Scott wandered into his classroom and flicked on the lights. The desks were all empty, except his. His desk was the large one up front with the stacks of quizzes and homework that he had promised to grade. That, of course, was before he and Logan went to get Kali.

Scott wondered, as he sat down, if his talk with Alex would do any good. There was no stopping the boy from 'having fun', as Alex liked to put it, but there was a possibility in delaying his fun with Kali. He didn't know a thing about Kali except that she controlled fire, was good with a knife and could run like mad. He wondered where she learned to fight, but stopped his thoughts right there.

He was treating her like a prisoner. That was not what the school was meant for. Plenty of mutants came in with pasts they would like to forget. There was just something about her that he couldn't trust, but he didn't know what.

Scott pushed his thoughts aside because his students deserved his full attention. He glanced over the piles of papers and randomly picked one to start with. He took a deep breath and began.

Kali wandered down the classroom halls, knowing that Orroro had told Scott to take it easy for the rest of the day. She wondered what Scott wanted to ask her, because they had seen each other over the course of the day. It seemed like he had been trying to keep tabs on her. But, who could blame him? After all, she did throw a knife at him and gave him a few bruises on their first meeting, before arriving. Who was to say that she couldn't do the same to the other mutants?

It was the idea that he couldn't let go of their first meeting, that made her wonder what she was doing, at the school. Charles Xavier said that she had two choices. She could stay as a student, or in their cells, until they figured out what to do with her. So far, she didn't think they had connected her to any crimes. Or maybe they thought the school could change her. She wasn't sure she wanted to change.

Kali walked, casually, into Scott's classroom. Her emerald eyes took a quick inventory of everything from the posters on the wall to the tiles specks in the carpeting. Scott was sitting at his desk, red pen in hand, pouring through quizzes.

"So you send messengers to find me," she said, with all seriousness, as she stopped three feet from his desk and felt herself fall into attention. Her right hand held her left wrist, behind her and her Emerald eyes stared at the window behind Scott. "You have a question..."

Scott studied the redhead as she walked into his classroom. He had graded most of the quizzes, and they looked pretty good, for the most part. Kali seemed slightly irritated, which seemed to be the norm. He watched her walk and wondered where she had come from because everything about her screamed 'military', especially when she stopped at a loose attention, in front of his desk.

"Yes, Kali," he said, shifting his injured shoulder. "I realize that I have made a complete idiot of myself and I should give you the benefit of the doubt, the moment you walked through the door. Despite the fact that you actually injured me." He paused. "That's not my question, but I did want to appologize for my...behavior. Several people brought it to my attention."

Scott set the quizzes aside and studied Kali for another moment. "You can relax...I noticed that you have no school records. Most subjects, you shouldn't need to be placed in, but Math is one of the ones that you need to learn where you are at. Professor Xavier has left it up to me to find out where you are, after all, you do start your classes tomorrow."

Alex Summers, a.k.a. Havok, ran into the room just behind Kali. "Kali, wait...Logan told me to..." His voice trailed off as he noticed both Kali and his brother talking.

Kali eyed Scott with eyes that tried to see through his words. She didn't understand the intentions behind his apology, but she didn't have much time to wonder when Alex wandered in behind her, clearly having something to say.

Kali was almost thankful for the interruption. Almost. If Logan hadn't been in the sentence, or fragment of one, she would have been happier but she didn't know which of the two evils she wanted to tackle. Math or whatever Logan wanted.

Scott peered around Kali and saw Alex. "I'm going to get some coffee," he told them as he rose from his desk and wandered out the door to find some caffeine

Kali turned to Alex with a raised eyebrow. "Are you always the messenger?"

"Seems like it..." he was staring at the door, where his older brother just left, lost in thought.

Kali smirked. "Well, you're good at finding me," she said and turned to watch the door. "What does Scruffy want this time?"

Her eyes studied Alex. He seemed like a nice kid. No one who would want to cause trouble. At least not now. She leaned against Scott's desk with her palms resting on it, waiting to hear what Alex had to say.

"He thought you would ignore him and Scott, based on what happened...earlier. He thought that you would want to stay and watch the fight anyway, just to spite both of them. So, when you left, I was sent to bring you back..." Havok, fun-lover that he was, was still kind of nervous around her. After all, this was the girl who sliced open his brother's shoulder and fought the Wolverine like it was nothing.

There wasn't much that could make Kai laugh, much less give a genuine smile, but the idea that she was still not as predictable as some thought, did bring a genuine smile to her face.

