"Darren, what the hell are you doing?!" Dan shouted, trying to get free from the crystal restraints his friend put on him, Makari, and Aya. "What does it look like? I'm ending things once and for all," Darren replied. "Anyone who gets in my way will be taken down." "Even your friends?" Dan glared at Darren. "What are you thinking?!" "Stay out of this! This is the only way!" "You'll be killed! Let us help!" Dan pleaded. He turned to Aya. "Aya say something to him! Get him to see-." "I said stay out of this! Besides, I have nothing to say to her so butt out!" Darren saw Aya begin to open her mouth but he shot her a dark look to silence her. She led him to believe she was dead, broke his heart, and when he came back to save her, she was in Arrel's arms. Without another word, he pointed an arm at her and a wall of crystal shot out, pushing her and his friends back out of the room, just like Aya had pushed him out three years ago. He shot out another blast of crystal at the rest of the room, blocking every possible entrance. Now he could focus on what he had to do now that he had sealed off any way his friends could interfere. He'd already figured out how strong they and their Elements were, and made sure the crystal could withstand anything they threw at it. Now the only ways that barrier would break would be if he allowed it or if he died. He turned away from his friends and turned his attention back to the person in front of him. Arrel looked at Darren. "So, do I get your full attention this time?" "Oh yeah," Darren replied, his arms already crystalyzing. "It's all yours!" He charged at Arrel, bringing his right arm back, his fist transformed into a crystal gauntlet. Arrel stood still, hands still in his pockets, that smirk on his face grew larger. Darren hated that smirk. He slammed his fist out at Arrel's face. Arrel brought his left hand up and caught Darren's fist as easily as if the boy had thrown a pebble. His smirk grew at the look on Darren's face. Darren looked like his world had turned upside down all over again. "You honestly think you can take me out just like that?" Arrel laughed, gripping Darren's gauntlet-like fist. Cracks started to form over the crystal. "You must be mental. You have no idea what you've gotten yourself into." "Shut up!" Darren snarled and thrust his other fist at Arrel's face, the crystal morphing into a single-edged blade. Arrel moved his head aside and reached up with his right arm, bringing it over Darren's. His hand clamped Darren's forearm as he trapped the rest of Darren's arm against his side. "You should give up now," he said, releasing Darren's fist as he hooked his leg behind Darren's knee. "You're out of your league." To emphasize his point, he slammed his palm up against the underside of Darren's chin and flipped him over to hit the ground hard. Darren's head smacked against the hard metal floor; the impact only added to the pain already shooting through him. His vision turned white with pain. Suck it up Defective, Darren's other half told him. I didn't sign up for returning here just to watch you get your a** kicked. If you can't beat a lame copy like him, then maybe I should step in.

"Copy?" Arrel said, sounding a little confused, but then he realized what Darren's other side meant. He laughed. "Oh, you mean all that stuff I did with your one of a kind Crystal Element." Darren's vision cleared and he sat up rubbing his jaw and stared at Arrel. Again, Arrel seemed to be able to hear Auren. But that was impossible. Auren and Darren shared the same body, and only they could hear what the other said. So how could Arrel hear what no one else could? Arrel read the dumbstruck look on Darren's face and knew what the boy was thinking. "We're alike in many ways Darren. The way we talk, act.... our taste in women." He nodded over to the entrance where Aya and the others were trying to break in to no avail, letting his eyes linger on Aya. Darren's face burned as he remembered finding the elf for the first time since he returned to the EDC. Finding Aya and Arrel. "Shut your damn mouth!" he shouted, wind whipping up around him violently. He whipped his arm at Arrel and a powerful gale shot out at his opponent. Arrel brought his arms out to shield himself as the gale hit him, knocking him back a few feet before he could gain some footing. "Nice breeze," he said, lowering his arms. "But. I. Was. Talking!" He swung his own arm at Darren, sending him crashing into the opposite wall as a violent blast of wind hit him. Darren fell to his knees, vaguely awar that Arrel was saying something. "As I was saying, you and I are a lot alike Darren. We even have our own alter egos, and that's how I can hear what you and Auren say." Arrel walked slowly towards his opponent. "But I'm afraid that's where our similarities end. You see, there are two reasons why you can never beat me. First, unlike you I've accepted my other half and made him mine, leaving only me in control of every Element at my disposal." Darren got to his feet, fire winding its way over his arms from his clenched fists. He ran at Arrel, letting Auren take over out of habit. Auren shot the fire at Arrel, following up with an onslaught of razor-sharp crystal needles. Arrel knocked aside the flames and held out his palm, stopping the crystals in midair. He turned his hand into a fist and the crystals started to change. "The second, and most telling reason is..." They shattered then reformed; the light hit them in a different way than before. Darren's eyes widened. "Diamond?" "...Is because I'm on a whole different level than you!" Arrel snapped his fingers and the diamond needles shot at Darren. Darren didn't even have time to move. The diamonds hit him before he could even blink. His cheek was cut as two went past his head, his arms were torn up by dozens of them, his legs got the worst of the attack. About twenty of the diamonds shot into his legs. Darren cried out in pain and fell to his knees, reaching down to yank them out violently, ignoring the pain and blood. Arrel laughed. "This is rather fitting, a half-assed loser with nothing, kneeling before his superior." "Funny," Darren grunted, tossing aside the last of the needles. "You don't look like you're kneeling in front of me." Arrel scowled. "Cute. Roln was right, you do need to learn respect." He swung his leg out and slammed the side of his foot into Darren's head. Darren was knocked to the side and saw stars. Arrel kicked him hard in the stomach then grabbed him by the back of his jacket. He lifted Darren up and rammed his knee into his chest. "What's the matter?" he said, pullind Darren to his feet. "I thought you said you were going to end things!" He slammed his fist into Darren's gut. "Where's all that cockiness from earlier!" he shouted, tossing Darren aside. Darren couldn't breathe, Arrel had knocked the wind right out of him. What are you doing! You're getting your a** handed to you! Auren shouted. I know! Shut up! Darren replied in his head. Shove over, I'm taking control. What? No! I can do this on my own! "Tough," Auren replied, taking over the body. "My turn now."

