The Origin of TopHatDog

In the suburban homes of downstate New York, a family on the downslope packs their bags while the father of the family signs the last of the forums needed to officialize the foreclosure of their house. For the last three months things have gone from bad to worse for the Reid family, the father lost both of his jobs to layoffs, the mother has fallen into a deep depression for the recent death of her mother, and their two sons try the best they can to comfort the two parents while ending their forth grade year. The only one who could could rest easy is their dog, Spankey, but even he felt the family's strife. That day was the fifth mortgage payment missed for the house, and the family prepared for their new life in the big city. The only problem, the apartment complex did not allow pets.. Realizing this the family planned on sneaking their little white dog into their apartment, as the last good thing in their lives they would do anything to keep.

On the drive to the city the family kept the radio loud with Here Comes the Sun playing. The two sons pet their dog, fearing they wouldn't be able to keep up he charade. How would they walk him? Give him exercise? Would he like it being cooped up in the apartment, as small as he may be. The thought of this plagued the two sons minds, while the dog enjoyed being pet. Suddenly on the radio, the emergency broadcast alert loudly beep, causing the dog to whimper and snug into one of the boys shirts. A loud message followed the beeping "In the gardens of Manhattan, a fight between the Avengers and The Brotherhood is currently reaching dangerous proportions. Citizens are advised evacuate the island so the Avengers can handle the mutants properly. That is all" The two sons eyes light up at the sound of the Avengers, while the parents shoot a concerned look at each other
"Now boys, you know to stay clear of those Avengers! You'll only get in the way" The two sons nod and pet their dog again, calming him down from the emergency beeping.

Finally, the family reaches their new home, all of them underwhelmed by the looks of the outside. Broken windows, angry shouting, if anything to depress the family further it would be how their new home looked like crap. With a sigh and a tear, the family brings their things up the several flights of stairs to their apartment, over and over and over again. Then with all their things in the apartment they all sit and look at their boxes with sadness. From within one of the boxes pops out Spanky, panting happily at the sight of his new home. He jumps down carefully and walks around, sniffing at everything and laying down in the corner. but while the little dog got adjusted, the family sits depressed, nearly to the point of tears, until the father stands up
"Listen gang.. How about we go out and see what kind of restaurants New York City has to offer, eh? Come on" The two sons perk up with a slight bit of hope while the mother shrugs and follows them out the door. Before closing the mother grabs a leash and a box and puts Spanky in the box
"Can't leave you here alone..." She muttered as he left the apartment while shutting the door behind her. With a weak sense of happiness the family walk down the street while the dog follows along, all of them unaware of the recent emergency broadcast "The fight between the Avengers and The Brotherhood has moved to the inner city, citizens are advised to evacuate until further notice. That is all" Unaware, like several others around them, the family walks along, moving closer and closer to the fight with every block passed. Finally, they stop at the sight of Magneto and Toad taking on Iron Man and Thor, both too preoccupied to observe the people or things around them. Magneto hurls Iron Man toward the family, crushing the father and mother. Seeing an opportunity to take down Iron Man, Magneto takes control of a manhole cover and flings them the same way, decapitating the two boys. Scared and heart broken, the dog walks up to one of the boys and nudges his arm, trying to get him up. Seeing his attempts were not working, the dog whimpers and nuzzles himself under the arm of the dead boy

Meanwhile, Mystique watches the dog and turns her head, then morphs into the mother that was just hit and walks toward the dog attempting to blend in. From above Dr.Strange focus' his magic to deal with Mystique and her abilities. The disguised mutant attempts to pick up the dog, who smells her and immediately growls at her
"Come here precious!" She says, annoyed, causing the dog to walk back toward a magic shop. A block away in a building, a Iron Man blasts an energy beam at Magneto, causing a window to shatter from the air distortion and blowing a little top hat and monocle down onto the dog. Mystique narrows her eyes and lunges toward the dog and tries to grab it, causing Dr. Strange to react and blast her and the dog with a shot of magic. Suddenly Mystique turns back into her original form and drops the dog, who whimpered from the pain of the blast and lays on the street. Mystique looks up at strange and glares at him "THAT ALL YOU GOT?" She bluffs, then runs and look for cover. Dr. Strange chases after her while everyone else moves the fight to a different part of the city, while the dog lays in the street with its little top hat and monocle.

