Iris woke up to the sounds of electrical beeping and rhythmic breathing from the oxygen apparatus. She looked out of the window that she could see. It was Christmas and she was spending it by her comatose Best Friend's side. She has really hoped that it was just a dream. That Vern didn't try to commit suicide. Vern didn't cut himself and try to overdose. That she didn't get a text about Vern from Oliver that ended her date early. That didn't kiss Silvano while envisioning Marco.

But seeing Oliver sleeping, finally, at Vern's other side prove that everything had indeed happened. Vern tried to commit suicide by cutting himself and overdosing. Oliver had indeed texted her the details and she has indeed kissed Silvano and she saw Marco's face when she did so.

She lifted her head to see Vern, having a machine breath for him and IVs running through him. She started to tear up but she didn't breakdown and cry like last night. Her eyes were still puffy from her night of crying and praying. The doctor and nurses took pity on their situation and allowed them to stay past the visiting hours.

She yawned and looked at Oliver. He knew that this was harder on the older boy than it was on her. She needed to be a support for Oliver until Vern awaken and for Vern so he could wake up. She grabbed his hand and held it hers.

If she could trade places, she would do in half a heartbeat.

User ImageOliver stirred, unable to sleep in the cold, sterile environment around him. Or perhaps it was Vern that he couldn't sleep? He was too tired to tell either way, having had gone without sleeping for a good twenty-four hours before he literally fell face first into Vern's bed in exhaustion. He had undoubtedly gone longer periods without sleep before, but the mental exhaustion had a good tole on him. Having broken up with Gavin, and had his best friend nearly kill themselves within the span of two or three days was too much.

That they were alive right now though, that was enough a blessing for the moment. It wasn't the ideal Christmas, but it was one he could be thankful for. Oliver had also welcomed a Natu into the world just hours earlier. Thinking back to when he had heard the voice back in his hotel – that was likely the small Pokemon communicating to him from inside it's egg. If it was though, it wasn't going to do it again anytime soon – Oliver had tried psychically communicating with it several times earlier to pass the time – each time without even the slightest success.

Looking to the small Flying-type which rested on top of his bag in the corner of the room, he sighed. If it hadn't been for them, Vern probably would have have died.

Raising his head and sitting upright in his chair once more, he glanced over at Iris. He felt bad, having been so ignorant to Vern lately. Iris had been there for him time, and time again, though. It almost made him feel as though he didn't deserve to be at this bedside right now, with his friend. Could he even call himself a friend right now, though? Maybe none of this would have happened if he;d kept a closer eye on them – if he'd pulled his head out of his a** long enough to swallow his pride and make up with Vern after all their feuds.

Oliver let himself flop back into the bed, mindful not to hit one of the many wires and tubes coming out of the boy. So tired as he was, he knew sleep would elude him. “Any changes?” He asked monotonously.

It had taken Briana far too long to find out what had happened. But it was not all her fault. First she had been away, walking to the hotel with Gavin when the ambulance came and took Vern away. Second, it was not until midnight she had noticed people were missing, like Iris and Vern. Finally she had spoken to Sophie about what was going on and all the girl could tell her was that while she was out someone had been rushed off. Briana had finally gotten worried enough about Iris not returning to the hotel that she had texted her. That was when she found out. Horrified Briana had raced out of the hotel carrying her bag on shoulder, Eevee running along at her side. That had not happened till first thing in the morning. When Briana had made it to the hospital she had had to beg to be shown to Vern's room. There were already 2 people there and visiters were not really allowed. After Briana had almost burst into tears a kind nurse led Briana to a coffee pot and then to Vern's room.
Briana waited half a tick outside of the door to Vern's room. She wanted to go in but was terrified by what she was going to see. She had no idea why he had been taken to the hospital this time, all she knew was that Iris had said that Vern was here. Finally Briana took a deep breath and stepped into the room. "Hey..." Briana said. It was no surprise to her that Oliver was here with Iris watching over Vern. It made the most sense after all. Briana held up her hands showing that she had two extra cups of hot coffee with her from the coffee pot the nurse had taken her to, "I brought coffee." It was all she could say. This was the worse thing that could have ever have happened.

