrrrrr. Click. Whirrrrrrr. Click. Whirrrrrrr. Karakuri was winding his mechanisms. The silver gears spin in unison with the steady tick of a metronome and the click of ratchets catching. Wana watches. Frankly the clipped cleaness of the whole thing impressed him. Giri tried to avoid watching. He cleaned the blade of his katana until it shone like the shootingstar it had been made of. He didn’t particularly like Hideki, regardless of how Kaze-haha had taken him in. After so many years with his god absent Hideki had gone mad. Alright madder. He taps the razor tip of the silver talons on the carved stone in time to the clicking of the gears. Perched on the cold metal shoulder the messenger hawk shuffles uneasily. Karakuri slides shut the acess panel. The ticking is flawlessly silenced. For a few seconds silence reigned. “Palace of Stars. One hour.” Hideki announces. “Who is proctor?” Giri asks as he packs up his precious katana. Hideki remains silent. Even in his conviction of immunity from his soul sucking deities his words were carefully rationed. With his moon pale eyes and equally pale skin he looked more like a porcelain doll than a person. “It’s Tsuru.” Wana replies, pushing up his round glasses so that reflected glare masked his eyes. They had belonged to another ninja a long time ago. How they had been found and given to him was a mystery but he would never get them go. Giri breathes in sharply. “He is a jonin, he has the right to apply.” Wana replies mildly. “Jonin.” Karakuri echoes with a nod. “Why is everyone at jonin rank here totally insane?” Giri mutters under his breath. “Because they’re all missing nin.” Wano points out coolly. Karakuri nods. “Besides it’s time we got going if we want to get to the Palace on time.” “On time.” Karakuri repeats. He never made much of an effort in conversations that weren’t about puppets. In fact he mainly just mimicked whatever Wana had last said in an attempt to fit in. “Giri.” Hideki says and makes a motion with his clawed hand to indicate he should stay behind. Rather reluctantly Giri stays behind as the rest of his team cheerfully abandons him. The carved throne is suddenly empty and there are bright talons at his throat. “Son of my god of smoke and dreams and the god of flames and sin, will you be a god to them?” Hideki asks. The harsh cracking syllables of the dead language fit far better on his lips than those of his normal speech. “I am the god of blades and son of gods and you would do well not to doubt that.” Giri replies in the same tongue. It’s been so long since he learnt it but each word is fresh in his memory. Haha had wanted him to learn it. ”A young god, still vulnerable. You are not the only one of that kind.” It had taken many a while to find out that the gods to Hideki were always powerful ninjas, although not all powerful ninjas were gods. “You will win.” Hideki says. It isn’t an encouragement, it isn’t a question. It is a statement as cold as his touch.
Sero smirks. With his pulled back hair and round lensed glasses the other team’s leader looked like Kabuto when he was younger. Sero therefore instantly slates him for an ‘accidental’ death. Childish it may be but he was suspicious and that was enough for him to kill over…Or possibly he could convince him to join. It would be nice not to have to rely on his own genjutsu for heavy lifting. Sero turns the thought over in his mind like it was a chocolate. He liked having subordinates. Hmmm yes that might work if Kemuri’s reputation was indeed accurate. Yet it was time for him to be going… The Palace of Stars. What a pretentious name.
The Palace of Stars turned out to be gritty tunnel on the dead flanks of the mountainside. In fact many of the genin’s only found it because some Kemuri nin had put up a helpful sign. It said ‘Anyone caught talking, yelling or making other such sounds within the Palace of Stars will be instantly disqualified.’ Sero was in a foul mood. The tunnel had been marked the Shimmering Citadel on his stolen maps and, only after a long time pouring over them trying to find the location of the first test, did he find out they had helpfully included a map on the note. Still he makes an effort to hide this from his fellow genins and his expression is one of good nature. Outside the flecked grey stone tunnel is one of Kemuri teams. One of the girls, with long red hair, is complaining as loudly as possible about the sign. Her team mates patiently wait for her to finish and make no attempt to even pretend they are listening. “Morning.” Sero says politely as he passes them. “Morning.” The dark haired girl replies then pauses for a bit nervously before pressing ahead. “I’m Kikou Sazae, that’s Gagaku Biwa and the girl-that-never-shuts-up is Shizuka Keitiki.” “Hebiken Sero.” The assumed name is ingrained now. The seemingly mummified member of the team stays completely silent. “He isn’t a talker.” Sazae explains. “I don’t suppose a cute Kemuri nin like you might be able to give me a bit of extra information about this exam?” Sero flashes Sazae a winning smile which makes her blush. “Well the proctor’s meant to be a bit…unstable. He’s not good around people.” “Thanks for the heads up.” The cheerful smile is starting to hurt his cheeks. He’s not used to it. “Good luck with the exams.” “With that one I’m going to need it.” Sazae jerks her thumb in the diretion of Keitiki who immediately takes offence. Sero turns to face the tunnel then swiftly and secretly activates his sharingan and scans the tunnel for any misleading genjutsu. To his disappointment there are none. Sero steps into the darkness.
Only a few steps into the tunnel made the light receed., as it faded the rough grey stone came to be replaced with planed wooden boards. Fixed with silver wires to each side of the walkways were glass globes that seemed to be filled with fox fire. They glowed with a silvery blue cold light. Further in the dark stone floor grew darker with water then disappeared entirely under the underground lake, leaving the walkway floating in place. The cavern opened out and filled with lights. Hundreds of glow-worms populated the ceiling and the tiny pinpricks of their light reflected in the calm lake waters. Formed by fire and refined by water sheets of crystal hung from the walls like drapes. From one angle they glowed with light, from another they faded into nothing. It was like being inside the night sky. All were reduced to mere silhouettes by the lantern light and, with all eyes on the cavern, no-one notices that some of the genin’s are holding hands. Lit by three lanterns at the end of the walkway is a vast doorway made of three standing stones. The inlaid runes glow the same blue as the glow-worms and the strange lamps.
By comparison the room beyond is clipped and ugly. Simple flat grey walls in all directions with no furniture at all. The only parts of the room not carved of stone are another sign from the helpful Kemuri nin telling the applicants they can talk now and the large screen set just out of reach.in the wall. It is turned off. Sero spreads some low grade dissent in the ranks for practise. Giri is instantly surrounded by the genin of the Mizu teams in a way that would seem threatening except they were all asking him how to prevent the acrid volcanic smoke from ruining their blades. Biwa’s team was the last to arrive with Keitiki predictably complaning. Recognising the last team had arrived the three stones of the gate suddenly begin to glow with a barrier jutsu. The screen turns on. The proctor wears a mask rather like one of Konoha’s ANBU but with an impractically long beak, framed by sandy-brown bangs. “Welcome to the First Stage of the chunin exams.” Tsuru says in a flat tone as if he isn’t sure what purpose the words serve. “Listen closely as instructions will not be competed. This exam is a team challenge, those wishing to forfeit may leave through the enterance way, doing so will result in the entire teams failure.” Now he has the attention of the entire room. “If the number of teams in this room is not halved by one hour this room will flood with deadly neurotxins. You have until then to escape. Begin.” The screen turns off and the panic begins.

In Kemuigakure there was a white poplar tree. It’s bells chimed unheard and, slowly, the red string of a prayer came undone. The slip of paper falls and is lost under the paper colored leaves.
Biwa takes the biwa from his back and starts to play. With the surrounding chaos the effect is reminiscent of a musician on a sinking ship. “Biwa what do we do?” Keitiki asks timidly. Biwa does not pause in his music. “Escape.” His voice blends in perfectly with the tune. “What do want us to do?” Sazae asks. Biwa tells them.
One of the Hidden Grass Village teams can’t take the pressure. The team leader pushes towards the exit. As soon as his hand brushes the barrier it ignites with a bright flame that flickers over his entire body. His team mates ignite simultaneously and, in barely a second, the white ash tumbles down. The screaming starts as the students start to fight amongst each other. The screen flickers back on, showing a large countdown ticking below the tiny portrait photos of the exam’s entrants. Three of the portraits now have red crosses through them. There is a brief pause before one of the Kiri genin’s has the bright idea of picking up the diminutive Ame genin before him and hurling them at the gateway. Three more crosses appear as the ash falls. Pandemonium takes hold. The centre of the room becomes a battle arena as the teams brawl to eliminate the competition. Other teams skirt the periphery, trying to find a way to destroy the grey stone walls that seem to swallow the chakra of any jutsu that touches them.
“Wana.” Karakuri says. “I’m working on it.” The genjutsu specialist snaps at him as his eyes scurry across the room. Giri holds his katana out at a deterrent to the other teams. He appears almost bored. He has worked out the trick.
Sero waits on the periphery, watching his battles fight themselves. “Look at them scurry like ants.” He tells the scarlet haired girl at his side. The girl pushes up her glasses as she examines the battlefield and briefly considers lobbing one of her many poisoned blades into the mob. “At this rate they will destroy themselves. All without me having to lift a finger.” He tells his aide. “It’s anarchy.” She replies and tries not to find the concept too appealing.
“My first life was of tedium, my second life let me do all I wanted, my third life was as a dreadful man, my fourth life was as a blind pianist.” Biwa hums as he plays his chords. Keitiki twitches, wanting to leap into the fray. Biwa silences her with a wave of his hand. “Wait.” The counter ticks down further. 40 minutes remain. Then thirty. Then twenty. Teams are eliminated quickly, the victors being quick to drag new opponents into the brawl in the centre. “God gazes on the spectacle and the dice roll...” Biwa hums as his music permeates every part of the room. “Claiming lives with fate like that...It’s sheer comedy. Happiness and sorrow, merely choices decided by one in six...” Sazae forms hand seals and summons red painted tonfas. An entrant gets to close and she grabs his arm and tosses him back into the thick of the fray. “Ah how laughable it is...” Biwa’s eyes are closed now as he sings.
“Look!” someone yells out, pointing at the screen. As the last contestant becomes ash the pictures with the red crosses disappear from the screen. Half of them are gone and the timer stops. The genin’s pause in their battles at look at the screen. With a seconds pause the timer starts to tick again. “Trickery, deceit he cares not, for people revere him as a god.” Biwa’s music fills the waiting silence. “Ah how laughable it is.” A few teams opt for death now and throw themselves at the exit. The bright lights of burning illuminate the looks of horror on the faces of the others.
Yoru, deciding ‘what the hell’ singles Taran out from the crowd and kisses him hard. The remaining teams, four Konoha, two Ame, three Mizu, two Suna, three Iwa and three Kusa, slowly slump to the floor.
Five minutes.
Sero is pale with rage.
Four minutes.
Biwa stands and gestures to Sazae. She flings a blade into the wall where it sticks and the explosive tags explode. It leaves a slowly healing dent.
Three minutes.
The Mizu Nin obligingly join in, slicing at the same place in the stone with their blades.
The Kusa Nin stand.
Two minutes.
The wall cannot absorb the chakra of so many jutsu at once. It crack under the force and begins to break.
One minute.
The stone wall cracks away and falls in large chunks and a cheer goes up.
Thirty seconds.
The smoke clears.
Ten seconds.
The stone falls still, revealing the shining pane of tempered steel behind it, glowing with carved seals to blunt blades and absorb any kind of force. There is an artificial hiss that echoes through out the room.
“Congratulations for passing the first test of the chunin exams.” Tsuru’s voice echoes from the concealed speakers.
This announcement is met by a chorus of relieved sobs and more than a few choice swears in his general direction.
“Even when facing death a ninja must be resolute.” He recites with all the dryness of one reading from a text book. “Those who opt to destroy themselves rather than attempt to face adversity are not worthy of becoming a chunin. Only utmost determination against the odds will be rewarded. Now the next test will be testing your knowledge of physics …”
There is the indistinct sound of an argument and the bird masked man turns his head to the side.
“What is it?”
The reply is too far away from the microphone to be heard properly but it seems to get Tsuru rather flustered.
“I filled out the correct application.”
The indistinct whispering gets more forceful in tone.
“What do mean court marshal?!”
There is a minor scuffle as the bird masked Nin apparently tries to run and is tackled out of his chair. After a few more sounds of conflict another ninja moves into the camera’s focus, a man in a similarly avian mask but with long silvery hair plaited in the style of the Kagura Clan.
The symbols on the gate fade away and the faint haze of the barrier fades away.
“Please step through the gate to be told to the next location for the Second Stage of the chunin exams.” The Kemuri nin turns to face Tsuru who’s apparently lying on the floor. “And why did you alter the seal to burn off clothing in the first place? Now we have a bunch of naked genins in need of counselling and that does not look good on the Village’s record.”
He kicks the prone ninja on the floor as the majority of the surviving teams wonder how this trauma had suddenly become comedy.
One of the stunned Mizu nin picks up the Kusa nin he had been wrestling with and casually tosses the lighter ninja through the gateway. When he merely faceplants onto the boards beyond instead of bursting into flames the genins disheartened shuffle out of the sealed room to Tsuru’s muffled protests.
Admittedly some psychological testing was regular in these exams but just causing chaos like that had no style...
"The second exam will take place at exactly midnight at Akagetsu Town Gate. Until then get some sleep and prepare your weapons."
The nin says as they leave and turns off the screen.
Slowly the hole in the wall starts to heal itself...

In Kemurigakure there was a white poplar tree. Before leaving the village on a mission of importance every shinobi would stay and pray there, laying their weapons on the ground and praying for strength from the one who had been buried there. A leaf from that poplar tree, laid under the pillow before sleep, bought with it good luck and strange dreams.
The buildings of Kemurigakure, like that of Sunagakure, were made of stone but that was where the resemblance ended. Whereas the buildings of Sunagakure were the same golden color as the sands themselves and rounded by the harsh winds the buildings of Kemuri were vast square apartments carved into the dull grey stone of the massive cavern. The dark roof of the vast chamber was so high the village lights could not penetrate the gloom and it was speckled with glow-worms like trapped stars that gave the area the appearance of a permanent twilight. It was impossible to tell how deep underground this cavern was except that the stone floor, worn smooth first by magma flows then by generations of feet, was always warm to the touch from the heat of the earth’s core. Taking advantage of this warmth many of the Kemuri locals could be identified by their lack of shoes.
Surrounded on all sides by a maze of vast rivers of ice cold underground water, tunnels entirely filled with water and sudden vast waterfalls dropping onto pointed stalagmites, the village was fiercely guarded in a way that surprised many of the visitors after the cheerful opening ceremony. A large stone inset with an elaborate seal had been set up in the centre of the town square only a few months ago and any shinobi with a basic grasp of teleportation jutsu could use it to visit and to take others with them. The main street was packed with shinobi and tourists alike examining the merchandise and exclaiming at the rich history of an area that only a few years ago was believed to be uninhabited wasteland. Most of the local inhabitants stayed to the side streets, where the misshapen silhouettes of their bodies could be mistaken for a trick of the light, and watched with an air of amusement. One of the founding pillars of the village had been Acceptance or Asylum, a place for all to stay regardless of past crimes or what you were in the dark…
It made Naruto rather uneasy, knowing that there had been more teams planned to enter before the rules had been amended to include that entrants must be at least 80% human. Akira was even more uneasy, profusely apologizing to the Hokage as they made their way along the carved stone hallway and constantly having to remind himself that scuttling is undignified. “I promise it won’t happen again, Tsuru has been thoroughly disciplined and we’ve docked his funding…” Akira babbles, trying to pick up the stray sheets of paper that keep flying from the report in his arms. Akira’s tone is starting to annoy Naruto who is sick of trying to talk to the scorpion man as an equal without him flinching. Naruto rubs his temples. He can feel a migraine starting. “Why did someone so unstable get such an important position anyway? Wait…Let me guess.” The Hokage pauses halfway through his own question as the answer occurs to him. “Seeing as this is your village’s first chunin exams…” “You have to already be of special jonin or jonin rank to be a proctor…all the villages jonin’s are missing nin from other villages. Sorry.” Akira nods sadly. “It’s not your fault so STOP APOLOGIZING.” Naruto snaps, more harshly than he meant to and Akira flinches back as he opens the door that leads onto the closest thing to the Hokage’s Mansion he had. Overlooking the village was an observatory. The walls were made of glass and it was lit like a sun from inside with heat lamps that fed the veritable forest of plants surrounding the circular meeting table. A few of Akira’s less violent minded children, wearing broad brimmed grass hats and carrying various gardening implements tend to each plant like large rather ugly bees. Two push up chairs for their father and his guest while a third pours out some form of lemonade. “Kaze built this place for me. It reminds me of home.” Akira says carefully as Naruto looks around. Every single plant is a cactus.
“Hideki…” The dragon armed man pauses in his wall before very slowly turning around as if in no hurry to answer the soft calling of his name. “Hiroshi.” He replies in short clipped emotionless tones before turning back and continuing his walk along the corridor. “Wait!” Hiroshi jogs up beside him, grabbing Hideki’s metal arm just above the wrist to force him stop. “I have a mission report to turn in.” Hideki says, trying to tug his arm free. Hiroshi brings his other arm up to softly stroke Hideki’s cheek. His words are soft, choked with emotion. “This silly feud between us has to stop Hideki. All I have to say is this: I’m sorry. Sorry about what happened to Sanae, what happened to…us.” Hideki doesn’t reply. He just pulls away, leaving Hiroshi alone in the middle of the corridor.
In comparison to the wonderful buildings of Akaigestu Town the official entrance of the village was rundown; a Tori gate that must have once been painted a brilliant red but had faded over the years and peeled back to reveal the bare wood underneath. Patches of bleeding rust marked the remains of nails. Compared to the Forest of Death even the trees looked boring. They weren’t very exotic or menacing; no half concealed shapes lurked in the early morning mist. The only sounds were the cries of ordinary owls hunting. More of the strange ghostly coloured lanterns have been set up, turning all the gathered genins the same shade of chalk white. What appears to be a statue rests cross-legged on a stone. Only the faintest tremble of the man’s chest shows that he is, in fact, alive. When the last of the sleepy genins trail in the proctor uncrosses his legs and stands, startling those closest to him, and clears his throat for silence. The man would be rather handsome if it wasn’t for the ethereal blankness in his face, further highlighted by the strange lanterns, and the bulging veins and surgery scars of where his right eye has been replaced by the Byakugan. He doesn’t even attempt to hide this blatant theft. Across his back he wears a bow made of two interlocked bones and strung with what appeared to be a twist of white hair.
“The second portion of this test is a survival test.” He announces loudly. He is recognizable as the man who tackled the first proctor. “My name is Kaguya Kuromaru.” Inwardly the man hopes no-one comments on the name. “I will be supervising this exam but I will not be allowed to provide aid to any teams. Firstly I would like to confirm that everyone present has signed their consent forms. This part of the exams is very dangerous and if you’re still tired or don’t want to continue it would be best to back out now.” Quietly one of the Iwagakure teams stands and goes to leave. “Secondly this part of the exam is no longer a team event. No team will be penalized for the loss or injury of a member. In fact we’re not expecting any teams to get out of this fully intact.” This comment is met by silence. “Nevertheless I strongly advise against the temptation of trying to take out your team members early. This test is near impossible to pass as individuals; it’s just that losing a team member isn’t the end of the test for you. Thirdly, I also advise against killing your opponents. Again it isn’t against the rules but those who draw too much attention to themselves will be taken out.” “By what?” one of the Ame nin enquires. In answer the man raises his bow at the forest behind him. “This is the forest of Kemuri, the land of unexplained disappearances. No doubt this is before your time but this place was the main defence line of our village. Entire armies have walked past this tree line trying to conquer our village. Not only have none succeeded but none have survived, or at least no bodies have been recovered. We may have put a hold on any training mission and the such and evacuated a lot of personnel but there are still things out there. Thing not even we could get rid of. Try not to attract them.” Then, as if he hadn’t just suggested everyone was going to get eaten by monsters, Kuromaru continues with his instructions. “From now to midnight tomorrow all entrants to the exams will stay in the forest, taking out their opposition if they so choose but most of all surviving until the bell goes. All applicants that exit the woods before the end of the week after the bell will go onto the third and final part of the exams…if there are enough of you that are alive enough for it to count. Personally I think it’s more likely any survivors will get promoted on the spot but, hey, that’s just me. Anyone who leaves the woods before the bell has forfeited the exam.” Kuromaru points his bow at the watching genins. “Trust no-one, trust no thing and watch where you step. This forest is a volcanic hotspot, a naturally occurring minefield if you will. Trust me you’ll have enough to deal with about worrying about the others. Now get in there or get out of here.” The Kaguya jerks his finger at the still innocuous looking tree line then sits back down. The teams dart off into the trees.
