I think the best MMORPG I have ever played would have to be City of Heroes and City of Villains the vast customization and powersets make for endless possibilities of what your hero or villain looks like and the amount of archetypes to choose from just make the game more enjoyable.

I played both of those games, but I didn't find them that much fun. When DC univerrrse came out I played that but I reached max level in a week and then it was getting boring.
Aion on the other hand is a visually beautiful game. Max level is 55 and quite harrrd to achieve i'm still only level 38 and I've been playing for 6 months. It's fun, quests in every area, crafting, gathering, and it's a PvEvP envirrronment.
I also love Final Fantasy XI. It's an old MMORPG but still one of my favorrrites. they've added a whole bunch of expansion to the game to make it more fun.
WoW was ok, but it was easy for me to rrreach max level and then after that it wasn't fun anymore it was more like 'work' when i had to start rrraiding and doing the daily's.. ect...

However alot of my friends do play it.

anyone play World of Darkness the table top game or D&D, or DC adventures? these are my favorite RPGs because you get 100% customization and the game will never freeze on you or nothing like that unles the Dungeo master runs out of ideas or just stops