With a solemn look to her face, the nurse came into the emergency care room. Despite all of their efforts, the best any of them there at the pokemon center had been able to do was stitch up the boy's arms and wrist, and hook him up to life support. To be honest, it was amazing that he'd even managed to survive the night given how much damage he'd done to himself. Still, this was a hard thing to tell them. "Hello?" She greeted the two greenheaded teenagers, smiling at them though it was obvious it was only for the sake of being remotely pleasant in a dreary situation. Nearby, the machine beeped slowly, indicating that a pulse did still exist, and the boy was still alive yes, but for how much longer? "I'm truly sorry to inform you of this, but, Vern here... He did alot of damage to his system... There is just simply nothing we can do here to help him..." This was when she noticed another girl, someone whom she presumed was a friend of the comatized boy. By the looks of it, she didn't know what exactly had happened, only that her friend was here.

Still the doctor breathed in and finished what she had to say, "And, the likelihood of lasting much longer is very slim..."

"I'm terribly sorry..."

Iris looked at Oliver as he asked about changes. The boy looked tried and very upset. She worried if part of him had put blame on himself for this. She hoped he didn't. They both knew that Vern had some demons in his closet. They just didn't know how dark and strong they were. If there was anyone that could be blamed, it would that awful man that made Vern's life hell because he was a bigot and a bully. She feared for Vern and his mother. She needed to call her parents and tell to get his mother to their home and kept her husband away. If anything happened to Vern, though she prayed that wouldn't come to pass, she would make sure that his mother was taken care of. That man would not claim another life. She won't allow it.

She sighed at Oliver and shook her head sadly. Nothing has changed since the night before. He was still touch and go. The way the doctors and nurses looked at them, it was like they knew something morbid that they didn't know or didn't want to believe.

Suddenly, the door opened. Iris turned, thinking it was a doctor or nurse. Instead it was Briana with coffee. She had text the girl after she was texted when she didn't returned after her date. It was nice to know that people worried about her. But at the moment, her concern was for Vern. Iris looked at the coffee that Briana offered them.

She smiled as best as she could. It was still Christmas morning. "Good Bri." She said, her voice soft and not going above half her normal volume. "Thanks for the coffee. Merry Christmas."

After Briana was the doctor. The look on her face was not hopeful at all. As the woman spoke, she held onto Vern's hand. The more the woman spoke, the more she was shaking. The chair was squeaking as she tried to contain herself. Her eyes betrayed her grief. On this day, she could be losing her best friend. Her first friend she made when she got to the school. The one she came to when she has boy problems with Marco or question and just someone that made her laugh and be happy even when he was hurting on the inside. She felt the hot eyes rolling down her eyes. Her forehead pressed on his hand pressed between her hands.

She wanted to believe that the doctor was wrong. That Vern was resilient enough to pull through. He had to. He had to prove his father wrong.

User ImageOliver sighed, getting back up once more. Nothing had changed for a day...? Oliver wasn't a doctor, nor did he have any medical experience whatsoever, but that couldn't be good.

It was then that the door opened that Oliver shot around, expecting to see a nurse. He had hundreds of questions to ask them, and in reality, was likely less than reasonable in his current state. Instead however, Brianna came into the room, and handed both him and Iris a coffee. Though left without answers he wanted from the nurse, he was equally happy with a coffee for time time being. He probably looked like hell – he sure felt like it, after all. This coffee was a God-send right about now.

Thanks a ton.” He spoke, taking a large sip. He'd have to make this up to her some day.

It was then that a woman came in, whether or not they were a doctor, he did not know, nor care, and delivered to him news that shredded his hearts into bits. He'd really have to just sit here and watch as his friend rotted away? He'd have to go on without saying goodbye? Never hear them speak again, or sing... There was nothing they could do? That he could do? He wouldn't be able to tell them about Gavin, or tell them how he really felt about them...