Finding the nearest fairly secure location Sero swiftly sits and summons the scrolls of intelligence he had managed to gather and, eventually, outright steal. “Kaze’s forest…” he mutters under his breath and gives a humourless smile. “Just something my father has been gathering information on for nearly forty years. A victory on a silver plate.” His father’s research was always impressively thorough and no doubt the absence of this scroll has already been noticed. It was a gamble he had to take though. Inwardly Sero hoped that an impressive performance in the exams would be enough to deflect Orochimaru’s irritation at the theft and temper Kabuto’s resentment at the gap it had left in his filing system. The information is impressively extensive; Orochimaru had very much wanted to own this village as his own and had gathered every scrap of information both on the infamously elusive Kaze and every Nin that could be affiliated with him. Most of the stories are mere folk stories, scraps of superstition passed down by word of mouth that the Sannin had spent hours extracting the hidden truths from. Other files were darker and bought a twitch of a smile to the pale Uchiha’s lips. Reports of some rather creatively mutilated bodies, sudden cases of insanity, missions failing for no reason, strange weather patters; all had been attributed to Kaze by Orochimaru’s neat shorthand in the margins of mission reports and newspaper articles. Oh and the disappearances too. There was always at least one person who went missing around the pale man with the cheerful smile, simply because what he offered was always better than staying behind. Most of the facts were useless, out of date or simply inaccurate to start with but the scrolls on Kaze’s ‘friends’ as he insisted on calling them, were still being updated fairly regularly thanks to Doku’s little liaison with Kaze’s son. Most of them weren’t even 30% human. The nicknames given to each ‘species’ were ominous enough: Butcher Bird. Wendigo. The Skin. Scrathling. Stalker. Sero scans down the list with a practised eye, noting all the yokai names on the list and is inwardly glad each scroll contains foolproof methods of avoiding, repelling or killing each one. “Kotonii.” He hands her a list of ingredients, written on the back of an out of focus photograph of some ominous shape in the shadows. “Get these things quickly. I’ve thought of a way to thin the competition.” “Do you have a task for me Lord Sero?” the third member of his team asks softly, holding himself to look smaller in a gesture of supplication as the red haired girl fades into the shadows better than even Kabuto could. Sero grips the younger boy’s neck, tilting his head upwards to look into his eyes. The red flash of the sharingan is reflected in the mirror like blankness of the others pupils. The boy has been put under so many genjutsu illusions it has completely crushed his mind and left his iris’s with ragged edges. The Uchiha was not only confident that his other team mate would never betray him; he knew his puppet was physically incapable of thinking those thoughts. Sero owned him completely, saw everything that went on inside his head and purged away all the unnecessary thoughts. He wouldn’t even feel pain unless he had been ordered to. “Yes I do…” Sero smiles. There was no emotion in the boy’s mind, none at all, just the empty waiting for orders… Sero enjoyed his company, for one he never talked unless it related to his orders, and there was a dark satisfaction to be gained from ordering something from one that never resisted… “You will pay a visit to my brother…”
Resting on a broad comforting branch of a tall oak tree Yoru discussed the situation with the rest of his team. Spread across his legs was a scroll, physically the twin of the one Sero had been consulting, with the relevant sections displayed and just the action of getting it out of his pack had been enough to make Yoru smile. Who said his father didn’t have a sense of humour? Everything was a test; one of his earliest memories was actually of Kimi-Haha getting him to repeat the phrase over and over again. Neither of the brothers had heard of the village until Doku started to talk about Giri at the dinner table and Orochimaru-Sama’s interest in the subject had been…unusual. Just before the start of the exam both brothers had been resolute to own the scroll of Lord Orochimaru’s research. Sero had lightly plucked the scroll from its alcove, calming the serpents that curled around all of the Sannin’s documents with his sharingan eye before sneaking off with it. Yoru, perched in the shadows, had in fact done the same thing only hours earlier before swiftly weaving shadows around himself with genjutsu and watching as an irritated Kabuto was roused to replace the missing document with an exact double. Stealing from Orochimaru-sama was a horrible crime but, if he wanted to lend you a bit of aid, you would need to work hard to earn it from him. No doubt it wasn’t out of affection as much as for the entertainment but Yoru was sure that in some other part of this forest Sero was feeling very pleased with himself for gaining an advantage that father had practically given to them both. Besides Doku liked him better and an alliance with Giri’s team had lead to all sorts of useful information that didn’t appear on the scrolls. “Basically the majority of these…creatures will leave us alone if we leave them alone. We should concentrate on getting a defence perimeter up and finding safe food for the rest of the day, then we can work on sabotaging the competition and information gathering.” It seemed a good plan, especially seeing as Yoru was quick to take Taran with him to try and gather some non-toxic food but now he was questioning exactly why it had seemed to make such tactical sense to split up in hostile territory. Taran was constantly jumpy seeing as Yoru didn’t seem to be watching his back in any way but the literal. “Would you stop staring?!” Taran finally snaps, blushing red with embarrassment. Yoru merely grins mischievously and blows a stray strand of hair out of his eyes. “What? You’ve got a nice a**.” Yoru can’t see Taran’s expression but the tips of the Puppet-master’s ears start to flush red. Taran grabs the last of the pale yellow fruit and makes sure he ‘accidentally’ drops one on Yoru’s head as he scrambles down the trunk. Yoru rubs his head, pouts and picks up the fruit from where it lies on the ground. He wipes off the dirt against his shirt and sniffs it. The fruit smells nice, almost like spiced custard. He goes to take a bite. “Don’t eat that.” Taran warns. “It’s not poisonous is it?” Yoru looks alarmed. “No. I mean, I don’t think so…” “All the poison tests I did came up negative…” Yoru says taking a bite. The fruit’s flesh is a soft white and rather tasty. He offers one to Taran who reluctantly takes the strange fruit and smells it. “Well o.k…What’s the worst that could happen?”
It takes twenty minutes for the effects to wear off and another ten for the two to catch their breath enough to manage to speak. “We’re…never…doing…that…again.” Taran manages to gasp out. “Never.” Yoru agrees, barely managing to nod before he pauses to consider it. “Not even…?” “Never.” “Never.” Yoru settles on, nevertheless trying to close his fingers over one of the few fruit’s that hadn’t ended up getting squished between them. “Never…” Taran reminds him warningly. “I…have…an idea.” Taran groans loudly in the hope it will put Yoru off. It doesn’t work. “From how far away can you control your puppets?” Yoru asks. “Pretty far…why?” Taran replies warily. “I wonder how my brother would deal with this…” Yoru grins evilly. “After all it’s not poisonous …”
Sero slowly examines the fruit. Some creature had left it in a rough hollow under a tree not far from his camp and he was getting hungry. Even Kotonii’s most extensive poison tests had not shown anything toxic about it. Briefly his considers his options before slitting the golden fruit in two and picking up a half. He doesn’t recognize it but its smell is definitely attractive … Sero lets a drop of the juice fall onto the tip of his tongue and, when no negative effects result, takes a bite. Kotonii takes the other half and lightly nibbles on it. The taste is very sweet. “Kotonii…” Sero says softly, surprising her. “Please can you sit a little closer?” A faint blush is an unfamiliar sight on his cheeks.
It was a busy first hour of the second part of the Chunin exams.

In Kemurigakure there was a white poplar tree. It’s spread branches were wide and the shade of the clearing was a cool comfort to all that rested there. What wild animal would dare come near it, knowing what had been there before? It was the only true place in the village that was always safe, always welcoming
Two figures lay in the soft grasses now with their fingers entangled like the tree roots and dappled shade mottling their faces. One had other duties that they should be attending to but could not muster up enthusiasm for blood-letting so early on such a glorious morning. The other had no duties to perform, no business being here but the simply curiosity of another and reveled in the meeting. The heart wants to be near what it loves and the fruit had not been needed for a happy ending between the two. Besides Giri knew more of this forest than even the Kemuri Nin who had set the exam up deliberately so he at least could not fail. It had cost a hefty portion of the inheritance he had no use for but bought him a few golden midnight moments. He knew both parents would consider that a fair bargain. The albino dreamt stratagems all night, ways for him to coerce the release of his dark-haired lover into these woods for good. Wrapped in strong, warm arms Doku dreamed of fresh lamb on a bed of wild rice and nuzzled closer to his living pillow. Glad to finally have their more moral teammate happily incapacitated Karakuri and Wana put into play their own plans.
Taran had fallen asleep against Yoru's shoulder; inevitable considering the amount of 'exercise' they had both engaged in. Yoru too had not lasted much longer after weaving a genjutsu web to hide them from sight and alert him to danger. Then he had wrapped an arm around Taran's shoulder and nodded off himself. Neither of the pair worried much for Arashi who would never follow and order to stay hidden in one place or, even if she did, would draw some calamity to her live a candle draws moths. Destiny never ran out of jobs for anyone that looked idle to do. Besides the branch they had made base-camp had a concealment genjutsu on it made of a seal Orochimaru-sama had bartered from Kaze himself. It would make a safe enough place to hide should it be required.
Yoru slept easily and did not notice the soft slit that was carved into the belly of his genjutsu and silently sewn shut again. His closed eyes did not see the dull gleam of the curved bladed dagger, so different from that of a kunai, or the dark grey gloved hand that held it. The years of training Kimimaro had beaten into his weary body saw all too well and as the dagger was raised so to did Yoru's hands move and tightly grip the wrists of his would-be assassin and the eyes slipping into wakefulness already glowed red with the sharingan. He isn't surprised in the slightest when they meet similarly red eyes. Sero draws back his lips in a silent snarl but it is simple enough for Yoru to see past the gesture of hatred. Sero's eyes are wider then usual and there was a trace of sweat lingering on his pale skin. He was nervous. Kabuto had forbidden him to seek anything approaching counsel from another, a fact that made his older brother pity Sero all the more. At least he had Kimimaro to answer all his questions and soothe his fears. The closest thing to a friend Sero was allowed was his hated brother. These meeting were all too common and Yoru knew it was a desperate attempt to find someone to talk to rather than a genuine assassination attempt. For one the blade wasn't even poisoned. "I will kill you." Sero whispers. The words lack emphasis behind the menace. It had become an accustomed greeting. "Maybe, maybe not." Yoru holds his gaze firmly and keeps his brother's hands held tight. He can't even drop the dagger unless Yoru wished it. Smirking with all too familiar arrogance Sero inclines his head to the side, towards the still sleeping Taran. "Before I do I'm going to cut up your little boy toy." Sero tugs on his dagger but Yoru's grip is still tight. "Still think you'll wanna ******** the b***h once I've made him my chopping board?" Yoru shrugs in a very calm way that makes Sero angrier. "I like him." The older Uchiha gives his brother's poisonous words no heed. Hopefully they will remain empty threats. "Awww are you in love the first Suna slut who'll jump into bed with you?" Sero teases, still struggling to break Yoru's hold. "Probably." Yoru replies evenly. "What's that like?" Sero's voice is barely a whisper.
Yoru is surprised and Sero swiftly looks away to avoid eye contact. It may be just a trick of the poor lighting but was his brother blushing? Yoru remembers something else he had seen, in a normal family. Twisting his grip on Sero's hands Yoru makes him stumble forwards and embed the dagger harmlessly into the tree trunk. Releasing his hold Yoru swiftly wraps his arms around his shoulders. Sero's thin body trembles at the touch. Had this seriously been the first time he had a normal, friendly hug? Yoru had always taken it for granted. "You're doing very well brother." He whispers softly in Sero's ear. "Now scram." He lets go and Sero leaps back like a demon that has just been doused with holy water and spits on the ground before fleeing as fast as his feet can carry him. "He runs like a chicken." Taran mutters without opening his eyes. "He has the manners of one too." Yoru replies, snuggling back next to the Suna Nin. "Just a bit longer in 'bed'?" Taran doesn't reply, he's already nodded off. They would be asleep for the events of the next two hours.
The next Suna team to try one of the hanging fruits of the Forest of No Return was swiftly out of the running. It took less than half an hour for the tiny wasp eggs that turned the normally bitter green fruit into a plump blue gall to incubate within the warmth of a human stomach and sting their way out, buzzing in swarms around their new hives.
The Ame teams were disqualified, fleeing from between the trees after only half an hour after one claimed they saw the grim specter of Salamander Hanzo among the trees, stalking those who's existence was due to the support of his overthrow. One came to die, months later, from the rare poison of the Black Salamander.
A Kusa team searching for water was the next to fail as they fell prey to one of the forest's many Whispering Streams, as soon as their lips touched a drop of the clear water their fingers curled back on themselves and their clothes fell away as feathers forced their way through cloth. In under a minute all that was left were a lonely pile of clothing and three white herons winging their way towards the sunrise.
Two Iwa teams got into a feverent battle over a theft each one blamed on another while a ninja with no face laughed at them from above the tree-tops and it's partner shadows sucked each drop of fallen blood from the dirt. As the last one of the Iwa fell from the wounds it leapt down, featureless face shifting between the forms of each fallen comrade, alike only in the menace behind it's smile.
One Konoha team merely heard the sound of a grass flute playing from between the trees and wandered after it, never to be seen or heard from again.
A Kiri team lost themselves in the darkest parts of the woods, surviving but never returning to the forests border when the bell was struck because they had found things more fun than a droll shinobi life. Any search sent out to find them failed but for many years afterwards the fresh-water crocodiles of those darkened pools would be noted for a disturbing aptitude for mischief and a darkening of the head scales that rather resembled the four wave emblem of Kirigakure.
Other teams were fragmented, some divided by disloyalty and others by the forest itself. There was little the forest did not splinter, leading many of the non-Kemuri nin to actually view the trees as trying to remove interlopers. Very few knew that was indeed the case. There was little that Kuromaru could not see from the tall Frost Pine at the trees border. His Hyuuga eye cut through the mere miles as if the distance was an insult. He saw the Kusa team sprout their feathers and the last convulsions of the Suna team and treated them with apathy alike. This whole exam was an expensive way of settling the long-standing Dispute, even though he was proud he had handled things better than Tsuru had. Then again the Kaguya wasn't sure Tsuru did understand anything about the political state the village had been left in after both Kaze and Hayato had died, to the bird-masked scientist any of Kemuri's glorious leaders existed solely to squeeze funding out of. He had to apologize for the tackle. Thankfully Tsuru didn't harbor any grudges. Or possible he did. It was hard to tell really. All that mattered to Kuromaru on the other hand was making sure Hiroshi's students passed. Once they did this silent civilwar in every sense of the word would be won.
Biwa had disappeared, no doubt to do something terribly important, and left Keitiki and Sazae to each others company. None of them complained at the time, that would mean doubting Biwa after all, but it was apparent they cordially detested each other as rivals in love. Keitiki, as usual, refused to shut up, babbling on and on with insults caged with false compliments on everything from her rival's dress to the color of her eyes while Sazae remained defiantly silent and inwardly wondered if Keitiki had a motor installed in her throat that let her babble on for so long without stopping for breath. "I'm going to go find something to eat." She says, overriding Keitiki's latest comment and trudging off into the trees without waiting for a reply. Indignantly Keitiki is forced into a jog to catch up with her. "Oh no, no, no I'm not letting you look good in front of Biwa just because you snuck out to get food. I bet I can find something twice as good for him-" Sazae stops paying attention and Keitiki's chatter becomes just an unpleasant echoing in her ears until Keitiki actually elbows her in the ribs. "What?" Keitiki points to a place off the right from the animal path they had been following. "I saw Biwa going that way!" She says in what she probably believed was a whisper. "So?" Sazae keeps walking forwards, carefully brushing aside some of the dense scrub. Keitiki rolls her eyes at the idiocy of her companion and plunges after Sazae. "So if we follow him we can see where he's going, even protect him from other ninjas if they try to lay an ambush!" "Biwa doesn't need any of that." Sazae argues. "Well...yeah...but aren't you curious as to why he didn't come over?" Keitiki whines, grabbing Sazae's sleeve. Sazae inhales sharply and quickly pulls her garment free. "If we go check it out will you please stop pestering me!" "Of course." Keitiki says with a smug grin and Sazae sighs and gives in. "Fine. You go around the left-side and follow from behind." And hopefully the tangled branches to that side of the path would be enough to slow her down so no-one could hear her constant complaining. "I'll flank the right." Sazae says and mentally makes a note to memorize whatever it was Biwa was up to for when Keitiki got lost and pressed her for details.
Gagaku Biwa trudged his way along a winding dirt path, the summer heat had dried out the dirt that was normally mud churned by the feet of wild pigs going to drink. With what seems like a nervous twitch he plucks the strings of his Biwa in a way that sounds a few disorganized chords as he walks. It is a finding song to draw him to his target and each glowing thread of chakra gleams in his vision as each note augments his senses. The branching patterns of the places someone has touched begin to resemble something of a spider's web. Perfect, he is close indeed. For a brief moment there is a flash of another chakra, one he seemed to recognize but so familiar was the feel Biwa never had time to identify it as a possible threat before the flicker was gone. Biwa continues down the path un-alerted to his followers. To many other nin the most dangerous woods of Kemuri were a formless formidable maze of bent branches and confusing twists but Kemuri village's habit of immediately tossing those who wished to become shinobi straight into the most deadly place they owned meant this was as much his training grounds as it was the others Forest of Death. Each stand of trees and even the faint tingling of the genjutsu warping his senses were as familiar as a street-sign. The spirits of the trees were happy to let him pass. This was his village, from the dirt under his feet to the arrow-shaped leaves that reached towards the still darkened skies. He had been a part of it since the moment he had first opened his eyes and pulled himself from the nutrient slime of the cloning tanks. He loved this village, knew it like the instrument that had been the first thing he had grabbed hold of and refused to let go of since. "Wana." With the gleam from his glasses carefully concealing his expression Hideki's prized student perches in the branches of a black poplar like a bloat-bellied spider with skinny, twig-like limbs. The curl of his head as he looks down at the much shorter Bard is distinctly...predatory. "Biwa." He leaps straight down and lands without having to bend his knees. It's a remarkable smooth action for a genjutsu specialist, a path not normally known for any physical prowess. Biwa does not flinch in the slightest as Wana approaches, although he does start to pick out a different song on the Biwa. With a subtle incline of his head he gestures for Wana to sit. The request is heeded and Biwa soon settles down beside him, a tough springy grass providing a decent pillow. The bard sits cross-legged to best play his instrument and Wana inclines his head to look up at the fading stars. The smudge of the rising sun bleeds light into the night sky. Carefully and drawing Biwa's close attention Wana summons a small bundle wrapped in oilcloth. Biwa carefully pulls apart the wrappings. Inside is two of the soft flower shaped bread rolls from the pre-exam festivities, a blob of soft cheese and one green apple. The knife Wana pulls from the folds of his shirt is a short single curve of steel and little use as a weapon and holds the blade not the handle as he offers it to Biwa. The Bard serves breakfast in the silence broken only by the waking calls of birds, slicing the apple into crescent shaped slices and spreading the soft cheese across each one before stuffing both rolls with the mixture. Breakfast is eaten in silence too, a soft diplomatic silence between two who had no right to be meeting so peacefully. As Biwa wraps the apple-core and the remaining cheese back up in the oilcloth Wana leans over and runs a finger over the rough linen bandages that cover the bard's mouth. Biwa lets him.
At that time the remaining entrants in the chunin exams numbered nine Konoha nin, three Kiri nin, three Suna nin, two Iwa nin and six Kusa nin...

In Kemurigakure there was a white poplar tree with wide spreading branches and glossy green leaves. Around it grew soft meadow grasses and the soft delicate blossoms of the deep purple wildflowers, each indigo petal curling in to make a perfect bell shape. The flowers were poisonous but they had the sweetest scent…
Doku was still asleep when Giri carefully picked him up. There were few things that made him happier then moments like this. The dark midnight black strands of Doku’s hair had fallen across his face and they looked so soft and fluid it was like wisps of cloud. Carefully Giri brushes them aside before he lifts Doku onto his shoulders. Snow pale lips part for a moment as Doku mutters some incoherent syllables and snuggles against Giri’s chest. The albino swordsman can’t help but smile. The Voice on the Wind had told him to find something he wanted to protect; something about an ancient bargain. Now he never wanted to let Doku go... But his father would be missing his favored son and Giri would not be the one to antagonize him further. Things could only get worse if he knew Doku had snuck out somewhere so dangerous by himself and Orochimaru's anger was always a bitter taste, as Doku so charmingly put it. Giri wouldn't carry him all the way to where the Oto Nin had set up a secure camp impersonating one of the Konoha teams mentors (while the man who formerly held that position made his way through the digestive system of Manda III) but he could carry him to the fringe of the forest before waking him up and sending him on his way, then go back to the Survival Exam he was supposed to be struggling with. As he walked down the rough dirt animal path shadows curled back from the way in front of him. Spirits faded back into the shadows of bushes, things that seemed crooked claws became tree branches without appearing to change at all. All around him bears became increasingly preoccupied with stripping the berries from blackberry bushes and showing that both long curled claws and sharp fangs are pointedly being used on something other than the albino swordsman. That should have been warning enough and, for those of Kemurigakure it would have been, for it was obvious from soon after his birth that the son was as strange as the father. But some minds could not be changed with a hammer and, it seems, some clichés must always be repeated. Some will never learn that the world is not made so that a strange child walking unarmed cannot be defeated so easily.
