Penelope is a selkie, a mystical creature known for changing into a sea lion. Selkies are dangerously attractive and have to keep their sea lion skins safe and only human hands can heal their wounds. Two things rule a selkie's life. One is their mate, the one who calls to them even from miles away. For Penelope this takes form in a boy who cried for her when he thought she was a human girl who was going to drown. He cried seven tears for her and she went to him, reassuring him and trying to make him stop crying. They were both young then, about ten years old. The second thing is the ocean. No matter what Penelope must always go back to the salty waves. It's a bond stronger than life, and she left shortly after that night to return to her beloved ocean. It's been seven years since that summer night on the beach with the boy and Penelope has returned to see if he remembers her. If he does, what will he think when she tells him her true identity? Will he believe her? What will happen when she has to leave again?

Penelope stood with her face to the raging sea. Black clouds filled the sky, rain pelting down as white light split the air around her. But for Penelope, the storm brought no fear, only excitement. She watched as the waves reached higher, grew faster in their race to the beach. Even as a child, Penelope knew these waves held little danger for her. So with that certainty in her heart and adventure in her eyes, the young selkie stepped into the churning water. She waded out to her knees, though the waves brought the water up to her hips before the water sunk back in anticipation for the next wave. She paused there, waiting for a wave big enough for her to dive into. She had no idea someone might be watching.

Penelope gasped in surprise as the boy drug her away from her beloved ocean. "Cad a cheapann tú atá tú ag déanamh?" she demanded turning to see his face. When she saw his fear she paused. It was clear that he was trying to save her. Then it struck her. This was the boy who was calling her. Not literally of course, this boy probably had no idea who she was, but Penelope knew that this boy was meant for her. Now out of the water, Penelope turned fully and hugged the boy, she was going to thank him but she realized that he wouldn't understand her. She didn't know english and it wasn't likely that he knew irish. So she touched his cheek lightly and smiled. Even though she knew he wouldn't understand she said "Chara daonna, tá tú dea-intinn ach tá sé in am dom dul. Beidh mé chailleann tú nuair a fhágann mé, agus beidh mé ag smaoineamh ort go minic."

((First thing she says is: What do you think you are doing? and the second one is: Human friend, you have good intentions but it is time for me to go. I will miss you when I leave, and I will think of you often.))

Penelope kissed his forehead and nodded. "Tá a fhios agam bhí eagla ort. Bí cróga anois. I seacht mbliana beidh muid le chéile arís." She told him. Then she paused and tried to remember a phrase she'd been taught before coming here. She frowned then sighed and speaking slowly and doing her best to pronounce the word correctly she said, "Into the sea go seven tears, perchance our seven years." she said and though the words were correct she couldn't hide her accent. Then she pulled away from the boy and turned, running to the salty waters. She leaped into the waves and disappeared from sight.

((I know you were afraid. Be brave now. In seven years we'll be together again.))

Penelope surfaced from the same waters seven years later, the water had calmed and now the sun glowed over the earth in a calm warmth. Penelope climbed out of the water and stretched. The first thing she did after that was to run to a nearby cave and check on her skin. She found it just where she'd hidden it. A tan sea lion pelt was just visible from behind a boulder so close to the cave wall it was almost attached. Penelope smiled and checked her outfit. She'd bought a blue bikini in an attempt to look like a girl in search of a good time at the beach. "Time to party." she said happily, pleased at how far her english had come. Now one would have to really listen to hear the irish lilt to her voice.

Penelope glanced out at the beach. From her cave she could see the life guard's post. She could also see what she was sure was the older version of the boy she'd met so long ago. She wondered if he remembered her. It had been a while and humans tended to forget easily but she sincerely hoped he'd at least slightly think she was familiar. After a moment to gather her courage, Penelope ran out onto the beach where she knew he'd see her. She laughed and did cartwheels as she headed to the water.

Penelope giggled and stopped for the guy as he ran towards her. She waved then put her hands on her hips, smiling. "Hey there, life guard. Am I drowning? Or am I just being graced with your presence?" she asked once he was close enough. Penelope looked Steve over and smiled. He was definitely the boy from the beach. It was amusing that he became a life guard. She wondered if it had anything to do with him trying to save her before.