Arrel smiled - a cruel, wicked turn of the lips that was almost a sneer- and clapped his hands slowly. "Darren's other half, Auren, right? I've been wanting to meet you for some time. I've heard a lot about you, frankly, I'm a fan." "Oh?" Auren said. In a flash, he was behind Arrel, holding the edge of the single-sided crystal sword Darren kept with him at all times against his opponent's neck. "I'm flattered." Arrel didn't even blink at Auren's uncanny speed. "I must say, I'm impressed with your work. King of the Arena back in the day. Until you were put against the elf that is. Tell me, how does it feel to lose?" "Technically I never lost the fight, the Defective did." "Semantics. I only ask because I've never lost one." "Quit your bragging, it's unbecoming." Arrel smirked and knocked away the sword as he pivoted and slammed his palm into Auren's chest, letting loose a bolt of electricity on contact. Auren covered his chest instantly in crystal while pushign back with his wind. "Impressive, you move fast." "I could say the same for you. Is that natural speed or do you use your elements to help?" "Why would I tell you that?" Arrel's smirk grew and he vanished from sight. Auren blinked and whirled around, looking for his opponent. He froze when he felt a blade against his throat. "I happen to be naturally faster than most, but sometimes I like to mess with my opponents by using my elements." Arrel whispered in Auren's ear. "For instance, where's that sword that's so important to you now?" Auren's eyes flicked to his hand, the sword was gone! "What did you do." Auren laughed and pressed the blade harder against Auren's neck, knicking the skin a little. "I used a favorite element of mine, Stop. It allows me to freeze time." Auren flexed his hands preparing to strike. "So," he said, hoping to distract Arrel, "that means you happen to have my sword in your hands right now?" "Correct. If you so much as twitch, I'll slice your throat open." "My, my, you may be more bloodthirsty that even I am. You seem to have forgotten something though." "Oh?" "That blade is mine!" The sword shattered into dust. He took advantage of the distraction to slam his elbow into Arrel's gut, pushing back with a blast of wind, knocking the boy back into the wall. He whirled around and snatched the hilt out of midair when Arrel let go in surprise and, with a flick of his wrist, caused the dust to flow back into the sword, reforging the blade. Not pausing for a second he charged after Arrel, bringing the sowrd down as he went. Arrel brought his hand around, steel forming in his palm to create a sword hilt as a diamond blade shot out of it. The two fighters' swords clashed in an instant. The jumped away from each other and began to walk around in a slow circle, plotting their next attack. Auren was the first to act. he ran forward and swung the blade at Arrel's neck, feinting with his right hand before tossign the blade into his left. Arrel didn't fall for the trick and switched his own sword to his other hand, parrying Auren's attack while swinging his leg out at him. Auren grabbed the leg and slammed his head into Arrel's, flipping him over. As soon as Arrel hit the ground, he swung his other leg around, bringing it over Auren's head and wrapped it around his neck. He twisted around and flipped the other fighter over, slamming him face-first into the ground. Turning around he replaced his leg with his arm, squeezing it tightly around Auren's throat. Auren grunted as Arrel choked him, reaching behind him and jabbed his fingers into his opponent's eyes. Arrel shouted in pain and released Auren, who rolled over and forced him to the ground, slamming his head repeatedly into the floor. Arrel cried out and grabbed Auren's wrist, letting loose his EE -Evolved Element - Absolute Zero, freeing his opponent's wrist and rolled away. To think he had to resort to using one of the elements Roln had created specifically for him against this... this worm! The thought made him sick. "******** brat!" he snarled. "You'll pay for that!" "Like hell I will. Just give up, I don't have time to deal with worthless noobs like you when there's a more worthy opponent waiting for me!"

Arrel snapped. "What did you say?!" he shouted, violent gales of wind whipping up around him as the air around him crackled with electricity like the pre-sparks of within the clouds before a blast of lightning came to earth. "What did you ******** say?!" He held his arms away from his body as balls of fire formed below his hands, condensing until they formed semi-solid balls of molten lava. Arrel narrowed his eyes as the ground around him erupted in spikes of ice while his body was coated in steel and diamond armor, which flowed like water witht he movements of his body. Auren, he's lost it! "I can see that Defective!" Auren shouted angrily, throwing the sword aside as he covered his body in spiked crystal armor. "It doesn't change the fact that I'm about to gut him like a fish!" "Don't get cocky!" Arrel snarled and flung the magma at Auren, snapping his fingers and pointed them at his opponent's chest. A roar of thunder rocked the room as super-charged lightning shot out and straight at the target. Auren swung up an arm and instantly a crystal wall rose up to block the magma. The molten balls exploded against the barrier, melting foot-wide holes in it Auren quickly raise two more walls between him and Arrel. He heard the roar of thunder and closed his fists tight, making the crystal denser and thicker until they were as strong as the walls the Defective threw up to keep the trash he called friends out. He knew how strong the bolts of lightning Roln used were, and there was no way this punk's could be stronger. He was wrong. The lightning shattered the crystal like glass in an explosion of power and continued, unhindered, straight into Auren's chest. He was knocked back all the way to the crystal barrier at the entrance. Everything went white with pain; Auren could swear his heart stopped. I refuse to lose to this childish punk! He fought against the pain and his vision came into focus just in time to see Arrel launch another salvo of magma. He pointed his arm at them and blasted a burst of Silence -the Artificial Element developed by the EDC to cancel other Elements- at them. The magma burst apart and molten globs scattered everywhere. Crystal shards formed around Auren like floating shields and kept him safe from any harm. "That does it!" he snapped, getting to his feet, only faintly aware of the scorched hole in his shirt over his heart. "You're dead meat!" He snapped his fingers and the remainder of the crystal shards shattered into small, sharp needles "Skewer him!" he snarled and pointed at Arrel. The needles, as if they understood his words, shot straight at the boy. Arrel turned the steel covering his arms into two halves of a giant shield, and brought his arms together just as the crystal needles reached him. They hit the steel and ricocheted off it, falling harmlessly to the floor. Auren ran forward, reinforcing the crystal gauntlets on his hands and brought his right fist into the shield. The fist smashed through the steel, the crystal around it shattering. Quickly pulling it back, he slammed his other fist through the broken shield and into Arrel's face. Arrel grunted, raising a small diamond barrier between his face and the fist. It took the brunt of the punch, but he was still knocked to the floor. As soon as he hit the ground, he slammed his palms against the floor. Steel spikes shot out at Auren, splitting apart to wrap around his arms and legs.

