Quick question....

Why do people in America proudly state themselves as otaku? When in Japan it is used as a derogatory statement and those who are labeled as such are looked down upon by society. So why would someone proudly state themselves as something that is considered BAD? I mean I like anime and all and I go to conventions but I wouldn't go so far as to say I am an otaku, since by definition otaku are those who do nothing but watch anime, read manga, and essentially obsess over the 2D.

Otaku (おたく / オタク?) is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly anime, manga or video games.

Now to say obsessive is one thing, but to say does nothing but watch anime and others could be a bit much. I think that most people say their Otaku just want to show their support to their favorite Manga Authors, or Anime directors. As for Japan's refernce to Otaku being derogatory, you have to keep in mind that Japan is a strick society, very discepliend. Their version of obsessive and or version of the word could be entirly differnt.

It is true that Japanese society is strict, but that doesn't change the fact that being viewed as an otaku is a negative thing. So it confuses me why people would gladly declared themselves as something that is considered negative. And Otaku is written in Katakana and translates to nerd.

So an otaku is an anime-nerd then?

Why do blacks call themselves niggers? Why do I call myself a cripple? Just because a term is used in a derogatory way does not mean that you are not allowed to call yourself that. It's just a word, and whatever meaning it has for you may not be the same meaning that it has for the other person (degree wise, not definitional).

Not exactly. An otaku could be someone who is obsessed with the paranormal (aliens, bigfoot, etc.) It's a term that is like nerd in America, and is used to describe anyone with abnormal interests.

As i stated, idk why they would refer to themselves as something that is considered bad. To me it makes no sense. And as stated earlier the literal translation for otaku is nerd. Not anime-nerd but nerd in general.

Well, back to topic - yes there are otaku guys. A friend of mine, Todd, is obsessed with pokèmon. He is kind of a shut-in, and the only time you ever see him out in public is when he's ignoring everyone around him while playing his DS between classes. Normal conversations are all but impossible to hold with him.

I am terribly addicted to anime/manga.
Like, bookshelves full of manga/dvds addicted.

Friends have been to my room before, noone said a thing.
And to clarify, only two of my friends are otaku.

My school doesn't find it strange when I read manga in the library either.
So if it's being a nerd in other places, then it probably just depends on the type of people around I guess.

North American and Japanese definition of Otaku is very different. In North America if you are an anime fanatic, I think you are considered an Otaku. In Japan, on the other hand, Otaku is an extreme anime fanatic which is unhealthy in a way.

I love watching anime and reading manga, in a way, I can say I'm an Otaku in North American context....

You are way off
There are plenty of people in Japan who call themselves an Otaku.
It's no different than calling yourself an anime nerd or an anime geek.
And come to that, The sterio types are the same at that of geeks in the US.
Doesn't have many or any friends, lives with mother, doesn't have a girlfriend.
Spends many hours playing video games

there was a discriminating documentary a while back made by people who were trying to cast Otakus in a bad light and now Americans think of otakus.

Some people proudly say I'm a geek and some people get mad. Same with the word otaku.
