I'm going to a pre-release this weekend, and have never done it before. The format is sealed, and I don't really know how to play sealed. Also, is there anyone going to one of the pre-releases in Arlington or Fort Worth Texas? It'd be cool to meet a fellow guilds-man/woman there.

For sealed, you open 6 packs and build a 40 card deck. Not exactly difficult.

Same general deck construction guidelines as drafting. 16-18 lands, two colors (unless you have lots of fixing), and creatures as the general win condition (unless your pool is heavy on mill or burn or something). You should value removal more highly, since creature trades just end in a stalemate. Make sure every card helps you win, instead of just helps you not lose. Rares can usually be bomby enough to define your deck, but don't try to force them in. If they don't fit, they don't fit.
Generally drafting gets you a more focused deck, since you're choosing each card. Sealed is a lot more touchy since you get what you get and that's what you have to work with.

In my experience, splashing and bombs are more important in sealed than draft because of the lower level of focus in any given deck.
Creatures being more common than removal in most sets, a stalemate board position is likely so evasion is also important.

just a note so you wont b caught un-aware
most dci sanctioned releases(and pre-release) sealed tournaments, u dont keep whats in the packs you get you have to record what u open then pass the cards to someone else.
but if you pull some insanely valuable foil mythic u can drop and keep what you pulled (something to think about)

This has never been my experience. Usually you open your pool, list what you got on a form, then pass the cards and the form to someone else to check. I usually play at comic shop prereleases, but even at bigger ones I kept what I opened.

Another helpful hint for Mtg events.... B very careful about phase order and make sure you do everything in the correct order last ptq i missed out placing top 8 because i drew before i did splinterfright's ability, the other guy called a judge on it and i ended up with an automatic game loss =[

There's a lot more at stake at a PTQ so they take things more seriously. And don't get too hung up about making perfectly technical plays at a prerelease. If you miss an upkeep trigger, your opponent will probably be cool with doing it after the draw. If he calls a judge for it, he's a tool. I hate people who turn casual tournaments into SRSBSNS

I went to the dark ascension prerelease and we got to keep all of our cards. Even winning four extra packs myself. But that was the first time i've ever done anything like that. It was fun though. If i would have won my last match i would have taken fifth or sixth. Ended up at 13 or 14 haha
Actually it was really fun. I am in SC so i went to boardwalk. And they let an over hyper active shop employee rip up a pack just because she could, and she pulled a Sorin and all the guys there cringed in terror as she destroyed the first Sorin to be found.