Arrel got to his feet and walked slowly toward Auren, who was struggling futilly agains his bonds. "Where's your tough talk now Auren?" he sneered as he reached his opponent "What happened to taking me down? Are you having trouble keeping up with this 'noobie'? Weren't you going to make me dead meat?" He slammed his fist into Auren's face. "Didn't you have someplace to go!" He punched Auren hard in the gut. "What happened to being the best fighter this place had ever known!" He rammed his knee into Auren's chest. Auren cried out as two of his ribs broke. He struggled against the steel that kept him in place and glared at Arrel. "At least I never had to keep my opponents tied up in order to win!" Arrel glared and punched him in the ribs again, smirking at his pained cry. Auren narrowed his eyes and spat in Arrel's face. Arrel snarled and grabbed one of the steel restraints, letting loose a charge of electricity. He stopped the flow only when Auren's head dropped; he didn't want to kill him just yet. "Learn your place," he said. "Sh-shut the ******** up..." Auren grunted. Arrel narrowed his eyes and grabbed Auren's head, sending more electricity into him. Auren groaned, his eyes started to roll up. Hey! Get a hold of yourself Auren! "Shut up! I can handle this on my own!" he shouted at Darren in their head. No, let me take over while you take a break! "I said I can handle this!" "Both of you shut up!" Arrel said. "It doesn't matter which of you is out, the outcome will be the same!" Auren spat at him again. "You seem so sure of yourself, yet you keep me locked up. Sounds like you're scared of a fair fight." "This isn't some schoolyard fight!" Arrel replied, snapping his fingers. The steel restraints wrapped around Auren's body, rising up to cover his mouth. Arrel was tired of his empty threats. He wiped his face clean of Auren's spit and glared at him. "You don't get to cry 'foul' in war!" Oh, so this is war? Between whom and for what? "Between the EDC and you and your little resistance. And as you won't survive this battle. I'll tell you what the stake is. The spoils of war is none other than the Ultimate Element: Infinitia!" Infinitia? Darren replied. What kind of Element is that? Arrel placed his palm on his opponent's forehead, electricity sparking over his fingers. "Just the most powerful Element in all of existance, and the reason why this facility was made. It needs the energy from hundreds of Elementalists to fuel it. Nothing you need to concern yourself with. After all, this is where you die." Auren shouted in agony as electricity poured through him. There was nothing for him but pure and utter pain. Auren! Switch out! You're going to be killed! "AAAAAUUUUGGGHHH!!!!!" he screamed, his vision going blank. Darren tried to help, but trapped within his head, there was nothing he could do for his other half but watch. AUREN!! He watched in horror as Auren's mind began to split and then was shattered from the pain. The Fighter screamed one last time before his head fell limply against the restraints. When Arrel let the restraints vanish, he fell uselessly to the ground. "One down," Arrel said, removing his hand and sounding bored. "I hoped he would put up a better fight. Now all that's left is the weak one..." He kicked the boy's limp figure. "Get up little Darry, I know you're in there." Darren opened his eyes and rolled away from his opponent, gripping his chest. He felt broken, incomplete. Auren? he asked in his mind. Auren, are you there? "Give it up Darren, Auren's dead. Don't worry, you'll see him soon." Darren turned his eyes to Arrel. "Poor little Darry, everyone's always leaving him," Arrel mocked. "Mommy died while he was being born, daddy has no love for him, his only love left him and found someone else, and now his other half is gone forever." "SHUT THE ******** UP!!!" Darren grabbed his sword and rushed at Arrel, prepared to skewer the boy. Arrel smirked once before vanishing from sight. Darren felt the blood spurt out of his chest and back at the same time as he felt the pain in both locations. He turned and saw Arrel flicking blood off his own blade, and dropped the sword in his hand, not hearing it clatter to the floor. He opened his mouth to speak but could find no words His knees hit the floor a moment before he fell flat on his chest. He was vaguely aware of Arrel cackling something. The last thing he saw was of Dan and Makari screaming behind the crystal wall, their voices muted by the crystal, and of Aya staring in horror at him. Then, everything went black....