Oliver turned back to Vern with a vacant stare, unable to keep up with his own feelings and thoughts. He'd have been crying, but it seemed like the river of tears that had been flowing earlier had ran dry. He would never have thought, until today, that he would have wished he could cry. To simply drown in his own sobbing and momentarily escape this hell would have been a blessing.

Briana nodded simply at Oliver and Iris, "Yeah Merry Christmas." Now was not the time to remind Iris that she did not celebrate the holiday however. Briana's thoughts were only on Vern now. "What..." She was about to ask them what happened when a nurse, or whatever she was, stepped into the room. That was when Briana's world caved in.
"What do you mean he is not likely to last longer? What are you talking about? What happened? Why is Vern like this?" Briana was somewhere between crying and shouting. Since she had walked into the room all she had seen were two people sitting in chairs around Vern, all of whom looked like they were in a living hell. And all those machines strapped around Vern. What had happened to him? Why was he like this? This was becoming too overwhelming. Vern was so happy, even when he was in pain. What had caused him to do this? And why couldn't the doctors do anything for him.
Finally Briana closed her eyes and began to cry, like she was a little girl again. Her parents were trapped in Goldenrod. Team Rocket was taking over the world. And one of her closest friends was lying in a hospital bed with wires and needles all over his body. For no real reason Briana pulled out the egg that she found over the summer and hugged it. "I wish..." Briana began, not sure were she was going with this. "I wish..." The egg began to glow in her arms. Eevee looked up at her trainer and the egg. "I wish there was a way to save Vern. I wish that he would get better and everything would be alright..." The egg began to glow so brightly that even through her lidded eyes Briana could see it's light. "I WISH THAT VERN LIVES LONGER AND IS SAVED FROM THIS HELL!" Finally Briana opened her eyes and saw that her egg was glowing. The line, the crack that Briana had always thought was the source of the reason why it did not hatch opened and revealed an eye. Briana gasped and nearly dropped the egg.
After what seemed like forever the egg stopped glowing and showed itself in it's true form. Jirachi.

The nurse felt terrible for having to deliver the news like this, but what else could they do? By the time they'd gotten him to the ER, the boy had already suffered severe blood lose from not only his arms, but the injury that he sustained on his head too. That wasn't including however long the drugs he'd intaken were sitting there in his system. Nearby, the heart-rate monitor beeped at a somewhat slow, irregular pace, but really nothing had changed. The boy's face was red from a fever, and every so often in the night his body had gone into an all-out spazz attack. It was heart-wrenching to watch the boy's body just slowly collapse like that, but again... There was nothing they else they could do.

The third girl, whom the greenhead -Iris- seemed to refer to as Bri, handed each of them some coffee. Sighing, the nurse went over and checked the bandage that they had against his head, an injury that they figured he must've sustained as he passed out. Done with that, she said nothing as the "Bri" girl cried out a wish to save her friend. The greenheaded male that had found the boy, seemed to be the most hurt by it all, even if he had the least reaction. She went to check on the stitches they'd done over the cuts on his forearms and wrists, making sure that the wounds were at least healing well though... even if he did miraculously survive, he'd have six ugly scars for the rest of his life.

She was about to leave again, having finished up in the checking up on the comatosed boy, when a spasm shot through his unconscious body, and he was forced into another seizure. Her eyes widened, and she was over by the boy's side again to make sure that the wires didn't get ripped out of him. She couldn't hold him done, or restrain him, only wait for it to pass before she could go in and check his airways to make sure that he was still breathing. When everything checked out OK, she started writing down on a piece of paper things related to the patient's health. "Again, I wish there was something else I could do for him." She told them solemnly, staring at the boy who lay unconscious. With that, she left momentarily.

Iris looked at Briana, she has wished for the same things. She was crying when she watched the egg that Briana held began to glow. She looked in shock as it hatched into a Jirachi. A Pokemon known for making wishes come true.

"Bri... Your egg... It..." Suddenly her attention was brought to Vern convulsing. She didn't move out of shock and held onto his hand as she made sure the IV didn't come out of the hand she held onto. When it was over, she breathing heavily. The shock slowly disappearing as the woman repeated how she wished there was something she ccould do.

