Enjoying Intimacy With God

For many of us, having consistent time with God is a noble but elusive goal. We race through life, busy with our work, relationships, volunteering, while our spiritual life is often at the bottom of our to-do lists. We picture quiet time with God as an unavoidable duty, a mandatory time out, a failed assignment, a ritual, even an impossible task. The magic formula - pray, read, journal, repeat - seems easy enough. But we settle for hit or miss, emphasis on miss.

Yet God invites you to enjoy intimacy with him every day. The heaven sent invitation reads simply "Come to me" ( See Matthew 11:28 ). Even if you are spiritually starving and seriously underdressed, God nevertheless beckons you to an elegant, reserved table for two. This is a place where you can settle into your chair late and bedraggled and still hear, "Welcome! I'm so glad you're here."

If you're ready to accept God's invitation, remember the following:

~TODAY. That's all you can focus on. you can have time with God today. Don't make empty promises about tomorrow's faithfulness. Today's faithfulness gives you a good change for tomorrow's success.

~PACKING LIGHT. Bring your Bible, a pen, a journal and a cup of coffee (or any other drink you prefer). Don't feel obligated to lug around a dense commentary or a dozen extra resources.

~AMBIENCE. Choose a quiet spot, if possible meet God in the same special place each time - make it your spot. Find out what time of day is most conducive to your getting away.

~WRITING. journal your prayers and not God's provisions with specific dates. Record what you're learning in the Bible and look for common themes. Look back at what you've written so you can thank him for his faithfulness.

~SHORT ACCOUNTS. If you miss a day (or two or three), don't quit coming altogether. don't allow yourself to get stuck on feeling guilty.

~FASTING. Fasting brings focus to your time together and a heightened sensitivity to what your dinner Companion is saying.

~TIMING. Sometimes the table for two is set for a long, enjoyable meal. Sometimes there are to-go boxes waiting. Some of your times together are more meaningful than others - not every day will be a spiritual high. God, aware of your season of life, honors your time together regardless of its length.

Thanks for the post =)

Reading the Bible is something we need to dedicate ourselves to daily and I totally agree with that!

I know that I'll read the Bible like every night of the week (for about an hour) an entire week or two and then all of a sudden the next weeks come up and it's once or twice a week and then the week after that I'm like, "Whoa...I haven't picked up my Bible in a few days..." and then ignore it and look over at the Bible like, "I gotta read that. I will tonight!" and then at night, I get distracted.

I am trying to establish an everyday Bible reading between me and God so I can learn more and find peace, confidence, love, and determination through his word.

I noticed that when I don't read my Bible every day I feel "so-so" about life and just get through it. Even though I still pray in the day and think about God, it isn't the same if I don't dive into his word. Spending daily time with God makes a huge impact on life and it will have you feeling good and knowing that you can handle everything thrown at you as long as you have God!