Where am I? I feel like I'm floating. I can't see anything. What happened? -Arrel seemed to vanish for an instant, then he reappeared behind Darren. Darren started to turn when the blood spurted out of his chest and back- That's right... Arrel cut me... So then, am I dead? This sucks... What about Aure- oh yeah... Arrel killed him... My body... feels heavy... What happens when you die? "Darren...." Whose voice is that? "Darren, sweetie." It's a woman's voice... It sounds... familiar... "Darren, honey, it's time to open your eyes." M-mom? Darren slowly opened his eyes, wincing at the light. He was in a bedroom; sunlight shone in from a single window. A brown-haired woman sat next to him. When she saw that his eyes were open, she smiled warmly at him. "Morning sleepyhead," she said. "What are you doing here?" Darren was speechless. That hair, those eyes... "M-mom...?" he asked tentatively. The woman smiled and messed up his hair. "Who else?" He couldn't believe his eyes. Here was Arianna, his mother, who died when he was little! Darren sat up and hugged her tight, tears falling down his cheeks. Arianna held her son like she had when he was a child and waited until he had finished crying, reaching up and wiped his cheeks. "Well now, my little boy's grown up. Last time I saw you, you were a cute little three-year-old, and now you're a big, handsome young man. How old are you now?" "Nineteen," Darren replied, his voice cracking a little. "Nineteen!" Arianna said, feigning shock. "My, how time flies." Darren cracked a small smile. "Are you doing well? Have you made any friends with the other children?" "Uh-huh," he nodded. "Are any of them girls? I remember there was one of your nurses that you had the largest crush on." "Mom!" he groaned. "Knock it off, that was-" "I know it was years ago sweetie. Can't a mother tease her baby boy?" "I'm not a little kid anymore!" "Well fine then, Mr. Grouchypants," Arianna said, puffing out her cheeks and crossing her arms as she pretended to be mad. Darren laughed. "You look like a blow fish!" "Hey!" his mother laughed, smacking his shoulder lightly. "Not nice!" Darren laughed again. Arianna smiled. "You never answered my question. Are any of your friends girls?" "A few" "Any cute ones?" Darren's thoughts turned to Aya and he blushed. "Ah-ha! I knew it!" Arianna said. "Tell me about her. What's her name? Is she your age? Is she nice?" "Aya. Her name's Aya Flett." "Elvish, huh," Arianna smiled. "She must be very beautiful then." Darren's blush told her all she needed. "Is she your age?" Darren nodded. "Have you two, er-" Arianna fumbled for a good word. "Had, um-." "Wha-? No! Nononononono!" Darren said, his face as red as a tomatoe. "Nothing like-. I-It's not like that mom! We've kissed, and held hands, and stuff like that!" "Oh, well, that's a relief," Arianna replied, flushing a little. "I'm too young for grandchildren."

Darren stared at her, then laughed. "I may be dead, but I'd still like to know that my little boy was safe." "Mom! Can we move on? You're embarressing me!" "I was just saying-." "MOM!" Arianna laughed and messed up her son's hair. "So, have you and Aya been together long?" Darren's grin faded and he looked down. "It's not... exactly like that.. You see..." He told his mother about how he met Aya, how she and he had been forced to fight in the Arena ("That Roln! I'll have some words with him when I see him. Turning the facility into THAT?"), how they had snuck out, and about their first kiss ("Awww, that's so sweet!"). His voice faltered when he told her about the last time he saw Aya before he ran away. Then he talked of his life outside of the EDC, how he ended up at Ava's Bar ("A vampire who runs a bar? Hmm. I may have met her, or was that a Werewolf at a lemonade stand...") and met some new people: Hinsei the water fairy; James and Ash the two werewolves who worked as waiters with him; Ava the vampire who owned the Bar and who was also his employer; Amura the elf who worked as the indoor barkeep and was Aya's sister; and Kyle the "Old man" who was in charge of the outdoor bar and his immediate boss ("He whacked his head when you asked him about the book? Ha, ha, ha! That's hilarious!"), how Makari had shown up one day and told him to come back, and how he learned that Aya was still alive after he had lived three whole years believing his love to have been killed. "... And so I came back after Makari and some others convinced me to... I'm not sure if I did the right thing though..." "Aya probably had her reasons for staying," Arianna said gently. "Like what?! We had a chance to escape! She could have come with me! We could have gone to her family like she said!" Darren jumped out of the bed and was shouting now, pent up sadness, anger, frustration, fear, and betrayal all coming out as tears fell down his face. "We could have figured a way to free everyone! Why stay? Why make me live on my own, with nowhere to go, no one to trust, just a gaping hole where my heart should be and the guilt and nightmares of her death; Why make me go through all that for three years! Three years of neverending pain, neverending sorrow, nothing but self-hatred and a wound that never heals! And then Makari shows up and says, 'Hey Darren, guess what? You remember that girl you love? The one who died? Well, turns out she left you behind and faked her own death. Ain't that just a kick in the teeth? So how are you?' What am I supposed to believe...." Darren slumped to the floor and brought his knees to his chest. He was tired of all this. In a smaller voice, he said, "Why'd she choose the EDC over me?" Arianna smiled sadly at her son. "Sometimes love makes us do crazy things to protect the people who hold our hearts." "I don't understand..." "You will, one day. Ask her. You may learn things that will help." "Why bother... It seems like I'm replaceable." "What makes you say that?" "She found someone else." "Did she say that?" "No....." "Then how do you-?" "Because I saw them! Her and Arrel! Kissing! How could I be so stupid as to think that she'd still... That after she chose the EDC... That three years later she wouldn't have changed, wouldn't care for someone else?" "Have you talked to her about it?" "Does it matter? She made her choice," Darren said darkly. "Why should I care what she thinks?" "Darren-." "I don't care!" he shouted. "I don't care about her, or anything she has to say!" "Darren Auren Silverling! That is enough!" Arianna sad, raising her voice for the first time. "My middle name is Auren?"