"What does he need?" Iris asked, "Blood? I'm O negative... What does he need, I'll give it. Please, I can't leave here without knowing I did everything I could."

She looked at the woman desperately. Even if she didn't fully understand her own words, she wanted to it. If Vern could live, she would do it.

"I wish he could pull through.. He has so much life in him, this can't be it. Not for him. Please this can't be it for him. I don't want his story to end like this."

The nurse sighed, coming back in only to be asked about doning blood. It was amazing, to see such love come from these kids towards their dying friend, but alas blood lose was actually not the issue. "My dear, blood lose is not the issue. The toxins that Vern injected into his system are what's going to kill him. If it'll make you feel better, then we can do a blood transplant, but in the end it really won't do much good." She was forced to look the girl in the eyes when she said this, "Amitriptyline, one of the drugs he overdosed on, is highly toxic and even just the slightest overdose on them will result in vomitting, hallucinations, seizures, low blood pressure, and loss of life, to include a few."

"... It's Christmas, why don't you all go out and have fun with your other friends?" The nurse suggested with a weak smile, not as a way to kick them out, but to hopefully try and brighten the dreary situation.

User ImageOli perked up a bit as Brianna's Jirachi hatched from it's egg. He'd heard about it in folklore and the like, and apparently it was an extraordinarily rare, and sought after Pokemon, even while considering other legendaries. It hardly cheered him up however, and hearing the nurse continually remind them all of the grim situation wasn't doing too much for his mood either. She might as well have said it – that his best friend was going to die. It was kind that she wanted to be soft with the lot of them, but at this point, he would have honestly been more content with her being blunt.

It wasn't at all that he wanted to hear that, though. Racing through his head, over and over, were prayers to whatever, or whoever might hear them to make his friend better. Ideas as to what he'd tell Vern if they woke up. What they'd go do, and the tough times they'd undoubtedly help each other through.

As the nurse went on lecturing Iris about the truly dire state Vern was in, Oliver went back to staring at Vern; his elbows on the bed, and his head cupped in his hands. “I am with my friends. Fun or not, this is where we need to be.” He explained, his voice monotonous and unreadable. He wasn't cross with her, but he was tired of hearing her go on about the bleak reality they were faced with. The fact that his eyelids were literally closing on him did no good in making him sound enthusiastic, either. “If something happened, and I wasn't here for him, I'd never forgive myself, and neither would these guys.” He motioned to Bri and Iris, knowing fully well that their presence here right now made this all too true.

Come on, you idiot... Wake up...” He whispered, his voice pleading.

Iris looked at the woman. She knew that woman was just trying to help them in this trouble time but she didn't want to have fun knowing that Vern could have very well die while as she 'having fun.' At this end, Zoey was outside of her Pokemon, not at all her happy and cheery self as she tried to comfort her friends.

Iris shook her head, hearing also that her blood wouldn't helpful. Rather it was his overdose that was doing him. She looked at the woman.

"This drug he took, isn't there a way, that- I don't know- counterbalance the toxicity of this Amitrip..." She tried to pronounce the drug's name. "I mean if it's toxic there has to be some way to neutralize it."

She looked at the woman with hopeful eyes. She had been poisoned and she was given an antidote to help her. Surely there had a way somehow. "What about Pokemon... Heal Pulse, Heal Bell... There has to be something someone can do."

She looked at Vern. She remember when he had nightmares, she sung to him. At the moment, it was the one thing she felt she could do for him.

Let it all out, Let it all out
You don’t have to pretend to be tough
The flowers somebody scribbled on the wall are trembling

Nobody knows what makes them unique
As you travel this long, long road you’ll lose some things and pick some up
Though there’ll be days when you suddenly feel lonely and just want to cry

She started to sing. She didn't know what else to do.

