Original Characters Draw them please? I tip! Pm me ^_^

I don't know about everyone else, but for me this is the hardest part. I was set on a Psychology degree for the longest time. I took all the classes my community college offers, and when it came time to start searching for another school within driving distance that actually offers a degree program in psych, I did the obvious thing and spoke with my adviser.

He told me (in not so many words) that I was wasting my time and money, and that pursuing a degree in psychology was nearly pointless because there aren't many jobs in that field and haven't been for a looong time. Which reminded me that my manager at Cracker Barrel has a degree in Psych and the highest paying job he got was restaurant manager. That aside, I've only been going to school part-time for the last 2 years because of work and family issues, and only taking electives to avoid paying back my student loans just yet as I can't afford to.

Point being that I don't remember much from my Psych classes as it's been about 3 years since I've taken one and I got a C in the last one I took. So my adviser suggested I take Career Explorations, which I did. I learned my personality type and all sorts of info on how to research careers, and I've narrowed it down a bit.

I can't seem to decide between 3 possibilities. I can ignore my adviser and pursue my Psych degree and hope I can get back into it okay and hope to find a career-starting job; I can pursue a business degree and eventually take a huge risk by opening up my own alternate style thrift shop (think goth and punk cloths and music, anime and TV stuff, Wicca and other different books, basically like spencers and hot topic mixed together in thrift shop form); or I can pursue a creative writing degree and hope that my passion for writing helps me do well in class and that I can actually make money with such a degree.

Discuss: any thoughts on my situation, any troubles you might be having in deciding a major or career path, any experience you have with any of the above (schooling or as a job), anythign else relating to majors and planning out your future.

I think by the way you described your two choices, you sound like you have a plan for a business degree. Personally, seeing how the economy is right now, I would be weary about opening a business at the moment. Who knows, maybe when you graduate, the economy will be ALOT better. When we're down, only way to go is up, right?

In regards to a creative writing degree, I think that would be most useful if you just get a degree in English in general. If you decide to go down that path and it doesn't work out as a writer, you can always use that degree to go into teaching/tutoring (K-12 or college/university.)

That was my worry with the business option as well. Not sure I'm ready to take that risk. As for writing I was also slightly considering maybe Journalism, only I like your suggestion better. Thanks for the advice ^_^

Out of the three degree choices you are considering, you are more likely to get work through the business degree. Psychology is a useless degree. Creative writing is pretty close to that. Writing is great and fun and all, but it's an extremely competitive field and most who go through really aren't as good as they think they are. The amount of work is extremely limited.

With a business degree, you learn everything you need to about setting up your own business or aiding in others. You are more likely to get hired for a job with a business degree rather than a degree in psych or writing, even if the work they are hiring you for is not related to any of the above.

I think the business one would be really cool. From what you described you already would have a customer if you ended up having it be both a physical store as well as an online one(for those not in the state or whatnot who cant go to your store). I'm really into that kinda style, and personally Hot Topic to me has begun to go downhill =( I use to love all their stuff, but now it has gotten to where it's all cutesy stuff and VERY VERY little darker stuff.

That is just my opinion though. And if you want I can design some of your graphics such as website design, posters, flyers, any of that(my major is Media Arts/Animation) cuz the Media Arts side of it covers a WIDE variety of media related art. (however for the website thing I would only be able to do the designs/art for it cuz my major doesn't have a coding class..the coding class is only for wed design students at my school).

Anyways good luck with whichever you choose.^^

I don't think Psych is a useless degree. It can be helpful. I'm a psych minor with a major in secondary education and it helps tremendously. It just depends on how you want to use it, and what you get your master's in. Yes, if you go through with Psych, you need to have a Master's. You can go into military relations, education, social work, a private clinic, corrections, all kinds of things with psych if you get a corresponding and focused master's.

Now, as far as creative writing, they're right, it's useless. I'm an English (sec. ed.) major and that's all I can really do with it: teach. Sure, with a master's, I can do a hell of a lot with an English degree, but I need something immediate. It's very competitive, and it won't really get you into journalism because they don't want creative fiction (or non fiction) writing, they want technical and critical writing. Studying of the current, not past literature.

For Business, I would say that is your most practical option. But keep this in mind, if you can't afford a degree now, will you be able to afford one later if you don't like business enough to do it the rest of your life. I prefer to take a risk. Education is not so hot right now, so I probably won't find a job immediately. Nevertheless, when I do, I'm ready to stay.

Don't try to live your back-up plan for life. Plan right and live how you genuinely want. That's my advice.

My major and minor haven't changed a whole lot since I was first looking at things senior year of high school.

I've wanted to be an English teacher since...must've been middle school. So English education, and then picking my minor I just realized theatre was something I didn't want to give up. Music was as well, and so was history, but there are some concepts of learning in the history department I don't like (I hate economics with a passion), and music just doesn't make as nice a combination as English and theatre. So I entered college as a BS in English-Education with a Theatre-Education minor.

Well then I went on vacation to England and I loved it there. Going abroad in general just showed me that I don't want to teach in the United States because I want to get myself out there. So I dropped the education part of my degree and switched over to writing in January.

Honestly, I don't think there's such thing as a useless degree.
Are there jobs that you need specifically an English degree for? No.
But most of the job listings and internships I've looked at don't specify what sort of degree you need, they just want you to have one. These are a pretty wide range of jobs, too. So it's probably best to do what you want to do in college, and take the classes you want to take. Major in what interests you most, because you probably won't get a chance to learn about it again unless you go back to school.
I've been told this by nearly everyone, as soon as I tell them I'm not interested in majoring in a science, or being a lawyer. The way to get a job, they say, is by getting an internship while you're still in school, so then when you graduate, you'l have experience. This is true for publishing, advertising, journalism, graphic design, etc.

Dave Ramsey, a financial guru that has been on all sides of life (even the poorest), recommends that you first get a degree in something that can pay back your loans and get your a job that will keep you and your family fed and the bills paid. Once you have a nice emergency fund established, you can start taking classes to get a degree in something that you want to do but not sure you can find a career in.

That's actually some pretty sound advice. 3nodding