"Don't try to change the subject young man. Listen to yourself! Are you honestly believing all this? Do you honestly think that she would have gone through everything she did and not still love you? Or that you can just stop loving her, as if you could flip off a switch? I saw the way you lit up when you first talked about her, and I've heard the way you speak of her. Love like that doesn't just end. You still love her, and she still loves you." "But Arrel-." "Your brother was always adept when it came to his particular Element. It's called Sleep, and it's a very powerful form of Illusion. He can make people believe whatever he makes, and they'll think it's their own thoughts or memories, or what they see and feel and hear is real. If your Aya cares as much about you as I think she does, he wouldn't have been able to erase that love. He would have made her believe that he was the object of that love, but he could never have gotten rid of that feeling. You and he were always competing with each other like that." "Back up a second," Darren said. "It sounded like you said Arrel was my brother." "You and he were twins. And let me tell you, raising you both was like trying to get your father to stop working and eat with us at dinner. I swear, at times it was like I had three children to take care of. Heaven knows what things must have been like after the accident." "What are you talking about? What accident? I've never had a brother in my life." "You most certainly did. Always fighting over the silliest of things, always trying to outdo the other. But you two were also the best of friends, even if neither of you would admit it," Arianna said, a faint smile lining her lips as she remembered raising her two boys. "No! I'd never seen Arrel before I saw him and Aya! I don't know what you're talking about. I don't remember him or any accident." Arianna looked confused, then it hit her. "Roln! I should have figured he'd mess up without me, poor man would have blown up the EDC fifty times before your first birthday if I wasn't with him. Now I think I understand things, reckless knucklehead." Her words were soft, as if she pitied Roln. "It had to have been because of the accident." Darren stared at his mother, not understanding her. "We were working on a new Element; highly unstable. You and your brother were with us in the lab, fighting as usual. Your father and I argued over what should be done with subparticles and the placement of certain protons-." Darren lost her there. Arianna cntinued to talk about whatever mechanics were behind Elements, but Darrent stopped her when she got into Quantum Physics; his head hurt from too much science. His mother may be beautiful, but she knew way more scientific stuff than all of the EDC staff, even Roln. "Mom! Enough, just continue. I'm getting a headache." "Sorry honey. I get carried away sometimes." "Ya think?" Arianna stuck her tongue out at him and continued. "Anyway, while we were busy, you and Arrel started to show off with your Elements. The next thing we knew, diamonda and crystals and whatever else you two had shot everywhere around the room. Roln went to stop you two while I tried to make sure the Element sample was safe. I must have knocked some of its unstable matter together because all of a sudden it exploded. I woke up a week later; I was in bad shape. Most of whatever was in there hit me, but your father got some bad radiation too. You and Arrel got the lightest doses but Arrel was still unconscious, and you had just opened your eyes and were being taken to the ICU because your Element was going beserck. Roln came to visit me when I woke, but there was something off. He seemed different, like a man possessed by a darker half, or one who had succumbed to it. You lost your arm and a third of your torso in the explosion, he said, and something about two personalities but no recollection of anything. Days passed and my condition grew worse. Arrel woke up on my last day. Poor thing didn't even know who I was. I asked your father to take care of you both after I was gone." "Oh trust me, he 'took care' of me," Darren said, and rubbed his right arm, the one made of some special metal Roln had put in him. The metal grew with his body like bone and had some weird flesh-like covering that looked and felt like real skin and a real arm.

Arianna smiled sadly at her son. "I'm sorry, my child. Tell me, your father-" "Insane, bent on turning us all into some sort of key for some ultimate element." "Infinitia," Arianna said quietly. "That idiot... What about-?" "Also insane, but more like he's been corrupted. He's working with Roln." "No... Darren, you can't let them do it. Infinitia, it's what we were working on when all this started. It's not meant to exist, no one is mean to control infinity!" "Mom, if you haven't noticed, I'm kinda dead." Arianna shook her head. "Not your time. You've still got much left to your story. No, you're alive, but stuck between your world and here." "I don't-." "If you stay here much longer, you really will die. Honey, I wish I could explain better but there's not much time. Not if you want to see your friends, to see Aya again. Listen to me, now is not your turn to die. You must go back, stop your father and brother, whatever it takes..." "How am I supposed to go if I don't even know how I came?" Darren asked. "What is it that would keep you clinging to life? What is it that's so important that your mind won't let go? Think. Focus." Darren didn't need to. "Aya," he said. "It's Aya..." "Then hold onto that thought, your feelings. Let her take you back where you belong." Darren closed his eyes and imagined he could hear Aya talking to him. He remembered everything about her; her voice, her face, her scent, the feel of her skin, the way her eyes sparkled when she laughed. "And Darren," came Arianna's voice, sounding faint, "always remember-" Aya was laughing at one of Dan's jokes. She was looking serious, head bent as she read some of the books the education staff gave everyone. She was watching a meteor shower that all of them could just see outside their cell windows. He held her hand through the small space between their cells. Aya and he were outside, the power was off. They kissed. Hundreds of memories of her surfaced, all saying the four simple words that he could just barely hear his mother saying. I love you, Darren."

Darren's eyes opened. His chest felt soaked, and hurt like he had been cut clean through to the other side, which, as he remembered, was true. He heard Arrel laughing and lifted his head. His brother had his back turned. "He seriously thought he could win?" Arrel laughed, a disturbing cackle that sent shivers down Darren's spine. "Ahahahahahahahaha!" Darren's eyes started to blur, he was losing too much blood. "Not yet..." Arrel stopped mid-cackle. "Not yet..." No. Impossible... "I can't... die here..." Arrel turned around slowly. "I... can't lose..." His eyes widened in shock. Darren's body began to shudder. His vision flickered again, but he didn't notice it. A chant began in his head. Fight. Fight. Fight. Fight. Crystal spread over his body, covering him in armor. Fight. Fight. His hands and feet became crystal claws. Fight. Fight. Fight. Sharp spikes jutted out of the crystal on his back. His wounds were barely sealed by the armor, but at least the flow of blood had slowed. Fight. Darren's head was covered by a demon-like mask; it, like the rest of the crystal armor, flowed with the movements of his body so that it seemed as if the crystal was alive. Fight. Two sharp crystal horns jutted out of his forehead; sharp, jagged, crystal spiked teeth lined his jaw, opening whenever his own mouth did. FIGHT! Arrel stared at what Darren had changed into. For the first time in his life, fear ran through him. "I killed you. Th-there's no way you could be alive! I killed both your personalities! What are you?!" Darren stood up, his breath heavy and rasp. He looked around as if he didn't know where he was. Arrel clenched his teeth. "Whatever you are, I've killed you twice, and this time..." He held his palms upright, balls of magma forming in his hands. "...I'll make sure you stay dead!" He threw the magma balls at Darren's face. There was an explosion and black smoke hid the destruction. Arrel smirked. There was no way that- Crystal shards shot out of the smoke at his neck. What?! Arrel barely dodged the attack. The smoke was blown away in a powerful whirlwind. He had to steady himself with his Steel to avoid being blown into the wall. Darren stood, unharmed, his clawed hand pointing out at Arrel; a broken crystal wall lay in ruins around him. The magma had hit the wall instead of its target. Arrel narrowed his eyes. "You are starting to annoy me!" He pointed his arms at Darren and shot diamond and steel spikes at his opponent. Darren swung his other arm around and a blast of Element-stopping Silence knocked Arrel's attack away as though they were leaves in a tornado. Arrel snarled in rage and ran at Darren, covering his arm in diamond and steel armor, changing it to form a single-edged blade. He lined it with magma and brought the weapon crashing down into the ground, cleaving- nothing but air. He barely had time to register this before a foot slammed into his face, knocking him back into the wall. Darren stood right behind where Arrel had been, lowering his leg. He looked right at Arrel, wind whipping up around him. His eyes were glazed over, as if he wasn't even there.

