The story depicts a young boy named Shuichi Nitori who wants to be a girl, and his friend Yoshino Takatsuki, a g/irl who wants to be a boy. The series deals with issues such as transsexuality, gender identity, and the beginning of puberty.

They should know that being turned into a boy is not all that's cracked up to be. At least, it wasn't for me. *sighs and walks off*

This was my favorite anime of 2011. The anime skips the first few volumes and starts with everyone being in junior high, but I didn't have any problems with starting a bit later in the story. There are a lot of shows that use crossdressing characters as punchlines or fetish material, so it was really amazing to see an anime take a more serious approach to the topic.
Also, Fantagraphics is releasing the manga in the U.S. Their release is more expensive than usual ($20 each), but the quality of the books more than make up for it. They're larger than usual, hardcover, the color pages are intact, the paper quality is really nice, I didn't notice any typos... I still need to get the second volume, but the first is probably the nicest volume of manga that I own.