Briana slumped into a chair and stared at Iris and then her new pokemon. Jirachi... the wish granted. That is what Lilith had always called it in class. Eevee jumped into Briana's lap and stared at Briana and the new Jirachi. The legendary pokemon looked at the girl holding her then at the boy on the bed. Finally Briana found her voice and muttered "It's no fun without Vern. Besides, he will wake up." Briana looked up suddenly, a faint smile on her cheeks despite her eyes being red and now swollen from tears.
Briana held Jirachi close to her chest and turned it around so that it could look at Vern with all three of it's eyes. The one on it's stomach remained closed. "I don't normally believe that if you wish for something it will come true... But Jirachi here... Well... If it hatched then something must have heard my wish right? Besides I faith that the doctors can do something. And Vern is stronger then this. He can fight it. He.. he has already fought so hard... This can't be the thing that stops him..." She had to believe that Vern was stronger than this. He fought a father that Briana would now go ahead and personally kill for Vern's sake. After everything they had been through this yes already. Suddenly a thought flashed in Briana's mind, she turned to Oliver. "Where's Rose?" She asked. The Raikou might be able to wake him. She could use a thunder attack and rest his heart or something. There had to be a way to bring Vern back.

She couldn't really argue with that the loyalty the three of them had for their dying friend. It was heartwarming, even, to know that the kid had such good friends; it's a shame he couldn't have known that earlier. "I understand." Once again, the Iris girl just didn't quite understand what it meant for the drugs to be toxic. She sighed a little and merely shook her head at the girl, really not wanting to explain why there weren't 'antidotes' to the things that he'd consumed. By the time the boy had arrived at the Center, the medications had already been absorbed into his system... With a frown, she left the room again as the girl started to sing.

Meanwhile...

Bark! Bark! Bark! Rose was scratching at the front door to the pokemon center, Rae, Balto, and Valene there too. Kouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu......? She whined, barking some more, trying to get in. Upset that no one was letting her in to see her human, who she knew was there, her butt plopped to the ground with a soft thud. Raaaaiiiii...Koooouuuu? Next to her, the other three all stared up at the front of the building, wanting to get in too.

* * *

A black fog swirled around him, voices echoing to him. What were they saying? He didn't know. What did they want? They wouldn't tell. "Where am I?" He shouted out to the voices in his head... Why was everything so warm? Some of the voices sounded familiar, like distant memories long since forgotten... A figure stood infront of him, a tall, hulking man with thick blond hair, and bright blue eyes that could've pierced through anything.

He stepped back, his entire body shaking with fright. Those voices came again, and he covered his ears to try and block them out, block out the hurtful things that they were telling him. The blond-haired man towered above him, almost a whole foot taller, glaring down at him in prejudice.
"Dad... Whatever it was... I didn't do it!" He defended himself right away, trying to look at him in the eyes, but his own fear got the better of him and he averted his eyes to the blackness beneath him. His dad opened his mouth to say something, and instead an icy roar came out instead, and his father's body morphed into that of Kyurem, fangs outstretched to devour him...

In the waking world, Vern's body was now tossing back and forth in a nightmare only he could hope to understand. The heart rate machine started to go out of control, and his unconscious self started to spasm once again.

"Dad please, it's not my fault!" He begged, cried out as he felt every single strike come down onto him. They all felt so familiar... maybe it's because he was so used to it by now... or maybe they were his memories haunting him, reminding him of it all. He didn't move, he didn't cry, he didn't even flinch; that didn't mean he didn't want to. He wanted so badly to just turn and run, but he couldn't, something was keeping him standing there. Motionless, as one after another the blows came down onto him.

There was music now playing. It wasn't just any music, it was the sounds of a Saxophone. "Vern... I'm so sorry, but your friend... Ryan, the Gomez's... They... They perished in a fire last night, that destroyed their entire home." Once more, another strike came down onto him, and his subconsious body fell to the floor, bruised and badly beaten. Or was it really just his body that was beaten? No, it wasn't just that, it was his soul too... Wherever it was, or whatever was left of it.

"You're a disgrace to me, and the entire family. You're nothing, worthless, a waste of space and oxygen. I'm ashamed to call you my flesh and blood. From this day forward, I will have nothing to do with the likes of you, an abomination to the human race; someone who is no longer my son."