Three Konoha Nin blocked the path.
"Can I help you?" Giri asks politely as he steps up to them. All are a significant amount taller than him and hold the bright steel of edged weapons ready and uncomfortably close to Giri's face. Giri's sword is sheathed at his waist and he has both arms held in front of him to support Doku's back. The dark-haired serpent child is still deeply asleep; it being one of the three things he really enjoyed doing. A whispered breath of a murmur leaves his lips as he rests his head on Giri's shoulders. All four sets of eyes fix on him as Giri adjusts his grip and Doku contentedly falls silent.
"That kid..." One of the Konoha Nin ventures. His voice has already broken and he has the fine stubble markings of the beginning of a beard. Giri puts his age at around 23, far too old to be bothered by a mere sleeping kid. "He got a name?" "Its Doku." Giri replies, feeling the Nin is being rather rude. "See the thing is, he sure looks an awful lot like a missing Nin from our village," "Called himself legendary Sannin Orochimaru." Another adds softly. "In fact he was also the one responsible for that little skirmish in the Chunin Exams last time it was in Konoha, killed both my parents with those summoned snakes of his." "Mine too as a matter of fact." "All our parents when you come to think of it." The third replies, not taking his eyes from Doku. Giri smiles an easy smile. “Well if that’s what’s bothering you get in line, Orochimaru kills people parents, children and families for fun.” The second Konoha Nin smiles but it doesn’t reach his eyes. “We’ll cut you a deal seeing as you seem the respectable sort. Everyone knows you have some weird s**t going down in here, clones, monsters…” “Past lives.” The third Nin adds pointedly and his knuckles shine white from how tight the grip on his kunai’s hilt is. “Just let us see the eyes. Orochimaru had yellow eyes.” The first Nin says softly. “Maybe your friend just had the misfortune to be born that effeminate and pale.” “Or maybe we can do the world a favor and kill the b*****d before he gets to grow up.” The fourth Nin presses the Kunai blade to Giri’s throat.
Giri barely notices; he is watching Doku sleep. “You know if he was awake no doubt he could charm you into ignoring this whole thing.” Giri sighs. “Unfortunately I’m not that much of a diplomat so all I can say is this:”
The shining steel of the Luminosity forged katana leaps from its sheath with the vigor of a salmon moving upstream.
“Don’t” It carves an arch of light in the morning air, moving so fast it takes a while for the wind of the swing to ruffle the hair of new corpse as the fourth nin collapses to the ground, the kunai tumbling harmlessly to the floor.
"Touch." The second nin is felled before he can even understand that something has happened to his team mate. His face is still set in an expression of grim determination as a thin trickle of blood oozes from his lips.
"My." The third nin's eyes just have time to widen in surprise before the stained blade bursts from his chest like an alien baby. The remaining nin's eyes fall on the pale swordsman. His arms are still wrapped tight around the sleeping serpentine youth but the black lacquerred sheath that hangs at his side is now empty.
"Doku." The last nin tries to run but falls as if his legs had been cut out from underneath him. Which they have.
The Konoha Genin fearfully swallows his screams of pain as he tries to stem the bleeding from the severed stumps of his legs and there is a flash of red-stained steel hovering at his throat. "This blade of mine." Giri says conversationally as he steps over the corpse in front of him, Doku still held tightly in his arms. "It's an odd blade. It cannot be drawn in anger or in vengence. If I had merely wanted to cut you down I would not have been able to tug it loose from its sheath at all. No, this blade knows its cue to fight." Keeping his body perfectly still the Konoha Nin keeps his eyes dead ahead, hearing the slowly approaching crunch of dried leaves under the Kemuri Nin's approaching feet. The blade, seeming to vibrate in the still air with supressed speed, is still pressed close to his throat as if waiting for the command to kill.
"This sword of mine..." Giri whispers in the man's ear and the Konoha nin nearly wets himself. "It will only act to defend something I love from those that would dare take it from me. You don't care about taking Doku from me any more...do you?" There is a complete absence of response from the Nin and Giri finally remembers. He clicks his tongue and the blade glides backwards, seemingly suspended weightless on the air. The genin nods, not trusting himself to speak. "Then that is what spared you your comerades fate. Run along, leave this test and get those legs seen to. You have been granted a bit more life." The katana floats further backwards, lazily hovering in mid-air and moving like a fat python after a solid feed. The Konoha Nin could swear the point was looking at him. It seems to turn aside and slowly wipe itself off on the grass before gliding casually back into its sheath with a dull "click"
Ahead there is a gleam of light from where the trees thin. The edge of the forest is not too far away for an injured man to drag himself and the Konoha Nin wastes no time in doing so, continuously aware of the Albino's pale eyes fixed upon his back. He would never make Chunin, not with his injuries, but he would go on to lead a perfectly contented life as a fisherman, marry, have a couple of kids and never ever talk about what had happened to his legs.
Giri...waits, Doku still contentedly slumbering in his arms. He keeps his eyes fixed ahead and does not flinch as he picks up the intense feelings of the forest's interest. He can feel the soft tingle on his skin; the feeling of something being close enough behind him to nearly touch his skin. He can hear the sound of soft breathing, a sound distinctly inhuman...He can hear the unspoken question form on unseen lips. What would happen if he turned around, the albino can't help but wonder, what would he see? He never would though. He was not afraid of what particular patch of darkness had crawled, oozed or loped its way out of the woods, drawn by the scent of split blood. It was afraid of him which is why it waited for his permission to feed. The swordsman gives it with a tiny incline of his head before he steps away, towards the brighter skies of the forest edge. Behind him the three corpses of the Konoha Genins are slowly dragged away. There would not be so much as a tooth left over.
The Kusa Team was...nervous. They had trained on wide grass plains. The forest was Konoha territory, not theirs. It made them worry, the trees pressing in so close to them. They were afraid because the woods seemed to press in from all sides like a maze, funnelling them towards a specific location. How long had it been since they had last seen another human being? The Kusa leader wonders as he fumbles blindly through yet another screen of spiked bramble vines. Where were all the other genins? One had the foresight to pack rations but they had all been used up hours ago, nibbled away in tiny bites until nothing remained. Now hunger and exhaustion both twisted their stomachs. They could not turn back, the way behind them seemed to grow over with large thorns and tangled tree branches as soon as they had walked past it. So they continued going forwards until the feeling they were going in circles drove them mad. Tiny golden plumed bird with long tails sat on the trees above and, when the three finally fell, descended to peck clean the bones.
Yoru yawned and stretched. The bare skin of his forearm touched a metal tripwire. Immediately the half Uchiha shook off the last bleary delusions of sleep and keep absolutely still as he very carefully used his other arm to nudge Taran. "Taran. Get up." He hisses. The puppetmaster yawns and starts to stretch but is hurriedly stopped by a tight grip on his wrist. The entire space around the clearing has been woven with steel wire, a net with no weak spaces that seems to pass entirely through his genjutsu as if it wasn't there. Yoru swears in a long dead language. "It just have been Sero's little toy." He spits. "Rifuto Doesn't have the imagination to be fooled by genjutsu." "Am I misisng something here?" The Puppetmaster replies, carefully testing a few wires with a fingernail to see if they could be snipped without something nasty resulting. "Remember Sero's team for the first Exam?" Yoru asks, doing the same with his free arm. It's a complicated tangle to get through. Each wire seems to depend on several others to avoid being triggered, cutting one would trigger many others. "Yeah there was him, the red haired girl and..." Taran's brow wrinkles in perplexity. "He puts a genjutsu on the third member of his team to prevent him from being recognized." Yoru takes the wire his arm had touched between his teeth to get his other hand free. "The guys a complete tool, my brother uses his sharingan to erase all traces of independant thought in him. A genjutsu won't work unless Sero commands it." Yoru swears again. "I should have seen this coming. It'll take hours to work free of this thing." "Damn I hope Arashi will be o.k. without us." Taran says under his breath as he worms his fingers into the gaps between wires. This massive construct must have taken hours to set up, hours they had just spent idily sleeping and depending on Uchiha Genjutsu to prevent them being detected.
It was the smell that first twined its way into her sleep. A smell of leafmould and wet fur and canned dogfood that made her dreams twist uneasily and forced the remaining Suna nin into wakefullness as another warm gust of fetid breath blew across her face. Arashi dared to crack open a single eye. Two small blue eyes set in an orange striped face stared back at her, black gums drawn back to show a variety of curved teeth before a large furred hand closes around her wrists and prevents her from drawing the katana at her side.
There had have been some gorilla in this creature's ancestery although possibly it was only in the general skeletal structure, it stood on its hindlegs at least eight foot tall. The creature's face was closer to a bear's snout, although it had a tigers striped orange fur. Its shoulders were broad, its arms long and muscled ending with stubby opposable thumbed hands with long claw like nails; its legs short and stumpy with three clawed toes. It had an omnivour's teeth teeth; long curled incisors for tearing at flesh with shorter grinding molars at the back of the snout-like jaw. Its ears on the other hand were rounded and small with a shaggy mane of fur cascading down its chest and back. Patches of its fur were in different shades of clashing stripe patterns as if its pelt had been sewn out of a collection of tiger skin rugs and there some something jerky in its movements as if it was a poor stop motion animation. The disturbing thing however is that, despite the bulging of its face, its blue eyes were completely human. Its wet black nose shoved close to her face as it sniffed at the scent of her, a sound halfway between a growl and a purr rumbling from its deep throat. Arashi stayed perfectly still, pretending to be asleep. She hadn't seen this coming, who could have.
Carefully she tuned out the usual expletives from the Other as she draws her hand away from the katana hilt. The creature notices the movement and steps backwards onto all fours, propping itself up on the knuckles of its forearms and its throat flexes as it roars. The sound is half a grizzly bears bellow and half a dominant tigers roar. It makes the leaves of the oak blow backwards by the force of it and the warm stink of a meat eater engulfs the Suna Nin. "Yeah rawr very scary." Arashi says absentmindedly as she looks over the rest of her gear. Where have Taran and Yoru gone to? Surely just getting food wouldn't have taken so long. The mighty roar cuts off with a poodle like yip as the creature stops and tilts its head in surprising. "Nope, I'm not scared of you, although I am curious as to how you got in here." Arashi says as she looks in her own pack and comes out with a silver foil packet of dried jerky strips. "Want one?" The creature growls, showing its black gums. "Suit yourself then." Arashi shrugs and takes a bite of the dry tough meat. Its not very filling at all and she can't blame the creature for declining. With a snort the large ape like creature reaches up its long arms and fastens its fingers around the wide tree branches before swining all its weight upwards, releasing at the apex of its jump and landing heavily in a pile of dried grass wedged between the meeting point of two branches. It settles down in its nest until only two bright blue eyes watching the strange intruder can be seen. That explains it, Arashi thinks idily as she waits.
Tick. Tick. Karakuri watches Sazae watching Biwa. A kunai is held loosely in the palm of his hand as if he barely remembers he is holding it. Tick. His face is blank but his eyes gleam with focus. He watches his team's leader and the leader of his enemy's team sit down and share bread. Perhaps thoughts of jealousy run through his mind, it is impossible to truely say. He had never had to bother about such stuff before. Wana was his team leader but he was also the closest thing that the mechanical puppet user had to a friend. He had learnt so much about the world from what Wana said and what he did but this...display confused him. The dark haired girl has no idea that there is an enemy so close, mentally weighting up the possible drawbacks and benefits of plunging a kunai into her back. As usual his only concern was what Wana thought. Wana had not ordered the other Kemuri Nin to accompany him, he had ordered him to reduce the competition. Karakuri had done so, Iwa and Kusa no longer had any enterants in this exam. The remaining targets were the ones he had viewed as too powerful to attack alone; the team posing as from Konoha, the Suna nin, the Mizu Nin and the remaining Kemuri Team. Kotonii, Sero, Rifuto, Taran, Yoru, Arashi, Biwa, Keitiki, Sazae, Ryuuga, Murumasa, Hagoromo...Wana, Karakuri, Giri. And the Grass Nin Kama. Karakuri raises his hand to the slice in his shoulder that still leaked a dark stain onto the cloth of his shirt. Those numbers would have to be firther reduced before the end of the day. Tick. Once again he considers the two nin in front of him. His sensei had drummed into him a wary respect for those nin chosen by Hiroshi but even a skilled nin could be taken by surprise. Would it be hard to end the dark-haired girl right then and there, to drive this blade all the way through her head then scrape out her organs to make her puppet just like the other Genins unlucky enough to fall into his steel clutches? Tick. Karakuri fades away into the darkness.

In Kemurigakure was a sacred tree raising its branches in a salute to the sun. Its leaves shone in the early morning sun, reflecting back the green part of the light and using the other wavelengths to fuel its cells. From out of the blue a wind rattled its branches, bending them in on each other as bells chimed discordant and paper tags were whipped into a frenzied complex dance...but there was no-one there to see it.
With a final ‘twang’ the last razor sharp wire is sliced through and red wound ringed fingers, shallowly cut by many other similarly sharp wires, fling the kunai aside into a patch of dirt. Wriggling through the razor sharp threads with the remaining wires leaving large slits through the cloth of his outfit and making his haircut uneven Yoru pulls himself out from the net of wires. As if recognizing its puzzle has been beaten the entire structure sags slightly as he moves into the light. Yoru instinctively tries to brush his hair out of his eyes and winces at the pain in his many tiny wounds. Even for Sero having to unknot wire to get loose was just cruel. It was nowhere near fatal but it hurt. Taran crawls out beside him, wincing as he tries to stand, he had spent far too much time bent over today. The Suna Nin winces and rubs his hips. Far too much time. Yoru closes his eyes then opens them again, this time blazing red with the Sharingan. He rotates his wrist then twists it back at an unnatural angle as the bones of his arm extend and push their way through his wrist. With a barely perceptible nod to the Puppeteer the two set off at a run. The trap hadn't been meant to kill them. Sero would never end the game this early. But he would want to gloat, to humiliate Yoru before defeating him and although the Uchiha blood in him prevented him from worrying for his own safety he was greatly concerned for others.
The trees seem to part before them rather than face Yoru’s burning anger and Taran found he was quietly trying to stay directly behind him. Yes, Yoru had overestimated his own abilities and got them trapped but if anything had happened to Arashi because of it Taran pitied whatever agent of Sero had tried it. Yoru’s eyes were gleaming in a way no mortal eyes should. The trees with their deceitfully twisted tree roots remained just trees instead of rising up to snare their feet. A few eyes gleamed in the shadows but apparently thought better of interfering and disappeared again. It didn’t take too long for the venerable spreading oak to come into view. The branches all appeared completely empty even to his sharingan but Yoru just hoped that meant his genjutsu seal was operating as it had been designed to. His foot hit the ground then the underside of the tree branch, clinging tight to it by focusing his chakra as he leapt into the shelter. Arashi, smoking a large Tuna fish over a carefully controlled fire looks up as her team leader barges in through the genjutsu, eyes glowing red and blade-like bone starting to rip through his already tattered clothes. “Arashi-” He starts to ask but he doesn’t get any further than that before a blow smashes him clear across the room. Yoru impacts hard with the tree trunk and the bones grown from his Kekkai Genkai crack and shatter into rough uneven shards. A dribble of blood oozes from the corner of his mouth as his head is snapped backwards. Several of his ribs crack and have to be hurriedly patched together again and his vision flickers as he nearly loses consciousness. It was like being hit by a charging bull except bulls don’t have fangs and there was a mouth full of them currently being shoved in his face. Yoru freezes stock still and tries not to look threatening. He can't even see this creature’s eyes to use his sharingan. “No, bad boy!” Arashi scolds without looking up from her cooking. “Yoru is a friend.” With a growl and the stink of wet fur and old meat the teeth move back from Yoru’s head and allow him to see the bear-like snout behind it. The things lips draw back as it snarls silently at him, clearly not trusting the now distinctly battered looking Nin and turns back towards where the thin membrane of genjutsu has just been parted by Taran’s fingertips. The huge stubby clawed hand that could crush skulls like egg shells have the Suna Nin dangling by his ankles before he can summon any of his puppets. The creature snorts a puff of warm breath in Taran’s face as Yoru struggles to get up, as if the furred hybrid was wordlessly asking the question What about him? “Taran is a friend too.” Arashi says pointedly, actually looking up this time. With an exaggerated care the creature puts Taran down and swings off out through the genjutsu barrier to find more fish. Arashi crosses her arms. “And where have you two been? It’s nearly Lunch!”
Sazae has to shove her fist into her mouth to suppress the desire to giggle. Biwa and Wana. Biwa and Wana. No matter how she looked at it her desires were torn between hysterical laughter and a fan girl squeal. Biwa was always just so…well he was Biwa. All dark and mysterious and cool, any girl would have fallen for him. Wana was all; well there was no way to put it with out being offensive, but he was all gangly legs and round lens glasses and he was creepy even for one of Hideki’s students. And yet they were definitely together. No doubt about that, Sazae blushed, and it had been so cute to see them having breakfast under the sunrise and then Wana had run a finger over Biwa’s mouth so smoothly like a real player. She can’t help a small giggle at that thought and she’s glad she left before things got any more friendly between them otherwise she would never have been able to keep quiet. Sazae doesn’t bother sparing more than a few sorrowful thoughts for her unrequited crush. Biwa had someone to make him happy and Sazae didn’t want to get in the way of that for some selfish reason, the important thing was love after all. Still…the leader of their team and the leader of their enemy’s team, just sharing bread under the sun…
Sazae wasn’t exactly sure why it was so important that they had to beat Hideki’s team. He and Sensei were really good friends once, more than friends if the rumors were to be believed and no-one ever mentioned what it was that caused their falling out. The dark haired girl rummages in her pack for something for lunch. It was something pretty important she was sure and that made her feel uneasy. Sazae wasn’t the type of girl who liked feeling as if she was being manipulated, no matter how much she really wanted to be a Chunin she hated it on principle. With a conspicuously loud rustling Keitiki tramps out from the bushes, brushes a few stray leaves from her hair and flops down on a tree stump. Her upper lip wobbles. Sazae sighs internally and inwardly hopes she isn't going to throw a tantrum. "You did that on purpose!" Keitiki whines in a tone that penetrated like a dentist's drill. "Did what?" Sazae asks, distracted. Wana and Biwa under the tree with their arms around each other...She tries not to blush at the thought. "Sent me down the wrong path!" Keitiki whines, looking for a stone in her shoe. Privately Sazae thinks that she will never make Chunin if she keeps on complaining like this on every mission. Her teammates would throttle her before the enemy had a chance to. "Look be quiet and I'll tell you what happened." Sazae recounts the story as Keitiki's complaints lessen. By the end of it she is wide eyed with disbelief and when Sazae finishes by recounting the way Wana ran his fingers along Biwa's bandages the red-head blushes and hides a high pitched fan girl squeal beneath the bright pink and purple sleeve of her dress. "You're not upset?" Sazae asks cautiously. "I totally would be but BL is sooo sexy." Keitiki grins. "But you're going to say something boring like we're not allowed to tell anyone." "What?!" Sazae snaps out of her own private musings. "No you can't tell anyone!" "I have to keep all the good gossip to myself." Keitiki pouts. Thankfully Sazae doesn't have to put up with her for much longer before Biwa returns and that avenue of conversation is firmly sealed off.
