Cairne Althos

The Shadow King

>>>> Note that I am still ironing all the kinks out.

Note that his alignment is evil and him ever showing up is NOT A GOOD THING.

Also Note: I will not allow him to die. ( yet) There is a good reason for this: We do not have any evil characters right now. All of them are NPC's. We need to promote more interaction with the good and evil of island.

Oh and PM me if you are curious as to why I put something. I will be livid and probably ignore you for the rest of your miserable life if you dare touch this journal unasked. Okay not really. But most likely for at least a few weeks.

How to RP With Me

About Me

Name: Hal
Age: 27
Occupation: Your 'Sure, I'll be right up and fix your telelvision for you Mr. Guestpersonma'am! ' clerk.
Trade: Media Arts/ Animation aka: Storytelling.

AIM: cainaintable
PMs: Open
* Please do not quote me in the main thread unless you want something. *

Role-Play Expectations

A majority of you know that I take my RP very seriously and if I find something that isn't at all appropriate for either character, nor anything about the plot discussed, I will drop it without even a notice and move on to someone else. This isn't out of disrespect for the person... Okay, well it is kinda. But its a lot more complicated than that. I may love a person as a buddy buddy chat have a cup of tea sense, but sometimes they just fail at meeting my demanding RP needs.

I write. I am a storyteller. Each character is playing a part in the weave of the world in which Herds of Azreth resides in. Each character has a role. If that potential is not met, perhaps it has something to do with the way the character is wanting to go. Every character is alive in some way and they tend to end up doing things that the narrators ( er RP-ers in this case) just don't want them to do but they do anyways. Kinda like the little cricket in Pinocchio...A conscious.

Requirements for me are simple:

A Beginning and a definite End
----- If you know how you want to begin something, and know how to end it, the middle falls into place and will allow for the most diversity and the more likely hood of variables and character development. If it ends up not where it was supposed to end, we can always look back and see what happened in the long run and how this will effect the overall plot we are wanting for those characters. IE: Its all about how and when you get there, not the destination.

Willingness to Let a Character be a Character
----- Character interactions are not to be taken personally. Ever. Yes, sometimes things will need to be rationalized, but that doesn't prevent a character from doing what it is they need to do. That is what makes a great RP: You can't change your personality overnight, why would you think you could a character because someone doesn't like it?

Ability to Write
-----You need to at least be able to formulate five to ten sentences and be willing to go up to at least twenty paragraphs if you are wanting to write with me. I write detail. I write the characters thoughts, feelings, desires... Hell, if you let me, I'd probably write the letter that the character is writing and force him to dictate it to yours twice with revisions and possible spelling errors. Oh...and you need to be able to spell. Or at least know where to put commas and periods. Use of a Semi-Colon would probably rock my world, but that's an advanced step that I have found very few know the use of in the B/C.

Exceptions to this is when I am doing IM Role-Play's with you or there is nothing productive to be said.

Bare Bones

Until I find a picture or get unlazy and make one, enjoy amazingly boring and detailed stats. You're welcome.

Image Temporary: Ty Mana for drawing him. Coloring by Puddleink
User Image
Height: 6'3" Inches.
Weight: 185 Lbs Around.
Age: 27 years
Race: Human
Class: Bandit/Outlaw/Upper Middle to Serf Class Income
Alignment: Evil

Hair: Vibrant red, almost orange that is kept at an inch length. Often times, Cairne is seen spending time in front of a reflective surface to trim a stray hair that grew too quickly back into place. Usually this is done with a large hunting knife. There is no such thing as overkill.

Eyes: Foggy blue. He isn't blind, but the powder blue of his eyes is soft and has on occasion fooled folks into thinking him a kind man instead of the soulless being he is. These are by far one of his favorite features.

His nose has been broken several times, yet despite that he still smiles beautifully. Disarmingly, really. Might even get a few empathy votes there. Who would want to hit such a sweet man? ...Never mind that he just stole your horse and your entire fortune.... wait a second.....

Skin tone: Sunworn, Tan on pale.

Muscle distribution: Exceptionally toned and aimed for adaptability.