A few hours later, people start to come back to the streets, while city workers clean up the damage. Outside the magic shop a dogcatcher stands over the sleeping top hat dog, unsure if it has sustained any internal injuries. As he bends down to pick him up, the dog awakens and quickly gets up. The dogcatcher jumps back and takes out his restraining wand
"Easy there, precious.." The sound of that name causes the dog to growl in anger. The sight of the impostor mother plagued the dogs mind, getting it angry. Finally, the dog shakes his head and quickly morphs into a pit bull with a fitted top hat and monocle , then barks at the dogcatcher who runs at the sight of a transforming dog. The dog growls for a few seconds more and morphs back into his original form. He looks around at all the people staring at him and runs off, unaware that someone was watching over him.

The dog runs into an ally and takes cover behind a trashcan, then lays down and sulks. In its mind he could see his family. His two masters who took care of him, fed him, played with him. Then the sight of them all slaughtered, and him nuzzling with the dead boy. The overwhelming visions and memories made the dog whimper as he tried to sleep off the sadness. From outside of the ally, a figure with a leather jacket and pointy hair walks into the ally "Where could it be..." He mutters to himself. He looks behind the trash and spots him, then chuckles at the little top hat and monocle on him "How rediculous.." He mutters, then picks him up and walks off.

An hour later, the dog wakes up in a new surrounding, a very big and strange room with wires and machines. He looks around frantically and spots the man who picked him up, along with several other strange people with white hair and strange glasses. They all seemed to be talking to a strange bald man in a wheelchair who smiled at the dog. The dog growls, frightened for his life, and morphs again into a rottweiler with a fitted top hat and monocle. The three surrounding the bald man perk up while the bald man just smiles. Suddenly the dog could hear a voice "Its alright.. You are safe here.." Suddenly feeling comfortable, the dog slowly stops growling and morphs back into his little white original form. He jumps down from the table he was on and jumps up on the bald mans lap, who pets him gently. With all the terrible events that had taken place, the dog whimpers a bit and enjoys the petting he was receiving by the Bald man. Looking down on him, the bald man smiles and looks up at everyone "He has been through allot.. This dog.." The man with pointy hair nods and crosses his arms
"He wouldn't survive long out there.. The MARTY's would probably shoot him on the spot" The women with white hair and the man with weird glasses look at each other, then at the bald man "So.. Are we keeping him or..." The bald man looks up at them "Yes... Like Logan said, he wouldn't be able to survive out there.. Here he can have a life, and perhaps we can figure out the origin of his abilities as well.." He looks down at the dog again, seeing that he was asleep in his lap.

The bald man turns his chair around and wheels down the hall "Logan, I don't supposed you'd object to him staying in your room.." The man with the weird glasses looks at Logan and smirks "You're both animals, you're barely there, its perfect, no?" Logan glares at the man with glasses and scoffs at him
"Bite me, Four eyes" The girl with white hair rolls his eyes at the both of them
"Seriously, Scott? That was dumb even for you..." Scott shrugs and continues down the hall
"Not trying to impress, Storm" They all enter the kitchen and put the dog on the floor, waking him up a little. Logan grabs a bowl and fills it with water, then puts it on the floor for him to drink. The dog excitedly walks to the water bowl and begins to drink, while everyone else continues their conversation

"So Professor, whats up with the hat and moncicle.." Asks Strom while looking at the dog "Its kinda cute but.. Even when he morphs he's wearing a bigger version of that hat.." Logan shakes his head and looks to Storm "He was wearing it when Strange blasted him.. Mystique was holding. You think they're related, Professor?" The professor nods and looks to the dog
"Somehow Strange's magic has given him Mystiques powers.. The hat and monocle must have been fused as well" Logan shakes his head and chuckles
"That.. Makes no sense at all.. but its Dr. Strange, so.." Scott smirks while grabbing a beer from the fridge
"I like it.. He's a Topdog.. or a Dog hat.. Hmm.." The Professor shakes his head and wheels out of the kitchen
"Whatever the case, he has a home here.."

A few weeks later, Logan made a doghouse for the tophatdog so he would stop pissing in his room, and everyone at The School for Gifted Youngsters eventually accepted him as their own. As it clicked in that this was his new home, TopHatDog finally let go of his memories of his deceased family, and had finally gotten what his family wanted him to get. A loving home, and a loving family