Arrel pushed himself off the wall. "You're not even aware of what you're doing, just acting on instinct." He spat on the floor and noted that there was some blood mixed with it. "That was a lucky shot, but you won't get another!" He slammed his palms into the wall. Spikes of steel shot out to impale Darren. Not wasting a second, he activated his Stop ability. Time froze and Arrel used this opportunity to throw balls of magma, which stayed still; not moving until he allowed time to move normally again. He had a little over thirty seconds left. He made crystal needles form in the air around Darren, and finished by restraining Darren's arms and legs with frozen chains, his Absolute Zero element already starting to freeze his opponent's body. He moved behind Darren just as time started up again. Arrel slammed his hands into the ground, letting loose a wave of electricity, the element enhanced by his Super-Conductivity power. The electricity, which had no resistance from anything, flowed at full power into Darren's body just as all of Arrel's other attacks hit. Arrel stood up, panting hard. "Take that, ya damn frea-." A hand shot out of the destruction and slammed into Arrel's face. Its grip was too strong for him to pull free. Darren's face came into view, the crystal covering his head was all shattered save for around his jaw and chin. He lifted Arrel into the air. Arrel struggled to break free; how could this talentless brat be this strong?! He gripped Darren's crystalized arm and sent ice all along it, but was thrown into the ground, the ice shattering along with some of that annoying crystal armor. Darren's hand was still clamped around his face. Darren was breathing hard. This was getting annoying. He slammed Arrel's head into the ground again, then a third time. He was vaguely aware that his armor was starting to break. Arrel grunted in pain. He would not lose to this upstart freak!. He slammed his palm into Darren's face. "Burn to bones and ashes!" He shot his magma straight into Darren's head. But nothing happened. No magma No Darren in pain. Darren laughed. "Sucks when your body's subconscious defences won't let you use your abilities huh? It knows that you'd be hurt by your own elementif you tried to let it out. That's the problem with higher level elements; the higher the level, the more your body will refuse to work in you're in the red zone." He lifted Arrel back up and threw him into the air, using his wind to blast him higher. When Arrel came back down Darren knocked him aside with a roundhouse kick to the face. Arrel slammed into the wall. He was having trouble focusing his eyes and there was a sharp ringing int his ears. He saw the last of Darren's armor shatter into dust. I can't believe I have to resort to this, he thought, reaching into his jacket. His hand grasped the gun he kept hidden inside. He pulled it out, switching off the safety and cocked the weapon. Darren reached behind his back and pulled out the gun that Auren had taken from a guard when he first returned to this hell hole. He whipped it out, turned off the safety, cocked, and pointed it at Arrel. The two pulled the triggers at the same time.

Arrel's shot went wide, missing Darren completely. Darren's hit its mark, piercing Arrel's lung and heart. Arrel's hand fell to his side as he fell to the ground, the gun clattering away. He felt his shirt turn wet with blood. Arrel coughed, blood trickling out of his mouth. Darren tossed his gun away and walked to his brother. "Why..." Arrel said. "Why won't you just stay dead... You've got nothing left to live for.. You pushed them all away.. like I planned... So why do you keep fighting..." Darren stood over his brother. "There's something I have to do, you were in my way." Arrel laughed weakly, more blood spilling out of his mouth. "Simple as that eh? Heh... you've changed... from how you were when this began..." "Don't get the wrong idea. I fought you because you were in my way. I killed you because you took something important from me." "Aya..." Darren nodded. "Remember what I said... at the beginning... About you and I being alike?" "I know. You don't need to say it." Tell her... I'm sorry.." Darren nodded again. "Heh.. if you and I met under different circumstances..." "Can it. I'm here only because I can't stand to see someone in pan. I'm not here to pretend like we could ever hace been friends." "Fine then... Finish it... Crystal head," Arrel laughed weakly again. Darren pointed his hand at Arrel. "Goodnight, brother..." A crystal pillar formed around Arrel, every bit of air becoming solid crystal. Arrel died instantly, a faint smile on his face. Darren allowed a few tears to fall in mourning before he looked to the stairs at one end of the room, those led to where Roln was, then he looked back to the entrance where his friends were sealed off by the crystal wall. He looked at Aya. He couldn't tell what her expression said. "If I come back, we need to talk... There's a lot I need to know, and I need to hear it from you..." Darren knew the crystal was too thick for her to hear him but he didn't care. He turned his back to her and shattered the crystal blocking the stairs and ran up them before letting the wall at the entrance to shatter. Two of the shards fell at Aya's feet, one was the deep blue color of the EDC's trademark earings, the other was the soft red color of her old ribbon. Darren hoped she would understand the crystal's meaning. * * * Darren reached the top of the stairs and the door leading to the EDC's power reactor when he heard the ceiling start to crack. He slammed his hand into the door's control panel, shooting his crystal into it. The panel sparked and burst, the wiring destroyed. The door slid open and Darren dashed inside just before the ceiling collapsed and crashed down, blocking the entrance. "Guess I can rule out backup," he muttered and turned to the center of the room. The main power reactor room was the center of the entire EDC, and the machine was the largest he had ever seen. Attached to it was a massive data processor which connected to the main power core. The core was nothing like he expected. It was a fluctuating mass of some sort of energy that shone with every color of the visable spectrum. The core grew and shranka over and over again as he watched. "Fascinating isn't it?"