The bright light of noon gleamed off the curve of the steel blade. It was a kama, just like his name and a tool more than a weapon. He had bought it not to fight with but to show his pride in his family's heritage. Now his proud weapon had been dirtied by unworthy blood. Kama was not by nature a fighter. His usual personality was of the calm and controlled leader, the kind of person who could make good snap decisions and think of strategies under pressure. That was the kind of person he had been before this exam. The forest had tried to break them with even more efficiency than Tsuru had. Of those that had entered here so many had died or worse and he had never thought there were so many things worse than death. In his calm and controlled manner Kama cleaned blood off the edge of his blade. A ninja endured all obstacles. A ninja didn't flinch under hardships. A Ninja made his way past the pain. He was alone... He had always tried his best for his team mates and they had been snaked out from under him, taken before he could move to save them then the thing had come after him. The strange blood that was not blood stained the edge of his kama black no matter how hard he scrubbed at it. To some the forest broke them but to others it fired their spirits like in a furnace to make them stronger... Kama cupped the handle of the blade loosely in the palm of his hand and carefully runs his finger along the edge of the blade. A tool for bringing in a harvest, not a weapon and he still wanted to bring honor to its intended use. He would do that by making his way out of the forest alive, the only Kusagakure candidate to do so. Scars crisscross the back of his hands from his long training and his grey eyes are stormy. Dark red blood stains his long green coat from his recent wounds. The marks are irregular; jagged slashes as if from blades of all different sizes but shallow. The thing was fast but it is with little pride that Kama knows he was the only one fast enough to escape the deeper wounds. The wound he had given it in return was a light one and it hadn't saved the lives of his teammates... Kama was going to fix that at any cost.
Curling its hairy knuckles around the branches the hybrid grunts cheerfully as it hauls itself back into the soft grasses of the woven nest and drops two of the fine tuna it has caught to the wide branch below before digging its yellowing fangs into the flesh of the largest of the fish it has kept for itself. It skillfully fillets the corpse with its stubby clawed paws and spits out the many small bones, twisting its head back at an angle that seems unnatural for its short neck and swallows the entire thing down to the yellow tinged tail. The softly pulsating Genjutsu Seal carefully eradicates the smoke from the cooking fire; preventing it from being detected although the rich heavenly smell permeates every inch of air at the base camp. Rather grumpily Yoru lies still against the thick tree branch where he had been thrown, watching the fish cook with an agonizing slowness as Taran obligingly rubs a healing ointment over the myriad of tiny wire cuts to prevent infection. The Puppet Master's own hands have an oily sheen of the ointment. Although Taran has suffered far less cuts from the wires Yoru insisted on treating his wounds first, making some crude remark about how the Puppet Master wasn't as much fun without his hands that really just meant the half Uchiha didn't like to see Taran hurt and both of them knew it. Carefully Arashi spits the two extra fish onto two straight long branches as holds them over her cooking fire where they hiss as they touch the hot coals. She takes her own fully cooked meal by the charred handle and takes a bite. Yoru's stomach rumbles audibly and he blushes as he looks away. The fruit they had found had not actually been that filling in the end... Taran grins and dab a bit of the ointment on the end of Yoru's nose, his way of reminding the team leader their own lunch will be ready soon enough. Inwardly Yoru's seethes with anger at his stupid selfish brother and his cheap tricks. A future vessel of Orochimaru-sama should try harder than that to increase his potential instead of inefficiently sabotaging the competition. "Taran, Arashi..." He says slowly and deliberately, already starting to lay the foundations for the plans ahead. "What do you say we pay back my dearest brother..." "I don't think it would be wise..." Taran sort of mumbles, worrying more about actually passing the exam than getting back at Sero for something so petty. Not that he didn't think the younger Uchiha brother needed a good kicking where it hurt but that could be saved for the individual rounds. "Nah lets do it, It'll be awesome." Arashi says as she hands over the cooked fish to the half Uchiha. Yoru takes the fish and tears off a strip of its scaled skin. "Great. Here's my idea..." The dark haired Uchiha smiles a small smile. Very slowly he was getting used to a normal kind of happiness but still his usual happiness was small cruelties he could inflict on others in course of fulfilling the will of Orochimaru. In his temporary den, a hollow of stone lined with fallen leaves that disguised him from predators, Sero enjoyed his own meal. The dark skinned catfish had pale milk colored eyes from their birth in the deep underground cavern lakes and were highly prized for the piquant taste of their flaky meat. A rare delicacy enjoyed at Orochimaru's table on special occasions and it made Sero feel celebratory as he licked the last of the fish's juices from his fingers and stretched languidly; a lazing python after a solid feed. Inwardly he is abuzz with various plans and schemes, already using what he knew about the remaining contestants to figure out the best way to harm them. Extortion, blackmail, kidnapping, such schemes were as an essential part of his artillery as his kunai. The serpents he had smuggled in with the consent of his father flickered their bright red tongues in his ear as they whispered to him the secrets they had learnt. His pale fingers stroked along the serpents muscled back as the fire burnt down to the last glowing embers. Soon the sun would set and the night portion of the exams would begin. That would be the time for him to strike...
At his side Kotonii carefully picks apart her own catfish with a near clinical precision. The fish is indeed tasty and its oily flesh contains trace amounts of a poison, enough to aid in building immunity to far more deadly poisons and give it a powerful rich taste. Rifuto waits with a ring of small but deep bleeding wounds around his bare arms from fishing with his bare hands for their dinner. The fishing technique he used involved dipping his fingers into the dark, almost completely black waters and wriggling them like worms until something tried to swallow them. He had ended up the bite marks from the catfish extending to his shoulders. His eyes are perfectly blank and even though he has not eaten all day no hunger shows on his face. He will eat when Sero orders him to. Smiling the half Uchiha beckons him over and rests a hand on the blank-eyed boy's shoulder, whispering a complicated order in the other's ear before running a finger over the bleeding rent caused by the catfish teeth. He is so completely under Sero's command that he doesn't even feel the pain. Feeling a faint flicker of what could have been pity Sero also orders him to eat. At his lord's command Rifuto picks up a fish raw and devours it all, including the bones. The wounds Sero leaves to clot on their own rather than bother expending the flicker of chakra necessary to heal them. He lays back against the bed of leaves, mentally keeping track of the passing time. Only a few hours of the exam remained and Sero was content. From outside comes a long drawn out dry throated roar that causes the half Uchiha to look up. "Yeti." He states coolly, looking down at the dossier in front of him to reconfirm the information from Orochimaru's research. As it said the bear and ape-like hybrid was one of the older of the artificially created creatures of the forest. Whatever secret lives the patchwork creatures lived in the treetops attacks on humans were very rare due to some shared racial memory of the pain of their creation. They were also surprisingly tolerant of what they thought of as children so they wouldn't bother him... Except this one sounded rather aggravated. Sero uses a curved fishbone to pick his teeth with as he mulls things over. He had been a good boy for this entire exam and he was sure the corpse of such an interesting creation would pacify his father after the theft of the scroll. "Kotonii, Rifuto..." He says simply as he rises and draws the dull grey blade of his favorite dagger, the bright glimmer of chakra around its edge giving it the cutting edge of the finest scalpel.
Snuffling around the hybrid wrinkles its snout-like nose and draws back its lip from black gums in a snarl as sniffs at the air and picks up a new scent in the freshly trampled leaves. Its curved yellowing fangs show as it runs a pink tongue over its lips and falls forwards onto all fours to get a better fix on it. Knuckling the ground with its longer forelimbs it blinks its light blue eyes, grunting under its breath as it picks up the unfamiliar scent on the crushed vegetation. Still quizzical about its surroundings the Yeti snuffles around, moving with a surprising lightness of its muscle bound bulk. It is only when it turns its head to the side it notices the shadowed figure that is slowly walking towards it. It snarls, showing yellowed fangs and black gums as the dull orange fur of its back rises. When the figure does not back away a deep growl rises in its throat and it leans back on its powerful hind-legs, muscles coiling to spring into battle. It's black claws coil inwards as it roars its strange half and half dry throated bellow. Snapping its brutal predator's jaws the hybrid leaps forwards, clearing the distance between them in a blink of an eye as it leaps. Its sharp fanged jaws open wide, the warm fetid scent of old meat wafting from the wide throat as its blue eyes gleam with bloodlust. The horrible scent of chemicals and fear lingering on the child's skin brings forth an ancient anger. There is no fear in Rifuto's blank face. Wires tied to his arms and legs are pulled tight by the fall, triggering the trap. A fine net of wire that glow with Chakra drops over the creature's shoulders and as the jutsu used in its creation activates the net suddenly becomes heavy enough to force the Yeti to its knees. It roars and struggles as Sero approaches it with a smirk. "Good boy." The Uchiha says, bright red flaring in his eyes as he tries to met the blue gaze of the creature to bend it to his will. Instead of it falling docilely under his control an equal blaze of red flares in its eyes and it bats the net aside. "Yoru." Sero hisses in anger, leaping back away from a bone-crushing swipe of a paw and suddenly he finds his feet frozen in place by what appears to be vines of metal. "Yo." Yoru says, leaping down to confront his brother. "Let's talk." A loop of wire cuts the branch was standing on into equal sections as Rifuto twists free of the Yeti's grip to obey his primary orders to defend his Lord. The two teams crash into battle.
The orange furred hybrid snaps at the air, snuffling as it clears Yoru's genjutsu from his head. Its blue eyes cannot see clearly through the chakra haze of fighting ninja and the dust they kick up around them. Its keen nose picks out the scents of strange metal amongst the flesh scents and curls its lips in disgust. To it this display of supposed military 'might' is pathetic compared to the bone shattering brawls of its own kind. Although it hadn't minded unduly about the genjutsu (if it did it would have been smashing Yoru into a tree trunk right now) this conflict is nothing it wants to be involved in. In the fighting it picks up the scent of the girl and the metal stick that smelt of death and picks her up in a powerful one-handed bear hug, wrapping its other massive hand around a low-hanging tree branch and pulling them up out of danger. A thrown dart of black metal, tip gleaming with dark purple poison, hisses past her face to bury its needlelike point into the bark of a nearby tree. Around the puncture wound in the bark veins of sickly yellow start to spread through the tree as the yeti scales it with Arashi still held in its arms. It snorts warm breath in her face almost scornfully, as if questioning her taste in friends before opening its mouth wide, showing off each one of its pointed yellow fangs and its rough curled tongue. "Arashi, going back to nest now." It says with a hint of snarl as if it is painful to move its jaw into the correct position to form the words. "Not going back to House of Pain." Arashi falls silent for a bit in thought. "You can talk very well. I didn't think you could talk." She eventually tells the hybrid as it swings up the tree trunk to gaze down at the battle below. The yeti snorts in derision. "Course can talk. Made from human parts." "Your grammar isn't as good." Arashi points out. The hybrid's orange fur is coarse against his skin. "You try complete sentences with face like this." The yeti says with difficulty, still contorting its jaw to get the words to sound right. Arashi giggles and pulling back a dark lip from its yellow fangs the hybrid snorts and draws up a deep rasping growl from deep inside its throat that it takes a while for her to realize is laughter.
Moving through the air without even a hiss of movement the next one of the black metal darts flies towards the girl. She had barely had time to see the tiny fleck of blackness in the air let alone identify it before her view is blocked out by the hybrid's orange furred shoulder. The dart itself is lost in the thick orange fur as the hybrid's strange animal laughter is cut off. From around the wound spidering patterns of yellow trace their way from impact site, swiftly distributing the toxins through the creature's bloodstream. With its muscled arms still around Arashi's shoulders its fingers suddenly lose feeling and with it their grip. Unbalanced by its own weight the yeti starts to fall and drags Arashi with it. With a solid thud the hybrid hits the ground back first with an audible crack of fracturing spine. Its large hands rest across its chest, holding the girl pinned against his lighter furred stomach from the simple weight of his limbs. One leg has shattered at right angles. Visibly the rate its chest rises and falls has begun to slow. The Suna Kunoichi blinks in surprise at the sudden fall. Sheltered by the hybrid's powerful arms she has survived with little more than a few smarting bruises but the yeti's arm still draped across her shoulders has her pinned underneath it and from the stinging pain in her arm she knows her wrist has snapped. Although it must be lying near the hilt of the katana she couldn't draw it even if she wanted to. "A...ra...s..." The hybrid manages to gasp out. A trickle of red blood runs from its open jaw before the light leaves its eerily human blue eyes and it is dead, jaws still half open trying to pronounce the last syllable.
From a distance she can hear Yoru's cry to retreat and in the smoke hear a shifting sound of metal on metal as Taran and his puppets obey his direction. She struggles to get up but, unable to brace herself on her broken hand, the weight of the dead yeti's arm on her is too much to shift and it squashes her flat against the creamy yellow furred chest. Dark eyes look down at her and as she falls flat again Arashi twists her head up to see. Beneath the panes of glass Kotonii's eyes are merciless. The darkness in her gaze speaks volumes her act of coy complacency never did as she raises the pretty purple silk fan she holds clutched in her left hand. Looking much like an antique the purple fabric is decorated with painted designs of bright spring flowers but the spokes seem larger than usual. Poison tipped, each of the metal prongs is a dart the same as the one currently lodged in the yeti's shoulder. Arashi's eyes darken but she does not tremble or attempt to plead for mercy and with a twitch of annoyance Kotonii doesn't bother gloating. Instead in once graceful fan dancer's arch she snaps open the fan, flicks in around and snaps it shut. Eight darts slam into Arashi's body, each one carrying enough deadly poison to kill a creature more than twice her size. The yellow veins don't even have time to show on her skin before her heart stops beating and there are two dead of poisoning lying in each other’s arms on the battlefield.

In Kemurigakure there was a white poplar tree. Although it grew tall and spread many branches up towards the setting sun it had only spent a few years in its current spot. The last of the sun's bright rays turned every one of the shining bells into gold as it slunk low beneath the horizon. Soon it would be the moonlight gliding across each surface, turning each one into a brighter and fresher shade of silver until bells of tin and bells of silver would gleam alike in magnificence. To the skies above they jingled their song in the passage of a stiff breeze, each tiny chime like a mockery of a funeral bell
The chill of the night had descended and with it the harshness of reality. At this time of year as the days began to grow shorter the nights had started to get longer and as the warmth of the sunny day receded it left behind the chilly bite of a cloudless night. With the dark the day predators slinked away, their hunt done with for now and let the night predators have another shot at the tough meat that remained on show. A hunting owl landed in the branches below him, its spread wings barely brushing the dark pine needles as it shuffles faintly along the bark, keeping a grip on the rough tree bark. He can see the slight tilt of its feathered head as it flies down on silent wings. He can even see the terror in the eyes of the mouse on the forest floor below as talons bite into its back and extinguish its life. The cold night breeze prickles his skin through his thin robe of white as Kaguya Kuromaru surveyed the battlefield. What few genins were still in this competition had been scattered far through the great forest with little chance of meeting. With both the veins on his forehead and the surgery scars of its implanting bulging against his skin with the effort of keeping his gaze spread so far Kuromaru can tell that none have quite the same cheerful determination as when they entered. Save perhaps for Giri... Somehow detecting his gaze across the vast distance the albino swordsman faces his direction and give him a little wave. Kuromaru turns his head away, not wanting to spy on the Son of Kaze and at the same time he observes the owl's hunt he sees the two remaining members of the Suna Team gather up their fallen comrade from the yeti's arms as they retreat and the Konoha Team seal away the hybrid's broken corpse.
Carefully the proctor climbs back down the tree, a faint glimmer of chakra around each foot keeping his descent steady. The pine, tall and majestic, stood like a sentry at the very edge of the forest and gave an unparalleled view for all that climbed it. Through the day the shinobi archer had watched the battle from the topmost branches, leaving his observation post only for drink, food and to perform the task he was doing now of informing others on the exams progression. The nin of every participating village had gathered here to watch the forest's edge. Kuromaru's bare feet were nearly silent as he lithely dropped the last few meters to the ground. Here the tension in the air vibrated like a plucked wire. Those teachers whose students had either failed or died watched the forest with a sullen hollow-eyed gaze, silently resenting the unflinching trees for what they have done but letting no emotion penetrate their mask of carefully cultivated apathy. Those students who had chosen to fail rather than die wait at their sensei's side or tend to the wounds the forest has dealt them. There is none of the festivity of the opening ceremonies here. During the day from the second the exam had started Kuromaru had walked among the Nin of all villages, informing in a cool, calming tone and seeing his unwelcome message be received with a flash of determination in dark eyes or a subtle tensing of the jaw, all signs of an unhappy shinobi trying to restrain their emotions. It was always harsh to hear the students you had looked after and cared for had been taken away.
Over it all the Hokage and potential future Kemurikage watched. The strange eerie blue-white lights of the Palace of Stars illuminated the area around them, each orb like fox fire apparently suspended in mid-air. To keep away the chill of the approaching night both elected to trade in a bit of their dignity for a warm blanket draped over their laps and a hot meal. Akira's blanket appeared to be a colorful patchwork of many different materials all stitched together rather poorly. He made no attempt to explain it. The proctor finishes his hushed discussion with the Suna Jonin who had been responsible for teaching Yoru's team, informing her of the death of Arashi. There is a small twitch in the woman's jaw but it passes too swiftly to look into. Kuromaru approaches the two village heads and bows deeply before he begins to speak. "The exam is almost over." He says softly. "It is highly probable that all the current candidates will be moving on to the next exam. However on those estimated numbers we will have to have a preliminary round." Again the Kaguya bows, his long silver-white hair falling across his face. With a slurp louder than he intended Naruto swallows a last gulp of noodles and beef flavored soup. He is beginning to expect this amounts to bribery but this ramen was good. "So who's in charge of organizing that?" He asks. Kuromaru's face becomes a careful blank and he begins a rapid whispered conversation with Akira. The only words the Hokage can make out are 'everyone entered' and 'has to be neutral.' His face set in his usual expression of deferential apology Akira turns back to the Hokage and tries to reassure him that while Naginata was...eccentric she wasn't allowed to cause unnecessary harm to any of the genins and, although crude, would be a proctor that ensured the competition down to the final exam would be fair. Carefully avoiding the gaze of both village heads Kuromaru shuffles away to ring the end of round bell. Removing the ancient relic with care from its padded case the Kaguya holds still the bell of pure blown glass, incised with twining patterns of Lotus Vine and with the other carefully holds the rod of glass.
"So why this Naginata have to be neutral?" The Hokage asks with an uncharacteristic sharpness in his gaze. Akira flinches back under the look, Naruto's eyes were like two slivers of blue diamond. Konohagakure's leader had been through too much to not understand something was going on (although it had been going on for a long while before he started to understand) and, despite the threats that had been laid against him Akira did not want to lie. "Things here haven't been too good lately." The Scorpion Man says, dropping his voice to a conspiratorial whisper so his words couldn't be overheard. "You could almost call it a civil war." Naruto nods once to get him to go on. Lightly Kuromaru taps the bell and the resulting silvery sound is a chime almost unnatural in its clear beauty. Although the bell that produced it was no larger than the palm of ones hand the sound traveled as though distance was irrelevant. The sound could not be ignored nor muffled by genjutsu it it rang clearly through the entire forest to let all know the trial was over and, in whispers, Akira began to tell his story.
"As you are well aware Kaze-sama died a few years ago. With the death of Hayato-sama soon afterwards the power structure of the village became unbalanced." With his servants no longer there to support him against his enemies the old king trembled on his throne and died. Through the tangled web of lies and deceit that formed Kemurigakure politics even those not part of the web began to feel the tremors. The king was dead and from his empty throne discord was soon to spread. Kaze had served to stabilize the village and please both sides of a conflict equally. With his soft words he could balance out the extremes in others and so make peace and cooperation replace old enmities but without him the system all began to break down. With no mediator to simply talk with each group saw its own needs as more important than that of the others and tried by force to take what it needed and protect what it already had. There was infighting, as much with words as with swords but the end result was this: Kemurigakure was no longer a hidden village, it was an argument. In fact this state of disrepair, of being unable to take the actions a new village needed to survive, was only changed when the time to crown a new king came.