Marks: Below his right eye are two scars from a fight back when he was young. They're barely visible now, and application of stage makeup hide them easily. There are also tattoos along his sides in a black to sepia. Usually these inkings are covered by his shirt, unless its summer...

Clothing: As he rose through the ranks, Cairne aquired money. Now, he did spend half of that one women and drink, the rest was squirreled away for later. Because of that odd habit of his, he is able to afford quite nice gear.

The majority of his clothing is dark colors. Primarily dark blues, greens and browns. Boots, belts, gloves, and a wide brimmed hat are all that he owns in black. But as with all those that live primarily outdoors, he dresses to the season and to the current fashion.

However he is never seen without his fine black boots that do hold a slight heel, but the heel is only for riding if and when he commandeers a horse.

Autumn and Winter he breaks out fur lined clothes. Jackets and cloaks lined with the furs of the animals that tried to defeat him ( such as the local cats, bears, wolves, and occasionally buck and gryphon) keep him comfortable and stylish. Darker colors are worn in the autumn to match the folliage and the ever encroaching night, and even darker ones still in winter when the moon sees the land more than the sun.

With Spring and Summer, the layers are removed. Lighter fabrics are worn, and even lighter colors are brought out. Greens and purples mostly to blend in with the varying foliage.

It is difficult to pick out an exact style that he wears because of his nature and what his motives are. Motives with him change like the weather: Don't like it, wait five minutes.

In every RP he appears, I will give a detail description of his clothing. I may not enjoy it, and I may end up being absolutely pissed at Cairne for his pickiness...

How The Shadow King Came to Be

Still in progress, and it will be continued to be updated as his thread is interwoven with the rest of the world.

The Shadow King, as he's called, is a relative of the Alchemist of the King via Cousinhood. It should be noted that it isn't often any member of a powerful magical clan goes rogue and off its rocker, but Cairne's parents were those that did. It is the responsibility of the living matriarch to dispose of those and all those associated with them to prevent anything from happening. It was most unfortunate that Nam didn't know that her daughter in law had a child. It was even more unfortunate that the child was off screwing the neighbor's daughter when the mercenaries came aroudn to extinguish his parents. This is why no one in the Althos clan on the island knows of the boy called Cairne...and why Cairne knows of them but keeps well away. A grudge is a terrible thing to waste.

From his parents, he learned of magic and tapped into that ability. While he isn't as powerful or as dedicated to the craft as his more notable family members; Cairne is profecient in concealment and illusions. He works primarely with conjuring illusions, following in his parents footsteps and became a bandit king as it were. The entire branch was said to have been cut and destroyed, but the boy did live. Grew up with a bunch of pirates, and then took over the pirates. And that was that really. But because of the lack of formal training, he never did unlock his full potential. ( This is a good thing. Imagine a Magus with the abilties of Zel roaming around... This is why I'm killing off most of his abilites but those he learned on his own.) He turned to learning how to move with the shadows, pull them, form them, and essentially walk silently. Cairne took also to magicianry--illusions and slights of hand. Swordplay was taught while he was growing up in the bandits camps here and there across the greater herd plains and freshiya woods. He is skilled, but then again, he doesn't bother boasting. Its easier to slit their throats at night if someone gets too cocky and plans a coup than to do the whole stand up challenge thing. The message is a bit louder to those that were sleeping in the same tent--- he doesn't tolerate boasting fools unless they are being good little bandit minions and distracting the local patrols and spies from Cairne.

He hires blundering idiots to do most of the dirty work, counting on the fact that they'll get caught. This helps add to his legend, and keep the fear in the hearts of those that dwell in his stomping grounds. It also keeps authority well away from his actual stomping grounds. Cairne never makes camp

If and when he has to wander into the more populated areas, Cairne takes on a multitude of disguises ranging from old beggers to strapping honest farm workers there for the first time. Mud seems to be his best friend. It keeps the smarter people away since apparently they don't want to get filth on their fine imported silks.

