I do own one, I started playing it but I never finish it. I think it depends on what kind of game you like. I think FF13 is more straightforward in comes to story line, compare to other FF games.I mean it has less side missions. The graphics looks really good though. It seems like you are watching a movie... If sequel is necessary...honestly I am not sure sweatdrop

Final Fantasy XIII is a game that is completely linear as you play through the story. There's no side quests or interactions with NPCs. Once you beat the game, you unlock some side quests including treasure hunting and challenging monsters to defeat. It's a good game as long as you care about story telling, but it's not an RPG. It's an adventure game in the truest sense.
As for the sequel? Supposedly it is more of an RPG than the original. It brings in the traditional elements of a Final Fantasy RPG, which is what was heavily criticized about XIII. Story-wise, no the sequel isn't needed. It's mainly there to show what happens after you change the world in the original, and to tell us what happened to the characters after the events.
Personally, I have it pre-ordered on Amazon. $10 store credit ~and~ a boss battle in which I can gain control of the boss for the rest of the game. I'm looking forward to it.