The crown was a simple circlet of black metal, a large ring without ornamentation or design, yet as it absorbed light it seemed to radiate authority. The metal was always cool and blacker than midnight. It was the crown of a Night King. It had been created to be worn in darkness. The fingertips that brushed its surface were speckled with tiny white scars. A feeling almost like an electric shock ran through her entire body as soon as her fingertips touched it. The icy feeling of the immense chakra contained in the simple circlet flowing through her frame was terrifying yet strangely exhilarating at the same time. It was simple, pure power. No doubt the crown of Kemuri's King was in the highest possible rank of Artifacts. Tightly she fully gripped the circlet of black metal, lifting it off its purple velvet cushion. In the darkness of the full heart of Kemurigakure's volcano mountain a single voice sounds tinny and insignificant as it echoes through the halls of twisted hardened rock. "Sazae?" It says as a shape seemingly formed of a different texture shape in the shadows breaks free of the surrounding darkness. Always following a few steps behind comes too the pale boy with blind eyes as light blue as the strange fox lights. His face remains a cool mask even as the others splits into a relieved grin. "Hey Sazae I don't think you should try to pawn that." Hiroshi jokes, shoving his hands into his pockets as he smiles. The glorious raw power is still being pumped into her through her arm. It makes the Thief Girl feel invincible and more than a bit reckless. "I'm not going to sell it. I'm going to wear it." Even her lips tingle with the feeling of the chakra charge. "This village needs a leader." "Sazae..." Hiroshi's cheerful tone starts to fade, to be replaced with a deep uncertainty. "I can do it you know." Sazae says as she tightens her grip on the black metal. "I've had training from Kaze, he always wanted this to happen so there can be someone to look after this village and care for it like he did. So I'm taking this crown for myself-" Too late she notices the barely suppressed rage in her other team mate and the knife-like talons close like shears around her wrist. "You will never replace him!" The blind boy screams aloud with rage. It is the first time the girl has ever heard him speak and her pause of surprise is her undoing as the shock of it numbs her for long enough for the metal talons to close around her wrist. The dark metal crown with the severed hand still tightly clutching it falls to the ground in a spray of blood. "Hideki!" Hiroshi cries in a panic as the blind boy raises high his bloodied claws and slashes violently at the girl's face. "Hideki, stop!" Hiroshi grabs the metal limb at the shoulder, trying to pull it back. Breaking the hold Hideki plunges his talons into Sazae's chest, straight into her heart. A dribble of red runs from her dead lips and Hiroshi's orange eyes open wide, his inhuman blood rising to the surface. First he had lost his teacher then he had lost her... "W-Why?!" He screams as Hideki pulls his claws free and starts to clean them. The blind boy remains calm in the face of his companions fury. In his mind he has done no wrong, even though Sazae's blood had splattered his face. This is turn only increases Hiroshi's anger. The tips of his highlighted hair start to smoke and his skin starts to peel back. "Even if she was wrong you didn't have to kill her!" Hiroshi simply means to push the other over but he hasn't noticed the rust red spines of rock pushing their way out of his skin and instead plunges a claw of stone into Hideki's chest. Blood oozes from the deep wound as Hiroshi's anger immediately recedes to be replaced by a blank horror. Hideki slumps to the ground silently, refusing even a word to the one that has betrayed him. Hiroshi carries him back through the mountain's heart before the blind boy can fully die and Hideki is eventually revived, his heart replaced by one of clockwork but to this day he still has not forgiven his God of Stone and Flames...
"Right now the village is divided. Both Hiroshi and Hideki are supporting a candidate for the leadership of the village and they're both equally popular so most nin are siding with one or the other. To prevent war the entire thing is being decided on whose team can do better in the chuunin exams." Naruto blinks. It was a long story and he didn't really get most of it. "So this King is the real head of the village?" "Yes." Akira says politely, thinking that it is almost visible of the Hokage's face the way he's struggling to get to grips with this information. "So what does that make you?" "Someone who knows how to be polite to visiting dignitaries." "Harsh." The Hokage takes another sip of his ramen. The Scorpion Man nods and pulls his blanket up closer. He had told too much and the night air suddenly seemed much colder to him. It is with false cheer and a fervent desire to change the subject that he catches sight of the first shadowy figures emerging from the treeline. "Oh look, the genins are back."
Carefully Yoru lays the body down on the branch of the oak tree. It is already begun to stiffen, the skin turned a faint shade of yellow. The Uchiha pulled free and threw away the darts before they had returned to their shelter and the eight small puncture wounds do not bleed so much as ooze a bitter dark fluid from the poisoning. The black katana, no help at all in the end, rests at her side. Almost sullenly it seems to be vibrating. Taran's normally cheerful face looks hard and weary. Yoru throws his arms around the puppet master's shoulders to comfort him. There were no tears; shinobi did not cry. Above the nest of dried grass lays empty, the body of Arashi's mysterious protector left behind for Sero to take. There is still the faintest lingering scent of cooked fish in the air. The fire she had sat at to cook still glowed warm with the fast few fading embers. Once again the seal is parted by furred fingers as with a thump something lands in the woven grass nest. Yoru looks up and the yeti children look down at him. There are three of them, human in size with a short covering of orange fur and hairless faces. One has two nubs of white bone, a pair of juvenile horns, curling from his forehead. "I think that yeti was a mother..." Yoru says softly as the three sniff the nest. With a soft thump one of the girl yeti's leaps down and approaches them with curiosity in her blue eyes. Carefully she lightly touches Arashi's arm, tilting her head in an unspoken question. Taran nods, eyes like granite.
Smirking Sero looks over the perfectly preserved specimen Kotonii has managed to procure for him. "Pity about the broken bones." He says as he looks the corpse over. "It was up a tree at the time Sero-sama. It was unlikely to climb down." The red-haired girl replies quietly. "Of course." Sero mutters, drawing the last lines of black on the scroll. With a sound like a small thunderclap and a wisp of white smoke the body is sucked into the sealing scroll. For a moment the dark markings on it shine a bloody red before fading back to black. "This will please Father." Sero says as he slings the scroll over his back and arrogantly clicks his fingers. Rifuto unfolds to stand at his side.
The bell rings clearly over the midnight woods.
First to fully emerge from the treeline to stand at their sensei's side once again are the team from Kirigakure. Blood-dripping blades are slung over the shoulders of the two males as they appear to escort their female team mate from the dark trees. She has a spray of red blood across the left side of her face but it is not her own. They exit the trees the same way they entered, like predators on a hunt.
Sero and his two, walking in neat order through the trees, are the next to emerge. Kotonii and Rifuto both settle down in the short grasses to rest and recover while the dark haired boy talks softly to his sensei and hands over the sealing scroll from his back without being seen.
Taran and Yoru emerge from the forest together, both staying close to the other and with no spark of relief in their eyes at seeing the end of the exams. Upon seeing Sero waiting smugly for them the Suna Puppeteer lurches forwards a step to be halted by Yoru's warning hand upon his shoulder. The two quietly take their place, discussing their own plans in hushed tones.
Biwa's team strolls cheerfully from the trees as if it was just another sunday stroll, their arrival heralded by Keitiki's loud complains that she got another rock in her shoe.
Wana's team arrives at the same time and the two teams exchange a charged look before pointedly turning around and returning to their appropriate teachers. Karakuri is still clutching at his wounded shoulder.
Then for a while there is a dead silence and Kama appears in the treetops above them.
The grass nin is a terrifying sight, his long green outfit stained with blood and his eyes as cold as ice. When he doesn't move his sensei slowly beckons with a finger. Kama looks down at him, his family's blade with its stain of black still clutched tight in his grasp. His voice echoes over the assembled nin. "I hereby defect to Kemurigakure." Before anyone can think of what to make of this the genin turns tail and disappears back into the trees.
Slowly and almost mockingly Akira starts to applause. "Well done to all our finalists." He announces in the face of the cool glaring from the Kusagakure Jonin. "We'll be starting our preliminary round soon but until then-"
"Screw it, I'm here." A voice mutters as the next exams proctor physically steps from the ground. She runs a hand through her waist long hair irritably. Said hair had possibly once been blonde but had been dyed a dark black-red from blood. A dark tattoo gouged into the skin of her face forms a symbol of an upside-down triangle enclosed in a circle. The sign of the Jashinist church. She had obviously been interrupted in the middle of one of the faith's bizarre rituals of bloodshed; three long blades of metal stood at odd angles from her midriff. In distaste Kuromaru edges away from her. She immediately takes his seat on the stone in front of the forest. "Look I know it's weird for me to be up before the Festival of Blood but I'm just as qualified as you are so there's no reason to be ******** rude." She spits at the pale Kaguya before turning and surveying the weary genin's before her. "Alright then, let's get this slaughter started." She says as she claps her hands in a business like manner. Blinking her blood red eyes Naginata points out two random genins. "You two, kill each other." There is a chilly pause before Akira gives a weary sigh and motions for silence. "If all non participating entrants and their teachers could please clear the area the first of the preliminary matches..." He consults the team sheets to check who the selected pair are before continuing. "Karakuri vs Taran is about to begin...And killing your opponent will not be unnecessary." "Heathens." Naginata grumbles as the two begin to square up in the rapidly emptying space in front of the forest.

In Kemurigakure there was a white poplar tree. Its bells cheerfully chimed to themselves as the paper tags waved and spun in the faintest of breezes in a pattern known only to themselves. The wind blow and the bells sounded a small dissonant chord. The wind died down and the tree waited.
On the small area of dirt and cleared scrub the two faced each other, puppeteer to puppeteer. The faintest breeze stirred the dry dust around their feet as the two waited for the signal, one burning for a victory and the other merely expecting it. With a soft scraping sound a circle in the dirt was dragged around them by a bored looking Naginata, the dry dirt being moistened by the blood that still drips from her open wounds as she does so. The other shinobi, the jonin and the few teams of students that remained, watched in a lifeless silence at the strangely corpse-like figures movements. She turned with a whirlwind swiftness towards the nearest one, fixing bloody red eyes on the unfortunate man as she pulls herself up to her full height. Up close it is easier to see that the large mark of the Jashinist sign has not been simply tattooed on her face but that a chisel has been used to gouge the flesh and the thick scarred void has been filled with black ink. In the throes of her bloodied ecstasy when the traditional signs of her prayers appeared alongside it she was even more terrifying a figure. The three blades of black still shoved straight through her body, dripping droplets of red on the dry straggly grasses, would have killed anyone else yet she stood before him with all the confidence of one truly unafraid to die. "Find something amusing about me ********?" She snarls at the man. Slowly the Min in the Konoha Headband blinks his golden slit pupil eyes and shrugs. A faint smile twitches the corner of Naginata's lips. "The same goes for the rest of you ********!" She turns to bellow at the other nin who tactfully try to avoid her gaze. In the designated area Akira cups his head with his human hand in a clear gesture of despair while the Hokage tries not to laugh. Finishing the circle in the dirt Naginata flops back down on the rock, laying back against the stone with her arms crossed behind her head. With a soft organic squelch the blades through her shift their positions. An indecent smile crosses her lips as she watches the two genin's squaring up to fight. "Let the slaughter begin ********. Time to dedicate your bodies to the will of Jashin." She announces and waves a hand for the start of the battle. "Please do not kill your opponent." Akira hurriedly states as he picks up the list of official rules for the battle and tries to ignore the flurry of inventive cursing from Naginata as she hears each one.
Face to face the two waited in the circle drawn in the dirt, a brief wind carrying a puff of dry dust across the few straggly green grasses between them. Taran stood, hair and clothes dishevelled, face drawn and a gleam of healing salve still visible on the many shallow cuts that ringed his fingers with red. Karakuri stood, no sign of exhaustion on his face but still cradling his bleeding shoulder in hand. The wound was far from shallow. Akira's nervous voice stutters out the rules for the match; leaving the circle is an immediate loss, no outside assistance is allowed, exam proctors may step in to declare the battle over and the winner will be declared when one of the two is obviously defeated. His words are occasionally interrupted by a fresh barrage of insults and criticism from the irritable priestess now lying back casually in an expanding pool of her own blood.
Barely perceptibly Karakuri's gaze shifts to the side where his team mates wait on a grassier verge. This was the true borders of Kemuri country, the fertile plains of the grass lands being where most of Konohagakure's farmers maintained fields all the way up to the great forest itself. Closer to the start of Kemuri's border forest the uneven and untended hills resembled the coils of a sleeping snake, growing turf on its body. The white-blue lights from the hanging glass orbs reflect light off Wana's round lensed glasses. He returns Karakuri's questioning gaze with a faint smile and mouths something in encouragement. Taran knows without looking that if he did the same Yoru would offer him some encouragement too but he doesn't turn. Arashi's death had hurt him more deeply than he wanted to admit. Right now he felt he really needed the break before the third part of the exams to mourn. Being thrown into another fight barely ten minutes after his last disastrous battle...it was like dragging sandpaper over a fresh wound. In the ice blue lights seemingly suspended in mid air like trapped stars this place seemed to have an almost supernatural air. From the darkened silhouettes of the treeline a strange sound rent the midnight air. A chorus of mournful howling filled the sleeping forest and sent shivers down the spine. It was a song, sung without words but with a deep meaning that reached past comprehension to grip at the heart. The terrible loneliness it spoke of nearly tipped Taran to his knees, around the field of nin many of the others did fall for a few brief seconds, just feeling the pain of loss until as suddenly as it had started the strange bestial notes fade into the still and chilly air and the Suna Nin rises once again, his resolve hardened.
In his shelter Akira blinks his black compound eyes at the unusual sound of a Yeti Funeral. With a swift flicker of motion and a puff of white smoke Taran summons his three puppets to his side with the all too familiar sound of wood chattering on wood. Naruto nudges Akira, causing the scorpion man to flinch in surprise and drop his thermos flask of hot Cocoa. It clatters noisily to the floor and sprays the hot drink all over the Kemuri man's feet. "I've seen those things in action before. Two bowls of ramen says you're guy's going to lose." The Hokage says confidently as he leans back.
A chill night wind passes across the circle, the soft silence it brings in its wake soon shattered by the creaking of the puppet's joints and an outburst of swearing from Naginata at the lack of action. The puppets, still with the seal of Sasori of the Red Sand upon them, wait suspended and unmoving. The gleaming chakra strings attached to Taran's fingers are ready to register movement but he waits for his opponent to make a move. Slowly Karakuri removes his hand from the slice that has been taken from his shoulder, his fingers stained black with the fluid that has dripped from the wound. He makes the first hand sign of a summoning of his own and it is in that moment Taran strikes. From Salamander's toothy jaws a thick column of jet black smoke spews out, billowing and concealing the entire area of the circle in seconds. Visibility is instantly reduced to zero in the thick cloud of poisoned fog. Karakuri instantly abandons his hand signs to reach a hand into the side of his boot and pull forth a string of sharp edged kunai, each fine point shimmering with poison. Swiftly he hurls them through the air at the spot he last saw Taran standing in a formation that guarantees any one trying to leap out of the way of one blade is struck by another. With a long drawn out ringing each blade bounces off another bit of metal, salamander's raised ruff, and falls to the ground useless. The earth beneath his feet splits and two puppet hands clutch Karakuri's ankles, dragging him over onto his back. More puppet hands break the soil to pin his arms before he can form any hand signs, keeping the Kemuri Genin struggling against the hard packed dirt like a tortoise knocked on its back. "You're quite something aren't you?" Taran says softly as he emerges from the thick smoke and kneels on the trapped Karakuri's chest. There's a genuine sort of admiration in his voice as he runs his fingertips in a rivulet of the dark fluid oozing from Karakuri's wounded shoulder. It stains his fingertips black as the Suna nin carefully sniffs it. What runs from the Kemuri Nin's veins is not blood but a very high quality oil. "A puppet designed to look completely human, you even have a pulse. I didn't think Kemuri had that kind of puppet making talent." A pane of whiteness slipping over his eyes, the sign of all of Hideki's army of the Retrieved, and he struggles to activate his hidden mechanisms but Taran had been closely observing him for a long time and was not just arbitrarily kneeling on Karakuri's chest. A few ratchets click uselessly and thump gently into the Suna Nin's shins but as long as the pressure of the puppet master's knees is cutting off the flow of a few crucial cables he can't do anything. It is a critical flaw in the design of the Karakuri Ningyo but one that couldn't be addressed without taking him over the limit of 80% human, as Taran had known. Strange shapes of metal boil and twist beneath the skin as Karakuri's body grows in an attempt to break free of his bonds but Taran has had more practise at holding on with his knees than he would ever admit and it takes a mere twitch of his fingers to adjust the separate pieces of Crow holding the Kemuri Nin down to adjust their grip. Angrily the mechanism's white eyes start to flash with genjutsu but Taran's eyes are closed as he continues talking. "Let's see here..."
Karakuri thrashes uselessly as Taran slides his fingers across the mechanical puppet's neck to the back of his head. Aside from being a bit cooler than usual, often the only sign that gave away one of Hideki's more carefully crafted Retrieved, the illusion of humanity was perfect. "There we are." With a soft click a section of skull slides back in Taran's hand. Though he never enjoyed it he had read of the processes used to create human puppets but this seemed to be taking it to illogical extremes just to allow the puppet to compete. Though what he holds in his hand is unmistakably a neat square section of human skull where the brain would be underneath his ticking gears. Karakuri struggles all the more, his white eyes wide with panic. Again the metal thumps against Taran's legs, hard enough to bruise this time, but still prevented from making the connection it needs. Carefully the Suna Nin runs his fingertips over the access panel he has found. Though he can feel cold metal it is set in warm, throbbing flesh. A strange kind of semi-organic clear lubricant from the turning gears sticks to his fingers and turns his stomach. Though it made sense that this was how the puppet's mechanical mind was adjusted the systems used were unfamiliar to him until his fingers alight on the tip of a pane of metal, rectangular in shape, set into the skull itself. "Here we are..." Taran presses it and with a click the pane pops loose, the silver gears inside starting to slow in their rotations. The poison in the smoke does not bother him, there was no point in him using a toxin he wasn't already immune to, and, as Karakuri's struggles were still as vigorous as ever, there was some serious doubts as to whether the mechanism actually breathed. Most importantly it still served in concealing the scene from view. Though he felt pretty bitter he can't help but admire the guts of the Kemuri Nin who went to so much trouble to allow a mechanism to compete as a genin, the least he could do in return for the pleasure of dismantling the thing was to make sure the deception wasn't uncovered so soon. Though Taran can't see it Karakuri's eyes widen in fear as the panel clicks free. Leaving the pane where it lies, its many teeth no longer affecting the turning of the gears, Taran moves his fingers on to the tip of the next pane. In desperation Karakuri raises up then slams down his head in a reckless attempt to crush his adversary's hand in the moving clockwork of his own brain. The tips of the grinding gears graze some skin from the tips of Taran's fingers before he can pull them away.
Karakuri pants in exhaustion, a pool of spilt black oil running from his shoulder. Carefully Taran reaches out for the next pane, certain removing all three will be enough to switch the mechanism off. "N-no." Karakuri protests and thrashes from side to side as best he can in an attempt to stop the Suna Nin. Taran's fingers brush the second the pane. "Stop it!" The mechanism hisses as the second pane is depressed inwards then pops back out. The movements of the turning gears inside Karakuri slow further as, without the polished panes to correct any mistakes, his thoughts start to wander and strength drains from his veins with the dripping oil. He barely struggles at all as the pane of white slips back from his gaze and Taran reaches for the third pane. "Daisy, Daisy, give me your answerrrrrr t-t-ttttoooo..." With the last click of the final pane Karakuri's sentence cuts off as does any movement from him at all. The the steady drip of oil ceases. The silver gears stop turning, the sudden absence of the soft ticking noise harsh to Taran's ears. Taran slides the access panel back into place, leaving the panes still hanging loosely from their slots, and tentatively stands. The mechanism lays still where it has fallen, even the faint ticking that had first alerted the Puppetmaster to Karakuri's true identity completely silenced. With a single hand sign Taran calls the poison back into Salamander's jaws and Crow reassembles itself before his eyes. Ignoring the swearing of the Naginata who is loudly complaining that she missed everything he looks up into Kuromaru's mismatched eyes, softly tells the Proctor that Karakuri is unconscious and strides off to sit at Yoru's side. Giri is the one who steps into the circle to picks up Karakuri's limp body, taking care to disguise the sight of the oil-dripping shoulder wound from sight as he carries the other boy back to Hideki and Wana. All that remains in the circle is a small puddle of black oil.
Akira starts to applaud in a hopelessly optimistic kind of way. The entire fight, obscured from view since the first minute, showed nothing but the final defeat of one of his village's entrants without so much as a word being heard from the smoke. In the chilly midnight air the spectator's seemed equally chilly. The hope that some of the other battles could stir up some good, old-fashioned fighting spirit and restore some dignity to the occasion seemed unfounded but still, as the temporary leader of this village, he was trying his best. Naruto leans over once again, this time knowing better than to touch the jumpy Kemuri Nin. "You owe me two bowls of Ramen." At least the Hokage still seemed in high spirits, Akira thought gloomily as Naginata stood. "O.k.that was really booooring" the priestess announces to the crowd. "Honestly puppet guy, I expected better from you when you've got an iron maiden already to go but never mind. The next fight, and may you please Jashin better, will be..." Once again Naginata spins around and randomly points out two Genin from the crowd. "You two." With a sigh Akira once again consults his forms. "Next battle: Shizuka Keitiki vs Kurogane Murumasa. Will both contestants please enter the ring?"
