The debate about violent video games such as Mortal Kombat 9, I'm talking not just talking about blood but this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBPnFjtGBuU&feature=related . How much gore is too much gore? Do you think they push the line? Do you think videos today are too violent then old games?

Well there are several issues here I suppose that should be addressed cat_rolleyes

How much gore is too much gore?

The question is as problematic as what it is implying cat_neutral
In the worst Aristotelian sense, the question suggests that, like alcohol, food, etc, that, for gore, there is a level of moderation that should be achieved for it to be acceptable. Therefore, what we should be concerned about is less with regard to the "excessive" amount of gore featured in MK9 and more on what an appropriate amount of gore and what a "deficient" amount of gore would be, because clearly there is certain amount we all need in our lives...

Obviously, nuns aren't doing so well here, given how deficient they probably are with their gore intake cat_xp

As you can see, in my jesting here, one must ask whether this is a question that can actually be answered in the first place.

Nota Bene: I will never own, nor play, MK9 cat_stare

Do you think they push the line?

Like the previous question, this question is also as problematic as what it is asking cat_neutral

On the one hand, it is suggesting that a hypothetical line exists that, when crossed, something is in violation, usually with regard to the harmonious balance that existed before hand (this is typical of most humans vs. Nature arguments). On the other hand, one must ask who determines the placement of the line? G_D? (hu)Man? Public Morality? Nature? SPINOZA!? cat_lol

Of course, we can see that the violation of the former is very dependent upon the authority of latter, meaning that crossing a line for whom, for the sake of argument, only Rush Limbaugh is the sole authority over is clearly a line that will probably be crossed without fear of consequences, because he would draw lines that are inane at best; However, there are certain like-minded people who believe these lines that the likes of Limbaugh have laid out actually have the backing of a much greater authority (usually G_D, but occasionally the Law or Tradition or "Human Nature" or some similar essentialist BS, etc), thereby meaning the violation for crossing the line should be far more grave than it appears and or is treated.

Therefore, one must ask whether a line, or a limit exist, without appealing to an authority that will, ultimately, undermine the legitimacy of the line, or limit, being imposed?

Nota Bene: I'm too Nietzschean to believe in lines, let alone the authorities behind those lines, but I'm also not stupid, which is why games of this nature have absolutely zero appeal to me (and would lead me to chastise others who do enjoy them on grounds that are far more Sartrean than Kantian as one would expect) cat_rolleyes

Do you think videos today are too violent then old games?

Hmm...Alright, how about an example to test what the question is asking?

To begin with, ethically speaking, is an 8-bit game about cowboys shooting Native Americans (for no reason in particular) any more justified than a 3D, high-definition game about cowboys shooting Native Americans (for no reason in particular)?

Furthermore, whereas Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho had hundreds fleeing from the movie theater before the film finished and movies of today, like Saw, garner little reaction other than people remaining in their seats until the film is over... Is the murder that occurs in Psycho any less of a murder than any of the murders that occurred in Saw?

Simply put, is violence, regardless of how it is visually portrayed, any less of what it is simply because of how it is visually portrayed? cat_neutral

Nota Bene: A Horror film from the 80s is no more likely to be on my shelf of movies as any Horror film made today. What does it mean? It means I do not like horror. Do I think the murders committed by Freddie Kruger are any less murderous in comparison to the murders committed by Jigsaw? Certainly not. Would I have either receive the Death Penalty? No, because I do not believe murder can be prevented by further murder.

I hope my above response gives some food for thought to the debate about violent video games, because that was my intention here cat_3nodding
