How exactly do you join the Dark Brotherhood?

Easy silly.

Ask Innkeepers about rumors or wait for a guard to mention it. they'll mention a child in Windhelm is trying to summon the Dark Brotherhood, go find him in hsi house. You'll be given a quest to go murder the Orphanage owner in Riften. Kill her and return to the quet giver.

You'll soon receive a message by courier with a black hand and a foreboding message. Then Sleep.
From there it's easy.
