I would say Modern Format. Minus things like Time Vault and things from the old days. ^^;

Master Transmuter and Sundering Titan is pro right guys?
Pili-Pala and Grand Architect produce infinite mana when you turn it blue. Auriok Salvagers and Lotus Bloom do too. Thopter Assembly/Sword of the Meek/Time Sieve is powerful but I'm pretty sure its banned in modern.

Im not a big modern player because they act like legacy players so I don't keep up with their banned list. Oh Clock of Omens, Master Transmuter, and Myr Battlesphere nets infinate creatures. I do that in EDH for the luls. With a Door of Destinies, it gets pretty rough.

The best (and almost the worst) artifact decks I've seen has been affinity (typically U/B or U/B/R, but other combinations of Blue can work). Fun to play, usually not so fun to play against.
But, I have to say that artifact decks are either really good or really bad. When they are good, they play off of being colorless and roll into all sort of combos. When they are bad, they take too long for any good combo to kick in (like most of my artifact decks).
So if you're looking to make a powerful artifact deck, look for the cheap artifacts that have fair - powerful abilities. Then toss in a control color that works for you. Then most successful artifact decks involve sacrificing your artifacts to bring in the win (Which is why affinity typically had black in it, blue was for heavy draw and some countering to open up the combos).