Darren's head whipped around to see Roln calmly sitting at a monitor; hundreds of Holoscreens floated around him. Darren could see the other Elementalists trapped here running through halls, attacking the guards that tried to contain them, wincing as several guards resorted to firearms to take down the would-be escapees. The entire facility was in utter chaos. Roln snapped his fingers and the Holoscreens blinked out of existance. He looked at the power core. "That, Darren, is the ultimate Element, Infinitia!" Darren stared at the everchanging mass. "That's and Element?" His father waved the question aside. "All Elements stem from an existing model. How else do you thinkt we've been able to graft their power onto gifted humans and other living beings?" Darren looked away from the core. "How can that be Infinitia? I thought you needed everyone's energy to complete it." "The energy comes from Elementalists, yes. But the energy required to create Infinitia is released when Elementalists fight, either each other or with normal humans. Why do you think I created the Arena in this facility?" "I always assumed it was because you were a d**k." Roln looked at Darren as if he were a fly he longed to squash. "I see you still don't know how to respect your betters." Darren shrugged. "If there's any in this room, they must be hiding. All I see is you." "Insolent child!" Roln snarled and snapped his fingers. Darren fell to the ground as thunder coursed through him. Roln watched Darren squirm for a few seconds before snapping his fingers again. The electricity vanished but the aftershock still had Darren's body spasming. He gritted his teeth and forced himself to his feet. "b*****d." Roln laughed. "Say what you will, you've already helped me enough." "What?" "You fight almost every moment you're here. Every time, you pour all your power into the fight. I've gotten all the energy I need for Infinitia's completion. All thanks to you." Darren was dumbstruck. Infinitia was complete? And it was his fault? "Didn't you wonder why I let you live so long, despite the homicidal tendencies of your other half? You were a goldmine of power!" Roln stood up, raising his arms into the air as if praying to the heavens. "Infinitia's completion came about five minutes ago, at the end of your fight with your brother. I must admit, you two were the perfect keys to unleash the ultimate Element." "Why you!" Darren ran at Roln, his arms forming crystal blades. Roln pointed at his son. Steel sprung up out of the ground and wrapped itself around Darren, binding him in a metal cocoon, leaving only his head free. Roln got to his feet and walked over to the power core. "It was this Element that started it all. Back when I first created this facility it was called the ERF, Elemental Research Facility. I was ambitious, but clouded by the ideas of right and wrong. The ERF was designed to be a school where children with Elemental powers from all over the world could go. They could learn how to control their powers, grow up with peers, and integrate with the rest of the world. I thought it could help change society, maybe even the world. Imagine, a place where Elementally gifted children from all over the world could meet! All of them living together, learning together - no pressure from the rest of the world to cause them to fight or divide into social, ethnic, or religious groups. Then they could bring back all the learned to their own countries. Little by little, the entire world would learn to accept one another, until eventually there would be no differences betherr anyone!" Roln's eyes lit up as he talked about his old dream. "But as the years passed, I began to wonder what Elements truly were. Could they be see, touched, or sensed in any way other than how an Elementalist allowed? So I spent my time studying the Elements. I found a way to separate an Element fron an Element user; this led to the discovery that one could synthesize and Element. I dedicated my life to the development of new Elements. After four years of this I stumbled upon the three mythical Elements that no one today can control: Life, Death, and the most powerful of all- Infinitia. I could care less about the first two, but the idea of an Element with unlimited power entranced me. I convinced your mother to help me design a way to create and utilize it. We came close to it one day, but it went horribly wrong. However, it opened my eyes to the truth. We went about it all wrong! We were too worried about morality, the ethical point of view; we were too scared to push forward at the risk of human life. Once my mind learned this, I was able to rid myself of those petty weaknesses and move forward to try to create Infinitia again. And after all these years, it's finally worked!!"

Roln had the look of a madman now as he threw back his head and laughed maniacally. "I've succeeded where no one before could even dream of! The ultimate Element is complete, and soon, I will be its master!" He pressed some keys into the control panel and the core slowly started to lower. "What the hell are you yapping about!" Darren said, struggling to move in order to use his Elements, but no good. Roln looked at him with utter disinterest. "It would be a waste of breath to explain it to you, so I'll just show you." The core had now lowered enough for Roln to reach out to it. Darren knew instantly what his father was about to do. "No! Don't! You don't know what you're doing!" Roln's hand reached out and touched the strange mass, then his arm slid in up to his elbow. The core constricted, entering his arm as if he were absorbing it. The Element shone so bright Darren was forced to look away, squeezing his eye shut. He heard Roln laugh, then a blast of energy shot through the room. The steel around Darren dissintegrated and he was sent flying across the room into a wall. The pressure from the blast pinned him to it and threatened to crush him flat against it. Then suddenly the pressure vanished and he fell to the floor. He heard Roln laughing and raised his head, even that took a lot of energy to do "So this is what Infinitia is like. Amazing. I feel like a god!" Roln looked at his hands in awe. "No, I don't feel like a god... I AM a god!" "Do you have any idea what you've done!" Darren shouted, struggling to his feet. "You just got rid of the power core to this place! Without it, this place will collapse before being blown apart when the other reactors melt down! You've gone and killed us all!" Roln turned his eyes on Darren. "Maybe you insects, but I can't die- nothing can kill a god!" "You're insane!" Darren ran at Roln, crystal covering his arms, turning his hands into claws. Roln narrowed his eyes. "You dare speak to your new god with such insolence? You need to remember your place!" Darren was suddenly slammed into the wall again. What? He struggled to pushe himself away, but he might as well have tried to move a mountain. Steel wrapped around his arms and legs, binding him completely. He clenched his fists and slammed them into the wall. Crystal blades shot out and siced through his restraints. Without pause he flattened his palms against the wall. "Skewer him!" Dozens of crystal spikes erupted from the wall and shot at Roln. He pushed off it with a blast of wind and caught the side of one