As Keitiki, loudly proclaiming she was going to win, and the almost bored looking Kiri swordsman stepped into the ring Wana bent over his fallen comrade, hiding him from view as he carefully opened up the access panel once more and swiftly began to slot the panes back into their proper places. Impassively Hideki watches as, slowly, a spark of life starts to re-kindle in the mechanical puppet's eyes. He remembered little more than strange flashes of images; a horse struggling against its tether, the chunks of grey falling stone shattering around him, the sensation of falling and, high above him, a caravan moving along the mountain pass. Then there was nothing but blackness, blackness pressing all around him. There was a click and blackness became light. "His eyes look operational." A voice said. "I'm going to try and bring the rest of him online." He could move his head now to find the source of the voice and saw a face twist into a smile. "Can you hear me? You fell off a cliff so I'm not sure how much of you is still working." Tentatively he remembers how to nod and the face smiles again. It appears to have big bits of shining glass instead of eyes but he can't remember if that is normal or not. Carefully he raises his hand to his head and feels the plate of metal against his skin. "You got pretty torn up on the rocks but Hideki-sensei taught me how to fix you!" The voice says cheerfully. The man standing in the corner of the room with the blank-eyed stare and the metal arm is looking at him too. Hideki remembers the weeping child bringing in the tattered corpse of the boy dead from falling off the high mountain pass and begging the blind man to fix him. That had been some months ago. "I'm afraid some of your memory might be gone." The glass-eyed thing says as it takes his hand. "But it's o.k. because we can make some new memories together because you're all mine! Hideki-sensei says I can look after you and train you and fix you if you get broken and we're going to have so much fun together!" The memory fades in a flash of white light as the last panel clicks into place and the gears in Karakuri's repaired brain once again begin to whirr. "-eyes seem operational...Are you alright?" Wana asks him as Karakuri's ears once again begin to work and in response the mechanical puppet wraps his arms around the skinny genin's shoulders, trying to convey without words the horror of the feeling of having someone else pulling his strings.

In Kemurigakure there was a white poplar tree. It grew alone in the clearing, festooned with token of the respect the people of the entire village. The wind blew and its delicate branches shook. A single deep green leaf with an under side as soft and pale as paper broke free from its branch and spiraled through the air, landing amongst the spear-shaped leaves of the budding wildflowers. The strange pattern of the darker colored veins that ran across its underside was a message no-one could read.
Keitiki smiled with a grim determination and tossed her long, red hair dramatically. Her silk dress in the bright purple and pink colors of wildflowers swirled around her knees. Even in the strangely monochrome environment of the dirt circle bleached by the blue-white orbs she practically glowed with color, every part of her as bright and loud as her speech. Despite the midnight chill the outfit she wore still showed a flattering amount of bare skin. Her male opponent coughed embarrassedly and tried not to look. Confidently Keitiki punches the air towards her opponent, a traditional sign that she was getting fired up for the fight ahead. "Well Kemuri may have lost one match already but that's what happens when you rely on another team rather than the super-awesome and totally talented Team Firestorm!" She chatters loudly into the still, cold air and winks at the confused Kiri Swordsman. "I'm going to bring home the victory!" With a soft sigh Kurogane Murumasa slings the blade from his shoulders. It is a long sword, almost taller than he was, its steel scarred and pitted with age and its long thin blade notched like a saw from continuous crossing of other blades. It seems to radiate the aura of eons of pitched battles. With a careful and unfazed attitude Murumasa pulls a bloodied white cloth from his pack and carefully wipes it down the red-smeared and still dripping sword to clean it of blood with a soft regretful sigh of one unable to show the ancient weapon the respect it deserved due to time constraints. It is easy to see he has no enthusiasm for the fight. Effortlessly he takes the sword in a one-handed grip and levels it at Keitiki's chest. He looks embarrassed. "Sorry about this, man I really hate fighting girls." He sighs. "I just want you to know that I'm really not that bad a guy." He attempts a tentative smile. "Maybe after this fight is over we could go out for ice-cream or something, my treat?" Keitiki pouts cutely at the suggestion and the optimistic expression on the Kiri Nin's face. "Sorry but I already have a boyfriend-" "No you don't!" Sazae shouts from the sidelines, causing Keitiki to hurt around and start a vicious argument with her while Biwa stays silent and tries to avoid getting dragged into it.
On the other side of the circle Naginata gives a heartfelt groan and shoves a blade through her ear to block out of the noise of Keitiki's chattering. "I shouldn't have to endure this without a sacrifice circle." She mutters under her breath before raising her voice to the accustomed dull roar. "Just attack her already!" the Jashinist shouts at the Kiri Nin who flinches backwards and takes a tighter grip on his blade. With a faint smile flickering beneath his bandages Akira raises both arms to officially start the match.
"Sorry, again." Murumasa says dully, the harsh lights reflecting off the notched blade of the sword as he drops into a combat stance. "I promise I'll get it over with quickly." Keitiki smiles and unwraps the bandages from her arms slowly in a gesture of getting ready for battle. "I don't know, are you sure you can handle this?" She smiles, sweet as a poisoned apple, and flicks her long hair. Murumasa's face colors in embarrassment. This isn't the first time his code of chivalry is letting him down; if his opponent was male they would be face down in the dirt by now but hitting a girl just didn't seem right. He has been o.k. through the rest of the Exam because his teammates had no such compunctions. For one of the first times in his life he wonders if there was a way to end a fight without violence. Maybe if he could persuade her to surrender than the notch bladed sword wouldn't even have to touch her. "Look, I don't want to hurt you..." He starts and the rest of his sentence dies off with the flash of fire that sparks in the Kemuri Nin's eyes. "I am a ninja just the same as you are and I too am here to fight for the honor of my village. If you want to do me a favor fight me seriously and show me the same respect you would show another opponent." Keitiki snaps irritably. "Your sword won't even be able to touch me." Murumasa stutters in surprise for a bit before he regains his wits and twists the ancient sword. It flashes through the air like a bolt of lighting and slices a deep gash in the earth at Keitiki's side. A loose bit of brightly colored silk, the hem of her dress, is severed by the blades closeness to her skin. "Please surrender." Murumasa asks softly of her. Keitiki closes her eyes for a moment and whispers something softly under her breath. "I am not what I am..." Then she does something no-one has ever seen her do. She shuts up. Not only does she stop talking but as she does she discards all the gaudy little extras of her personality that drew all attention to her, that she had needed to stop her clan's Kekkai Genkai from taking effect, as it does now. Her body relaxes and suddenly the part of her that had been screaming loudly 'I am here' reverses itself. It was the Shizuka Clan's special brand of invisibility, an ability that didn't fool the eyes but the brain. Keitiki shuts up and in that moment she completely disappears.
The Hokage can't suppress a small gasp of surprise as the girl in front of him apparently disappears from sight. Inwardly Akira beams with pride. "That is the Kekkai Genkai of the legendary Shizuka Clan of Kemurigakure. Half a blessing and half a curse I suppose you could say." The hybrid explains carefully. "Children of the Shizuka Clan are born with such a great air of unremarkability that they just blend into the background, your brain processes them as slightly less important as the furniture unless they adopt mannerisms to make themselves recognized. Even with the sharingan their chakra just blends into the natural background chakra of their surroundings, or so I've been told. Even if she was standing right in front of you the sight is just shoved to your hindbrain and you don't notice her. It is a truly remarkable Kekkai Genkai. The Shizuka Clan are well known as excellent assassins."
Murumasa blinks in surprise at suddenly finding himself alone in the circle of dirt. The circle was only a few feet across and completely bare with no distinguishing features more than a small puddle of black fluid and some shallow holes in the dirt left over from the previous battle, there was nothing to take shelter behind. It was just simply one moment she was there and the next she was gone. A prickling feeling of unease puts the Kiri Swordman on his guard. Jutsu that made one invisible were entirely possible and had been around for many years but most only had short operation times, or gave away a shimmer of chakra or otherwise required vast amounts of chakra that a genin couldn't possibly muster. There was no way this was true invisibility. Murumasa fumbles at his side for a flask filled with clear water from one of the sacred alligator swamps, an artifact his clan had trusted him with along with the ancestral sword. It also had the remarkable power of not only being responsive to the touch of the Kurogane clan chakras but of revealing the chakras of others as well. "Please don't make this any harder on yourself." He says softly, keeping his sharp ears out for any sound of movement from his apparently invisible foe as he pops the stopper on the flask and calls out the water inside. It appears to follow the curves of his hand motions rather than following gravity and splashing to the ground. With one swift motion he scatters the water over the field where it splits into hundreds of airborne droplets, suspended in the air like a myriad of diamonds. They hummed with chakra, anything that touched them would register and as soon as they were in place Murumasa swept his blade around, blunt end first with a twinge of guilt. It scatters the hovering drops but does not connect with anything more solid. The Kiri Nin starts to sweat. There was this strange, vague feeling that he was being watched that raised the hairs on the back of his neck but no matter how swiftly he looked around and strained his senses until they hurt he could detect nothing but the defenses he himself had put into place and the sound of his own labored breathing. Some ancient part of his brain is picking up the danger as Keitiki slowly walks towards him, brushing the hovering droplets aside as she does so, but as he registers the movement in the tiny drops with his eyes his brain emphatically insists that his eyes are mistaken and it is just his imagination. Keitiki blinks softly, aware that to his eyes she is nothing more than just a puff of air. Even in the bright silken dress she could still become nothing. That was the true strength of the Shizuka Clan, without putting effort into being someone you were nothing at all. The Taijutsu specialist balls up her fist and draws back her arm.
Out of the corner of his eye Murumasa sees the faintest flash of purple and violet silk before the blow strikes him hard in the gut. He is doubled over, barely managing to keep the blade of his ancestors from touching the dirt before another blow smacks into his jaw. Out of some instinctual warning he can see some flash of skin in the aggressive movements but it like being able to only see the shine on the edge of a knife. Without a frame of reference he barely manages to block two of Keitiki's swift punches before a solid blow to the jaw sends him sprawling on the dirt. Before he can get up Keitiki has grabbed the lengths of bandages she had unwound from his wrists and used them to tie Murumasa's hands to his side. Suddenly there in a way she had not been before, the few fine drops of water that rested against her pale skin chiming an alarm at the feel of her chakra. She pokes out her tongue and winks again. "Chalking up a victory for Team Firestorm and don't worry, I'll remember you didn't want to hurt me." In a stunned sort of silence she flicks her hair again and flounces out of the circle. The water falls like rain.
This time Akira's applause is joined, if rather uncertainly, by a few of the other Jonin's in the audience. "Well done, Shizuka Keitiki." Akira announces cheerfully while Naruto begrudgingly awards the girl points for style. Giggling Keitiki tries to wrap her arm around Biwa's shoulders to a brief outburst of anger from Sazae on the other side as the two push and shove each other for the bandaged Nin's affections. Biwa himself doesn't seem to care at all; he ignores the two with a gaze firmly fixed elsewhere. Naruto chuckles to himself, reminded of a time that seemed so long ago. Rolling her blood-red eyes Naginata holds up a hand. "You-" The Jashinist Priestess points out the one genin she judges to have the most cruelty lurking beneath his gaze. Caught unaware and unguarded Sero immediately raises up his usual facade of the intelligent but normal genin, eager to be the one to show how much he has grown. From a wry sparkle in Naginata's eyes she is not fooled, from across the circle where he thought he was not being observed the look of contempt on the child's face could have nearly rivaled her own. "And...you." Seemingly at random Naginata selects the other genin, one from the village she dwelt in. She had no loyalty towards the Nin here beyond appreciation for their devotion during the great ceremony but still she was reluctant to throw a random child to the wolves as it were. A roughly even fight increased the chances of both opponents to leave open bloodied wounds on each other before one was torn to ribbons... Slowly the chosen combatant stepped into the circle, Sero stepping in from the other side and pretending to stumble in one area of the mounded dirt around where the puppet limbs had buried themselves as an excuse to check the blades hidden in his clothing. With blank-eyed gaze Biwa steps into the circle and unslings the great lute-like instrument from his back, holding it close against his chest and taking the white ivory plectrum in one hand. Carefully he sits cross-legged on the bare dirt, not even acknowledging he has an opponent as he twiddles the tuning knobs of the biwa and plays a brief chord by plucking each string in turn. Satisfied the instrument is tuned Biwa turns his gaze towards where Akira sat with his patchwork blanket still over his knees, waiting for the signal for the next fight to begin. "The next match: Hebiken Sero versus Gagaku Biwa will now begin!"

In Kemurigakure there was a white Poplar Tree. Its branches twisted and writhed like snakes as it was struck by a sudden, violent gust of wind. One slim twig snapped off entirely, the silver bell chiming sorrowfully as if bounced off the patch of mossy ground and rolled to a standstill. The wish inscribed on the paper tag fell, unanswered, into the dirt.
A single plucked string sends a sharp note vibrating through the air, the twang of the plaited hair mimicking the twang of tension in the air. Through the distance that separated them Sero can feel the intensity of his father’s golden gaze upon him and it makes him tighten his grip on the kunai he holds in hand. He realizes how important it is to win these battles in preparation for a far more serious fight later on. If he was beaten now, before he got to face his brother, Orochimaru might see about finding another heir to grant him the place at his side. No matter what he could not be seen to be inferior to Yoru. Still with so many eyes upon him he also could not risk using his sharingan, displaying the Uchiha Clan's thrice cursed Kekkai Genkai to the Hokage who had fought those who bore it would cause unnecessary trouble for his father. However with the training he received he was far from helpless without his dojutsu, in fact he had been taught how to fight completely blind if his sight was ever targeted. For this battle he would have to win on merits of his jutsu alone. His opponent didn't even stand to face him, taunting the Uchiha with each twang of a meaningless note on his instrument. Sero is torn between considering the apparent vulnerability of the bandaged Kemuri Nin a potential trap and thinking the hapless bard easy prey. Biwa wouldn't even make eye contact with him but whether it was nervousness or prudence was hard to judge. Sero smirks and, as soon as the battle is officially started, he leaps into action.
As soon as Biwa put plectrum to string Sero hurled a kunai towards him. The Kemuri Nin ducks his head, first to one side than the other so the blades whistle harmlessly past him, all the while picking out a rapid tune on the stringed instrument he holds in both hands. Flicking another blade into his palm, this time a straight bladed dagger like that he had used to threaten Yoru, Sero aims to close the distance between them before his opponent can finish enough of a chord to put him under a genjutsu. Unlike the sound jutsu of any of his father's subordinates the rapidly plucked tune does not distort his view with genjutsu (even without activating his sharingan he could determine if a genjutsu was beginning) nor summon any creature with its tones. In fact the high pitched jittery tone is little more than very irritating. Giving in to his anger Sero twists the dagger blade around and slices down. Biwa swiftly ducks. The silvery blade slices free a few strands of dark hair but still he keeps playing. Sero slashes again and as rapid as he tries to make the blade strike it merely cuts free the end of a trailing bandage strip. The Bard's dark eyes look up at him, any expression on his face unreadable beneath the layers of bandage over his mouth. Sero raises his blade to slice again and realizes with a dawning horror a trickle of blood has started to drip from his left ear. The ivory plectrum dances faster across the strings, the song having deeper effects than it is possible to recognize on the surface.
Touching the thin stream of red that oozes from his ear Sero leaps backwards and pulls out a long string of sharp bladed kunai held together with wire. At regular intervals along the wires are paper tags that glow at the ends and start to ignite. Carefully the Bard's bandaged fingers pick out one note in a higher scale from the rest of the tune as the blades are thrown towards him. With a cloud of flame, smoke and metallic shrapnel first one tag ignites and then the others along the string in a series of explosions that make a sound like rolling thunder. Still the irritating tune plays on and the smoke calms to show the cross-legged Kemuri Nin still in the same place in the circle with fragments of metal still around him. 'So the higher note triggers a defensive shield of some sort...the shield’s radius doesn't seem to be more than half a meter but he chose to dodge my earlier attacks.' Sero muses, analysing his opponent's strange jutsu as deeply as he could. 'The shield must use a lot of chakra...' For a few seconds he watches Biwa's fingers dance on the strings. From the other end of the circle the bleeding in his ears has slowed considerably. 'While dangerous at close quarters the purpose of that song is to irritate me, enrage me into getting close enough to be hurt by it...And with his shielding technique a range attack will turn this into a battle of stamina.' Sero decides to end this quickly and draws up the chakra inside him for a genjutsu technique.
The illusion he chooses is not one that relies on his sharingan but rather one that he has mastered through it. Focusing his chakra just behind his eyes he tries to meet the Bard's gaze but Biwa, in what would be an example of poor ninja form in anyone else, is looking down at his instrument without paying heed to his opponent at all. Sero grinds his teeth. Even if it wasn't as harmful the song was certainly irritating. "You think you're such a big shot don't you?" Sero calls out mockingly. "Hiding behind a toy like that." His taunt works and Biwa raises his head swiftly in anger. "The Biwa is not...a...toy..." His sharp tone trails off as his black eyes meet Sero's. With a strange flicker the fight seems to leave Biwa's body and his dark eyes dilate as he finds himself immediately drawn into Sero's genjutsu. 'Checkmate.' Sero thinks triumphantly as he draws another dagger. Operating more on muscle movement than anything else as his mind is drawn in by his opponent's genjutsu Biwa's playing slows down, the tune dying away as the plectrum plucks listlessly at a few strings more and more slowly until his arm finally falls still.
Sero reverses his dagger into a stabbing grip as the song is silenced and he darts forwards to bring the blade down on the musician's precious instrument. It is the shock of that rather than the impeding threat to himself that snaps Biwa out of his genjutsu stupor. Swiftly one bandaged hand flicks up and grips Sero's wrist. With a smirk Sero flicks his wrist a fraction and lets go of the dagger. Biwa swiftly pulls his instrument out of the way and the metal blade instead sinks into his thigh. He winces and tries to toss Sero aside. The pretend Konoha Genin breaks out of the one-handed throw easily, landing back on his feet and the edge of the circle. Biwa is desperately trying to keep him at a distance. 'How sad...' Sero thinks as he draws yet another knife. This one gleams oily with a poisoned edge. 'In a different arena he might have even been a fun opponent' As if recognizing his opponent's thoughts Biwa's playing suddenly changes tune. The bleeding of his ears stops entirely as does Sero's irritation. The swift Uchiha charges towards him once again, this time more slowly than before as if mocking his opponent's inability to adequately defend himself. The large wound in the Kemuri nin's thigh leaks red blood onto the bare earth as he grips his plectrum firmly and gets serious. The song he plays would be considered a forbidden jutsu in any other village. Even at midnight the first few notes of it seem to make the light blue lit circle darker and colder. Sero tosses his dagger straight at the Bard's hands but it never reaches them. A few feet in front of Biwa it meets some sort of strange disturbance in the air, the metal blade becoming pulled and strangely elongated as it twists into a spiral and disappears into the strange black singularity that hovers over the battlefield. "Paradichlorobenzene..." Biwa mutters under his breath with a smile.
At the Hokage's side Akira tenses against his chair, his human nails inadvertedly digging into the varnished wood. "Nervous?" Konohagakure's leader says wearily. Even beneath his black sunglasses Akira looks tense. "Bards are strange people. The...summons that rely on them, well, they are just..." Unable to find the words to adequately describe it Akira waves his arms in the air. "Strange?" Naruto suggests, taking a sip of his fresh bowl of Ramen. "A lot of Bards are in a dark, dark place to communicate with them." Akira mutters under his breath as he takes a sip of his fresh thermos of hot chocolate. The Broodling that had been sent up with it from the tunnels shivers in the cold and curls up close to her father for warmth.
The strange disturbance in the air splits open before Sero can draw another dagger. Driven on by the new tune Biwa is determinedly playing something emerges from it. The closest thing it could be likened to is branching lines that look like they have been scribbled on the fabric of reality with red crayon. With some horrible feeling of attention the strangely unreal lines scribble themselves closer to Sero, branching and spreading out into a growing net of the strange redness. The air seems to bend around them as Sero tries to parry one darting line with his dagger. As the metal edge meets the strange redness and starts to distort. The blade is drawn forwards into the fuzzy edge of distorted air that hangs around the red strip and is drawn towards it. Sero manages to let go of the dagger just as the strange force yanks the blade from his grasp. The dagger twists fluidly into a strange silvery spiral of metal that dissolves into the line of red, twisting unnaturally into a spiral of metal that seems to be moving further and further off into the distance without moving. A sharp note is struck on the biwa and the lines dart forwards with an unprecedented speed as they curl up and fracture into branches.