The one thing that all Althos on the island can agree to is the Wool from Nod is the finest in the land. Cairne will grunt and huff if someone tries to sell him some sub-par cloth and claim its from his relative's estate there, but he knows better than to huff and bark about that

Skills and Limitations

Magick: Shadow
Highly Proficient
The only thing that he has mastered completely is vanishing to and from shadows. The limitations on this are that he can only vanish to and from places he has already been. Because of this, he has had to learn how to sneak about without drawing attention to himself, hence the multitude of disguises and why he is always just hovering around on edges of crowds. He has issues dealing with magick of the light side of the coin as he wasn't trained in those particular delicate scenarios.

Cairne cannot heal, he cannot harm another being through the use of his mind, and he cannot do super duper fancy crap with it. He can make shadow whips though which are incredibly useful when fighting dirty.

Magick: Fire
Average
Being a citizen and borne on the floating Island, he is able to access a very small spectrum of fire magic. It is commonly called Magefire. His is a deep purple with a violet centered flame. Again, Magefire doesn't burn hot, it is just a light that those saturated in magic ( and most of the island is ) can conjure up when they need it... like their tinderbox got soaked or lost.

Skills: Short-range Blade Weaponry
Above Average

Skills: Long-Range Blade Weaponry
Mastery

Skills: Firearms
Above Average
Because of the technology level of the Island, any fire arm is simple, crude, and well below the standard that is on the Land's Below. Cairne carries a Flintlock pistol with him with a few rounds he 'rescued' off of a dead monk from the Land Below. They work especially well on demons, but the demon sightings aren't all too common. He doesn't see the need to use them on people as knives work better. You can poison knives, the heat of the shot burns the poison off the ammunition round.

Skills: Personable
Grand Master
Yes, he's a manipulative b*****d. That's what he does. He spent many years perfecting fake empathy, sympathy, and interest to gain knowledge and learn about the nature of his enemy. In this case it would be all the loyal citizens that follow under the blind lead of anyone with any sort of Skill. Its a bit hypocritical, but it is something that he holds strong to. Cairne, though, does take genuine interest in a few beings when he finds a bright light in them, or a light that he finds useful. Usually it is amongst those that aren't quite walking the path of Light and Good. Because of his personable nature, he's walked right up to the palace gates, chatted with the guards and learned all he needed to know about who lives there, why they are there and whom he should just avoid altogether. The conclusion of that visit was that he should just stay the hell away from the palace and let his goons deal with it if he ever storms the castle...which won't be any time soon. The other side of his personable nature would be when interrigating prisoners back at the main camp. It disarms and more information is given out than the poor soul knows, as they think they found an ally only to get themselves sliced to bits.

Skill: Manipulation
Mastery
He's the fricking Shadow King. No one in his own camp know's he's the actual leader save for two very close people. And even then, sometimes they don't know that this man could be their leader until suddenly they find themselves glass eyed and seeing the light. He's got half of Freshiya woods whispering his name like a god while he walks around buying a few apples here, a pelt from a hunter in town, and chatting with the tavern keepers like a good way-traveler.

Skill: Brutality
Grand Master
Sub-sect of Personable and Manipulation, He just likes it. And excelled at it. That's pretty much it. He'll show some restraint when it is needed otherwise, " There is no such thing as Overkill."

Chosen

He doesn't see the worth in having an equine as a soul partner. In fact, he finds it utterly disgusting and unsettling that humans so eagerly took these beasts of burden, bred for the use of man, into their hearts and treated them like equals.

Now, he isn't against those that need that companionship to fill some sort of sick hole in their hearts. He has no need of them. Those that are found in teh camp to be bound to one of these Azrein are captured, coerced into bringing their companion to the camp where both are either slaughtered for a camp moral boost, or bound into eternal servitude with rather non-idle threats of destroying the other's soul.

By the way...the above act is considered extremely illegal on the Island and on the Lands Below. Just in case you're wondering.

Relationships

Aquaintances
Ellendar --- Demon Hunter ( Played by Nay-nay)
--------- Cairne, in a chance meeting at a bar, finds this elven man particularly interesting, and though the sharpness of the mind of the elf is offsettling Cairne finds him a relief from the dull moronity at the main encampment. Originally, Cairne was going to slit the man's throat and take that demon-hunting sword, but he grew to like the man. Or at least, Cairne is letting him live until further notice.

Blood
Zel Althos -- Cousin ( Played by PuddleInk)
Nam Althos -- Grandmother ( NPC Magus)
