This is a thread to post and discuss those cards you'd never considered playing or never even heard of before EDH that turned out to totally awesome or fun to play.

To start off: Imp's Mischief.

I pulled one of these in a draft years ago but never found a use for it. Paying life just to get the effect of Swerve seemed sub optimal.

Then I stuck it in my Kiku deck and one of my opponents tapped out to play Time Stretch. Paying 10 life is totally worth it when it gets you 2 extra turns.

Imp's Mischief is playable in EDH because you have a bigger life cushion and because you're much more likely to see powerful spells flying around.

I'm choosing Shattering Pulse. I've not seen anyone else run it in a commander deck, ever. But, I've seen plenty of artifacts. Repeatable artifact destruction at instant speed? It's just been incredibly useful to me, for the same reason that every blue EDH deck plays Capsize.

I haven't played EDH in awhile but I always liked Time Stop, Rhystic Study, Mikokoro, and Final Judgment.

I don't know how "hidden" it is, but Venser's Journal. Hands down the single card responsible for the most games that got crazy out of nowhere.

Along the lines of Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora is a bit more obscure but similar in effect.

Some people prefer it to RS since 4 mana is a cost most people won't bother trying to pay while sometimes the table will decide to just eat the 1 mana surcharge from RS.

Venser's Journal never struck me as all that good but I see lots of people running it. It's a more powerful Ivory Tower + Spellbook for 5 mana. Spellbook is the effect that seems good out of that pair but you can get that effect from Reliquary Tower or Praetor's Counsel without the hassle of trying to keep an artifact in play.

I guess I can see silly lifegain possibilities but lifegain is only useful up to a point when general damage exists.

Still, it gets enough play that I'm sure there's something I'm missing.

Rhystic Study is 3 mana, with no upkeep costs.

In my experience, general damage has never been all that relevant, but maybe that's my playgroup. Most of our games end from burn or lots of creatures.

Also, the overall slower pace of EDH play makes the lifegain from the journal much more relevant, as you're not just gaining 2 or 3 life a turn; you're gaining 8 or 10. (One game had me gaining 50 a turn. I love Arcanis and Azami.) The life gain is far less relevant than the hand size, though. It's just that in a format where 5 mana isn't a big deal, Venser's Journal looks a lot more attractive than Spellbook or Reliquary Tower.

Again, this might just be my playgroup. It seems everyone tends to favor creature removal over artifact removal, and so generals never stick around long enough to get 21 damage in reliably, while artifacts generally stay on the table the whole game.

Many metas don't play nearly enough artifact/enchantment removal. Those permanent types are stupidly good in EDH and, as you've seen, can get really out of hand if there aren't a critical mass of answers at the table.

I still think Reliquary Tower is better, though, simply because it doesn't take up a spell slot and because lands are the hardest permanent to remove of all (unless your meta lacks artifact kill but is full of strip mine effects for some reason.)

On Study vs Remora: There's no reason not to play them both (which is what I do in the one deck that runs either) but on those occasions when I've played or seen played RS it often drew only a few cards total because people chose to pay the extra mana.

Whereas, when I've played Remora it consistently drew more cards per turn, and sometimes more cards total even though it stuck around for fewer turns.

Mostly, though, I'd just run them both.

To contribute another card: Mercadia's Downfall

There are quite a few nonbasic hate cards in red but this is one that your opponents will have to read. It's pretty decent in a deck with a token theme as well. Instant speed pump that will almost always yield +3 or better, much better against certain decks.

At risk of sounding like a horrible player, I've had some crazy stuff happen with Venser's Journal

I had Venser's Journal out, along with Font of Mythos and Howling mine. I then played Rout and then proceeded to play Desolation Angel to destroy all lands.
I got roughly 4-6 turns of healing 10-15 life each turn. As no one managed to destroy Venser's Journal, in the end I was healing over 20 points of life per turn. Due to my massive amount of single creature removal, I ended up just constantly killing opponents commanders every time they were played.
Eventually, I was over 200 health. I then played my Commander at the time, Tariel, and just started bashing face. I won with around 170 health left.
Thank you.

When it's accompanied by global landkill I can see how it would get out of control pretty fast.

Taijuru Preserver. The number of times I've resolved her and had like the Anowon or Thrax player or something be like "she does WHAT?" qualifies her as a format staple to me.

AAAAAHHHHHH ALL TAIJURU PRESERVERS NEED TO BE BURNED.
Along with all Tormod's Crypts and Relic of Progenitus'
I used to play a Thrax deck that focused heavily on recursion... those cards ruined the tactics.

Officially in love with Invoke Prejudice. I played it today, then didn't play any creatures. It was amazing.

I use Reito Lantern to screw with recursion decks. Allows for recursion with tutors, but totally shuts down reanimate/unearth strategies.