Sero takes a step backwards, feeling his foot brush the line in the dirt and formed the hand signs for a jutsu. Fire Style: Fire ball jutsu Inhaling and building up chakra inside him he ignites the breath as he exhales into a burning fireball of impressive size. As soon as it touches the lines the same thing happened to it as happened to his daggers; the entire ball of flame distorts and is sucked away in a twisted spiral of flames that burns brightly as it is dragged away but does no harm to the thing that seems to have no flesh to burn. Still frantically playing a disturbing tune the biwa's music seems to echo from everywhere, less of controlling the red lines attack than merely accompanying it. Sero tries to form hand signs for another jutsu and finds the red lines scribbling themselves up beside him in a strangely jagged mockery of life that twines in ways reminiscent of a hand if the flesh and bone was stripped away to leave nothing more than a net of veins. As a sudden note is struck the lines lengthen all at once, scribbling their bloody red way through reality with the speed of a striking snake to wrap their branches around Sero's legs and arms, a line of red following the curve of his spine as it lashes around and into him. Sero is being torn apart, feeling each arm and leg being unstoppably pulled in opposite directions and lengthening as they begin, unstoppably, to bend into spirals that are being dragged further and further apart. His body is being twisted entirely out of shape as it is stretched in opposite directions, his entire form beginning to twist into unnatural curves. He screams and even his scream begins to spiral around him.
Sparks of red ignite in his eyes and Sero is returned to the circle of dirt with Biwa still in front of him, the bard's eyes closed as he plucks out his rapid genjutsu song. Still seeing the faintest hints of red lines passing across his vision as the carefully calibrated notes cause fearful hallucinations as they are registered by the ear, Sero's never very large supply of patience is entirely used up. He has another four daggers concealed on his person, not counting those he has haphazardly flung in his imagined battle but draws none. Instead he charges straight towards the Bard. Biwa misses a note in surprise that someone had managed to break the illusion of the Spiralling Path and the last few traces of the red lines fade from Sero's sight. The ivory plectrum plucks at strings with a redoubled urgency, the discordant unpleasant tune that bursts forth from the instrument at a pitch barely audible by humans. Sero feels his knees start to fall from under him as the Bard's song sends his leg muscles into spasms but his anger drives him on the last few steps to send his balled up fist firmly into Biwa's bandaged jaw. The Bard is roughly toppled from his sitting position, his ivory plectrum flying from his fingers. It seems to hang in mid-air for a moment as the startled Kemuri Nin is firmly tackled to the ground, his bandaged limbs pinned by Sero's Taijutsu. His precious instrument is brutally torn from his bandaged fingers and tossed aside. The seasoned wood bounces hollowly on the ground before it rocks to a halt beside the fallen plectrum. Sero drives another punch into the now defenceless Bard's face with a savage glee, knowing the battle is technically now over but enjoying paying the Kemuri Nin back for his little tricks.
Akira sits up straighter, the multicoloured patchwork blanket slipping across his legs, as he tries to announce the end of the fight in another disappointing defeat for Kemuri. Naruto, looking far from proud at the behaviour the Genin from his Village is displaying, merely sighs. The child is not one he has seen much of, despite his best efforts to communicate with the people of his village. While a lot of the changes had been positive, the scum of some old-fashioned but long established traditions had started to float to the surface. The Hyuuga Clan in particular was still giving him trouble, knowing how busy he was stopped him from actively confronting them on many issues. While the Will of Fire lived on there wasn't a spark of it in this year’s Konoha entrants and he knew it... "And the winner of the match of Hebiken Sero vs Gagaku Biwa..." Akira starts to announce from afar. Sero leans in close to the Kemuri Nin, the Bard's dark eye staring up at him from the small gap in the bandages. Whatever fight had been in him had been lost with his biwa. Even now his hungry gaze was drawn towards the fallen instrument where it lay with dirt obscuring the pretty patterns inlaid on it. In Sero's hand shone a straight bladed dagger, a swift swipe and he could have cut his opponent's throat and yet there was no fear in his gaze. Sero's experiences caused by the bard's curiously powerful tunes have unhinged him, scratched the calm mask he projected to reveal the angry hell inside him. He deserved to be feared! Naginata leans closer, crossing her fingers behind her back in hopes of blood. Sero's voice drops into a low poisonous whisper than only he and his prisoner could possibly hear clearly. "Let's see what you look like then..." Biwa's eye doesn't even have time to widen in shock before Sero slashes the dagger blade across the layers of bandage that cover his face. The split cloth slides free as the Kemuri nin tries to lift up his arms and cover himself from sight. Sero grabs his hands and is surprised to see, amongst the ragged ends of split bandage, a face he recognizes from the history books. The shock is enough for him to let go of the bard's hands and allow him to cover his face as the Kemuri Nin starts to scream.
"I didn't even nick you." Sero snorts derisively, deciding the clone takes nothing after the original if he overreacts in such a way. The sound of splintering wood alerts him to the fact that the leader of Kemuri has shattered his chair as his insect claw grips too tight around it. Through the black lenses glasses his expression was impossible to tell but the eyes of every Kemuri Nin fix on him with a look of mingled disgust and horror, not just the eyes of the genin's but every Kemuri Nin present. Biwa's screaming becomes mingled with desperate sobs of terror as he struggles to cover his face from the audience, tears showing through his tightly laced fingers. He makes to attempt to stand or recover his instrument as he simply cries out loud in the horror of what has happened to him. Sero takes a step away from Biwa and the eyes follow him with a searing hatred in their gaze. Simultaneously a stirring comes over all of the Kemuri Genin's. Even the not fully functional Karakuri puts aside his strange jealousy of the bard to go to his aid with the rest of the genins. The battle is not officially over as all the Kemuri Nin swiftly come to Biwa's aid. Not one of them so much as looks in Biwa's direction as hide him from view as they kneel in a circle around him, respectfully showing their backs as they offer what gestures of comfort they can to the sobbing bard. Even cheerful Keitiki's eyes are hardened by an immense hate as all the Kemuri genins watch Sero with equal hatred in Sazae's brown eyes as there is in Giri's light pink ones. 'You will pay.' their gaze says without speaking. 'We will make you pay.' Made uncomfortable by the prickling sensation of so many eyes upon him Sero silently returns to his 'sensei's' side and tries in vain to hide behind the black-haired jonin without looking like he's hiding. A pale hand rests on his shoulder and squeezes it. Even though Orochimaru's stolen face gives away nothing of his true emotions Sero feels that somehow his father is disappointed in his actions. But what exactly had he done that was so bad?
Akira's entire body shakes as the pointed shapes of the curse mark crawl over his body and he grits his human teeth tightly. Second by second he has to fight the dark roaring voice of the beast inside of him. His claw shatters his seat in his anger as Akira forces himself not to leap into the circle and tear the cocky little b*****d into bloody bite sized pieces. His long tail twitches with desire to sting and see the child fall with foam oozing from his lips as the venom drove him to insanity. In an emotional fugue the Kemuri Nin twists as he tries to temper his rage with logic, tearing apart and eating a genin of another village was bad diplomacy. "Hold me back." He growls through his teeth at his offspring and in their fear they rush to obey as their father fights internally for control. His scorpion claw opens and shuts with desire for its sharp points to dig into something, his tail twitches spasmodically as if stinging an invisible adversary before him. His two children, while in possession of formidable physique of their own, struggle to restrain him with their coils as Akira swears in the high pitched chattering of a desert scorpion and tries to lunge forwards. Letting his anger out in a display of bestiality he tries swiftly and soon stops struggling to break free as the twining marks of the curse mark retreat back across his skin and he regains control of himself. Slumping backwards into his broken chair Akira exhales and waves aside the Hokage's concern for his brief but violent outburst. "I need to have a little talk with that genin." Without waiting for the Hokage's permission Akira stands, the multicoloured patchwork blanket lying abandoned on the floor as he sets off across the grassy verge. The bard, his face re-bandaged but still a shaken hollow shell of the boy who had stepped foot in the circle moments before, is carefully led by Wana and Giri back into the darkened trees, the darkness soothing his wounds as he is led towards a healer...
Strangely familiar golden eyes fix on the Scorpion Man as he approaches and a trickle of fear runs down the Kemuri Nin's back, further diluting his rage. Akira's original plans to simply drag away Hebiken Sero for a private conversation wither and die in the face of the golden eyed glare. "May I please borrow Sero for a moment?" The future Kemurikage asks with a sudden politeness as his curled tail lowers itself in a gesture of servility. Though he has no idea why the Konoha Jonin intimidates him so the curse mark still raised and pulsating on his shoulder recognizes the chakra of the one who had placed in there and sends the appropriate thoughts of fear and obedience through his body. The Jonin nods consent and roughly shoves Sero forwards as the bandaged Kemuri Nin leads the younger boy away from the hateful eyes of the Kemuri Genins to where they can talk privately. Sero struggles to keep a sneer off his face at one of his father's failed experiments (he had noticed the distinctive markings crawling over the Kemuri nin when he had lost his temper) acting like he had any authority over Orochimaru's heir. "Tell me...what do you know of the bards?" Akira asks with a tone of false casualness. Sero shrugs dismissively. "They're wussy clones with powerful justu? Sorry your genin lost the fight Kemurikage-sama but it was a fair battle and I was just the better fighter." Akira sighs at the boy's arrogant ignorance. "Revealing a Bard's identity by force, as you have just done, is counted in Kemurigakure as an act of Aggravated Sexual Assault." He tells Sero bluntly, his voice losing its cheery cast. "Being an outsider you are diplomatically immune from punishment on the grounds of Ignorance of Kemuri's Customs but I'll tell you this for free, if you were affiliated with any village less powerful that Konoha I would tear you apart right now." His voice a low menacing hiss Akira's scorpion claw snaps shut beside Sero's face, its inside surface covered in curled spikes the size of tiger's teeth. "From now on every single entrant Kemuri has in this exam will try to kill you and some of them won't even bother to make it look like an accident. They will hunt you out for the pleasure of revenging themselves on you and no matter where you hide you will never be safe from them, hell, if they catch you alive they probably won't even kill you on the spot but afford you the agonies of the Festival of Blood like no outsider has felt for generations because you, stupid vain child, just publically raped one of their number in front of the representatives of every ninja village in existence. If you stay in this exam they will kill you." Akira tells him in a malevolent rapid whisper as he leans closer in towards Sero, the boy's face a tiny reflection in his obsidian black glasses, tail arching over his back with beads of pearly venom dripping from its needle-like point. He looms in the strange light, looking more than willing and capable of following through on his earlier threat. Under the pale blue orb lights Sero's face looks markedly more pale than usual as he swallows dryly. Leading him back towards the circle of dirt Akira straightens up, his voice once again bearing a bitter tone of mock cheer as he shoves Sero back at his sensei's side. "Good talking to you."
Naginata's hand trembles with rage as she grips one her black blades so firmly it cuts straight through her palm to ooze red over its tip. Kuromaru, a similar anger in his emerald coloured eye, watches her closely for any signs of sudden violence. In the Jashinist Preistess's other hand she tightly clutches her rosary of dark bloody red beads, each made from the concentrated fluids of a particularly worthy opponent and raises the sign of her religion, the circle and inverted triangle, towards her forehead. Lust was a sin. It was a great sin that required cleansing from the body to understand the true meanings of pain. Such violent lust was not the way of Jashin, it bore no divine purity of true devotion but the animal taint of petty desires. Those unclean ones required a lot more cleansing than purer souls but after such a display Naginata's impulse is not to attack the child with the sharp blades so close at hand but to give him a greater punishment in staying her hand, just this once. Such a person who would reveal a bard's face in such a manner was unworthy of the mercy of a Jashinist blade. His blood would be unclean, the promising look of violence in his eyes a mere mockery in a brutish soul without higher concerns. Bards were of a cruder and less pure sect than she was but they obeyed certain tenants of Jashinist Commandments to such a level Naginata encouraged their eventual growth into her circle of disciples, they partook in no mortal sins and suffered only the weakness of attachment to their bloodied music. Abuse to one enrages her. The child would suffer, yes, he would suffer to be raised up. There but for the grace of Jashin, go I...Naginata thinks sorrowfully and without enthusiasm picks out the next two contestants. Hopefully they will bring some redemption. Moodily returning to his seat Akira makes the announcement. "Next match: Yoru vs Kotori."

In Kemurigakure there was a white poplar tree. The silver bells chime in time to the soft stroking of a night breeze as the paper tags flutter like the wings of pale moths with the dark ink of their words blending into the inky night. Only the faintest glimmer of weirlight reached them and tinged the curling paper faint blue.
Akira stays quiet for a long time, an icy air of disapproval hovering over him like some large depressing cloud. His insect eyes, black orbs that reflect a shattered compound image and hidden behind the obsidian lenses of the black glasses, are cold with suppressed rage. What he had told the pale brat was true, if he had been affiliated with any village other than Konohagakure it would have been taken as grounds for the declaration of an all out war. As it was Kaze had a certain…affection for Konohagakure ever since he became capable of claiming half of it to cover the previous Hokage's gambling debts, there was too much of a history between the two for these events to be anything more than a black mark on a page. Besides the Hokage, he was nice enough. He remembered the blond child back when he was still a hyperactive boy frustrated by being unable to defeat Hiroshi in combat, with the problems he was having with the more unbending members of his village there was no need to put more troubles on the boy's back.
The child would pay; even if in the arrogance of his supposed 'genius' he thought he has invulnerable. Kemuri was a dangerous enemy to make. His human hand drummed across the arm of the chair he hasn't shattered with his rage. It’s a little nervous tick from back when he had a lot more to be nervous about. Mentally he swears as soon as this is over he is going to hug his kids as tightly as he can, even if it will take a while to finish. In the pale blue shadows of the weirlights he starts by beckoning over his bodyguard, the Broodling blinking his golden eyes as the cool night air makes him sleepy, and wraps his arms around the hybrid's shoulders in a sign of appreciation.
Yoru's hand brushes Taran's fingers as he stands, not quite holding it but trying to give some sort of reassurance. The Uchiha's eyes are cold and hard. Unlike his brother he doesn't bother sheathing his sharingan. He had been completely honest in front of the Suna Nin who had taken him in, including his unlikely lineage. Even so out of the corner of his eye he spots the Hokage shift in his seat at the sight of the redness of his eyes. The Uchiha Clan had come close to extermination, the few surviving dregs taking out the misfortune caused by their cursed bloodline on the world, and the Hokage had been the one to fight them. Seeing the sharingan again was probably unnerving. Yoru focuses fully on his opponent, a poisonous little thing his brother was fond of. Dancing in his mind's eye is the image of the poisoned blades he had pulled from Arashi's corpse before it had been taken away by the Yeti children. They were weapons all the crueller for their blunt efficiency. The red-head pushes her glasses up her nose, a gesture that no doubt carries a dual purpose. Always a one for hidden weapons was his brother's servant.
On the other hand Yoru is carrying only a few visible weapons, a short sword, a kunai pouch and a few smoke bombs. He had never bothered with poisons or extra weapons. They lacked honour, Kimimaro had taught him better than to rely on such tricks that always had a habit of letting down the user when they were most needed. His blade was a simple length of sharp steel, a sword without a name. If it ever became necessary he would use his bones as the blades he needed. Kimimaro himself had taught Yoru how to use the blades of bone, giving him an advantage over his brother in that way. With care he sizes up the girl in front of him. No battle with any of Sero's servants would be easy but in the end his victory was assured. If she defeated him Sero would kill her himself for the perceived insult to his own strength. The only one allowed to best Yoru in combat was Sero. Solemnly Yoru stepped over the line drawn in the dirt to inside the circle.
His red eyes are hard as cut rubies as he thinks of what his brother has done. Though many of Kemuri's customs, relics of long dead empires, were strange to him there was no doubt what Sero has done is something truly vile. Admittedly there was some curiosity as to what lay beyond any mask but the way that boy had screamed... Now the Kemuri nin were united against his brother, the arguments of the fallen Bard's teammates silenced by the hate in their eyes.
Yoru liked Kemuri and knew of their value as allies. He must prove he was not like his brother. Even now he felt their eyes on his back, mentally wondering whether they want Sero's brother or his teammate to suffer for what he has done. The Uchiha draws his short sword, the sliver of blade gleaming brightly under the flickering blue lights. The girl Kotori is starting to remind him of a preying mantis, all spiny limbs ready to strike. She has the same prickly expression. Her hair is nicely coiled up in elaborate braids held pinned in place with rather attractive hairpins. They would be poisoned no doubt, just as her mind has been poisoned by his brother. Though he doubted she would use something fatal on him a milder poison that would leave him screaming and vomiting for hours was the kind of humiliating defeat Sero loved to see him suffer.
Revenge is partially his motive, not just for the practical reason of trying to regain the favour of a potential future ally and preventing the actions of his brother from reflecting back on his father’s village but for the memory of Arashi held in orange-furred arms and the needles stuck like porcupine quills in her. She had died simply for Sero’s amusement, because he wanted to make things personal and incite his more emotional brother into such a rage he would make mistakes. It is true he was angered and, from the sudden coldness that had swept over Taran, the puppet master was too.
This battle would have to be ended swiftly.
Yoru darts forwards, sliver of ice cold steel slipping round in his grasp so it is the blunt edge not the sharp that slices through the air. Kotori ducks under the blade with no waste of motion and swings her foot into his waist. Yoru is caught off balance and the blow misses by a fair margin as the blade sinks firmly into the soil. A senbon-like hairpin with a poisoned tip is pulled from Sero’s servant’s coiled hair. Following Yoru’s own thought patterns it is tipped with only a milder poison, one designed to cause terrible pain but not quite death. Yoru plants one hand on the earth and tugs at the sword blade with the other, sending himself backwards before the bright needle can slash his skin.
“You can’t win.” He says in a tone so soft only his opponent can hear. “He would never forgive you.” Psychological warfare was never his forte but his soft words cause a tiny twitch at the corner of her mouth as with what seemed like a simple and crude gesture of retaliation she tries to scratch him with her fingernails. The nails with their poisonous purple tips break skin but break on the film of hard bone Yoru has formed directly under his skin and the scratch is too shallow to poison him. Yoru smirks. "Give up." He whispers softly before leaping backwards further, dirty sword blade still clutched in hand.
He almost sees the dark thoughts buzzing in her head as her dark eyes fix on him. Yoru can't understand what has motivated this girl into attaching herself to Sero. She is plain enough, no spectacular exotic beauty and her performance showed promise but not genius. Her devotion was the only extrodinary factor, her loyalty being one of the few things Sero would not question and no doubt there was intelligence in her dark gaze. Her gaze seems almost vindictive, after the embarrassment of the previous fight she wants to make it up to Sero by causing him no small amount of pain.
The weirlights illuminate the light blue blade, making the length of faintly wavy steel look like it is glowing from within. Yoru's eyes flash red but surprisingly the girl does not flinch back at the threat of being sealed away in an Uchiha genjutsu, instead she meets his gaze with a barely concealed loathing that makes disturbing shivers run down Yoru's spine. He holds the sword blade up, the gesture perversely mirrored by the way his opponent raises the sharp point of the hairpin. The short length of steel also shines blue with the reflected weirlights apart from the faintly cloudy yellow colouring on the very tip. The hairpin is tipped with a shining blue jewel; a gift from Sero. Sero always liked that kind of stone. Thickening the layer of bone just beneath his skin Yoru darts forwards once again. The hairpin's point plunges into his shoulder as the elder brother relies on something unexpected and tries to tackle the fiery red-head to the ground. His arms wrap around Kotori's waist, slamming her into the ground. The hairpin bounces once and breaks the sharp tip, steel shattering into bright splinters. Her pale fingers reach up for another hairpin as her eyes flash with anger. Her coiled and braided hair is loosened and starting to frizz. It resembles a nest of bright red vipers.
A faint shadow of a figure materializes across the circle. One second there is only the hostile gazes of Keitiki and Sazae, the next there is a familiar figure standing behind them, one only she can see. Kotori's eyes widen a fraction at the improbable sight of the Suna nin. A wide and mischievous grin stretches over the girl's face, the oozing puncture wounds of the senbon wounds mysteriously healed over. She waves jauntily to the trapped girl who is still looking at her with an incredible look of disbelief and from the edge of the circle she steps forwards, between the two Kemuri nin to get a closer view. With an impish smile still clear on her face she kneels at the circle's rough dirt edge to look straight at Kotori. "Don't keep us waiting..." the dead girl says with a malicious smile. The chill of someone walking over her grave runs down Kotori's spine as her fingers halt on the way towards the pin. Is this some genjutsu? She's always been resistant to the illusions of others, always been the best at determining the falseness in them but everything seemed so real...apart from the fact that Arashi who she had killed with her own two hands was sitting there and looking down on her.