She nodded. "I see...so, he wanted me to stay, but told me to go," she shook her head. That was one thing that she would understand. If ever given an order, by someone she deemed her superior, she would do it, even if she didn't like it. He had ordered her to go, more or less, and she did. The reality of the idea was that he wanted her to stay. No wonder Scott seemed to stumble over trying to find a question. She wondered if there even was a question to begin with.

"I suppose it is best to not keep the undecided waiting," she said with a shrug, that pushed her away from the desk. She began walking to the door, then paused, registering the nervousness that was in the room. "I don't pull knives on people that don't deserve it."

With that, she exited, back to the Gym.

Alex stood there for a minute, stunned by the fact that she smiled. Her smile made her beautiful, and Havok was shocked by the transformation. She needed to smile more often. Although, hearing what she said, he couldn't help but say to himself, "Logan and Scott didn't deserve it..."

He followed her out and back to the gym.

Scott wandered back into his classroom, with a mug full of coffee. He had wondered how long it would take Kali to return to the gym, but it didn't take long. Although he was aware of her general dislike of Logan, and was sure that she walked out of the gym because she didn't want to be near him, he assumed that she was driven by curiosity.

He had heard the conversation that she had with Alex. He heard her say that she didn't pull blades on people who didn't deserve it. He also heard Alex say that he and Logan did not deserve it. Scott shook his head. Somewhere, in her mind, it must have been right because he believed her when she said she didn't pull knives on people she didn't believe were innocent.

He recalled one of their conversations, on the way to the school. She had mentioned 'the innocents'. However, she never said who they were. At least she was aware that there were some in the world.

Scott sat back down at his desk, and began grading the last of the math quizzes. The grades helped him feel good about the information that he was giving his students. From the quiz scores, most of them understood what he was trying to teach them. Scott sipped his coffee and shifted his shoulder. He looked at the time and decided that he would look over the next day's lessons.

Scott just finished grading the stack of quizzes when his thoughts were suddenly interrupted by Xavier's call.

Scott, Kali has collapsed in the gym.

Scott was out of his seat within seconds and racing out his door. He left his coffee behind but his cell phone was in his hand.

"Hank!," he yelled into his phone, as he ran down the hallway. He didn't wait for Hank to answer. "Kali collapsed in the gym, I'm heading there now, but I'll get her down to you."

"Again," Hank asked, which surprised Scott.

"Again," Scott asked, still running. "I need to go."

It had been two weeks since Kali had come to Xavier's school. She went to her classes, like she was told, but didn't turn in any of the work. She never brought paper with her to class, although she paid attention and answered every question that was asked of her. She never spoke unless she was spoken to and she tried to stay out of everyone's way.

During tests, she found a reason to leave class and to stay away until the period ended and it was time to move on to the next one. Science was a battle that she knew she wouldn't win. She had talked with Xavier and he told her that he wouldn't take her out of science. Everyone needed it, though Kali would not see why.

It was the middle of the day and Kali found her way to Scott's classroom. She set her Advanced Algebra book on her desk and sat, with nearly perfect posture, waiting for class to begin. Hoping that her secrets would last through another day. Her biggest secret of all was hidden by a white, long sleeve shirt and black vest. No one would see her shoulder now.

Scott watched as his students filed in and found their seats. He began handing back their homework, that he had just finished grading, as he studied each face. He had been teaching for a while and knew the stories of many of his students. Being a teacher, he also knew that sometimes things happened during the day and he gauged how his class would be, today.

This period was an interesting mix of students. First, there was Alex, who had been unusually quiet since Kali came and they had their little talk. He doubted that anything he said actually got through to the boy, but he did hope. One of Alex's friends was in the class, as well. Then, there was Kali.

Scott had been constantly thinking of how he could reach Kali. There was something different about her, something she was hiding and he wasn't sure that he was okay with it. Logan was right, they needed to keep an eye on her. He had been seeing everything that Logan had said, the day that she was enrolled. She hadn't gotten in a fight yet, but she made it known that she wouldn't back down. She also did as she was told, though everyone could tell that she didn't like it. So far, the only problem was her attitude.

That, and they still hadn't been able to get her to Hank. Hank was understanding and didn't want to push the issue so soon after...whatever one would call her little freak out.

Scott glanced at his grade book and noticed that in two weeks, he still had nothing for Kali. They had a quiz and homework nearly every night. She hadn't handed in anything. He raised an eyebrow and made a mental note to talk to some of her other teachers about her work, or lack thereof. Though, she seemed to participate in class.

Scott continued to hand out papers.
