Because I'm listening to stoof.

To me, it's adding something to the original.
For instance when Muse covered Feelin' Good, they took the Nina Simone version, which added jazz to the original Cy Grant version, and then placed a bit of rock to it, making something AMAZING.

Nina Simone Version
Muse Version

There's a clear evolution of the song, and that is what I look for when I listen to a cover. I want the song to mean something more than what it was when it started.

Another thing I look for is a re-interpretation of a song. The best example of this is Hurt.
When Johnny Cash covered it, he switched the perspective from a young man wondering why the world was so cruel to him to an old man lamenting how cruel he was to the world.

What do you guys look for in a good cover? 3nodding

That being said, I should have some amendments.

Any song written by Bob Dylan and sung by someone else is almost automatically a good cover.
Most Notable: All Along The Watchtower- Jimi Hendrix
Desolation Row- My Chemical Romance.
Knockin' On Heaven's Door- Warren Zevon (Most Haunting Version Evar)

This is more of a personal thing, but uh... Mr. Dylan is possibly one of the greatest poets of our time, but unfortunately, I don't get the passion from his words in his singing.

Hallelujah (written by Leonard Cohen) will be covered by everyone. And I mean everyone. It's a song that conforms to the singer.
However, I will concede that Jeff Buckley has the best version.
Little Wing (written by Jimi Hendrix) also falls under this strange anomaly.

Songs written by Jim Morrison should only be sung by Jim Morrison. Exception: People Are Strange. (Echo and the Bunnymen did a good job there)
However, I hear a cover of Riders on the Storm or The End, and that singer gets on my list.
The reason is because Mr. Morrison's songs are often very personal, and to me it's like reading someone's diary. xd

I look for how well it is sung or played. Add something new or changing it's sound completely isn't always good as sometimes it messes up the song.

Take the song Mad World by Tears For Fears-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gFl2OXySs8

It has a dark and creepy feel and just sounds different while all other versions just sound the same and just seem depressing and sad-

Gary Jules-

Adam Lambert-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxGd0g-wpXA

In this case, none of the songs could compare to the original.

As for good covers, I like Kim Wilde's version of Keep Me Hanging on.-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNyRU0fKHAY

Had a modern feel for that time and some parts had a lot of emotion in it.

The original version by the Supremes-

Oh a good song I like was Early Morning Wake Up Call. Sounds so much better than the original.

Cover by The Hives-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOrsPb7IWmg

The sound reminds me of the old school punk such as The Clash. Which reminds me, I love their cover of I Fought The Law.

Original by Flash and the Pan-

The Clash-I Fought The Law

Original by Sonny Curtis of The Cricks-

Cover by Bobby Fuller Four-

Green day also did a cover-

The Clash one this one. Though I like Green Days version as well. I am pretty sure there are other versions. I remember I was pissed off at one as I though they ruined the meaning behind the song. xd
Can't remember who sang that version, it was years ago.

Oh, I just thought of another example of a bad cover. I was looking for Cheap Trick Song- I Want You To Want Me a while back and it was hard to find the original and a good version-.

Letters to Cleo-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aquSBPS4oAU&feature=related

Just can't beat the original.

As for good covers, I love the Dashboard Confessions cover for Jamie, they did much better than Weezer, and I love Weezer. Not their best song.

See, I like the depressing feeling to Mad World along with the dark and creepy. xd
Mainly because how the lyrics work with that song.

If you've seen Donnie Darko, then you get that with the Gary Jules version, and it works so damn well.

Though in that case, if you haven't seen the movie and heard the song in context with it, I suppose the dark and creepy would be lost.

I do agree that most versions can't touch the Tears for Fears though.

Actually, that does remind me, a few years back someone did a cover of Drive by the Cars.

For me it just didn't work at all o_o
They didn't try any sort of reinterpretation and just tried a copy.
A bad copy at that.

Deftones Version

Now on the other hand, there was a cover of Land of Confusion by Disturbed. THAT worked.

Disturbed Version
Genesis Version

And speaking of Phil Collins...
The In The Air Tonight cover done for the Miami Vice soundtrack should be mentioned. Great job.
But then Micheal Mann doesn't choose bad music for his movies.