Yoru cannot see the phantom of his dead teammate, aside from Kotori the only one that even notices so much of a hint of movement from across the circle is Giri whose pale pink eyes saw more than he would let on; His only reaction was a flicker of a smile playing across the corner of his mouth, something that could be mistaken for a trick of the weirlight. Instead the older Uchiha brother takes the opportunity to drive the final blow home before the layer of bone under his skin can be pierced or his opponent wriggles free enough to turn this into a battle of ninjutsu. He balls up his fist and subconsciously charges the blow with the strength of his expertly concealed anger as he drives a punch straight into his opponent's head. Kotori doesn't have time to react to the threat beyond taking grip on the hairpin before the blow is smacked straight into her skull. Yoru has timed the blow correctly, unconsciousness is immediate. The red-haired girl slumps. A deep purple bruise is already starting to form on her head as Yoru frees himself to pant at the brief burst of exertion. His bone armour has taken a lot of chakra to maintain but, as he goes back to sit by Taran who has lost some of his air of anger after seeing Kotori get punched in the face, Yoru can't help but feel it was worth it as he examines the few tiny scratches he has acquired. Some he hadn't even noticed at the time. Without his preparations he would have been poisoned for sure.
Sero is still in the company of his father who is no doubt giving his younger brother a severe telling off. Yoru tries not to smile too widely at the thought. Rifuto, Sero's blank faced puppet, merely waits still with his legs folded neatly as he awaits orders from his master. It takes a few awkward moments after the ending of the battle for Sero to return and remove Kotori from the circle. Though he keeps his face an emotionless mask Yoru can tell that secretly he is pleased with her performance. After all the great battle between them was the reason for their existence. Everything one brother did had to be matched or bettered by the other but everything boiled down to the one on one conflict. Having a servant attack your rival was something so dishonourable that even Sero wouldn't attempt it...although Yoru was starting to have doubts about Sero's level of morals.
Akira listlessly announces the winner of the battle, even in the strange light he can see across the circle Naginata losing any hope she can get the genins to slaughter each other and is sawing away at her wrists with one of the blades formerly stuck through her. Kuromaru on the other hand is a picture of shinobi efficiency, his pale Hyuuga eye surrounded by the engorged veins that facilitated his greatly increased vision. The Kaguya was from a time of more violent warfare than any of the jonin ranked nin that watched the spectacle with open disdain, the pale skinned man used to staying standing for hours while he scouted for dangers. There is a variety of expressions on the faces of the waiting jonins. Many are still solemn and mourning silently, some more brash ones seem curious as to why such a big deal was made over the screaming Bard and others, more openly fed up with the proceedings, have realized there are still three more fights to sit through before they are permitted to leave.
With his broodling son, a creature far younger than he looks, curled up sleepily in his arms and around his chair Akira looks over the circle. Things have not gone as planned in any sense... The Jashinist priestess once again randomly picks two out of the diminishing pool of remaining contestants. Soon her not very fluid memory will be struggling to recall who she hasn't picked but for now she singles out the two remaining girls as the next pair to take to the circle. Sazae who has been sitting next to Keitiki, the pair entirely silent after Biwa has been taken away, calmly stands as on the other side of the circle the female Kiri Nin does the same. "Do your best." Giri loudly says to both the contestants as they square up.

In Kemurigakure there was a white poplar tree, its slender branches extending upwards to the rising sun as the faintest breeze rattles the delicate twigs high in the tree’s top. A silver bell tinkled once and then fell still, the white paper of its prayer falling still against the papery white leaves.
She scuffed the uneven line gouged into the dry earth as she stepped over it, her ebony coloured eyes fixed on her opponent rather than the area they were to battle in. Immediately she regretted it, feeling that blurring the boundaries of their battle may have some unforeseen effect. A metallic taste lingered at the back of her throat, feelings of disgust and hatred after seeing her teammate’s treatment still poisoning her blood. Even in battle against the Mizu Nin, a team that had proven to be competent enemies, she couldn’t drag her thoughts from the look of horror on Biwa’s face. The Bard was catatonic now, his face roughly rebound in bandages that did as much to heal his true injury as putting a band-aid on a stab wound. It was best that he had some sleep. Inwardly she dwells on the depths of skill her other teammate has displayed with equal amounts of jealousy and surprise. Had she never mentioned her clan name before? Sazae can’t recall and feels embarrassed. For all the talking she had done she had never really learnt anything about Sazae. That feeling then gave way to determination as her opponent entered the circle and took a defensive stance. She could not be the one that lost here. The honour of their village was too important. Akira stands to announce the next fight. She is second to last and after the fights that have gone before hers is unlikely to be remembered. Compared to the others who had tried to take leadership of the village he seems jittery and unstable, his animal display of anger at the treatment of one of his students a terrifying sign of what kind of power Kemuri housed. As a citizen Sazae knew that he hadn’t been the first choice to lead the village, merely instated as a place holder until proper negotiations were done but privately she thought he was doing a better job of it than any of the candidates she had seen. Underneath the protective covering of bandages she flexes her fingers in preparation for the start signal. It was kind of ironic that the Hokage be here, her battle techniques were based around that of another well-known Konohagakure Hokage.
The Mist Genin has a serene calmness about her, an air that all the Mist candidates had possessed that suggested that the upcoming battle was going to be as much entertainment as serious business. The one girl in the group of three was slimmer than her comrades and shorter. She defiantly did not have the build of a Taijutsu fighter, unlike Sazae but there seemed to be no weapons beside the standard hidden in her blue flowing robe. Her long hair was as dark as Sazae’s and her skin paler, giving her the appearance of a drowned spirit.
The Kemuri Kunoichi smacks one bandages fist into her palm in a sign of readiness, taking a position that meant her weight was off her feet for swift movement. “Ready…Begin!” Akira announces and Sazae touches her fingertips to the black seals inked on the underside of her bandages, summoning a row of shuriken. Hagoromo rapidly forms hand signs for a water style technique, looking down as opposed to at her opponent. Feinting to the right Sazae hurls the metal stars straight at her opponent but instead of blocking the Mist Nin ducks under the barrage, leaving the shuriken to hiss harmlessly out of the circle and continues swiftly forming her hand signs. Sazae abandons her usual weapons for close combat, not wanting to find out what jutsu required so many hand signs. Her chakra grows inside her as she focuses the flow of the shimmering energy, concentrating it in her fist as she draws back to punch. The final hand sign is formed and every drop of spare moisture in the circle is drawn forward by the Water Style technique to protect Hagoromo. Extending a few inches out from her material body a whirling vortex of swiftly rushing water surrounds the shape of her body in a shield of swiftly flowing current.
Tiny droplets fly, gleaming like diamonds in the air as Sazae’s punch hits, even the chakra enhanced blow unable to knock more than a few drops from the rapidly moving water defence. In mid-flight the droplets are drawn back towards the shield as if by magnetic attraction. The rushing water is moving too swiftly to be disturbed for long and its constant motion makes it difficult to hit. The layer Sazae has managed to penetrate covers a swifter moving undercurrent in the jutsu, visible for only a fraction of a second before it is repaired. The fast moving flow shreds the bandages from her knuckles and starts to remove skin before Sazae manages to withdraw her hand. The shield of rushing water condenses down from its full body covering, allowing Hagormo to see as she manipulates the cocoon of water into three crescent shaped blades of flow that hover around her. Sazae swears under her breath in a language most would be surprised to know she knew and clutches her wounded fist to her chest. A few droplets of blood ooze from her knuckles to the ground as she flings another handful of shuriken. The swift blades of water dart up to meet them, the cleanly severed halves falling around Hagoromo as she steps forwards towards Sazae. Sazae backs away, trying to find a prime position to strategize and one the crescent blades uncoils and gouges a line in the dirt at her feet.
Determinedly Sazae charges forwards, moving swiftly to avoid the darting whips of water and moving around the circumference of the dirt circle as she tries to strategize. From the signs on the underside of her bandages she summons an explosive, the lit fuse already stuttering into life and tosses it straight for the Kiri Nin’s face. One blade of water is already darting up when the explosive detonates into a wide cloud of fire and black smoke. The blade spreads out to contain the threat, changing from a tight line of near ice to a thinner and slower moving shield to absorb the blast. The heat is killed but Sazae can see some of the smoke has penetrated. So that is her opening. “So that’s your skill, controlling water like that?” She says conversationally as she makes her final attack plan. “That’s pretty special.” “It is my Kekkai Genkai.” Hagoromo says with a soft smile. Sazae isn’t fooled, the robe of water will shred flesh that comes close enough to touch it and the reserves of chakra needed to control the technique must be enormous. Sazae grips the knot of her bandages, ready to uncurl them from her arms. People though she wore them in mimicry of the bard… “I’m pretty special too.”
Simultaneously she pulls off the bandages and charges forwards, building up her chakra in both fists as she darts towards Hagoromo. Her bandages unravel behind her, streaming like white ribbons.
With first her right she punches at the shield of water, sending a faint mist like spray of droplets airborne as she pummels a dent into the barrier. The first crescent shield breaks and Hagoromo immediately sends the other two up to fill in the gap in her defences in the cocoon of water. The cloth continues to unwind behind her.
“I am Sazae.” She says, teeth gritted with determination. A powerful blow with her right hand breaks through the barrier of whirring water than would shred human flesh and she forces her fingers into the gap. The fast flowing water is like a power sander on her skin. Instead of pale skin that hand is covered in tiny interlocking plates of caramel brown shell. “My father is Hoseki, my grandfather is Akira and I..know…how to control it!” A clear fluid oozes from the insect fist as the bandages fall away completely. With a pulse she sends her chakra into the caramel coloured plates and gets them to grow into long spines like the . Sazae punches hard, missing Hagoromo but grazing her cheek with the long spines that grow along the curves of her arm, making it look like a turban shell. Focusing her ancestral powers she forces the armour of her arm to grow into the breach, the brown plates twisting around each other to resist the flowing force of the water and shatter the shield into a rainbow spray of mist. Sazae sways on her feet, too drained of chakra to strike the final blow. She gulps down air, trying to keep her concentration as Hagoromo stands and draws a kunai.
The poison of injected through the half Broodling’s spines takes effect at the same time the exhaustion takes its toll and the two collapse within a second of each other. The battle is ultimately declared a draw.

In Kemurigakure there was a white Poplar Tree, stretching its branches out in a spreading tangle towards the faint glow of the rising sun. A few bells chimed lightly as the breeze stroked along the canopy and flicked over the paper tag of a wish. The rounded curves of each stroke of a young boy’s handwriting have been faded by the light of the sun to faint grey lines against the worn paper. For a while the wish flutters loosely like an overturned leaf before the next breath of wind flips it back over. The breeze dies down again.
The Jashinist High Priestess pouts, pursing her plump blood-red lips in a way that makes several nearby observer’s blood run cold. Her equally red eyes shift across the circle. The idiotic rules forced on her by these sort of gatherings make a mockery of her beliefs and, as her interest had faded, it was getting harder to remember which of these brats still had to disappoint her.
Her eyes fall on the equally pale son of Kaze the Prophet, his posture and shock of white hair making him resemble a shrunken version of his father.
Naginata points to the remaining Kiri Genin, a boy with sharpened teeth who is positively oozing with desire to fight. He holds his blade at his side with utter pride and a smear of blood that is not his marks the edge of the sheath.
“You. You’re fighting the albino kid.” She says in a bored drawl, making shoo-ing motions with her hands towards the dirt circle. “Come on, go, go, go.” She has to pause to stifle a yawn with her bloodied palm. The sun was nearly up and she’d been sitting here all night…
“Ken Giri versus Harasume Ryuuga.” The part scorpion man announces in a clear voice and the Priestess smirks at seeing one of his unnatural mutant spawn has curled up and gone to sleep in the Lab Reject’s lap.
“Fight a good fight or whatever.” Naginata announces with evident boredom as she leans back and starts cleaning under her fingernails with one of the bloodied black spines she had previously impaled through her torso.
A breeze ruffles the albino’s hair and he blinks his soft pink eyes calmly. His hand tightens around the cloth-wrapped handle of the Luminosity katana, feeling the soft hum of power reverberate in the sword’s blade.
Wana looks up at him from behind the round lenses of his glasses, his dark eyes deadly serious. The albino acknowledges the silent words that pass between them with a small nod of his head. His distaste for the team’s official leader has dissolved with seeing his care for both Karakuri and Biwa.
Though he keeps his face a ninja’s careful blank inwardly Giri can feel his heart beating in his throat. He doesn’t need to turn around to see there is a predatory grin forming on the false Konoha Jonin’s face.
Akira thought his charge was so eager to become a Chunin simply because he wanted to be a bigger part of his father’s village.
Only Hideki knew the truth of the deal between Giri and the revived ruler of Otogakure; if Giri demonstrated he was powerful enough to obtain the rank of Chunin he would be permitted to date Doku.
The heartbeat of the living star pulsates through the hilt of the katana as the creature inside the metal blade curls its tentacles of light, gathering and consuming the darkness inside its sheath.
Giri steps over the rough drawn boundary of the dirt circle and feints embarrassment in front of his genteel opponent. He is one of the Kiri Genins with whom he had discussed swords techniques in the previous exam.
A faint breeze brushes over the circle’s margins as the other boy steps in with a cheerful smile and a respectful bow.
Giri’s eyes close as for a moment he listens to a noise only he can hear carried on the back of the breeze and faintly nods. His fingers tighten on the blades handle.
“Let’s make this a clean fight o.k?” His opponent calls cheerfully as he grips the scale-patterned hilt of the blade at his own side and draws. The Weirlight gleams eerily over the shining wave-patterned steel.
Giri smiles back at him, his body appearing to relax as he gives his opponent a thumbs-up signal. The Kiri Nin repeats the gesture then jerks the thumb across his throat.
“Let the battle begin.” Akira announces across the entire circle and Giri leaps forwards, his hand still on the blade’s hilt and keeping his eyes on his opponent’s body instead of the shining blade.
He can feel the icy cold eyes fixate on him and knows that while he must display enough skill to impress Doku’s father he also must protect the secrets his own father had left behind to defend the village.
The silver blade flashes by his shoulder and instead of drawing the Luminosity Katana Giri’s grip loosens and he plants his palms flat on the ground.
His booted feet slam into Ryuuga’s wrists with a crunch and the blade is forced from the Kiri Nin’s fingers.
Lithely twisting his skinny body Giri catches the hilt of the blade as it begins to fall and rises to his feet in the same motion, coming up behind Ryuuga and pressing the blade swiftly to his throat.
A thin trickle of blood oozes from a shallow cut as Ryuuga carefully raises his bare hands in a gesture of surrender. “All right, you got me. I give up.”
A frustrated moan comes from where Naginata is sitting and behind his bandages Akira smiles.
Giri pulls the blade back, handing it hilt-first to its rightful owner as Ryuuga grins sheepishly. “Hey, bro, that was some crazy s**t, how’d you do that?”
“I am of the Ken Clan; swords were named for us.” He says curtly before relaxing with a smile. “I can teach you if you want.”
“Well then, if that’s our last fight-“Akira starts to say before he is interrupted. “Akira-Sama, there are two who still have to battle.” A cool voice says from the ring side and Akira wonders who he has missed.
Unfolding his skinny limbs Wana stands and glares at Sero, his eyes hidden behind reflected light. The Uchiha slowly leans down and softly whispers new orders into his teammate’s ears, sealing in his orders by staring into Rifuto’s blank eyes.
Mechanically the boy nods and steps forwards into the circle as Wana does as well.
Wana’s eyes go to Sero once more as he points at his opponent then mouths the words “This is you.”
“O.k. well if you’re both ready…” Akira stutters.
A second later Karakuri steps into the circle beside Wana and Sero’s eye twitches.
“Aren’t these supposed to be one-on-one matches?” He protests, appealing directly to the village leaders.
“A Shinobi is allowed Ninja Tools. In the discipline of Puppetry a Puppet is classed as a tool regardless of how humanoid it may or may not be.” Wana replies as Akira fumbles for their registration form.
Karakuri grins as Wana carefully pats the top of his head. “My puppet just so happens to be 80% human and I wished for him to become a Chunin too.” Wana points dismissively at Rifuto. “There is nothing in the rules about puppets being unable to register, after all that thing was allowed in.”
“You’re not registered as a Puppet Master.” Sero protests with less certainty in his gaze. “You’re registered as a Genjutsu specialist.”
“Oh, am I?” Wana says with a mocking surprise, his expression still hidden behind glasses glare. “There must have been a mix-up in our registration forms, right Karakuri?”
Karakuri opens his mouth wide with a sound of grinding gears as a white pane slides down in front of his eyes and lights with a flickering white brightness. His body hangs limp as a corpse, unnatural in its position. Under the Weirlights even his skin looks unnatural.
“Let me show you the puppetry techniques of the Revived Ones.” Wana hisses and Sero flinches back.
“Rifuto, kill him!” He barks out the order but his slave stays frozen in position in the centre of the circle.
“Rifuto obey!” Sero calls out more harshly and Wana grins as he pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose.
“I did tell you that you have been misinformed right? I am the Puppet Master…Karakuri is the Genjutsu Specialist.
Karakuri yanks his head up and Rifuto follow the motion, hypnotized by the flashing lights of the mechanical puppet’s eyes. His pupils have dilated to the point they take up most of his eye and with shaking steps Rifuto raises his arms and steps towards the lights.
“Rifuto, stop that!” Sero orders and Wana slowly shakes his head from side to side as Rifuto stops in front of Karakuri, reaching up his hands towards the hypnotic lights.
“I will show you how you command a puppet. Karakuri, convert!”
What happens next happens swiftly. Karakuri makes a small mechanical whimpering noise to show he has received the order and his head twists back as his ribcage opens up and unfolds with a sound of tearing fabric, his clothing parting along a centre line and sticking closely to his flesh.
The mechanical puppets arms bend back and in on themselves as the metal ribs unhinge, extend and unfold into spider-like claws extending from the sides of his opened out chest. There are no internal organs inside, only the white cord of his spine is exposed by the opening claws. The skin between his arms is spread wide like a cobra’s hood. The skin parts over his skull, exposing the wet red muscle clinging close to the bone as the lights implanted in his eye sockets flare more brightly.
Instead of intestines a long spool of thread-like wires rests in the puppets stomach, the long metallic claws of his false ribs parting to show a variety of complex tools at their ends. Various small devices apparently grown out of equal parts bones and metal rest in rows along his sides. The wire starts to unspool and Karakuri dives forwards.
The eight metallic claws plunge into Rifuto’s hypnotized body, each one darting busily over the defenceless boy as Karakuri drags Sero’s servant towards him. The wire unspools, metallic devices being embedded in flesh as the claws dart and jab and begin to sew.
From where he stands Sero has the best view of one of Karakuri’s claws spear into Rifuto’s eye sockets and yank out his eye then plug a white light in its place. His face goes pale.
Moving swiftly Rifuto doesn’t even have time to scream as the bones are taken from his arms and legs and stowed away neatly in Karakuri’s body cavity, the floppy limbs then folded in around what remains of Rifuto’s body as the ball of boneless flesh is picked up, sewn tight and then tucked away inside Karakuri’s body.
With barely a sound Karakuri folds back up again, the long metallic claws folding themselves back in and settling as a ribcage as his skin once again settles to cover it. His face refolds itself around his skull and with a blink the lights slide to the back of his eyeball where they cannot be seen.
Looking a bit plumper Karakuri takes the three steps back to Wana’s side. Wana pats him on the head.
Apart from a splattered stain of red on the ground there is no sign that the being known as Rifuto once stood there. A shocked silence sweeps across the watchers; Naginata breaks it with the loud unexpected sound of laughter. “You see ********?! That’s the way to ******** do it! I love this kid!” She says loudly as several Jonin audibly begin to vomit. “Encore! Let’s get that little Konoha ******** in with him next!”
“Well…Victory goes to Wana.” Akira manages to stutter out, afraid to look at the Hokage’s face. “Though I believe you were not supposed to…uh…kill your opponent.”
“That was not necessitated Akira-Sama.” Wana says politely. “If you did not want me to kill him you should had stopped the match when it became obvious he could not win.”
Wana turns towards Sero as he steps from the ring.
“That being the moment he first stepped into the ring. I look forwards to facing you in the finals.” Wana adds maliciously.
Cresting the horizon the sun spills its first rays of light into the pale blue sky.
“In that case congratulations to all our remaining entrants. We will be taking a one month break to prepare the final stage of the exams and I advise you take the time to improve your jutsu and learn more about your opponents. Until then I suppose everyone is dismissed.” Akira manages to get out in a voice of as much decorum as he can manage and watches as the Jonin’s lead what remains of their teams from in front of the forest.
The wind carries to him the sounds of chiming bells.
“This is too much of a headache.” The future Kemurigakure groans. Hideki’s student has just proved to him exactly why he really does not want the blind child’s candidate to win. “I’m going to sleep.”