of the spikes, covering his arms in flames before flinging the fire at his father. Roln didn't even bother to move out of the way. He whipped his arm at the boy and a blade of wind flew at him. The fire blew out and the crystals shattered. Darren let go of the crystal he was clinging to and dropped to the ground, the blade of wind barely missing his head. Before he reached the floor, a pillar of earth shot out of it and slammed into him. He was sent flying into the air, the wind knocked out of him. What?! Roln doesn't have control over that Element! HE barely had tiime to register this when a blast of fire connected with his back. He shouted with pain, feeling the flames searing his skin. A wave of water hit him in the back and slammed him down into the ground. He heard Roln snap his fingers, then a roar of thunder erupted above him and a bolt of lightning crashed into him. Darren's mind went blank as his father continued to electrocute him. He was vaguely aware that the crystal sealing his wounds had shattered. Everything went black for a few seconds. When his mind kicked back into action he felt his already blood soaked shirt grow heavy as more blood poured out of him. He forced himself to stand but his knees almost gave out. Roln looked at his own hands curiously. "It appears I need more practice. Those were more powerful that I intended. But the power... It's amazing! More, I need more!" He noticed that Darren was once again on his feet. "You don't know when to quit. Look at yourself, you can barely stand. What hope do you think you have?" "I... can't lose here...." Darren panted, sweat covering his body. His breath was shallow. "I... refuse... to lose..." Roln pointed at him and a wave of pressure forced Darren to his knees. "You have been a thorn in my side for too long!" Darren grunted and struggled against the pressure to get to his feet. "I won't... let you beat me... I'll...-" Roln narrowed his eyes. "Kneel before me!" Lightning rained down on his son, knocking him down again. Darren grunted but forced himself to try and ignore the pain. He got back to his feet and staggered towards Roln, weak flames forming around his fingers. Roln's eyes fell to the fire and he pointed at it. "Give me your power!" he said. Darren stared as his flames grew in intensity then flew into Roln's outstretched hand, sinking into his open palms. He tried to form the fire again, but found he couldn't. Roln had absorbed his Element! "More...." Roln said hungrily. Darren stumbled, catching himself with his wind. Again, Roln stretched out his palm, and again Darren's Element was stolen from him. I need to end this fast. I need to take him by surprise and shut off my Element as soon as I use it! Darren staggered again and tried to throw a shard of crystal at his father's neck, but it crumbled to dust before it even left his hand. D-dammit.. I'm too weak!

"What are you doing?! I want more of your power!" Roln shouted and shot shards of diamond at Darren. Darren raised his right hand and let the diamonds bounce harmlessly off of it. "I guess... I should thank you.... for the arm..." he taunted. "Comes in handy... when fighting maniacs..." Roln glared at his son and pointed at the arm, clenching his fist. Darren's synthetic arm burst apart. He cried out in agony and fell to the floor, clutching his shoulder. Blood fell out of his wound. No... Roln walked over to him and stood above him, looking down at his son in disgust. "It's over." He held his arm out, sparks of electricity crackled over his hand. "First I'm going to absorb all of your powers, then you can join your mother and broth-." He stopped midword. The sparks vanished. He looked down at his chest. A crystal sword was impaled there. He looked back to Darren who held the sword in his hand. "How about you... go to hell... instead..." he said weakly. His arm dropped, leaving the blade stuck in Roln's chest. His vision went blurry. Roln reached to pull the sword out when he felt one of his lungs burst. What?! He coughed up blood. His legs broke and he fell backwards onto the floor. His arms began to spark; his body felt like it was burning from the inside while his skin felt like it was freezing over. He tried to move but diamond and steel wrapped around him, binding him to the ground. It felt like every Element he now had power over was going berserk. What is this? Is this the result of control over Infinitia? "No! I can't die! I'm a god! I'm a god! I'm a- AAAAUUGGH!!" Roln cried out in agony as his body burnt to ash from the inside out. Darren watched this event take place. He found no pity for his father. He'll burn in Hell still believing he's a god... His body started to feel light. A light rose up out of the ashed of his father. What is that? Infinitia? The light shone brightly and Darren had to close his eyes. It felt... Warm... Is this what dying actually feels like? It's different from my fight with Arrel. I don't feel any pain... Hey, damn Defective. Auren?! Who else? Seems like you beat him after all. I had my doubts. Heh... So, do you have any regrets? Regrets? Just one... I never got to tell Aya "I'm sorry." You hopeless fool.. What lame last words. Darren chuckled. Go to hell. Can't, I'm stuck with you. Besides didn't you have a promise you had to keep? Yeah, but I can't keep it now. I can't even feel anything. I think we lost too much blood... Sure, blame it all on me. I never said- You were thinking it. Am I going to have to listen to you compain and lecture me for eternity? Worst. Afterlife. Ever. Oh shut up. Who said you were dead anyway? Well you're here. Arrel shattered you, remember? And I told you years ago, I am you. You can't get rid of me that easily you defective Elementalist. a**, Darren chuckled again. Do you think everyone's okay? The reactor should have blown by now. Think they escaped? Like I care. Just answer the damn question. Fine. They should have made it out, okay? Yeesh. Pain in my a**, that's what you are. Darren said nothing. Roln and Arrel were gone, Infinitia was destroyed. All in all, he'd had a good run. He supposed, knowing that Roln couldn't hurt anyone anymore, and that the facility was destroyed, he could live with that, so to speak. Hey, you feel that? Feel what? Darren didn't understand what Auren could be talking about. How could he feel anything? He was de- What... Wind? You feel it? Why can we feel wind? Not dead? How? We don't heal that fast, and even if we did, the facility should have blown us to pieces. Well we didn't did we? Stop being an a**. I'm stating a fact. Unless you care to explain how a dead guy could be breathing. Darren had just noticed that too. But... How? Infinitia maybe? Maybe, but again, how? The Elf then. Not sure. But- "-if so then- huh?" Darren's eyes were open, but he didn't remember opening them. He looked around. He was in a white room like the one he saw his mother in, but there were no doors or windows, just white walls. It looked empty. "Yo." Darren whirled around and stared. Standing in front of him was... another him? "You look surprised. Can't say I blame you." "A-Auren?" The other Darren brought his hand to his head in a mock salute. "Feels weird seeing you." "Where are we?" "Big empty place, probably your head." "Funny." The other Darren- Auren- shrugged. "I thought it was."
